  • Reporting Attribute dimension on Planning Database in HFR

Can you report attribute dimension values in Hyperion Financial Reports when connection to the Planning database connection? I am not seeing Planning Details as an option in HFR as only Planning appears. Is there something that I'm missing? I would like to report Smart List alphanumeric values on HFR but also be able to pull in the attribute dims, yet that doesn't seem possible.

    Hi Alex
That sounds like a bug, I have used attribute dimensions in reporting lots of times in earlier versions and I'm sure that some of those used planning rather than essbase connections. I've not read the documentation around the subject so can't be sure but it sounds pretty fundamental so I'd be surprised if not a bug.
Worth doing a bit of digging on Oracle support or in the readme files or even raising an SR if you have that option.

  • Is it possible to add Attribute(column) to entity via Excel addin?

I can create an entity via the excel addin and update data in it but i cannot add additional columns (attributes)  to it via the excel addin once its created. am i missing something or is it just not possible?

Winston, is this still an issue?

Create a wiki article about it!
I worked around it using the excel addin, but the question is to see if its possible to do this in teh MDS web UI, without using excel, as its not very good design to have to jump from the browser based designer to excel and back in order to manage an MDS model.

  • Retrieve attribute description to Excel Addin for MDS

    I propose a new feature:
retrieve attribute description to Excel Addin for MDS - as
separate row, which would be above attribute-row.
This is especially useful for users - translation into other languages.

Do you think, it would help if we add description as comments of the column name. So user have to hover the mouse to see it?
Also, we already have a work item to support multiple language in the model/entity/attribute name. So based on the client OS, it would show different language for the column name. But I cannot promise when we will deliver it at this moment.

  • Can you hide a dimension value but display one of it's attributes?

Can you hide a dimension value but display one of it's attributes in a query output?

    Hi Prakash,
I assume you are referring to a characteristic ('dimension').
This is possible: If the attribute is a navigational attribute you can include it in the query definition without the 'parent' char.
If the attribute is a Display attr then you can try by setting the Display property of the parent char to No Display (right click the char in the query > Properties)

  • Attribute Dimensions and Excel Retrieves

Dear All,<BR><BR>I have a cube that has a sparse dimension with attributes attached (all at the same level). When I retrieve using different attributes in the retrieve the results are not consistent i.e. some of the sparse members with the same attribute are left out of the result. It appears to happen when branches of the dimension in the same area are separated by a branch with an alternate attribute value (from the same attribute dimension). I have cured this by moving the affected branches next to each other, is this something that I need to watch out for on the design side i.e. to do with the way Essbase handles attribute dimensions? Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Graham,
This is definitely a supported feature in EIS/9.3.1/ASO. I have many models with this type of structure. How you set it up can vary. Usually my Attribute Hierarchies are not that deep, only two to three levels, maybe four in a rare case, so I don't usually use a parent child table to set up the hierarchy (I'm not saying that it won't work, it might, I haven't tried, but same steps should apply). In a typical model I will have my stock table which has a buyer field. Then in another table I will have my attribute structure which will have columns for buyer, teams, and categories.
In EIS OLAP model, you add your attribute hierarchy table and use a join to link it to the main stock table, joining on the buyer field (you are now going from a "star" schema to a "snowflake". Go into the properties and make sure you define all the columns as "Attributes".
Then in Metadata model, drag your categories attribute onto the outline, then drag the teams and set it as a child of categories and finally drag buyer and set as child of teams. You only set the attribute association for the buyer back to the base dimension.
When you run your dim build it will set up your attribute dimension correctly.
Some things to keep in mind, make sure you have a process that ensures for every stock code you have in the main table, you have a matching one in your attribute dim table.
Sometimes, depending on how much manipulation I need to do, instead of joining the tables in EIS I will go back to relational source and create a view that joins the two tables together, then in my OLAP model, I have one table that has three attribute columns, one column for the buyer and then the other two for team and category, from that point setting up in metadata model is the same.
Good luck, let me know if you run into trouble.

  • Best practice excel addin retrievals of attributes of large flat sparse dim

Is anyone aware of a way to quickly lookup attributes of members of large flat sparse dimensions? One would imagine that since there exists a one-to-one relationship between a member and its attribute in the outline, Essbase shouldn't have to parse through the data to populate attributes when drilling down an attribute dimension. However, in practice, Essbase takes forever to return member attributes (depending on the base dimension and other factors, of course). Something similar to the subset rule within member selection would be ideal, but I don't seem to find anything. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Using Attribute Associations to generate a list of base dimension members should not have an overly adverse affect upon the retrieval time.
Introducing an Attribute dimension to a spreadsheet retrieval will slow things down because it introduces dynamic calculation to the query. If there are other dynamically calculated items in the outline, the intersecting dynamic calculations will slow retrieval times even further.

  • Addine New Dimension In An Existing Cube

    Hi fellows,
Im not an expert so need you feedback.
I am supporting a cube that was built a decade ago using Essbase 6.5. It has 7 dimensions (3 dense, 4 sparse). With the new reporting requirement, I need to add a new dimension to be called "BaseTimePeriod" that seems like a Time dimension but will show the "Constant Dollar" amount calcuation for difference Scenarios.
Since the cube has been there for so long, and the expert that has pioneered that cube is no longer in the company. All of our reports uses API being called in MS Excel to retrieve data from the cube and format it the way the users wanted it to be. As well as 75% of our data are user input using the Essbase Excel Add-in, "lock/send" commands.
My problem now is that, since I need to introduce another dimension for the "Constant Dollar" calculation, is there any way that if I add a new dimension the existing process of uploading data by the users as well as retrieving data through Excel API will not be affected?
I tried to add new dimension in the R&D server that we have when I try to retrieve historical data from the cube in the Excel since there is "BaseTimePeriod" dimension before, the Excel report layout gets affected and inserts a new row placing "BaseTimePeriod" in that cell since this not yet there before. And when I try to upload data through Excel Add-in "lock/send" action, it did allow me unless I put a member from the "BaseTimePeriod" to complete the dimension member combination.
    My questions now are:
    1) How can I add a new dimension without impact from the historical data?
    2) Is there any way to place a default value for the new dimension for the historical data so it would complete the dimension member combination, so whenever I retrieve and upload data there will be no problem?
Any insights related to this questions is highly appreciated. Thanks!

I tried to add new dimension in the R&D server that
we have when I try to retrieve historical data from
the cube in the Excel since there is "BaseTimePeriod"
dimension before, the Excel report layout gets
affected and inserts a new row placing
"BaseTimePeriod" in that cell since this not yet
there before. And when I try to upload data through
Excel Add-in "lock/send" action, it did allow me
unless I put a member from the "BaseTimePeriod" to
complete the dimension member combination.Essbase must have all (non-attribute) dimensions represented for any data operation to happen. If you think about it, each cell of data represents the intersection of exactly 1 member from each dimension and, behind the scenes, the storage mechanisms are focused on optimizing those relationships. Thus, you can see how the BaseTimePeriod member got added to your retrieve as Essbase didn't know which member from BaseTimePeriod you wanted and made the assumption that you wanted the dimension level member. If you place that dimension level member into your retrieve range (along side any of the other "page" (i.e. filter) fields, the retrieve will not insert a row. The insertion of the row can be extremely hazardous as it pushes the other rows down by one; your end users may be making decisions that effect the existence of your company based on formulas reading those cells and, effectively, the formulas may be referencing data from the wrong row..
    My questions now are:
    1) How can I add a new dimension without impact from
the historical data?Although my forte is not cube design (I work mostly with frontends to Essbase), most situations I have seen when this happens the historical data is assigned a distinct member within the new dimension (assuming you aren't going to go back and reload the data from the sources and map the data based on the new dimension's values in the dataset.
    2) Is there any way to place a default value for the
new dimension for the historical data so it would
complete the dimension member combination, so
whenever I retrieve and upload data there will be no
problem? As stated above, put a member from the dimension, most likely the dimension member itself, into the existing Excel templates.
    Good Luck!

  • Does Member Selection (SmartView) == Retrieve (Excel AddIn)

I just purchased the "Look Smarter.." book and it starts off by referring to a 'Retrieve' function in the Excel Add-In that pulls dimensions, member and associated data-values from an Essbase db (in my case Sample:Basic). I however have the SmartView Add-In running on Excel 2007, and there isn't any 'Retrieve' function that I can see.. The closest I can find is something called "Member Selection" that can be used to pull in dimension/members names. However this does not seem to pull in any actual data for these dimensions/members. I have already loaded the Sample:Basic db with data, so it's in there somewhere. I just need to know how to pull it all into Excel so that I can continue following along with Mr. Roske!
    Appreciate any input.
    thanks,
    Akshay

    Cameron,
I followed your steps EXACTLY, but it only displays the Year and Market dimensions.. no 133980 data value! Just to confirm that I have the correct sequence, I did the following in order:
    1. loaded data.txt into Demo:Basic in EAS
    2. ran an 'Execute Calculation' of the 'default' calc script in EAS.
    3. opened a fresh Excel workbook and connected to Demo:Basic and activated it
    4. clicked on Refresh.
The only other thing that happens is that a little window with drag-and-drop for 'Product' , 'Account' etc. shows up on the sheet. I tried to do a drag-and-drop of these extra dimensions, followed by another Refresh, but still no data value(s) appear.
The funny thing is everything work perfectly when I use the Excel-Addin instead of SmartView! In fact, when I use Excel-Addin, the 133980 shows up even if I don't explicitly run the default calc script. So, I have a feeling that my problem is localized to SmartView.
    thanks,
    Akshay

  • Excel Addin or SmarView showing #MIssing

    Hi There,
I have my outlines and cube built and data load is successful, I only load one month of data for testing, in my statistics tab, it shows no. of existing blocks has 20,878, however, when I preview data or use either SmartView or excel addin, it always #Missing, I also run the default Calc, it is still showing this.
Anything I can check on this issue?
    Thanks

if/when I have a problem like this I start with something very basic and work backward.
Get a single row from your load file(sql) and in excel enter all the values to try to pull that intersection of data. I'll assume it is at the lowest level of all the dimensions (If not, you have a different problem). If the data exists for that intersection, I would start zooming out one dimension at a time until you do not have data. The first piece will prove you loaded values, the second that you aggregated the database (yes a calc all should have done that, but if you had intelligent calc on, in some instances it might not. ).
If you do not have data, I would try to load the data again and pull it before you aggregate the database, its possible something in the calc wipes out the data. check to make sure all the data is loading at the lowest level

  • Setting up Dynamic Attribute dimension.

Hi,I have a dimension for my clients and a measure dimension for sales. I want to set up an attribute dimension called Band for my Client dimension. This should be set to "Band=Large" when the sales total for the client is more than 20000 USD in the previous year (2001) or it should be set to "band=Small" if the total sales for the previous year is less than 5000 USD or else "Band=Mid" if the total sales in the previous year is between 5000 to 20000 USD. Currently, I use excel sheet from the essbase database extrace the total sales for each range and use the same as input to set the attribute dimension. Is there a easy way to do this using calc script.regardssuja.

No, there isn't. Since attributes are member based, there is no way (at least in Essbase) to dynamically assign an attribute to a member based on a data point. However, there are ways around the problem, but I can see one dilema. What if sales for a client is "large" for a member of one dimension but "small" for another? Members are not intersection based, so a client cannot be tagged as "Large" for one intersection and "Small" for another. If you want to go the attribute route, there may be a way to automate the process you described in your post - perhaps running an extract from Essbase similar to your Excel report and having a script assign the attribute value according to the sales figures. If you want to use a calc script, you could create a "BAND" member in your accounts dimension and assign it a 1 (Small) 2(Medium) or 3 (Large) depending on the sales figures.Hope that helps.Regards,Jade-------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

  • 'Allow Duplicate Members' not compatible with Attribute  Dimensions

When setting the 'Allow Duplicate Members' option on there is a problem if the duplicate member is used as an Attribute. When attempting to apply the member filter to use the attribute Essbase throws an error: Cannot uniquely identify a member, the name [L] is duplicated.
In my case L is duplicated across two dimensions [L=LOCAL as a BOOK_CODE and L=LIABILITY as an ACCOUNT_TYPE].
The ACCOUNT_TYPE is an attribute dimension related to the ACCOUNTS dimension. Both the excel addin and Financial Reports have a problem as their member selection interfaces don't fully qualify the selection.
    This seems like a bug.

When you sync over the cable, it is one set of calendars in one section labeled "From My Mac"  when you sync with iCloud, that is store in a completely separate area labeled "iCloud."  The "From My Mac" calendars are stored on the phone as just "regular" calendars.  The iCloud account are "CalDav" calendars, which syncs with iCloud.  The old mobileme calendars did do what you wanted, sync over the cable and then to mobileme, and that lead to huge data corruption and why Apple made the new mobileme calendars which sync over CalDav only (and cannot talk to the cable) to protect the calendars.  The phone sees them as two separate calendars.
Your best bet is if you want to use calendars on your G4 is to just use the iCloud.com web interface.  I'm also not familiar with the whole drop box thing, so I can't comment on that.

  • How can I disable excel addin on the Server side?

Hi, is there any way to disable excel addin on the server side?
We want to disable it so that no one can modify or read data in the cube in the production environment, even if he or she had installed the add in. Instead, we provide the Planning data forms as the only interface for end-users to read and write. we do this because the add in is very easy to install and users can read and write data in the cube at their will.
As we designed to keep the security filters simple, it is not a good idea to controll data access through security filters.
so, what i'm asking is how to disable excel addin on the server side?
    Thank you for replying.

    Hi,
As Gurus suggested, you will have to restrict viewing of data through dimension level security.
Give access of members to users, only which are relevant to users so that they can't view other user's data/members.
Like give access of members belonging to HR dept only to HR users and give access of Finance dept related members to finance users only.
Hence HR users will view only HR relevant data and won't be able to view (read or write) finance related data and vice-sa-versa.
    Hope this helps

  • How to limit  dimensions values of querybuilder

    Hi,
I want to learn how to limit dimension value in query builder. i want, the user who run the querybuilder can not see a dimension value which i do not want to display.
    For example,
The time dimension has "2000" and "2001" values as default which is defined in database. Normally when i run the querybuilder for create new presentation or calculation, In the dimensions panel of the querybuilder display all values of each of dimension. The user can select values which she/he want from that list.
But i want to limit values which the user can see in the dimensions panel of the querybuilder. for this time dimension example, i want to hide "2001" value from the user. How can i do it. if there is any sample code, please share.
Thank you very much for your helps.

Thanks Thomas, excellent suggestions as always.
If anybody wants more information regarding Thomas' suggestions please refer to
Oracle9i OLAP Developer's Guide to the OLAP DML for the AW Permit command.
In sumamry: To create permission programs, you define two programs with the names permit_read and permit_write. In these programs, you can specify PERMIT commands that grant or restrict access to individual workspace objects. In addition, you write these programs as user-defined functions that return a Boolean value, and the return value indicates to Oracle OLAP whether or not the user has the right to attach the workspace.
For relational security there is an excellent tutorial on the database pages of OTN, follow this link:
    http://otn.oracle.com/obe/start/index.html
then follow the links for Oracle9i Database Release 9.2.0.2 - Security - Creating Label-based Access Control. This module describes how to use Oracle Label Security to setup security based on label policies
These security layers should be transparent to the OLAP metadata layer, therefore, once you have implemented your chosen security method your BI Beans application will only need to connect with the appropriate user to inherit the security layer.
