ETL on SAP BW

I m starting in SAP BW world, so one of the questions I got is how can I start my ELT activities with SAP BW???

  • Data Migration from Legacy system to ECC systems via ETL through SAP PI

    Hi All,
I wanted to know if we can migrate the data from Legacy systems to ECC systems via PI.
What I understand is there is ETL tool is used to extract the data from legacy system, and what client is looking to load that data via PI?
Can we do that ? I am concerned because this will involve mass data?
If I have to use PI , I see option of  PROXY / IDOC /FILE as receiver in ECC system (take the data from ETL)?
Can somebody has done this earlier , please share the approach.
    Thanks,
    Pushkar Patel

    Hi ,
I require few details from you.
    1. What ETL tool you are using, If Informatica, it already have PowerConnect to connect to SAP. So you can create source and Target Structure and also you can use RFC's to send data to R/3. Else, for other ETL tools, can you prepare RFC's or any other way to send data to R/3. let me know the tool.
    2. Does R/3 contains the master data tables? If yes, then try to use LSMW for Mass upload of data to tables.
If your client don't want to use either of these options please elaborate, what is the case.

  • SAP FC: Upload master data

    Hi,
I need to upload the master data of my dimensions.
I know I can copy the row from an excel file and paste them into my dimension.
However I need to upload directly an entire .csv file as we do with the data of a package, or for example using an ETL like SAP FIM.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks,
    Matteo

    Hi Matteo,
The only way to import master data (reference member of a dimension or reference table)  into BFC is to use the copy/paste function in EXCEL:
To copy/paste from Excel to SAP BusinessObjects Financial Consolidation
1.In Excel, select the columns or rows to be copied.
    2.Select Edit > Copy.
3.In the "Dimension Builder" module, in Load Data mode, select the reference table or dimension to  be filled in.
      4.Select Edit > Paste.
The progress bar displays information on how the import is progressing as well as the code of the
    member being pasted.
The "Import Result" dialog box appears with the result of the copy/paste performed.
For more details, you can refer to the section Copying and pasting reference members from SAP BusinessObjects Financial Consolidation to Excel in the user guide.

  • Real Advantages of Data Integrator integrated with SAP

    Hi
Can anybody please tell me what is the real advantages of Data Integrator reading from SAP R3 / ECC and performing ETL to SAP BW 7.
I do not know enough on the intergration between the two systems. I have a perspective client looking at the solotion but needs some motivation.
    Thanks

I would definitely not go down that route. There is good R/3 to BW integration, without BODI in the middle. In this scenario I would see BODI as overhead only, which will slow your development down and will show your day to day load processes down. I can't see any benefit at all.
If you have complicated transformations, use ABAP in your transformations. That is much more powerful than scripting on the BODI side.
If you do use BODI you will find it a struggle first to extract data from R/3 and then to load data into BW. You probably end up creating a lot of extra objects on both sides just to make BODI work. BODI will certainly not make your load processes better performing and from a maintenance point of view I don't see any benefits at all.
Maybe in the future when BODI has a better integration with both R/3 and BW it might become useful, but at this point in time I fail to see any benefits.
I would only use BODI if I wanted to integrate data from various platforms, not for a single (SAP) platform.
I would advise against a scenario using BODI for loading R/3 to BW.
    I hope this helps...

  • ETL or ETTL

i am very new to SAP BW and have seen ETL and ETTL as very frequently used terms in BW architecure.I got the idea of extraction, transffering, transformation and Loading. What i got stuck is that, Is there any difference between ETL and ETTL? are they both the same.

    Hi Abhilash,
    <b>ETTL</b>
Besides the difference in designing the database, building a data warehouse involves a critical task that does not arise in building an OLTP system: to extract, transfer, transform, and load (ETTL) data from diverse data sources into the data
In data extraction, we move data out of source systems, such as an SAP R/3 system. The challenge during this step is to identify the right data. A good knowledge of the source systems is absolutely necessary to accomplish this task.
In data transfer, we move a large amount of data regularly from different source systems to the data warehouse. Here the challenges are to plan a realistic schedule and to have reliable and fast networks.
In data transformation, we format data so that it can be represented consistently in the data warehouse. For example, we might need to convert an entity with multiple names (such as AT&T, ATT, or Bell) into an entity with a single name (such as AT&T). The original data might reside in different databases using different data types, or in different file formats in different file systems. Some are case sensitive; others may be case insensitive.
In data loading, we load data into the fact tables correctly and quickly. The challenge at this step is to develop a robust error-handling procedure.
    <b>ETL</b>
ETL: Extracting , transforming and loading is the process of reading (extracting) from heterogeneous sources and transform them so that discrete data from different sources gets integrated and then loading into the data warehouse.
Extracting: Reading and understanding the source data and copying the parts that are needed to the data staging area for further work.
Transforming: Data transformations are often the most complex and, in terms of processing time, the most costly part of the ETL process.
Loading: Discrete data from different sources gets integrated and then loading into the data warehouse

  • What is the olap in bw ?

    hi experts,
today i received an architect document which discribe the architect of the DW system .
       the architect shows below:
    some data sources -
    > ETL -
    >DW (SAP BW )   -
    > ETL -
    >OLAP -
    >some report display tools
what makes me confussed is what the OLAP component is ? now i have create some cubes  and what should i do to implements the OLAP component ?
i think the olap is just the drill down , filter function. can someone tell me what the olap is ? your help is appreciated and assign points if it helps!

    Hi,
SAP Business Information Warehouse uses OLAP technology for the analysis of data held in the data warehouse. Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) characterizes BW as a Decision Support System. OLAP allows decision-makers to quickly and interactively analyze the multi-dimensionally modeled data appropriate to business Considerations.
InfoProviders allow this data to be viewed.  As data is stored in InfoCubes optimized for the reading of data, InfoCubes and MultiProviders for InfoCubes should be the preferred InfoProvider.

  • Bi Content in 7.0 - Did SAP Convert all content to use new ETL process?

    Hello.
I am working with BI 7.0 for the first time.  I have 8 years of BW 3.x experience.  We are starting a new BI project and we are in the process of activating Business Content.  We have BI_CONT level 7 (the latest as of today I believe).  I appears that SAP has not converted over its Business Content to use the new ETL process (Transformations, DTP's, etc).  For example, I am looking at basic areas such as AP, AR, SD, MM, GL, etc and the BI content is still using the 3.x ETL (transfer rules, update rules). Is something not installed right on my system or has SAP not converted it's content to the new ETL yet?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Jose,
Some new content is released using the new DTP.  Most content remains in its delivered 3.x format.  If you want to use DTPs for this content you have to manually create the DTPs after installing the 3.x objects.  If you right-click on an InfoCube, you will see some new options in the context menu, including "Create Transformation...," and "Create Data Transfer Process...."  Context menu for DataSouce now contains a "Migrate" option that will allow you to migrate to the new DTP from 3.x.  Also, other objects such as Transfer Rules and Update Rules contain context menu options for "Create Transformation."
    Hope this helps.

  • Is SAP BODS the best ETL tool for a complex BI Environment

    Hi All
We are in the process of rationilising our BI / Analytics environment.
We currently have SAP ECC6 as our ERP system, SAP BW as our Warehouse and BO for WEB and Dashboard fron ends. In additon we have a small instance of COGNOS which is largely fed with flat file loads but some Oracle and ECC6 data.
In addition we are evaluating Big data solutions with Teradata the current lead.
We are in danger of having multiple ETL tools associated with the main BI applications and so we are comparing SAP BODS with IBM Datastage with a view to slecting one of them as our only ETL tool.
Does anyone have any compatability information for SAP BODS with Cognos and Teradata? The main function required would be extracting from ECC6 into SAP BW, Cognos and Teradata.
    Thanks
    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,
Cognos is a presentation tool so no worries as far integration is concerned.
As far teradata is concerned, kindly see the following doc:

  • SAP MDM and Informatica ETL as Integration Tool

    HI Expert's
We have a Scenario where i want to use Informatica ETL as a Middle ware. Informatica will pull the data from legacy and will post a tab delimited file in MDM inbound folder.
can any one guide me how to achieve this ? what all steps need to be defined at Informatica ETL Level does any one know ?
I wont be using FTP for this activity si is there any other way for this?
Thanks in advance to all of you.
    Regards
    Praful.

    Hi Praful,
You are free to use any middleware as long as it gives data in required format to MDM
It depends what data you want to pull from source system using middleware. for Main table data (records) I am sure Middleware like informatica can place data in MDM inbound folder directly, then you don't need to Make it as FTP enabled. If NOT then you need tomake FTP enabled.
About reference data you need to decide how will you pull that from source system. Since it is not very frequent activity and if you have less number look-ups then even we can prepare data in spreadsheet and pull in MDM. Also check with Informatica if they can pull reference data from source system and place in MDM inbound folder of respective ports. If possible then you don't need to make it FTP enabled.
Having Informatica as middleware will also be helpful to carry your cleasing actvity. Update us on your views.
    Cheers,

  • BODS 3.1 : SAP R/3 data extraction -What is the difference in 2 dataflows?

    Hi.
Can anyone advise as to what is the difference  in using the data extraction flow for extracting Data from SAP R/3 ?
    1)DF1 >> SAPR/3 (R3/Table -query transformation-dat file) >>query transformation >> target
This ABAP flow generates a ABAP program and a dat file.
We can also upload this program and run jobs as execute preloaded option on datastore.
    This works fine.
    2) We also can pull the SAP R/3 table directly.
DF2>>SAPR/3 table (this has a red arrow like in OHD) >> Query transformation >> target
THIS ALSO Works fine. And we are able to see the data directly into oracle.
Which can also be scheduled on a job.
BUT am unable to understand the purpose of using the different types of data extraction flows.
When to use which type of flow for data extraction.
Advantage / disadvantage - over the 2 data flows.
What we are not understanding is that :
if we can directly pull data from R/3 table directly thro a query transformation into the target table,
why use the Flow of creating a R/3 data flow,
and then do a query transformation again
and then populate the target database?
There might be some practical reasons for using these 2 different types of flows in doing the data extraction. Which I would like to understand.  Can anyone advise please.
    Many thanks

Edited by: Indumathy Narayanan on Aug 22, 2011 3:25 PM

    Hi Jeff.
Greetings. And many thanks for your response.
Generally we pull the entire SAP R/3 table thro query transformation into oracle.
For which we use R/3 data flow and the ABAP program, which we upload on the R/3 system
so as to be able to use the option of Execute preloaded - and run the jobs.
Since we do not have any control on our R/3 servers nor we have anyone on ABAP programming,
we do not do anything at the SAP R/3 level
I was doing this trial and error testing on our Worflows for our new requirement
    WF 1 : which has some 15 R/3 TABLES.
For each table we have created a separate Dataflow.
And finally in between in some dataflows, wherein, the SAP tables which had lot of rows, i decided to pull it directly,
    by-passing the ABAP flow.
And still the entire work flow and data extraction happens ok.
In fact i tried creating a new sample data flow and tested.
Using direct download and - and also execute preloaded.
    I did not see any major difference in time taken for data extraction;
Because anyhow we pull the entire Table, then choose whatever we want to bring into oracle thro a view for our BO reporting or aggregate and then bring data as a table for Universe consumption.
Actually, I was looking at other options to avoid this ABAP generation - and the R/3 data flow because we are having problems on our dev and qa environments - giving delimiter errors.  Whereas in production it works fine. Production environment is a old set up of BODS 3.1. QA and Dev are relatively new enviornments of BODS. Which is having this delimiter error.
I did not understand how to resolve it as per this post : https://cw.sdn.sap.com/cw/ideas/2596
And trying to resolve this problem, I ended up with the option of trying to pull directly the R/3 table. Without using ABAP workflow.  Just by trial and error of each and every drag and drop option. Because we had to urgently do a POC and deliver the data for the entire e recruiting module of SAP.
I dont know whether i could do this direct pulling of data - for the new job which i have created,
which has 2 workflows with 15 Dataflows in each worflow.
And and push this job into production.
And also whether i could by-pass this ABAP flow and do a direct pulling of R/3 data, in all the Dataflows in the future for ANY of our SAP R/3 data extraction requirement.  And this technical understanding is not clear to us as regards the difference between the 2 flows.  And being new to this whole of ETL - I just wanted to know the pros and cons of this particular data extraction.
As advised I shall check the schedules for a week, and then we shall move it probably into production.
    Thanks again.
    Kind Regards

  • SAP BI Report Publication on CRM Web UI Reports

    Hi Experts,
Im required to post a BI report on Web UI.
I did the customization for the same in the path.
SproCRMUI FrameworkUI Framework DefinationDisplay SAP NetWeaver BI Report in CRM..
Then I created a Logical Link id with the BI Report assigned to the Navigation Bar Profile and made the link visible in the define business role
It works fine in development, but when i transport the request to quality for testing I recieve an RFC error that the client cannot be reached, This is because the RFC i assigned to the report is also getting transported to Quality and causing the error. Usually RFC's are not transported but they are assigned client specific in the system that it is transported.
So can anyone help me to find out a soultion to the problem so that RFC is not transported in the transport request.
    Plz help...

    Hi  Aravind,
please be aware in CRM 7.0 there are two different options for analysis:
    1. CRM Interactive Reporting (see Building Block C41)
    2. CRM Analytics (Using a complete BI-System)
In your case you followed BB41, so you can use Interactive Reports.
The error you get in WEB UI is for the BI reports (option 2). This option needs a whole BI-System.
The links to these reports were delivered by default. So if you want to use these reports you need a BI consultant for setting a up new BI-System and the neccessary configuration for the ETL-Process.
If you dont want to use B reports, you can simply make them invisible in your web-ui configuration.
    Kind regards
