ESX Maintenance Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Do you use SOPs for ESX maintenance?  I'm currently compiling some for VIOPS taken from my own experience - I think I've spotted a pattern, you see...
Also, I love the work of the IT Process Institute, Gene Kim (CTO Tripwire) and Kevin Behr (Assemblage Pointe) and others on bringing science to IT... ever heard of the Toyota Production System?  Ever heard of an IT version?  But I digress (if your interest is piqued - private message me!).
Back to the SOP - do you have one for ESX maintenance?  My work so far has found five different triggers:
Swap - e.g. replace failed drive
Patch - e.g. security patch
Upgrade - e.g. minor release like 3.5 U2
Configure - e.g. lock down SSH so you can only access via bastion/jump box
Observation - e.g. to run a vmsupport script
So now I'm thinking that ESX Maintenance isn't an SOP, but a collection of SOPs - and the real SOPs are those five above.
But what does an SOP look like?  The most basic example is a list of steps, but that's not enough for me.  I want something that brings science to IT and allows for continuous improvement.  I want the procedure to be followed rigorously, consistently - and where there is deviation it is because either (a) the process can be improved (improve the process), or (b) the person needs to be improved (improve the person - training).
So for my gold standard of SOP I've thought of the following attributes - and each SOP should fit on one piece of A4 paper
Trigger / Driver - what starts this whole thing, possibly a connection to a preceding SOP?
Input - what information is required to do this job?
RACI - for this procedure, who is Responsible (who does it), Accountable (who supervises?), Consulted (who helps), Informed (who is notified)
Resources - what tools and suchlike are needed for the actions (e.g. the list of changes to make to /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Actions - the unambiguous action to do, down to the most intricate detail - do not summarize, do not leave open to interpretation.
Timing - for each action, like the marks on the Toyota production line that shows in 32s you should be at step 3.
Output - A measurable outcome
So I'm desperately seeking SOPs and people who are interested in this stuff - I believe it's the key to increasing throughput and reliability of change, as do many others... do you?

I'm planning on separating a SOP from an STP - Standard Technical Procedure.
So the SOP will have a list of actions / STPs with how long they should take... example:
1.  On the SOP, one action is "logon to host" and it should take 2 minutes
2.  The STP is "Use SSH + RSA keyfob to connect to bastion.vmware.com, then SSH from bastion to host with username"
So on the A4 piece of paper, it does not go into n'th degree of the technical procedure, which may, as you say, require screen shots and stuff.
And the A4 suggestion is figurative, because all of this should be online anyway, but keeping it short is my point.
An SOP is equivalent to a project manager's Work Package (Prince2 term?).
Like you say, I'll write up a sample and try and get that looking good with your help (and others?) - then tackle the rest.
I am particularly keen on the time it takes to do an SOP... not just the steps required.  How does one limit unplanned yak shaving (to quote John Troyer!).
Your list looks great, and I've seen a similar one in PSO with HTML interactive screens...

  • Attaching Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in Process Order

    Hi All,
How "Standard Operating Procedure" sheet attached into each and every process order, and also we have to restrict the release of process order which doesn't have this SOP attachment? Each and every in-house material has SOP with huge characteristic & Parameter data. How come achieve this, what is the best practice/procedure? Is this maintain through PI sheet or any other procedure along with PI sheet? Please suggest.
    Thanks

    Hi Anupam sharma,
Thanks for your reply. Can we use the document creation (CV01N) functionality without implementing DMS? Our requirement is each and every in-house produced material having SOP sheet which is contain lot of parameters as well as having instruction (long text). We are currently maintain as an excel sheet. We have to attach each file against each material and it should be attached with PI sheet. Let us know the possibility, 2 cases we have planned to try,
    1. No input parameter value, all are having static value and instruction (attached with each and every process order as an PI sheet)
    2. Need to input value for some of the parameters along with some instruction steps (Long text)
How the below functionality will help us to meet the requirement?

  • Standard Operating Procedures on SharePoint - Ideas?

    Hi folks,
I manage operations on the business/service side of a software company. We use SharePoint lists to track a lot of "widgets" that get processed by various team members across the ops organization. These SharePoint lists function like work queues for many
    widget-processing teams.
Can anyone shed some light on how they use SharePoint to manage and store Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents for processing widgets? I'm looking for ideas that go beyond the plain, simple Document Library where you simply upload a document.
Is anyone using a SharePoint Wiki, HTML, or some other format to document business processes?
Our organization uses Salesforce as well, and Salesforce has a pretty powerful KnowledgeBase tool, but I'd prefer to keep our processors in SharePoint since that is where most of their work lives.
Any insight or ideas that you could provide would be great! Also, does anyone know of any SharePoint user forms that are more geared to business users rather than development?

    Hi Ethan,
There is a 3rd party plugin tht will allow you to track reads/assigns documents called docread.
Sounds like its what you might be looking for?

  • Maintenance order Operation mass change with Ehp5

    Hi Experts,
We are currently working in ECC 6.0 Ehp3 and we are exploring the additional features with Ehp5.
To explore the Ehp5 functionalities (Maintenance order Operation Account Assignment and Operation mass change) we did the foloowing:
    1. LOG_EAM_CI_2 to LOG_EAM_CI_5  and LOG_EAM_LINEAR_1 business function is activated
    2. LOG_EAM_OLC: Operation Account Assignment business function is activated
    3. Under Define Cost settings configuration, the relevant Plant and Order type checkbox is activated
    4. The user role is adjusted to enable the Maintenance order Operation mass change functionality
Suppose the LOG_EAM_OLC business function is activated on 01.02.2012
The Maintenance orders created before 01.02.2012 is allowed to do the Maintenance order Operation mass change.
But the Maintenance orders created after 01.02.2012 is not allowing to do the Operation mass change and throwing the error message.
Error message: Operation Account Assignment orders (order type XX) are not supported
    Program name: SAPLIBAPI_ALM_ORDER_PROCESSING
Message Class: ERP_CO_OLC_E (Messages for Operative Level Costing)
    Message number: 066
I have reffered the supporting documents, but it didn't helped.
    Please help me.
    Thanks,
    Raj

    Hi,
I expect the issue is with BAPI_ALM_ORDER_MAINTAIN. The mass change functionality usues this BAPI but the BAPI does not currently support OLC orders. When you try to change OLC orders via the BAPI (or the mass change functionality tries to do it) this is prevented and the error message is issued.
At the moment, you will not be able to use mass change for OLC orders.

    hi,
pl use TAXINN. Remaining as usual.
TAXINJ & TAXINN are Tax Procedures in India. TAXINJ is old version & TAX INN is new version. Both has its own advantage & disadvantage.
Upto 4.6C & partially 4.7 version of SAP, TAXINJ was used. TAXINJ is formula based calculation, in which we maintain the tax rate in Tax Code itself. The implication is that if say we are having product range such that say Excise rate differes for separate chapter ID, VAT, CST & permutation & combination of these, we require that many Tax Codes. For example:
    Tax Code: A1
    Taxes: 16% Excise Duty + 2% Education Cess + 12% VAT
    Tax Code: A2
    Taxes: 16% Excise Duty + 2% Education Cess + 8% VAT
    Tax Code: A3
    Taxes: 12% Excise Duty + 2% Education Cess + 12% VAT
    Tax Code: A3
    Taxes: 12% Excise Duty + 2% Education Cess + 8% VAT
From 4.7 version onwards of SAP, TAXINN is being recommended & used. TAXINN is more user friendly & condition record based. In TAXINN, Tax Codes are statistical & of not much relevance, but are required to be maintained in condition record for taxes condition type. This makes Tax Codes simpler. The implication is that if say we are having product range such that say Excise rate differes for separate chapter ID, VAT, CST, we need not have the tax codes to that combination. For example:
    Tax Code: A1
Can be used for any rate of excise duty, as tax code is only required to be maintained statistically in condition record.
    Tax Code: A2
Can be used for any rate of VAT, as tax code is only required to be maintained statistically in condition record.
IMG > Logistics - General > Tax On Goods Movement > India > Basic Settings > Determination of Excise Duty >
    Select Tax Calculation Procedure
    Use
In this IMG activity, you specify which tax procedure you want to use for determining excise duties and sales taxes on input materials in India.
    • If you use condition-based excise determination, use a copy of the tax procedure TAXINN.
    • If you use formula-based excise determination, use a copy of the tax procedure TAXINJ.
This tax procedure also supports condition-based excise determination, so that you can work with both concurrently.
We strongly recommend that new customers use condition-based excise determination. Note that once you have started using a tax procedure, you cannot switch to another one, otherwise you will not be able to display old documents.
    Maintain Excise Defaults
    Use
In this IMG activity, you define which tax procedure and pricing condition types are used in calculating excise taxes using formula-based excise determination.
    Activities
If you use condition-based excise determination, fill out the CVD cond. field and leave all the others blank.
If you use formula-based excise determination, fill out all of the fields as follows:
    • Enter the tax procedure and the pricing conditions that are relevant for excise tax processing.
    • Specify the purchasing and sales conditions types used for basic excise duty, additional excise duty, special excise duty, and cess.
    • Specify the conditions in the sales order that are used for excise rates.
    • Specify the countervailing duty condition type used for import purchase orders.

Impact on Pricing Procedure & Condition Record:
Another Important difference between TAXINJ & TAXINN is that in TAXINJ along with formula in Tax Code, you also have to maintain condition record & there are 2 condition types for Basic Excise duty & similarly other excise duties. in one condition you maintain the actual excise duty % & in other you main as 100%, which will be a copy of actual excise duty. But in TAXINN, instead of 2, you require to maintain only one condition type for each excise dity like JEXP for Basic Excise duty & similarly for other excise duties. You require to design pricing procedure accordingly.

  • Suppress standard Tax procedure for tax returned from external tax server

    Hi All,
We are facing an issue after implementing the external tax engine called CTE.
In some scenarios, when CTE is returning reverse charge lines, we are passing the same lines into the BAPI for posting.
Ex: We can clearly see that two reverse charge lines (input and output taxes) being returned by CTE.
Now, we pass the tax lines into the BAPI for posting. We get the following:
We can clearly see that apart from the tax lines which have been sent by CTE, we also get two additional lines having +-1000 as amount.
Now, we tried to post the document without passing the tax lines into BAPI and we get,
The additional lines are still there. Thus, I came to the conclusion that these tax lines are being added by SAP standard tax procedure as tax calculation.
Now, since we have already calculated tax using CTE (for some cases specially reverse charge scenario), we do not need SAP standard tax procedure to calculate tax again and add new tax lines to the posted document.
Thus, our main objective is to suppress the standard tax procedure ( like TAXAT, TAXGB, etc) or few of the cases.
We tried to analyze from our end but still could not reach a solution for the same.
Is there any way or any indicator which you can use to suppress the standard tax procedure in case we are using CTE to calculate tax?
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Saurabh.

    Hi
You can create and use a new tax code which is applicable only for Delivery charge cases.
Use a new pricing condition type for this Tax .and condition records with access sequence and tax code can be amintianed only for this condition type.
You will have to modify pricing procedure for the same.
Depending on condition records and document inputs the tax values for delivery will get triggered.
You can also put an order reason in Accounting determination access sequence through which on This special sales ,
    account determiantion can be changed.
    hope this helps

  • Maintenance Order Operation Split

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me how would I get automatic split on maintenance order operations?
Is there any separate transaction for operation confirmation at the level of splited operations?
    Regards,

    Hi,
Yes, generating of automatic split at the operation level is definitely possible at the time of Order Create. This is available through the partner determination functionality.Have a look at [Sap Help|http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/EN/42/11112e460d73aee10000000a114b54/frameset.htm] for additional information.

    Hi Experts,
We have been migrating from ECC4.5 to ECC6.0, Now when i check the Standard Pricing Procedures in SPRO settings in Define Calculation Schema, I am not finding Lot of the default Standard Pricing Procedures which Usually appear in ECC6 of Fresh Installation. Could any one help me is there any Patches or Notes  to be applied on that.

i think you have to import from the client 000 or 001.
ask your basic consultant to create a user in this client and go to this client ,m/08 ,select  the procedures  and control data ,create Transport request  via menu bar table view -- Transport  and save . after that select all the condition types in that procedure  and at the top you can see * include in the transport * ,include all selected entries and save .repeat for all the procedures.
goto your actual development client import it via SCC1 transaction
Same way you have to import all the condition types also in M/06

  • Maintenance Order operations details and cost

    Dear Expert,
I am having external service scenario where vendor raise the invoice with different labour charges and spare parts charges. To map this,I am thinking to create 2 services with different GL accounts. So please let me know whether this will work and I able to bifurgate the vendor cost.
Another thing,In maintenance  order I will enter 2 operations,1st is for labour service and 2nd is for spare parts cost and assign the related service to this operations. Now is there any std report available where I will get operation wise cost based on the service cost for spare parts cost and labour cost,if not then please let me know the logic to developed the Z reports for the same.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards.
    Swapnil

    Hi Swapnil,
Its possible if you plan to develop a custom report.
    In standard not possible.
For all these service entry cost, you can get through below tables
ESKN                           Account Assignment in Service Package
    ESLH                           Service Package Header Data
    ESLL                           Lines of Service Package
    ESLP                           Service Item
    ESLT                           Service Item Short Texts
ESSR                           Service Entry Sheet Header Data
    ESST                           Service Item Short Texts
Similarly, you can obtain cost at different places like Internal Labour / External Labour / Internal material / External materials. Each costing information can be taken from different tables.
You need a good Abaper to get the logic and work on it

  • When Creating a Work Order Import Standard Operations

A client is requesting the following functionality when creating a Work Order: Create the first nine operations with different work centers and number operations 0001 u2013 0009.  For operation ten continue numbering with 0010 and increase by 10, ie, 0020, 0030, etcu2026 .   And operation 0010 would default header data.
Can this be accomplished through standards configuration or would this entail a user exit?
    Thanks in advance!!
    JAM

It can be possible, depending on how you create the Work Order.   If these operations are used often and are in a task list, you can create a work order and import the task list operations by using the menu "extras -> task List selections" inside the work order.    If it is part of a preventative maintenance plan, you can configure that your task list is automatically copied to the notification/work order when generated by your maintenance plan.  Of course in the task list you could save all the increments and work centers as you want.   But this would never be a dynamic check to your header data, it would only be as accurate as your task list.
