EST - Support Daylight Savings Time or not?

We have found an issue with Daylight Savings Time, the "EST" timezone and Solaris. In Java, the "EST" timezone is flagged as supporting Daylight Savings Time. In Solaris, "EST" does NOT support Daylight Savings Time. The Solaris setting is based on the zoneinfo files that come from ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/ (presumably an "official" US Government source). In the "northamerica" file, "EST" is equated to "America/Indianapolis" which is the part of Indiana that does NOT support Daylight Savings Time.
So, it would appear that Java supporting DST for "EST" would be a bug but I haven't been able to find any other references to this issue. Anyone have any insight on this?
Mark

I believe the following example will be of some help.
java.util.TimeZone zone;
java.util.Calendar gcal;
java.text.SimpleDateFormat form = new java.text.SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm z");
gcal=new java.util.GregorianCalendar(2004,(4-1),4,14,30);// with default timezone
long t0=gcal.getTimeInMillis();
zone = TimeZone.getTimeZone("America/New_York");// New_York
System.out.println(zone.getID());
form.setTimeZone(zone);
gcal.setTimeInMillis(t0);
System.out.println(form.format(gcal.getTime()));
zone = TimeZone.getTimeZone("America/Indianapolis");// Indianapolis
System.out.println(zone.getID());
form.setTimeZone(zone);
gcal.setTimeInMillis(t0);
System.out.println(form.format(gcal.getTime()));

  • Solaris 10 u8 system did not update daylight savings time

    I am running Solaris 10 u8 x86, and my system did not update for the daylight savings time change on Nov. 1, 2009. I am in the US/Mountain time zone. What should I do?
    Patch 141517-04 is installed, I assume it came with u8.
    Does this have something to with JAVA Time Zone updater? I saw this:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/timezones/tzdata_versions.html
    Shouldn't u8 take care of all this automatically? Do I have to somehow get TZUT 1.3.20? By contacting support? What?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    BTW, I'm running 64-bit Solaris as a VirtualBox (3.0.10) guest VM on a 32-bit WinXP host.

  • IPhone not picking up Daylight Savings Time

    In reviewing last year, I see that there was an issue with iPhones making the time switch to Daylight Savings Time (it appeared to be limited to New Mexico).
    Well, it seems to be happening again. My wife and I are in New Jersey and neither of our iPhones made the auto switch. I assume it is an AT&T issue (again) but I'm curious if anybody else is seeing this?
    I guess the work around for now is to turn off auto and set it yourself. Irritating.

    You may get your wish one day which at the earliest would be sometime in 2010 and if so, then you will be talking to a bunch of idiots at whichever provider for the iPhone as none of the front line folks who answer the phone for technical support issues and questions with cellular providers are overpaid by any means, and some are not going to become a rocket scientist.
    The few times I've called AT&T customer or technical support, I have no complaints whatsoever, which has been about the same with every provider I've used.
    There are Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile subscribers who say the very same thing at times - "I just got off the phone with a bunch of idiots at - fill in the blank".

  • Saskatchewan does not change to daylight savings time

    Saskatchewan does not change to daylight savings time but my calendar on my iPhone 5s changed and my iMac stayed the same and the iMac time is the correct one

    Automatically changing the date and time when set to automatically is carrier dependent since that is acquired by the cell tower the iPhone is connected with.

  • IPOD and Mac did not properly adjust for Daylight Savings Time

    Hi, I have noticed that my iPod and my Mac Mini do not appear to have the latest update for Daylight Savings Time.  There were a few adjustments this year that do not seem to be reflected on the Mac devices  ???  I was using my iPod for time and was thrown off when time change before DST went into affect.

    So, in your system preferences on the mini, under Date and Time, you have the box checked that says "Set date and time automatically"? Then, on the time zone tab, you have selected your correct time zone? I typically leave the box there unchecked that says to try and set automatically using current location.

  • Daylight Savings Time not changing

    I have a Verizon Wireless iPhone 4 and the time didn't change for daylight savings time today. It is set to do it automaticly and I also tried to sync it to see if it would change but it didn't. Any advice?

    I, too, suffered the same problem with my iphone 4, os 4.3. My phone did not spring forward an hour, unless I turned it off to do so automatically in the settings. However, my son has a 3gs and his phone DID spring forward. Same house, same AT&T, same os, same everything except for the type of phone. Very strange. I restarted my phone two times, but the only thing that would make it spring forward was to turn off "Set Automatically," then it moved, but if I turned it back on it would go back an hour. Erg.

  • WRT54G did not update to daylight savings time

    The WRT54G is hardware v1.1, firmware v4.30.5
    On the basic set up page, I have checked the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings time chages", however, it did not update the clock for daylight savings time this weekend.  This has caused numerous outages due to the Access Restrictions that are defined.
    What do I need to do to have the router update its clock for daylight savings time

    You shouldn't have to do anything, but since it doesn't work... hard reset the router by pressing the reset button in back and reconfigure the router from scratch.  See if that works and gets the correct time from your ISP.

  • Has anyone had problems in v5.0a of Iplanet calendar installed on a Sun box with creating events and daylight savings time?

    Events created around 4/6/2002 at 8pm get created with the wrong time (9pm) and there are several other creation and display problems tied to Daylight Savings in April and October. Version 5.1 of the software seems to fix that but we are looking for a fix until we can upgrade. We have been using Windows systems to access the calendar.
    Thanks.

    We have not seen exactly this, but many users appointments are lining up in the wrong time slots. Also, when scheduling, the time display is off by an hour. We have found what looks like a temporary fix.
    We noticed that the problem only affects users who have the start of the week set to Sunday (when daylight savings time started). Setting the week to start on Monday fixed our display problems (you can do it in the users, options section).
    I am placing a support call w/SUN.

  • CUE timezone and daylight savings time

    Hi,
    Having issue where CUEs don't seem to be adjusting for daylight savings time. Timezone is set correct to EST but is a hour off because its daylight savings time now. The router and CUE are configured to use same NTP server and router has summertime setting and adjusts for DST fine and has correct time but CUE is a hour behind, like it is not doing DST.
    Were on version 2.2(2) of CUE software.
    This is also in indiana where the laws changed recently so maybe that has something to do with this.
    Any ideas?

    Very likely due to the change in Indiana. A workaround would be to change the timezone to an EST zone that observes DST such as America/Louisville (Eastern Time - Kentucky - Louisville Area).
    Hope this helps.

  • All Event times change with Daylight Savings time

    With the time change associated with daylight savings time (March 8 2008) all my event times were changed by one hour. EG: events that were 8:45 am are now 7:45 am. I have tried using Time machine to restore to pre March 8 status,but an adjustment takes place and the events remain 1 hour ahead. I have looked through the discussions pages and don't even see the issue identified. I have looked through the menu and preference items and find nothing to help.
    I am surprised not to find this a front page topic today, March 9 2008.
    Can anyone offer some help ?
    Bill Mullen

    Michael,
    I never have changed time zones. Are you suggesting I should have time zone support enabled ?
    I just tried turning on Time Zone Support, then restoring my calendar using Time machine. No change here.
    As I mentioned earlier, this same problem occurred in the fall (although I don't remember which way the event times moved), this time they moved forward. At the Fall change I was using a Mac G4, which I used as a target to build this machine. The only thing I can think of that makes me unique (although I'm not in that small of a group) is that I have altered one of the files in iSync to allow iSync to sync calendar events with iCal. The syncing has always worked OK.
    Right now I'm leary of attempting to do anything with iSync. I'm also finding it difficult to believe I'm not one of 10,000 people experiencing the same problem, but I don't see any other posts.
    I found a time zone in south america which returns my times to the correct figure, with time zone support enabled, but that looks like a deeper hole to dig out of.
    Still stuck,
    Bill

  • AIX 6/7 U.S. Daylight Savings Time bug

    I saw announcements this past Friday and yesterday about daylight savings time bug on IBM AIX and thought this news might be important to pass around, as the time changes in the U.S.  this coming weekend, and the fix requires a system reboot.
    Possible Action Required: System time may not change properly at DST start/end dates on AIX 7.1 and AIX 6.1

    > Apparently, this is far more complicated than either of us might think. I've heard that from several people.
    I don't want to simply sound argumentative (I'm NOT attacking you in any way here), but without some sort of specific evidence of why this would be a complicated issue to fix, I have difficulty believing this. It's easy to say "it's more complicated than you would think," but where is the evidence of this? Where is the statement from Adobe saying that they know about this issue? Where are the examples from the people you refer to that explain why Lr can't do with dozens of other apps -- many of them FREE -- can do without this problem? Are we really supposed to believe that displaying the date/time correctly is so complicated that it's going to take Adobe over a YEAR to fix it?
    We're talking about displaying some text from a standard tag. When it comes to this sort of application, it doesn't get much simpler than this. Lr doesn't have to "calculate" anything -- it just has to display the data in this field. How is this any different than displaying the data from any other field. Why is Lr applying an "adjustment" to a field that doesn't need it? Exactly what is the theory behind this being difficult?
    Thanks for your feedback,

  • ICal and iCloud Calendar Appointments Problems Following Daylight Savings Time Change

    This morning following the daylight savings time change, I noticed that some but not all of my appointments had shifted forward an hour. Strangely enough, some are correct on the iCloud calendar but are still not correct in iCal. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Here's another anomaly: the info panel is showing the correct time while the calendar view is not! I have turned off time zone support in both iCal and the iCloud calendar. It's so frustrating when you rely on these tools--especially for appointments--and you find that you can't trust them to be accurate!

    samdale67,
    Have you had any luck fixing this problem yet?
    I just noticed today that my iCloud calendar is consistently one hour behind my iPhone4s calendar. It's as if my iCloud calendar never got the Daylight Savings Time Spring Forward message. The iPhone, on the other hand, updated to DST right on schedule. It's annoying because I'm starting to use my iCloud calendar and would like the time change to be applied.

  • Daylight Savings Time Confusion

    Hello,
    I am trying to understand how Daylight Savings Time is handled in Oracle Database.
    I have read through the "Oracle Database Globalization Support Guide", in particular this part onwards to understand how it works.
    However, I have some doubts about the way things work.
    I am particularly interested in how the ambiguous date-times are handled.
    I have been trying to find the reason as to why same query returns different values when executed through SQL Developer and from SQL*Plus
    Following are the details:
    In SQL*Plus session
    SQL> select * from v$version ;
    BANNER
    Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
    CORE    11.2.0.2.0      Production
    TNS for Linux: Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
    NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production

    SQL> select to_timestamp('31-MAR-2013 01:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS') from dual ;
    TO_TIMESTAMP('31-MAR-201301:00:00','DD-MON-YYYYHH24:MI:SS')

    SQL> alter session set time_zone = 'Europe/London' ;
    Session altered.

    select to_timestamp('31-MAR-2013 01:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS') at time zone 'Europe/London' from dual
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01878: specified field not found in datetime or intervalAs you can see, when the clocks changed on the morning of 31st March, the time between 01:00:00 and 01:59:59 does not exist (as the clocks are advanced by one hour at 01:00:00 AM to 02:00:00 AM). However, the TO_TIMESTAMP function returns the "invalid" date.
    But when I execute the same query (i.e. select to_timestamp('31-MAR-2013 01:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS') from dual) against the same database using SQL Developer, I get "31-MAR-2013 02.00.00.000000000" as the result.
    SESSIONTIMEZONE     DBTIMEZONE
    Europe/London     +00:00Can somebody help me understand this behaviour ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Edited by: user503699 on Apr 19, 2013 3:28 PM

    sorry, i don't explain it very well.
    I mean that the same time_zone name can be the same, but the value depend of the time zone table:
    For example:
    TZNAME                                              TZABBREV
    Europe/London                                                    LMT
    Europe/London                                                    GMT
    Europe/London                                                    BST
    Europe/London                                                    BDSTLMT
    Local Mean Time. This is the 'natural' mean solar time for the time zone, excluding the equation of time. At the moments where the equation of time is zero, this is the amount of time to be added to UTC. Right then the sun passes the local meridian and is at its highest point in the sky.
    This means that the sun is at its highest point at local time:
    12 + zonetime + DST - LMT - EquationOfTime
    Example: Kaxgar, China; location: 39:29°N, 075:59°E; LMT: 5:03:56; zone: 8; DST: 0; EoT on 2005-07-29: -0:06:28; this gives local time 15:02:32.
    Over a year the equation of time can make a difference of between about + and - 18 minutes with the mean LMT time. The LMT time is calculated from the geographic longitude of a local place. Divide the number of degrees in longitude by 15.GMT:
    Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a time system originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London,BST:
    British Summer Time
    Time zone offset: UTC + 1 hour
    BST is 1 hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
    Note that BST is a daylight saving time/summer time zone. It is generally only used during the summer in the places listed below, during the winter GMT or IST are used instead*BDST i cant find.

  • SbRIO cannot handle Daylight Savings Time?

    I have a sbRIO 9632. I have set the timezone and Current Date and Time.
    When I display the current time in a timestamp indicator, it is correct.
    When I use the Format Date/Time String function, the time is lagging by one hour.
    I checked and the DST bit is reported as 0 when it's 1 on my PC. It's the middle of July, so it has nothing to do with the change in DST rules.
    If I look in MAX, the System Settings tab has a check in the checkbox for daylight savings time (although it is greyed out).
    Does this mean that DST is not supported by the sbRIO (VxWorks)? Or is it a bug?
    Does anyone know of a workaround that is not a pain?
    Thanks.

    "Is it the correct time when shown in a timestamp indicator, but incorrect when put through the Format Date/Time String function?"
    Yes.
    "In other words, is the format VI changing the time?"
    Yes.
    "Also, have you tried using the RT Set Date and Time VI to set the time to what you want?"
    Yes. It does set the time - the timestamp indicator shows the time that I set. However, the formatted string shows the time less one hour still.

  • COREid lockups at daylight savings time

    Has anyone else run into COREid Access and Identity server lockups at the time when the daylight savings time adjustment occurs? It seems like it happens in the spring, but not in the fall. With the fall adjustment coming up soon, I guess we can validate that theory. According to Oracle support, we are the only customer who has reported the issue, but I have heard from friends that we are not the only customer experiencing it. Please let me know if you have run into this or not so that we can share notes and maybe get to the bottom of this issue.
    Thanks!
    Aaron

    Ram,
    That's a good thought. We do have some WebSphere connectors in both Eastern and Pacific (the main installation is in Central), but I know that we had this issue long before they were deployed. I don't think that putting the servers into the same time zone is an option due to the other dependancies.
    Just to add a little more background to the mystery, this issue does not seem to be version specific as it has been with us through a couple of upgrades. I dont remember if we encountered it on 6.5, but we have definitly had it on all versions of 7.x that we have had installed.
    If the time was out of synch, wouldn't that just cause the WebGates and connectors to stop functioning? That would be the logical result to me...
    I will certainly keep this in mind when I review the logs from the next daylight savings time cut-over.
