Excel to Numbers...

I am having one **** of a time trying to open an excel file in numbers.  I sent the file via email and when I open the file it's not acting the same was as when I'm working on it in excel at work.  It's a file that I did not create nor do I fully understand.  There are some formulas and then a final average shown as a percentage.  It works fine in excel but not in numbers.
Is there something that needs to be done before sending it over?  I just emailed the file and then opened it up in Numbers.
I use all Apple products in my personal life; iMac, iPad, and iPhone.  But for my job I have no choice but to use Microsoft products.  I have more experience using Microsoft products and find word and excel much easier to use than Pages and Numbers.  With that said, how well does office for mac perform?  The reason I'm asking is that maybe it's worth the small price to get excel and word for my mac?  I can get office for mac for $9.95 through my job.  I already paid for Numbers and wanted to use Pages and Numbers because of the other devices I have, but at this point things just don't work well together.

How well does excel and word for Mac work?
Excel 2011 for the Mac is a real workhorse that can handle just about anything you throw at it.  It won't do pivot charts or ActiveX controls, doesn't have slicers yet, and some VBA macros require some reworking. But for the most part its compatibility with recent Excel versions for Windows is so good that colleagues on Windows don't even notice you're on a Mac.  Same goes for Word.
Numbers, with its emphasis on tables, makes many things easier to accomplish than in Excel. It imports Excel data well, and has a large subset of Excel formulas that have identical syntax and usage. But it can't handle array formulas, and there is enough of a difference in design philosophy to make it a less than ideal choice when you need to collaborate with Excel users.

  • Is it possible to use an add-on to Excel in Numbers?

I use a data feeder that has been created only for excel. Is it possible with a plugin to use this in Numbers?

This is an own developed plug-in. It is actually an XML service from an Oracle database. So I'm looking for a way to integrate a little tool that works only for Excel to Numbers .

  • Exporting Address Book to Excel or Numbers

Is it possible to export my Address Book to Excel or Numbers, or at the very least Word or iWork? I thought I was able to do this under Leopard or another previous version of OS X

first export any contacts you want as a vcard.
you can convert that vcard to a csv file using this converter for example
    http://labs.brotherli.ch/vcfconvert/
the csv file can then be imported into excel or numbers.

  • Excel Export - Numbers are displayed as text

    Hello,
When the report is exported to excel from SAP LIst Viewer screen -
List -> Export -> Spreadsheet ->All Available format --> In Office 2003 XML format.
The report opens up in excel, the numbers (numerical values) are displayed as text. How can we change the system setting, so when the report is exported to excel, the numbers are not converted to text.
I found SAP Note 1393974 - WD ABAP ALV: Excel export: Numbers are interpreted as text - which is related to WD setting.
But it does not mention about the GUI ALV.
    Appreciate helpful replies.
    Thanks,
    Madhu

    Hi,
    Try this
List->Export->Local file  and then select spreadsheet from the list.
You will get the actual data in excel sheet.

  • From Excel to Numbers

I have moved from Excel to Numbers. There seems to be some things that Numbers can't do, that Excel can, or I could be wrong.
    - you cant write text vertically in a cell, instead you have to insert a text box which then gets exported into excel as a text box
    - you cant freeze cells in numbers
    - when exporting back into excel the worksheet tabs at the bottom change name
    - excel's auto filter isnt supported in numbers
If I am wrong could someone please explain to me how to perform the above actions. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places

You can filter. Hover your mouse at the top column heading and you'll see an option triangle appear.
    Regards,
    others, you are correct.

  • Follow up about Excel and Numbers

I sent an Excel spreadsheet from my MacBook to my IPad and fit is in an email on my iPad.  How can I get it out of the email into Numbers on hype iPad?

    Hello poptiger,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Numbers for iOS (iPad): Send and receive spreadsheets in email messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph3405
Retrieve a Numbers or Microsoft Excel spreadsheet from an email message:
Numbers can open spreadsheets that were saved using some types of file encryption available in Microsoft Office 97 or later. If you can’t open an encrypted Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, try changing the type of encryption or the encryption options used, and then save it again before opening it in Numbers.
Tap the file’s image in the email message to open a document preview.
Open Mail, and then open the message containing the spreadsheet you want.
Tap , and then tap “Open in Numbers.”
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Don't WANT to use Excel, but Numbers doesn't cut it...

    Hi All;
I have been an avid Mac user for 10 years, but I am still having issues when dealing with Numbers and find that what I need to accomplish I can only do with Excel. While it is a great program in and of itself, opening Excel files with Numbers on my iPad/ iPhone is not ideal, and I would love to take advantage of Versions and Auto Save that are now available with Lion as well as the mobile applications. This is not possible with Excel.
Main issue at this point is as follows:
I have a template file that I use for building files that I use multiple times [20-30 times] a day, I also have a file with commonly referred to information. In Excel I can keep my reference file up to date, then use the VLOOKUP formula in the spreadsheet to essentiall auto-fill in the common information. I am trying to accomplish the same thing in Numbers without much luck.
For Example, if I have already created my file, I should be able to update my reference file and have the information readily available to ALL 1000+ files I have already created and be able to access the new information [ie- addresses or contact information] from any of them. Instead, what Numbers appears to be asking me to do is add my ENTIRE reference table to EACH file and update them individually. I know that it doesn't take up that much space on the harddrive, but still, this seems a little ridiculous, and it seems like a step backwards from the system I have already created.
I have searched all of the forums but can't seem to find the answers I need. Is there really no way to reference a sheet/table from a completely separate file in Numbers? I'd love to support Apple, and it's applications, but if they can't do what I need them to do- I just wasted $20.00.

I'm unable to understand why users like you buy a product before testing it to chek if it fit their needs.
There is an iWork free trial version available since jabuary 2009. It's a complete version. It's just restricted to a 30 days period.
Is it so complicated to download it and install it before throwing some bucks ?
The wanted feature isn't available so, yes, you wasted 20$.

  • Save as excel in numbers 3.0?

I can't save a copy of a numbers spreadsheet as an Excel spreadsheet.  I was able to before 3.0 update.
    Anyone have this issue also?
    Help!

    Hi Melanie,
Are you trying to "save as" or are you trying to export, like this?
Numbers 2.3, part of iWork '09, is still on your Mac, in a subfolder within your Applications folder. You can run it and Numbers 3.0 at the same time if you want.

  • Excel Import - Numbers 09

I cannot properly import an Excel file. The import results in all data being placed in column 1. ( The problem is sometimes listed as a tab character, regardless of the file that is being used.) The only way that I can get to the data is to open the file in Excel - export it as a .csv file and then import the .csv file into numbers.
I can't believe that Apple did not find this bug during testing. What other spreadsheet programs are out there that business people use?
Perhaps there is a work around (other than the above)?
I'm quite disappointed to say the least.

    Thanks for your quick response.
I don't know what to say other than the problem that I had with numbers yesterday no longer applies. I can now open every .xls file with numbers that I have and they format properly. (I could also do this with the previous version so I thought that there was a problem with the 09 version.)
I still do not understand why I had the problem yesterday - the only change was a shutdown overnight.
    Thanks again,

  • I just switched from EXCEL to numbers and have a lot of problems

Problem1.  I converted an excel spread sheet to Numbers.  The excel sheet subracted two dates to determine if date 1 was earlier or equal or later than date 2.  The result was used in an IF statement to take various actions in either of the three cases.  Numbers tells me I can't compare "durations" to other data types, and I can't subtract a date from a number.  Hmmm?!  In Excel dates are numbers so this is not a problem.  How can I avoid this, or convert the duration to a number?
Problem 2.  In reading the Numbers help manuals, I can't find the operation that corresponds to "fill down" in Excel, such as when you install a formula on a column and want the same formula in each cell down below.  Numbers seems to take great pains to show me how to install various colors and styles, but not a simple formula.
    Help Please.

    Jerry,
    1. A Date is a particular data type, distinct from Numeric values. Hard to say why you are getting that message without seeing your data. I suggest this approach:
If one date is in Column A and the other date is in Column B, you could write:
    =IF(A>B, "A is later", "B is later")
There is no reason to do a subtraction unless you want to use the difference in a calculaiton.
    2. Yes, Numbers supports Fill
Write your expression in the first calculation cell. Select that cell and all the ones below it that you want to Fill to.
Choose Insert > Fill > Fill Down

  • Best for Accounting Class? Excel or Numbers '09

I'm about to take a cost accounting class and the syllabus says that we'll be using excel to do spreadsheets and to create an interactive master budget. I'm not sure if I should go for Numbers '09 (since I'm more inclined to get iWork because of Pages and Keynotes '09) or Excel (since my professor is encouraging it). I really want to give Numbers '09 a chance but I don't want to struggle in class.

The reasons for that encouragement could be a matter of preference/familiarity on the part of the professor, or could arise from the fact that the feature sets of the two applications are not the same.
If the course includes use of Excel functions and features not supported by Numbers, you'll be placing an extra learning burden on yourself to find ways to do the same task without the same tools, and sometimes you'll find it much more difficult (or not possible) to do the same task without those tools.

    Barry
