Everything quitting...

I have what seems to be a serious issue, cause I can't seem to resolve this after 2 days, and nights. My finder/Preferences quits on me when I try to select any other playback app. Logic pro quits on me every time I try to open it , Quicktime quits on me every time also. I've tried everything under the sun. Reinstalling the Apogee software, removed the last plug-ins I installed before this issue, changed the fire-wire cables, even took the Apogee ensemble to a friends house and hooked it up, and the Apogee worked fine. So there off course must be something in my system that is causing this.
HEEELLPP!!!!!!

No I'm not on Leopard, I'm still on Tiger. This is some of the the crash report I'm getting

Please Help. Snow Leopard - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing.
Basically, I have been using snow leopard for about 1-2 weeks now without any problems, apart from the strange trackpad expose glitch, but I can live with that. But a new problem has arisen that I CANNOT live with. Basically I plugged in my MiniDisplay > VGA adaptor and a Wacom internet tablet for the first time. And when it booted up rather than just the usual spinning gear, their was a progress bar as-well. Then it booted into Safe Mode.?
Everything was fine in safe mode apart from spotlight didn't work properly so I rebooted and this time it loaded normally. EXCEPT about 5 minutes after I logged on the top menu bar started to flash on and off about ever 1-2 seconds and virtually every single application would quit unexpectedly before even loading. I haven't really looked into it apart from a quick search on google which doesn't seem to bring up anything similar, but atm I am having to use my bootcamp partition with windows installed (shock horror :D) just so I can browse the internet.
    Additional details -
I have tried resetting PRAM + NVRAM with no joy
While logging on (before it crashes), menu items (e.g. Airport, Battery Indicator, Facebook Notifier) all load up on the far right BEFORE the clock, which never happened before the problem, don't know if this will help isolate the problem, but its worth mentioning..
Don't really want to go down the fresh install route if possible, as I did this with leopard about 2 months before Snow Leopard was released

I noticed it some weeks after installing Snow Leopard, and didn't think much about it since I have a Wacom mouse, and the Wacom driver often has some little peculiarities at startup with the Mac OS--sometimes everything is perfectly ordinary, there will be an OS update and a little oddness shows up, the driver eventually gets updated and the oddness disappears until some other OS update, and so on. I just figured that was what it was until my brother asked about the missing the menu bar after startup, which reappears with a click. He doesn't use a Wacom mouse, but he does have some other 3rd party mouse. I don't know whether 3rd party mouse drivers are at fault or not. But it is not a problem with the SystemUIServer.....the entire menu bar is missing, not just a goof-up on the Spotlight end, where SystemUIServer is in charge of things. Since simply clicking the mouse brings the menu bar up I've never even bothered to check the logs to see if anything is noted there.

  • The blue screen appears and everything quits, what's the problem ?

    Hello !
I would like to have some help or info. I have a problem that started a few weeks ago. Sometimes, my OS X quits, the screen turns to blue (with the color pinwheel) and then it goes back to the desktop. This problem doesn't only occur with applications. It happened when I threw something in the trash.
I'm using Mac OS 10.2.8 on an iMac DV 400 mhz. I only have 192 mb of RAM. That could be part of the problem.
I've looked in other discussions to find an answer, but I did not really find one. Can someone help me please ?
    Thank you !!
iMac DV   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Well, at least you've ruled out some more possibilities.
First, two more pieces of advice: it shouldn't be causing this problem, but under normal circumstances, there is NO reason to power off your computer. An easy way to let it sleep during the day is via System Preferences, Energy Saver. You may also want to use the Desktop & Screen Saver option in System Preferences, if you haven't already.
Second, why are you powering-off your modem at night? As long as you have your firewall on you should be protected. Remember, this is a Mac, NOT a vulnerable Windows machine! (Your firewall is on automatically when you get your Mac. Check the Firewall pane of the Sharing option in System Preferences to be sure.)
    OK, on to more possibilities:
Do you have File Vault on? I've never used it, and don't know much about it, but it does sometimes cause problems. If you can, try turning it off temporarily and see if anything changes (System Preferences, Security).
In an earlier post, you said you'd done "most" of the system maintenance things. Your difficulty sounds a bit like it might be a permissions problem. If you haven't repaired permissions, do so.
Are you still having the problem when emptying the trash? If so, do you have more than one user? If not, set one up temporarily. See if the other user(s) have the same problem. If not, the next item is probably true.
Another possibility is a corrupted Finder preferences file. Find the com.apple.finder.plist in your library/preferences folder. Move it to the desktop temporarily, then close all finder windows and re-open one. Now try emptying the trash again.
Are you using the "regular" empty the trash option, or "secure"? Try the other and see if anything changes. Do you use the "warning" before emptying the trash? If not, turn it on temporarily. Now empty the trash and note just where the problem starts ... before or after the warning?

  • Everything quits. I tried AOL but it quits

I have been using eHarmony and access the dating boards there. There has been no problem. But suddenly when I try I get an error saying safari can't open the page because of redirects back to the original page. I tried using AOL but it quits every time I try to access the discussion boards. And they suggested IE, but the ball just spins on that and it doesn't go anywhere. I've tried repairing permissions, resetting safari and restarting computer ( flat panel iMac 800mhz with Tiger ) but getting to this one site still will not work, although no problem on other sites. I've shut down all other applications and just had safari or one of the other browsers going but still no go. Any ideas?

    HI Gerald,
<Can't you just drag your Safari icon to the trash and drag another one down from preferences, or isn't it that simple?>
The only thing you are accomplishing by dragging the Safari icon to the Trash, is just that. No effect on Safari preferences.
Do you understand the path? /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. (YourName) In the window on the right open "Library" ... and then "Preferences". The com.apple.Safari.pllist is in the Preferences folder. Just drag and drop it on your Desktop. Launch Safari and try to access eHarmony. (There's an eHarmony.com ad on TV just now LOL) If you can without any problems, drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Your Mac will create a new Safari pref file for you.
It takes time and practice to understand an operating system, whether it's Windows or Mac. We all started from the beginning. If it weren't for the good Mac volunteers here, I wouldn't be volunteering. I owe them all a debt of gratitude. We just do the best we can to make suggestions to help you to resolve any issues you are experiencing.
One thing that would help us help you... click the Apple logo top left in your Menu Bar. The Menu Bar runs across the very top of your Desktop. Menu Bar on the left, Status Bar on the right. The Status Bar is icons only. Click that Apple logo then click, "About This Mac"... a window will open and display the exact Mac OS version you are running. Please reply with that version number. And if you are indeed running Tiger, (10.4.x), could you please change your profile to reflect that. On the right side of this page where it says: My Settings... that's where you can change it.
    Thanks!

  • Everything quits unexpectedly within seconds

last night my computer got very sluggish and froze in front row, so i did a hard reset and now every application, including finder, freezes and quits right when i open it, some dont even open before doing this (even with additional normal resets). what do i do? my computer is useless right now.

I would boot to the install disk (holding the C key when starting up your machine) then choose english as your language. Then from the top of the next screen choose the utility menu, then disk utility. Select your HD from the left hand side and then run repair disk permissions and repair disk.
    Hope it helps

  • Why does everything quit unexpectedly?

I got my Macbook about a month ago and other than the fact in runs faster than Windows, I am less than happy with it. Mainly because almost every program "quits unexpectedly".
    -AIM
    -Microsoft Word
    -Quicktime
    -Microsoft Office Update
All of these programs quit unexpectedly everytime i try and use them. Why is it doing this and how do I fix it?
I would like to thank anyone in advance for their help and let everyone know I'm not looking for an alternative programs but how to fix the existing ones.

You may wish to start by doing some basic maintenance on you Mac to make sure that you don't have ahy cache, or disk ,or permission issues. Follow the steps in the following FAQ to get you started.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Once you get past all of that then you want to make sure that all of your software is up to date. It will be tough to do when the Office updater quits but if the maintenance routines solves that issue then make sure you are completely updated with Word and all the other Office apps.
You may also want to update your system software by using Software Update.
I use Office 2004 on two different Macs, one at work and one at home and I have had very very few issues with either of them. I use an older version of Office on another Mac and it too has not caused me any significant issues. I have not had any unexpected quits.
It may be related to some sort of font issue but I am not knowledgable about this aspect of Mac use.
There is some information on this subject and the general subject of apps quitting here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/multipleappsquit.html
I can't think of anything else at this time. Hope you get it sorted out.

  • Stop and Quit LabVIEW Vi

I don't fully understand why I need the stop and quit labview vi.  When a program finish running, doesn't it stop automatically?  Why is the stop vi needed?  If vi stops automatically when it is done, couldn't the programmer write the program in such a way that would cause the vi to stop when needed without using the stop vi?
When a program is running in exe, why is quiting labviw needed?  Doesn't everything quit at the end of the program?  In development, there is really no reason for the developer to want the LabVIEW to quit automatically, right?

You never need the stop.vi. Its function is similar to the abort button, unconditionally stopping the VI, even if it is trapped in a parallel loop that cannot be stopped directly due to incorrect coding. Since the current state of other code parts is random when stop is called, the outcome might be very unpredictable and the program might stop without a proper shutdown sequence, leaving your instrument spinning or the hight voltages turned on.
For more details, read the online help. I never use it!
"Quit LabVIEW" has similar problems. You don't really want to use it during development, because, you might have unsaved changes.
My larger applications don't have a stop button, and can only be stopped with the [X] in the upper right corner. (Like any typical program: When was the last time you had to first "stop" internet explorer or MS word? :d) I use a filtering event to catch it, discard it, initiate a clean shutdown, and after everything is done, either stop in the development system or quit labview in the case of a built application (see code image).

  • Anything I print causes my apps to unexpectedly quit

I have an HP 1012 laser printer. Its plugged via USB to my iMac G4 and I have the printer shared out via the 802.11b airport card installed in the imac. The imac has a static IP and Printing from the iMac is fine.
Printing from my MacBook running 10.4.10 via wireless has always worked for me in the past. Recently I decided to rebuild the iMac with a clean configuration of 10.4.10.
Since the rebuild I can not print anything from any of my machines via the wireless. Anything I select to print will result in the application just quitting. I don't even get a choice to select PDF or Fax. I have check the drivers and cables and even upgraded to 10.4.11 and still everything quits. I have also tried printing from my MBP running Leopard and still my apps all quit
My entire network is connected via an airport snow base station - 802.11b.
Has anyone had this type of issue and have you found a fix for it?

OK I figured it out. The imac which I had the printer connected to was using a factory shipped driver that came preloaded on the Tiger CD. Its version number was 1.4.1. I then saw that my two Macbooks were using version 2.0. I tried to download a updated version from HPs website. HP lists the driver as being installed with the OS so there is no option to download it.
So I guess some how my PPC install of Tiger has a older version of the driver than my two Intel Macbooks. I googled around for the drivers and came across this handy set of drivers which seem to work for many printers and Mac OS X.
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
I updated the drivers on the iMac Deleted the old printers on my Macbooks. reinstalled the Printers on my Macbooks and BOOM!!!!! -- all my machines can now print wirelessly. My apps also no longer unexpectedly quit. Also wanted to mention its works flawlessly with Leopard.
Hope this helps anyone in need of the fix.

  • Migrating from SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2012R2 Standard with 365

Im looking to move SBS 2011 to Server 2012R2 standard and with a 365 migration as well.
    Im thinking
    BPA for AD (health check)
Add the Server2012R2 as a DC
    Ensure replication
    Move DHCP
    Change DNS
Now this is where I get lost, now Im lost to use either dirsync or add essentials service, I have gone for standard and 30 cals with the option  as I have 28 users and the essentials service would make everything quite nice for remote access and backups
etc....  however I don't know whether to just use dirsync with password replication instead ?
Currently Im aiming towards getting the dc up and running then enabling essentials on the dc but I dont know how it will effect SBS and having essentials on the same network and sync'ing people to the cloud ? So Should I use DirSync on a different server
instead to sync up to azure ?
Finally with 365 I have only ever done a migration involving an export of pst's from an exchange box and then on a new domain with new pc's and reimport the pst's on the user accounts in outlook.
However I have read when migrating to 365 was using exchange 2010 there was a application
to move everything across however you needed an ssl cert iirc ? so I dont know how it works now since the nice new dashboard upgrade (assuming the tool has been updated like dirsync)
along with the above how does AD now know where exahcnge if you use the migration app with an ssl cert and is it a case of still running the 365 config tool to configure each user to look at their mail in the
cloud ? Also is it a good idea to enable essentials from the start of the 2012r2 dc for replication top 365 or to use dirsync ?
then finally when replications is all good start transferring the FSMO roles over to the new DC and demote and remove the SBS server
I have seen (below) but i dont think it covers this scenario and I cant be the only person in this situation =\ ?

I’m a little confused with the description. Did you mean that set up DC (Windows Server 2012 Standard) and
then install the Windows Server Essentials Experience role? If so, when you migrate, please refer to the article:

  • Non-opaque colours

    Greetings,
This question is a bit of a sequel to this other thread. The last couple of days
I've been trying to find visual 'pleasing' way to show an 'alert' or 'alarm'
status for some real time processes. With the help of Camickr I started
off using a glass pane that simply draws a non-opaque red colour in
front of an entire JInternalFrame. I noticed a terrible, unacceptable
slowdown w.r.t. the drawing of those real time processes.
I experimented a bit more and I came to the conclusion that everything
done using non-opaque colours is unusable if you want to have anything
drawn fast (~100 times per second). It simply isn't fast enough. All I do
is redraw a couple of JPanels with those glass panes in front of them.
Using opaque colours or other tricks to show an 'alarm' status are fast
enough.More than fast enough, i.e. I've got plenty of time to show an
abundance of other information. It's just those non-opaque colours that
    are a show stopper.
Has anyone else noticed this behaviour (MS Windows and Linux)?
Has anyone else found a workaround to speed things up considerably?
    kind regards,
    Jos

    I don't use the javax.swing.Timer but I do usequite a few threads:
I've tried to compare the difference between using a
Swing Timer and and Thread for animation and I didn't
notice any difference in animation speed. (I just
prefered a Timer because I think its easier to
understand and control the timing of events.Yes I do use TImers, the java.util.Timer class and I schedule them with
the tasks that need to be run. Quite a lot of those tasks have nothing to
do with Swing, just the display stuff which can be en/disabled by the user.
I use quite a lot of those java.util.Timer objects because the device I'm
monitoring is quite a complex device with up to eight "sub devices".
The device itself can be monitored quite slowly: a thermometer, three
A/D colour components, a voltage value, eight bits of digital input and
a digital counter value. Those "sub devices" produce digital colour values:
either sRGB or Lab values as well as an "alarm status" values. Those
sub devices must be sampled quite often. My old view handled everything
quite well but I want the view to be more appealing to the users. Hence
    this topic.
However, I have compared using a single Timer to animate 6
components at once, vs 6 Timers to animate a single component
each. A single Timer is almost twice as fast at repainting the
components animation as measured by the time it takes the
components to travel its vertical distance.I keep your remark in mind. Maybe I can "bundle" some of those "monitoring"
tasks using a single timer. The problem is that I monitor that device using
a serial line where everything has to be sequenced. I don't want any
congestion on that part (which has nothing to do with Swing so it renders
this thread (sic) totally off topic ;-)
    [ snipped some code ]
So I guess I'm suggesting that you try to merge your multiple Threads
into a single Thread.I read you; the trouble is (see above) that those 'pulling from the device',
'pushing into the controller' thingies are totally independent events/tasks.
As the new view runs now, it is slowing down the entire machinery.
I never realized (I'm not a Swing guru) that all those visuals take up so
    much time.
thanks a bunch for your reply and
    kind regards,
    Jos
ps. I'll play with your code and see what I can learn from it.

  • Looping through inbox items on timer event is really slow...?

    Hi,
I have an issue with a email sync event that I am running.  Essentially, I am given a date (the received date of the last email synced) via another process and then need to return all the emails in the user's inbox the where receivedDate > this given
    date.
I have a timer object than triggers my sync event every 15 mins.  I also have a button that allows the user to manually activate the sync - this basically changes the timer to 3 secs and so it fires the sync event.
If the sync event is fired manually as per above, it loops through everything quite quickly (~12,000 emails in 30 secs) and I can stored the sender/recipient and received time data I require from these in a list of objects, which I sync later on in a background
process.  During this loop the main UI freezes up, which is fine since I show a progress bar so the user knows how long they need to wait, and a large sync like this should only occur on their first sync theoretically.  If the first sync event is
fired without the manual input - so still called from the same timer event, but just on the normal 15 min event, not the shortened 3 sec one - then it runs differently.  The sync takes a lot lot longer, and the UI doesn't freeze up.
I presume this might be because it is fired slightly differently and does not hog up the main thread, but rather shares it with normal Outlook operations.  Maybe the operations are being run on a background thread and then keep having to jump into the
main thread to access the email items...?  Either way, I'm not quite sure how this is happening since the only difference is the user pressing a button that changes the timer.interval.  The code that is run is the same, and the button press doesn't
    trigger the actual sync itself.
Is there a way I can force this first sync to always run solely in the main thread, it can freeze up Outlook and show the progress bar until it is done?  Ideally any subsequent syncs would then be run with no progress bar and no freezing up of the UI.
    Many thanks,
    Tom

    Hello Tom,
    > Maybe the operations are being run on a background thread and then keep having to jump into the main thread to access the email items...?
You shouldn't use another threads when dealing with the Outlook object model. Office applications use the single threaded apartment (STA) model and don't support multithreading. All calls made from another threads are marshalled by Outlook to the main
thread. However, you can use a low-level code (Extended MAPI) to access the data from secondary threads. For example, you can use Redemption which is based on Extended MAPI.
    >  it loops through everything quite quickly (~12,000 emails in 30 secs)
Instead of looping over all items in the folder I'd recommend using the
    Find/FindNext
    or
Restrict methods of the Items class. You can read more about them in the following articles:
How To: Use Find and FindNext methods to retrieve Outlook mail items from a folder (C#, VB.NET)
How To: Use Restrict method to retrieve Outlook mail items from a folder
You can use the System.Windows.Forms.Timer class which uses the main thread for invoking the Tick event. The .NET
Framework Class Library provides three different timer classes: System.Windows.Forms.Timer, System.Timers.Timer, and System.Threading.Timer. Each of these classes has been designed and optimized for use in different situations. The Comparing
the Timer Classes in the .NET Framework Class Library article examines the three timer classes and helps you gain an understanding of how and when each class should be used.
    Also you may find the
AdvancedSearch method of the Application class helpful. Pay special attention to the fact that the search is performed in another thread. You don’t need to run another thread manually since the
AdvancedSearch method runs it automatically in the background. See
Advanced search in Outlook programmatically: C#, VB.NET for more information.

  • Bluetooth won't work on my iMac

Hi, my Bluetooth on my iMac all of a sudden isn't working. I have a wireless keyboard, mighty mouse, magic mouse, trackpad and an aftermarket add on LMP number pad, all BT and nothing works. I made the mistake of rebooting (thinking that would solve) but now I'm sitting at log in, unable to do anything. Frustrating! I've done:
    - batteries (always the first option, although when everything quits, it isn't batteries)
    - shut down everything BT, turned off my iMac, unplugged it, waited a min, re plugged, turned on only the keyboard and one mouse, watched them blink for an eternity trying to pair, with no success
    - every other little combination I could think of
I can't access the settings to try and do anything, although I did that when it first happened before shutting it down, but shutting off and trying to pair, but the same thing, the wheel goes 'round until it decided to stop.
I tried logging onto my iMac with my MacBook but as I was only on the log in screen, I couldn't do it, it just showed "server not available"

    - Late 2012 27" iMac purchased new in May 2013 (Apple Store) 3.4 Ghz, 32 Gigs RAM, OS Mavericks 10.9.1
    - Hard drive is partitioned with Parallels 8, Windows 8.1, RAM split between the two (didn't switch over before powering off to see if Windows was working)

I know I only posted this thing a half an hour ago, but I got it running in a weird way. I hope this helps someone else.
I rebooted again and all was the same except that this time I noticed the generic "guest" user. A small aha, and I clicked on it, it opened to the stock Desktop photo but with no icons or files. Thinking nothing's happening, I clicked on System Preference anyways in the tray, still nothing, but about 30 seconds later, Preferences fired up, I went to BT and it was turned off, which it wasn't on my main profile. After a few second delay it started recognizing my stuff. After the Keyboard and mouse fired up, I turned on the Magic Pad, it too initiated. I've left the LMP Bluetooth Keypad shut off for now, I had a hard time getting it running when I got it at Xmas and it seemed to affect my Apple Wireless Keyboard a little at that time, and want to work for a week or so before before introducing it again.
Nothing magic, just seeing the not so obvious is what did it. I'd still like to know how all this happened in the first place but so happy to be back at it!

  • Help!!!!! How do I find out if my Mac has a virus

Help!!!!!! I was searching the web and some window popped out (Apple window) recommending that I download something to do with antivirus. I guess the website that I was about to visit had a virus. I clicked ok and the next thing I know some things started popping out that the website I guess had a virus and that (trojan and other stuff) oh and some window stuff popped out. However, I just pressed clear on everything quit Safari and nothing else has happened. How do I know if my Mac got a virus for sure. So far everything is fine but I just want to make sure. Anybody please, any suggestions!!!!!!

That is web-phishing. You should avoid such sites. You don't have a virus. Turn on your browser's ad blocker which may help prevent such pop up windows from occurring.
