Essbase Disconnect in Excel

If you retreive on a sheet and then close the sheet without exiting Excel, Essbase retains the connection infromation. That is, when I look at Essbase...Disconnect the file/sheet is still there.Are there known problems associated with this that I should keep an eye out for?Example: If I retrieve multiple tabs in a file from one database with each sheet after the first using the login information of the first sheet (no explicit login on each sheet) and then close the file and do the retrieves again from a different database, the second and later sheets will use the original database instead of the second.Harold

I'd be very careful about relying on which database a particular sheet is connected to. If you have to deal with more than one database at a time, it's probably best to connect on each sheet before it's retrieved to make sure. Disconnecting completely from a database can be difficult as you need to disconnect every sheet which was retrieved in.JC

Essbase 7.x Excel Add In Compatibility?

Is Essbase 7.x Excel Add in compatible with Essbase 11? We would like the users to keep the Essbase 7.x Excel add in and only migrate Essbase server to 11.x.
Please advise.

Essbase 11 does not have a separate installable for Excel Add In. I think we have to use the 3GB installable to install just the Excel Add In. This will be a problem if I have to uninstall the old Add In and install the new Add in for 200 users.

Essbase load from Excel error

I haven't done an Excel load of data since training, but now that I need one I can't remember some of the issues. I get a "\\ Invalid number in data column" error from my load. Anyone know what might be the problem here?

Hello, Check your load rule by following the steps belowIn the data prep editor, the dimension fields must be placed before the data fields 1. Go to the DATA PREP EDITOR window within Hyperion Essbase Application Manager 2. Select any dimensions fields that are placed after the data fields 3. From the FIELD menu, choose MOVE and re-arrange the fields, so that the data fields come after all the dimension fields. 4. Save the data load rules file by selecting the DISK icon 5. Essbase with ActiveX Excel Session?

Does anybody know if there are limitations with the Add-in and an Active X excel session?

Do you mean that you created an instance of Excel using the VB CreateObject function (or a similar C++/.NET equivilent)? If so, I don't believe addin's get loaded when you create the object instance.
What you will to do is check the installed property of an addin object (Application.Addins.Item("essexcln").Installed) and install it if necessary. Note: the string "essexcln" may change from version to version of Essbase and perhaps even in the installation. In fact, I have never seen another installation (other than my laptop I am writing this on) that used that string). It is essentially the string you see in the Tools, Addins dialog and more typically is something like "Hyperion Essbase OLAP Server" or something like that.

Essbase Error in Excel's Add-In

When i drill-down in a Cube's Dimension in a vast query (using the Essbase's add-in for Excel), i get the Essbase Error: Maximum number of rows [8192] exceeded [8208]. Although i increased the No of rows in parameter SSPROCROWLIMIT in essbase.cfg, the problem remains.Any help will be appreciated.Thanks.

I'm guessing that you're using an old version of Excel, since it thinks you have only 8192 rows as the max number of rows available. Since Excel 97, there has been 65,536 rows to a sheet.The problem here is you've done a query that is returning more rows than your version of Excel can handle. Change the cfg file will not fix this. Either choose a query that would return fewer rows or upgrade your Excel. One other possiblity could be that you're running the Lotus add-in instead of the Excel add-in.

Essbase version 11 excel add in

I have recently downloaded essbase version 11. Does the desktop add in come with the download?
Also, is this version of the add-in compatible with the new excel version 2007?

Login Issue while connecting to Essbase server through excel add-in.

Hi Guys,
We are using Essbase 7.1.6 and have users (All are external users) who will connect to Essbase as part of month end close. Recently i am facing the below problem .
One of our user is trying to connect to Essbase and he is getting *"Login fails due to Inavlid login credentials"*. I am 100% sure he did not change his password also entered correct password.
But i manage to resolve this by disabling & enabling the user through EAS. Then user was able to connect to essbase with same userid & password.
My question is why this is happening quiet frequently? What could be the problem? This is happening with one or two users only not all users.
Please share your views if some one face this problem before?

Just keep in mind that Users lie. Maybe not intentionally, but they lie. All of them. 9 times out of 10. Just because they say something is so, doesn't mean that it is.
I can't begin to count the number of times that they have said "I am using my correct password" and it turns out that they forgot and are using an old one, or the one for some other system or are just fat fingering it. Or they shared it with someone else who is now entering it incorrectly. Don't believe a word that they say.

Excel addins and essbase connection

Hi Team,
In EPM 11.1.2.1 can you please let me know how Excel addins users connect to essbase server? Does it uses the default port 1423 to connect to essbase server when we connect to the essbase application from Excel to pull data.

In a default installation, the Add-In initially contacts the Essbase agent on 1423, and is then connected to the individual Essbase application using ports in the range 32768 to 33768.
See also AGENTPORT, SERVERPORTBEGIN and SERVERPORTEND in the Technical Reference. If non-default values have been configured you will see these parameters in the Essbase.cfg file for your installation.

Please do the below to get all dimension members as in hierarchy in excel.
Select "All levels" in Hierarchy excel in Options.
Select "Navigate without data"
Select appropriate indentation
Select "Allow double click operations" in mouse operations
Put the dimension that you need all members, in row.
double click the dfimension name and you will see you full dimension hierarchy [obviously without data].

Is Excel-Addin 9.3 Compatible with Essbase 7.0.1

I am getting the following error when i am trying to connect System 7 Essbase database through Excel 9.3 Ad din.

The Excel-ad din 7.0.1 works fine both with system 9 and system7 Essbase database.I am able to connect and retrieve data from the database without any issues.

EssBase with Excel, automatic Start-Up

I'm using EssBase with Microsoft Excel. Then of install EssBase and restart the computer, each time start the Excel start the Essbase aplication too. This process aviod some Excel's functions. How I can avoid the automatic start of the EssBase in Excel ? thks !!! Estela

Here's a trick I use borrowed from Hyperion Enterprise v4 where you put the xll file on the desktop. I use Excel '97 but it should be the same for other versions. Help with Essbase 9 and the Java API

Hi, I am trying to connect to Essbase from a Java desktop application and I am unable to do so. I need to know if I am in principle doing the right things and if I have the correct environment set up.
We have a server with Essbase version 9.3.1. We normally use essbase via the Excel Addin, and I have already written Excel applications that utilise both the addin and the Essbase VB API. Now I need to connect to Essbase but from outside Excel and using the Java API. I have no idea what APS is nor does my Essbase Administrator.
My application has the following code (adapted from a post in this forum) -

I am running my application on my computer, not on the Essbase server, and the username I am using is the same one I use (as a user of Essbase) via the Essbase Addin in Excel, not an admin login.
When I run the app I get:
"Cannot connect to Provider Server.Make sure the signon parameters are correct and the Provider Server is running."
Please can you confirm:
1) Do I need an admin login for my client application to connect to the Essbase server or can I use a normal read-access login, like the one I use in Excel?
2) Is the provider always the same regardless of the computer, i.e. "http://localhost:13080/aps/JAPI"; How do I know what this has to be? Where do I get this information from?
3) How can I make sure that the Server is running the necessary "Provider Server", is this just a service that will show on services.msc of the server? What should I ask the Essbase Administrator for him to tell me what I need?

Tim, when I look in my computer's Essbase installation path I can only find the following jar files (from the ones you have listed).

Unable to download the data perfectly into excel sheet

Hi Frnds,
when i am trying to download the data from the output of a report into excel, some of the records(line items/rows) are getting stored in one of column of the excel sheet. Fog eg: my report outputs 500 line items. In excel after 100 rows the next 5-10 records/rows are storing in one column. so at the end of excel sheet i may not find total 500 records/line items.
Plz suggest me how to handle this.
