Etc/system file corrupted how to recover it?
etc/system file corrupted how to recover it?
with boot -a you can only specify new /etc/system during boot , e.g. /dev/null
but if you want to recover it , you can do it from live kernel ( if you didn't reboot after /etc/system was corrupted )
with
echo ::system|mdb -k
or from previous crash dump simmilar way
cd /var/crash/`uname -n`
cho ::system|mdb unix.[x] vmcore.[y]

PDF files corrupted, how to recover them?
I am using ubuntu 11.04. Few days ago, I installed wine to run .exe programs on the system. Somehow .exe virus flooded into the system & the entire system has got corrupted. Now I am unable to view pdf files as all of them are corrupted. How can recover them now?
Some viruses destroy all PDF (and other types of file) on the system. If this is the case, they are gone, and you need to restore from backup.

/etc/system got corrupted
Dear All,
if on a running server /etc/system file got corrupted, then what will happen...means the server will continue running or it will come down to OK prompt.....Check if your OS volumes are mirrored ( # df -k ) if root ( / ) is /dev/md/dsk/d0 then you will need to add the metaroot entry back.
Mine looks like this, you can re-create it by re-running mataroot

How do I set a limit for a per process data size in the /etc/system file?
Thank you.
coscopCoscop,
You can't. The only limit you could set via /etc/system is
file descriptor limits (rlim_fd_cur & rlim_fd_max). ie.:
set rlim_fd_max = 4096
The rest, including the process heap segment, needs
to be set via shell (like in the .profile). Later version of
Solaris has the plimit command which allows to set the limit
on the running PID. Solaris Resource Manager was developed
around the Solaris 8 release time frame, I don't believe
it has a way to limit the heap segment per prccess either.
Hope this helps.

Problem with /etc/system file
I changed /etc/system file and reboot Sun Solaris Intel (5.8)
and I got :
* IPC Semaphores module is not loaded
I did same thing on another box before and was fine. I now that I run some utility before rebooting, but I forget which one.
Can somebody help me.Thank you very much.
That solve my problem. The problem, if I undersend well, was not in my new /etc/system file, problem was (it is not problem) because I run sysdef right after booting machine and that modul probably is not loaded yet. With forceload sysdef shows what I expected. About
some utility, probably that was something else.

Hi all,
we are having 3 db in windows box oracle 9i version daily we scheduled a backup its for dev and uat database. but when i checked the same of back it shows that 2 are backed up one is not backed up due to that ora-01115 error.
then wi checked the in site they said that due to malfunction of harddisk problem.and bad sectors. so in the meantime what i did is back up controlfile and then shutdown the database and did a full consistent copy almost completing stage the system file is not copyed due to that data cyclic redundancy error. i tried twice no use same result.
is there anyway to recover that system file. or noway?
if it is not ok then i have to clone the test db and give it to dev.
is there anyway to bring that system with the help of controlfile...
pls suggest me..If you cannot make a full export without getting an error you can still try to export all the user data and generating all stored code: packages, procedures, functions, sequences, etc ....
Is the CRC error being reported by the OS or Oracle? Because it is the system tablespace I am not sure if it can be used but have you looked into using the dbms_repair package to find, mark, and skip the corrupt blocks?
I have fixed corruption in the rdbms base tables before by identifying the corrupted object and then dropping and recreating the object. If this method will work for you will depend on what is corrupt.
If you have support opening a SR and getting support guidence on how to save your data is probably worthwhile.
Otherwise you need to restore your last good backup. But I suggest you verify the status of the backup before using it. It may in fact be bad so you might want to try alternate approaches to savalaging the data and rebuilding the database

/etc/authorization file corrupted
Hi,
For some strange reason that I don't know, the /etc/authorization file was corrupted in my iMac with Leopard OS, so I'm not able to login anymore but I can start a single user session.
Is there a way to restore the default /etc/authorization file without reinstalling the system OS? Is there an automatic backup of the file somewhere?
I do a:
# find / -iname authorization
but I don't find anything usefull.
Thanks a lot!Do you have the original install disks? You may be able to extract a "starting" authorization file from that.
There is a /etc/authorization.user_modified on my MacBook, but I have no idea how useful that would be if you do have it! -
System file corruption-alternatives to erase&install?
To make a long story short(er) I restored from (SuperDuper) backup after the HD failed and Apple gave me a new one. Then problems occurred with the system being slow (hesitating a lot) and having trouble connecting via wireless and finally not connecting at all, and then the machine ended up in "limbo" (according to the Mac Genius.) Now I've been told to erase and install, but I'm reluctant... There's a years worth of tweaks, updates, and installs on my MacBook! (After all, that's why I was so fervent about backing up...) And Boot Camp too.*)
Evidently "some" corrupt system files made their way into my backup before the old drive failed. (There was no warning; one day it was just gone.)
My question is, is there a way to figure out/diagnose which system files are corrupt and to replace only those? Or, alternatively, is there a way to "erase and install" only the system? Please forgive my "lack of Mac," I come from many years with Windows.
*)I'm assuming I can use Winclone to restore Windows (if I really have to erase the drive) once I repartition using Boot Camp. Um, all I have to do is remember how big I made that partition...I suggest that you start with an Archive and Install (checking the box to preserve settings). The last time I did this was in an upgrade from 10.2 to 10.3 on our little iMac G3, and after it finished, everything was just exactly the same as it had been under 10.2, except for one thing: those little pictures were gone by the users' names on the login screen (it was trivial to reconnect those pictures with the names). So I would try that, and see if your issues are fixed. If they are not, then there is another step you can take, which is to delete your preference files that are associated with the problem (i.e. wireless, airport). and if these things are not effective, then I would proceed with the full erase and install. I haven't done the Archive and Install with Tiger but I don't think it gives you a lot of options about what setting to save ... I think it's either all or none.
By the way, before doing any of these things, you should make at least one complete backup or clone of your entire disk.
Also, before doing Archive & Install or Erase & Install, create a new user and login as that user to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then there is not much point in doing a new system installation because the problem would have been pinpointed to your local user files/preferences, not the system-wide software.
I am not surprised that the Apple Genius suggested Erase/Install versus Archive/Install. The Erase/Install is guaranteed to fix any software issue, so the Genius won't need to deal with you in a follow up anymore. They have people lined up and want to just get you on your way, even though it might cause you a lot of work to recover all your settings and installed software (that's your time, not his). The Archive/Install is also highly likely to fix almost all software problems, but if it's something corrupted in your user settings, then it might not, in which case you'll be back and he'll have to deal with you. So he's suggesting killing a fly on a window with a sledgehammer, when maybe a flyswatter would work just as well (and cause less collateral damage to your house). I understand the motivations of a busy Apple Genius, but from your point of view, it would be better to try the other things before finally going to the erase and install.
Remember to do that backup before trying any of these things.
In general Macs do not need to have system software reinstalled. In fact I have never had to do it as a repair/diagnostic step on any of my machines using Mac OS X (except that one Archive and Install I did, but that was on a healthy system to go from 10.2 to 10.3). -

Backup file corrupted- How do I recover or locate older backup files?
I synced my original iPhone (with 2.0 software) a few times last night to make sure everything I had on the iPhone was synced to my computer before I restored it, and sold it on ebay. It backed up the iPhone a few times and always wanted to restore it everytime. Well the last time I attempted to sync the iPhone I interrupted the backup process by 'x-ing' out of it during the sync. Now I am trying to get my 3G iPhone synced with the backup of my original iPhone and it is saying that the file is corrupt. Obviously this is because I interrupted the backup process.
So my question is: Is there a way for me to locate an older backup file that may only be an hour older than the corrupt file?
In the preference settings in iTunes I can see the backup files for my phone, but it only lists one, which is the corrupt one. And I searched the finder for recent files, hoping I could find the corrupt file, locate the folder its in and there find older non-corrupt files. Alas, no luck.
I've already restored the original iPhone so the info is gone from that phone. Is there any hope of finding a non-corrupt backup file? Please help. You can find your backup file here:
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
It seems that iTunes lists all of the ones that are in that folder.
I just lost my backup, too. More than a year's worth of settings. I can't find any way of "fixing" the corrupt backup. It seems that photos are gone forever, if they weren't imported into iPhoto, but I did find this software to recover notes, sms, and call logs:
http://homepage.mac.com/vaughn/msync/#VER
The developer seems like kind of a passive aggressive borderline extortionist, but the software seems to work. -
My MacBook Pro it is not starting, it shots down while it is uploading the system, i tried to repair it by using the Disc Recovery, it says "Ishould back up all my information before trying to fix the problem as it's seem to be a problem with the disc" and there is no way to fix it, so is there any way to recover my files before i reinstall the system?
Connect it to another Mac with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable, start it up with the T key held down, and try either copying the files off or running a data recovery product.
