Exception state ? Kernel Panic ? Bad RAM ?

Apologies for a long post including some raw panic.log info, but i've been experiencing crashes for well over a year now despite trying many fixes/repairs detailed in here in discussions. I'm flummoxed.
Hardware test checked out fine again today, I've run disk repair and Alsoft's DiskWarrior again and again, even Archive & Installed a few times over the past 2 years and yet the crashes keep coming, sometimes 10-20 a day. I use Photoshop alot, and sometimes it seems maybe the graphics card doesn't like the work I'm asking of it
graphic card spec (factory installed): ATI Radeon 9000 Pro:

Sometimes I think it's bad RAM. I discovered today that the original Apple factoryinstalled memory sticks (512 Mb) appear to have different specs.
Their specs found via Hardware Test (unable to copy and paste so I've tried to best suss exactly what is an O and what is a zero)

I've pasted some recent panic log crash info below. It seems phrases like "Exception state" keep recurring. I'm not adept at code, so most of it is difficult to understand.

If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate!

zapping PRAM is low risk. just involves keyboard combination and patience.
when I used OS9, Zapping PRAM and Rebuilding desktop was the defacto std of every time I had a big issue I attacked.
Changing out PRAM batteries is not hard either. a new 3.6v PRAM battery is about $5 + s/h... OWC has some great ones from Newer Tech that are very nice. I always pick up a few when I can. I have the nervous bad habit of buying parts I almost never use...
Sorry you dont have the applecare option. Before I bought my Dual G4 MDD I never ever paid extra for the applecare and never gave it much thought. always did everything myself through trial and error, read links on webpages, or bought stuff OEM and did servicing myself.
The 7 days my Dual G4 MDD was in for repair was the longest 1 week of my Mac life... I was forced even to use an old Win98Se computer for email and dialy internet activities.
Of course it floored me when I saw how much AppleCare did. Part of me was like...Was this NECESSARY? wasn't there something else to do other than just swapping parts out? But I guess those Techs knew better than me. so Basically they gave me a new replacement mobo, replaced the dual processor module, and replaced the video card. would of been $1411 out of my pocket. my wife and I were convinced if I didnt have the applecare I would of probably waited a bit and got an iMac G5 later on. But I LOVE MY G4 MDD TOWER Too Much. lol.
sorry to go off topic.
As for the rest, I dont know what to tell you. I wish you the best anyway. Try and Zapping PRAM, try to Reset the PMU switch, try to swap out the PRAM battery. Thats the cheap solution I can give.
There are people here who know a lot more than I. and given a little bit of time can give you some good advice. Don't give up on it yet.
good luck dude.

  • Macbook pro late 2011 Kernel Panic: bad ram? Not really

Hi guys, I'm Experiencing random kernel panics with my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011. The kernel panics are completely random but I found a way to reproduce it with playing 2 videos in youtube simultaneously. The longest interval between kernel panics is about 20 minutes; I got sometimes 2 hours results.
Running the mac in safe mode, I can use the mac for hours and the kernel panic will not happen.
Strange thing is that the problem arise even when I load a linux live distro (ubuntu): this makes me think it's an hardware related problem.
I think my problem is related to this thread: Processor context corrupt.
I already changed the ssd and the ram (2x4 GB new Crucial modules) but kernel panic is still happening. No results even resetting PRAM and SMC.
Here's a little extract of kernel panic: as you'll see there are no third party modules loaded and applications installed.

My main concern is: could this be overheating related?
Temperature levels are affected by several things such as the type and number of applications open, the ambient temperature, how the MBP is physically positioned and occasionally by foreign matter inside the unit.  The temperatures that you describe for given circumstances are not necessarily out of line.  Here is a screenshot of a temperature monitor from my MBP as I respond to you:
This is with a very light load on the MBP resources and is less than the 50°c that you report, but there could be explanations for the differences.  The specific details would have to be examined but all told I do not view this as a matter for grave concern.
Temperatures in the 90°c+ range are not unusual when running applications such as Skype or rendering video.  Again knowing the details would be required to make a definitive statement one way or the other.
Be aware that there are thermal shutdown provisions in the MBP that will protect it from heat damage.
    Ciao.

  • Kernel Panics - bad RAM?

Recently, I will come back after leaving my MacBook unattended for an hour or so and find the "You must restart" crash screen. Upon restarting, the crash report would show a kernel panic. More recently, a variety applications will randomly crash, and their error logs will all say "KERNINVALIDADDRESS".
I figured this was a RAM issue, so I ran the full AHT, and it returned the following error code:
    4MEM/4/40000000
However, this was with a mouse, keyboard, and external LCD connected, so I ran it twice again without the peripherals. Both times, it passed with no errors. Would a USB mouse, keyboard, and a DVI monitor really screw up my RAM somehow? I don't understand what the problem could be. I am currently running without any of them attached, and so far so good...
I'm running 2GB of Corsair RAM I installed myself. It has been running since June without any problems at all. I have been using these peripherals almost continuously since August without any trouble with them either.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I think my keyboard is causing the trouble; it crashed again about an hour after reconnecting it.
What information in the crash report could help pinpoint the problem?

  • Kernel Panic; Bad Memory; Recalled Logic Board

About a year ago I had the logic board on my iMac replaced under a recall and everything went fine. Until last week. My wife goes downstairs and tries to use the computer and all the fans were running at full speed. I rebooted it and got a kernel panic. Rebooted again, and got another kernel panic. So I opened it up and moved the memory around, thinking that a stick might have gone bad or something. It seemed like it might work, at first, but then it got another kernel panic. I purchased entirely new memory and it still got a kernel panic on boot.
Currently, it is completely unusable as it kernel panics early in the boot cycle. I can get it to boot the Apple Hardware Test CD and running the test revels that the memory is bad. But it said this with the original memory that had worked for years and the brand new memory. My final thoughts are that the logic board is shot and there is no recall this time. What is the warranty on Apple replacement parts? If its 1 year then I might be able to get it replaced for free; if its 90 days then I'm screwed. I think I'm screwed.
It was running the latest OS X (10.5.6) and had been working fine. There has been no new hardware attached nor software upgraded. It just up and died one day. Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanx!
    Richard

I had my logic board replaced while under warrantee a while back on my 1.8 MHz PPC G5 iMac. Lately every time I try and work in Adobe Photo Shop Elements I get this error>
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000008
So I started looking around on my MAC and noticed that my memory now only reports that I have 1 gig of ram....I had upgraded this MAC with 2 - 1 gig rams from Crucial (Using their System Match thing to make sure I had right ram) It used to show 2 Gig in "About this Mac" Now if the problem might be a bad logic board, I am Not going to spend $600 to fix it. I have not run my test CD and am looking to find out what I need to to to find out what is wrong with my MAC. This drives me crazy. And yes this error is repeatable, on demand! Please help. Also if it is in fact a bad logic board I will be looking to replace this MAC with another. I only use this one for photography and was wondering if I can do that effectively on a Macbook or do I need to consider a MB-Pro?
    Thanks.

  • Kernel Panic and RAM issues

about a week ago I got my first ever kernel panic . This coincided with the mac completely running out of battery due to being on a holiday. Sometimes I can get on without an issue for a while until it shuts down and either tells me there is a kernel panic or it does the three beep black screen. From what I have researched its a ram issue. from memory I have 2x2gb rams installed but it may be 4gb I'm not 100% sure and I cant get on to check. I'm pretty sure its not a software issue as I have booted up on several occasions and deleted things such as Sophos. I'm out of warranty so its up to me to get this show back on the road. My questions:
If I can startup the computer and have it running for a while before it dies and says is a kernel panic, is it unlikely its a software related issue?
Is there any possible way of testing for dodgy rams without physically removing one at a time and seeing what happens?
Is there anything else it could be?
Can rams cause kernel panics, if so do the panic reports reflect this?
    cheers

Try to get your MBP functioning.  Perform SMC and PRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Kernel Panics can be caused by hardware or software issues.  When they occur, log it and post it for review:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546
RAM can be checked by downloading and running REMBER fro Kelley Computing:
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/
In order to get sufficient loops, run it overnight.
Running a MBP till the battery is exhausted is a very bad practice.

  • Final cut pro make Mac pro kernel panic with RAM from other manufacturers

    hi all
if i installed RAM For mac Pro from 667MHz DDR2 fully buffered ECC RAM from other manufacturers
final cut pro (just final cut)
make the machine kernel panic messege
all programs working good (like adobe and other compositing program) but final cut freez the machine and kernel panic
    the standard RAMs good

    Ahmed:
You can try visiting/searching the Expanding your Power Mac G5 forum. You'll find A LOT of help about RAM issues.
Any RAM brand must work but you maust be sure it follows the MAc specs. Some brand sites have good product locator by computer manufacturer/model (i.e. Kingston and Crucial). In fact there is no Apple branded RAM, they use a lot of different ones.
Inside FCP settings you'll find how to manage the memory that the program use, but that settings depends on the total quantity of memory you have installed, and you didn't post that information.

  • Erratic behaviour. Kernel Panic. RAM problem? HDD? iBook blues..

I dont know what's wrong with my iBook.
At first, safari kept on crashing. I deleted plists (Safari prefs files) and Safari ran again using new default plists... for awhile. Then it crashed and wouldnt start at all.
Then I got my first kernel panic (BSOD of OSX)
I reinstalled OSX TWICE trying to figure out if updates were causing the problem.
I also tried Apple Hardware test from my installation disc. Everyiting ok.
After that, I got a shock when my applications would not run! Safari would exit. YM crashed. MSNmsgr crashed. And then the kernel would panic (like BSOD).
I also removed RAM i recently installed.
    PC2700 256MB Kingston.
According to Apple, the iBook G4 1ghz uses PC2100 RAM but is compatible with PC2700 RAM.
I tried Apple Hardware test again from my installation disc. Everyting is fine.
But the system hanged on startup. No login screen at all.
I tried reinstall OSX. But the installer (booted from DVD) does not detect my HDD!!!
shocked, i thought that my disk had failed.
Diskutility of the installer. cannot repair the volume.
    HFS: volume okay
    Volume ... corrupt.
    So, I erased the HDD.
Rebooted and now installer recognizes the disc.
So i just reinstalled OSX for the FOURTH time.
    Now im really confused...
What could have caused the HDD to become corrupt?
Was it incompatible RAM? (but the RAM should be compatible)
or is it my HDD failing?
    I ran diskwarrior.
SMART HDD reports indicate that the disc is running normally.
I am really confused. Dont know what could be the cause of the problem.
I cannot risk my computer being unable to boot again as i use it for work. And when OSX cannot boot and I had to reinstall (note, Install and archive was not available as OS DVD was a lower version than the installed version) and all my files were gone. Luckily, i had a backup.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have been seeing is a kernel panic, since a kernel panic does not give you a blue screen.
The hard drive can be corrupted if you do a forced shutdown instead of a normal one. If you were stuck on a blue screen repeatedly, it is my assumption that you did repeated forced shutdowns. Any and every time you do one, you should repair the hard drive before continuing to work.
I don't understand why Archive and Install was not available to you. I have started over after updates with my 10.3.0 CD and used Archive and Install. There should be no problem in that regard.
The iBook G4 Discussions can be found here.

  • Mac OS Lion Kernel Panic after RAM upgrade

    Hi everyone.
Yestarday I upgraded RAM of my MBP from 4GB to 8GB. Note 4GB wasn't native, when I bought MBP it had 2GB.
Both RAM (2x2GB and 2x4GB) is Samsung.
For last day I had 3 Kernel Panic!!! Never got it BEFORE.
I run memory test and it showed that RAM is OK.

  • Time Machine causing kernel panic - bad ca_blocks (too small)

When time machine is finishing a backup, the grey curtain comes down and I must shut down computer. I have tried to repair sparsebundle but I do not receive any details to see if the bundle is corrupt. I have pasted below the kernel panic details. Any suggestions to correct time machine so I can use again for backups?

Sometimes when you repair a sparse bundle, the messages aren't shown in the center panel. Click the Logs icon in the toolbar, or select +Window > Show Log+ in the menubar.
The messages for each "run" are separated by a row of asterisks, so you can look back, too.
I have pasted below the kernel panic details. Any suggestions to correct time machine so I can use again for backups?
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x4207e0): "hfs_getnewvnode: bad ca_blocks (too small)"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.37/bsd/hfs/hfs_cnode.c:706
Bad blocks sounds like a problem with the HD. If the repair finds and fixes things, try again.
If that doesn't help, make an appointment at your local Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
or call AppleCare and report your situation.
Note that Time Capsules are warranted for one year, but if you purchased AppleCare for a Mac within 2 years of the TC, the TC is covered, too.

  • Kernel Panics - testing RAM slots

After frustrations dealing with constant kernel panics, I have gotten Apple Hardware Test to identify that one RAM slot on the G5 iMac is probably defective. Each slot carries a 500Mb chip from Crucial.
The test indicates a RAM error/defect in DIMM slot 1, but when I SWITCH the two chips, it is still DIMM slot 1 which comes up as defective.
    Questions:
Which of the two slots in the 20" G5 iMac is DIMM 1, and which is DIMM 2?
Do others agree that if the chips themselves were defective, a switch would have changed the id of the slot exhibiting the error?
If we elect to repair the DIMM slot, how much hardware must be replaced? Tests here and in the Apple repair shop consistently say the logic board is fine.
If I can identify the good slot, and put in a single 1Gb chip in that slot and leave the other empty, will things get by ok?
Thanks in advance for all the help. The OS has been cleanly reinstalled numerous times, and I've been sold a replacement HD I suspect may not have been absolutely necessary, though it is nice to have the larger capacity.
Owen in Oregon, at the end of his rope.

You are on the right track by swapping devices from one slot to the other, but you've not definitively identified a slot issue as opposed to a DIMM device issue, as you report that your devices are identical. While the evidence still points to that, it would be helpful to swap in a different type of compatible memory to pin down the issue.
If you slot is indeed defective, only the logic board need be replaced. If your machine is under warranty or an AppleCare extension to it, Apple will replace the defective logic board at no cost for either parts or labor. You can identify which is DIMM slot 1 and which is two simply by leaving one empty, restarting and again launching the System Profiler. If it panics, swap the single module to the other slot and leave the other empty, restart and again check with System Profiler. I believe that slot identifiers are screened on the board and that the right slot is slot 1, and the left, slot 2. But, I am not certain that is the case.
There may be an issue with seating modules in what appears to be defective slot, with the clips that lock them into place, with the edge connector itself or with the UL3 memory controller, if your DIMMs are not defective. There may also be material obstructing the slot in question, so examine it carefully to determine that no foreign material or debris is present.

  • Kernel panic and RAM errors

    Hi there,
I have a problem with my MacBook which I bought in April 2007. I upgraded my memory and now have 3GB, the maximum capacity my MacBook 2,1 can deal with. In last week, my computer froze entirely...but the mouse pointer was still moveable what struck me a little. Now, this morning, I had a kernel panic. I'll post the log at the end of this message. I tested my memory because of that with a linux dvd: memtest86. I have up to now 510 errors. I've already changed the memory modules and tested them separately - always errors. Now I wonder if both modules are defective or perhaps something else like perhaps the logic board or the memory controller. The really strange thing is that if I test the memory within OSX, there are no errors found.

I might have found a solution: memtest86 found on linux dvds/cds doesn't seem to be suitable for Intel Macs. There is a port for Intel Macs: http://matt.ucc.asn.au/memtest/
This program blocks the first 1.2MB, where information concerning Boot Camp are located, which cause errors in the normal memtest86. More information in the link given above.
That's why I received those much error messages. That's also why a memory test within OSX didn't show errors. The test is now running for 14mins and no error has occurred yet.
But can anyone read any information from the panic log?

  • G5 dualcore kernal panic. bad ram? bad speaker connection? both?

i've got a new G5 dual core 2.3 and i have this problem.
i've got a pair of polk pc speakers that plug into the back of this machine in the audio input (mini phono) and work fine.
when i first got the machine, i also installed a matching pair of kingston value ram 512mb chips.
if i unplugged the speakers, i got the slowly greying screen and then the 'must restart this computer' error message.
after reading many posts on this forum i thought it might be time to pull the added ram out...when the RAM was pulled out, i could plug/unplug the speakers no problems, no errors. great. problem solved? not quite.
so today i got a matching pair of samsung 512mb RAM chips and it's now doing the same thing-
i pulled the speaker out to see if it was working and i got the same error message i was getting earlier with the valueram chips.
kernal panic typically is hardware related and i thoght i figured out that it was the RAM.
can it be the board that the RAM is seated in?
can it be the I/O board?
any help would be greatly appreciated!!

"... didn't have a problem with it prior to adding any extra ram..."
Anytime your computer starts acting strange immediately after adding RAM, you can pretty much bet the computer does not "like" the RAM. Easy way to determine...pull the 3rd party RAM and see if the ish "goes away". But I still don't like the idea of "hot swapping" anything other than USB or FW connected devices.

  • Kernel Panic in 10.6.2

I've been using Snow Leopard for quite a while with no problem. About two weeks ago, I turned my June 09 15" Macbook Pro on and shortly after logging in I received a kernel panic. Restarted and got the same thing again. This happened twice until I booted into windows 7 (bootcamp) and needed to do a check disk - it took about 50 min to fix the index on the 40 Gb partition. After that it worked fine, until three days ago. It happens a couple of times in a row and then seems to work fine.
    Things I have tried:
Verify Disk (also from the install disk)
Hardware Test (but not the in-depth)
Installed Snow Leopard again (However, I did not due the clean install)
    Other stuff:
The system is up-to-date, but I also tried to make sure third party programs were updated
I only have the system hardware (no third-party memory)
    no peripherals connected
I have been unable to isolate the problem to a specific program thus far. This morning it happened a while after I woke my computer from sleep, whereas it usually happens after I boot up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would remove the preference pane. I would be sure to disable anything third-party connected to writing NTFS files.
If you haven't done this yet I suggest you try booting into safe mode and running for a while to see if the kernel panics persist. I would also make a new user account then log into the new account and use it for a while. This can help by disabling certain third-party additions that may cause a kernel panic.
If you have any cache cleaning software such as Leopard Cache Cleaner for Snow Leopard, Onyx, TinkerTool System, then you can use it to clear out all system, user, and font caches in case a corrupted cache may be causing the panics.
Don't overlook the fact that hardware failure is the most common cause of kernel panics - bad RAM, defective hard drive, bad motherboard, for example. You can test those in part by running the hardware diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

  • "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" on shutdown

For several years now, I've been happily using Arch. I'm quite a seasoned user. I've solved countless errors and problems with my systems on 3 different machines, but I don't know how to fix this one. I've searched the forum and asked google -- got no answer.
Since systemd upgrade on my Asus laptop, shutdown and reboot broke down. The other machine with Arch works fine (systemd installed), but that's a stationary computer.
I don't know what may be wrong... The system is upgraded to the full. The error displayed by kernel is as follows:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
And photo of it happening: http://i.imgur.com/kewfbYv.jpg
This happens every time I try to shut down or reboot the laptop. (I'm using the poweroff and reboot commands). I have to press the power button for a while to force poweroff. It's really annoying.
Everything works just fine except this kernel panic. I'm using catalyst drivers. Other than that - nothing "unusual".

During boot there is a problem with your fglrx driver. It tries to use MSI interrupts instead of old pin-based method, but it is allready enabled and it warns you http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.7.4/drivers/pci/msi.c#L811 in line 828
And during shutdown there is a problem with pci_msi_shutdown. Maybe this problems related with each other?
try to disable globaly msi by adding nomsi to kernel options. If this help try to disable msi just for catalyst after boot by echo 0 in /sys/bus/pci/devices/[faulty device]/msi_bus
try to raise debug level to see message dev_dbg(dev, "shutdown\n"); here http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.7.4/drivers/base/core.c#L , open an entry in bugzilla
try do upgrade or downgrade catalyst if possible
    switch to open source driver

  • Snow Leopard Freezes, Reboots, Crashes, Kernel Panics

I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, late 2008. I got it with Leopard, and I had absolutely no problems at all with it until I stupidly upgraded to Snow Leopard in September 2009. Since then my computer crashes a lot. Here is a list of problems I've had so far, most of them on seemingly random occasions:
    - Kernel Panics (happened around 2 times, both while rendering a video in Final Cut Pro)
    - Complete system freeze where the screen freezes on the last thing displayed, the last sound played keeps looping (if I'm in the middle of a Skype conversation or listening to music, for example) and nothing will react (including mouse, caps lock, eject key, the system won't even sleep when I close the lid) requiring a hard reset by holding the power button (happened at least 3 times). This has sometimes happened when all I was doing is listening to music on iTunes, I wasn't even touching the computer, and all of a sudden I just hear the last half second of music looping forever.
    - Complete freeze where the mouse would still move, but the system would reboot automatically after a few seconds (happened once or twice)
    - Reboots without any warning (happened around twice)
Basically these are my major problems, and all of these have happened in 10.6.1 and 10.6.2, except the kernel panics which have not happened (so far) since I updated to 10.6.2.
I have tried repairing permissions, it didn't change any of the above behaviours.
    This is what I noticed:
These problems happen regularly, around one or two times week.
_*The problems only seem to happen when I set my computer to use the dedicated graphics instead of the integrated graphics*_ via "System Preferences > Energy Saver > Higher Performance". If I set that setting to "Better Battery Life", then the problems don't seem to happen at all.
However, I use Photoshop and Final Cut Pro a lot, so I need to set the graphics to +Higher Performance+. Dedicated graphics is one of the reasons I bought this computer, so setting it to Better Battery Life isn't a solution for me.
As I've said before, I'm running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and my machine is a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and processor of 2.53 GHz.
I have performed an upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard, as opposed to a clean install. Trying a clean install of either Leopard or Snow Leopard will be my last resort if nothing else works, however, I am asking you whether you can think of anything else to solve my problems without having to do a clean install, as it would require lots of work and it would be a big hassle for me.
    Thank you very much.

I am having the EXACT same problem, however I have an iMac (24"display, 2.93GHz, 4GB ram.) I think I've narrowed it down to Quicktime, but can't figure out a solution. I have both Quicktime Pro (7.6.3) and the version that comes with snow leopard - Quicktime 10.0.
Here is a list of applications which have been running during a freeze, shutdown or restart.
    -iDVD
    -Quicktime 7.6.3
    -iMovie
    -Safari (only when playing video)
    -Adobe soundbooth (one time only)
I've tried everything from permissions repair to a clean SL re-install to everything in between.
    Any ideas out there??
