"Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" on shutdown

For several years now, I've been happily using Arch. I'm quite a seasoned user. I've solved countless errors and problems with my systems on 3 different machines, but I don't know how to fix this one. I've searched the forum and asked google -- got no answer.
Since systemd upgrade on my Asus laptop, shutdown and reboot broke down. The other machine with Arch works fine (systemd installed), but that's a stationary computer.
I don't know what may be wrong... The system is upgraded to the full. The error displayed by kernel is as follows:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
And photo of it happening: http://i.imgur.com/kewfbYv.jpg
This happens every time I try to shut down or reboot the laptop. (I'm using the poweroff and reboot commands). I have to press the power button for a while to force poweroff. It's really annoying.
Everything works just fine except this kernel panic. I'm using catalyst drivers. Other than that - nothing "unusual".

During boot there is a problem with your fglrx driver. It tries to use MSI interrupts instead of old pin-based method, but it is allready enabled and it warns you http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.7.4/drivers/pci/msi.c#L811 in line 828
And during shutdown there is a problem with pci_msi_shutdown. Maybe this problems related with each other?
try to disable globaly msi by adding nomsi to kernel options. If this help try to disable msi just for catalyst after boot by echo 0 in /sys/bus/pci/devices/[faulty device]/msi_bus
try to raise debug level to see message dev_dbg(dev, "shutdown\n"); here http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.7.4/drivers/base/core.c#L , open an entry in bugzilla
try do upgrade or downgrade catalyst if possible
switch to open source driver

  • Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

OK, a new issue that I can't resolve...
Having made my new kernel without any hiccups, I then installed it by using pacman -A kernel2.6.12.pkg.tar.gz. However, on boot-up it only gets so far, then gives me an error:
<0>Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I've looked around on the 'net, and it seems this usually occurs when there's some problem with the hardware. However, I've used the config file from the 2.6.10 kernel I'm currently in as I type, so there shouldn't be any problems support-wise :?
    What could be wrong?
My fstab and config for the 2.6.12 kernel are below (I've included the fstab so you can see I've got support for my filesystems compiled into the kernel):

Arch is running on an Athlon-XP 3000+, with an Audigy 2 Value sound card, ASUS NF7 mobo (nforce2), 2 IDE hdds, 1 SATA hdd, a floppy drive, 3com Boomerang ethernet PCI card, and an ATI Radeon 9800SE.
I thought that I might have enabled both APM and APCI in the kernel by accident, but that's not the case
I know, as I've mentioned earlier in the thread, that there's an issue with the emu10k1 drivers used by my audigy in this kernel, but I've compiled that as a module under ALSA, and I assume it wouldn't have an extreme effect like this even if it were statically compiled.
    Any ideas???

Problem was resolved by self; I recompiled the kernel, again using ABS... I think I may have not incorporated an I/O Scheduler into the kernel, lol. Cheers anyway.

  • Kernel Panic when i attempt to load music/videos

when i try to load any mp3s or movie files onto my ipod, i get the kernel panic screen (4 languages, hold down power blah blah blah)... what can i do to make this not happen?

I am in the same boat as you guys.
I have a 60 gig Black 5G iPod. Loaded primarily with video.
It is syncing to a 10.4.3 iMac G5.
I have been using the iPod trouble free for 2 weeks now. Syncing everyday, removing and adding video. No problems.
Last night I attempted to add a number of videos that would have filled up the device. Once I was syncing the last, or second to last, video and the counter in iTunes showed there was about a gig of space left available on the iPod I would get a Kernel Panic (grey screen, power button, 5 languages, telling me to restart).
This happened twice before I removed a handful of videos to keep the iPod from filling up. This seemed to relieve the problem and the iPod synced like normal.
Otherwise the iPod has been performing as expected, video playback is great, syncing otherwise is fine.
My panic.log is very similar to yours rdstuart

So, a follow up question, anyone reading this thread completely (and I mean completely, save for a few megs) maxed out their 5th gen iPod? 30 or 60 gig qualifies as it seems to occur on both models.
Basically I am trying to determine the root of the problem. Is this a serious hardware problem which would warrant an exchange?
Or possible a problem/flaw in the database structure of the iPod that could be rectified via a firmware update?
Has anyone talked with Apple Tech Support about this issue?
My iPod is absolutely great otherwise, none of the many complaints others in the forum have had, and so if this is just a case of leaving a gig or so free on the iPod until a fix materializes so be it! I would rather avoid an unnecessary exchange if possible.
I just want to avoid major hardware issues downs the line naturally.
Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

  • Kernel panic during downgrade attempt from Lion to Snow Leopard

    Hi guys,
I am experiencing two issues with Lion so I decided to downgrade to Snow Leopard using my Time Machine backup.
So I rebooted, held the option key down, booted from recovery disk, selected the option to select a time machine backup. I picked the latest 10.6.8 save.
Then, I waited for recovery... After completion, I noticed that I could not access my System Preferences anymore in SL. So I realised that I should have done the first steps using the option from the SL disk instead of the recovery disk.
I restarted with the SL disk in, tried to boot from the disk and got a scary kernel panic every time I tried (right when it tried to boot from the SL disk). I do not know what to do, I simply want to go back to SL backup (from my time machine) before Lion upgrade.
But, my only option to boot up is with a Lion DVD...
Any help would be greatly welecomed!
    Thanks!

Just wanted to let you all know that I figured out why I was getting the kernel panic error: I was using an old SL upgrade DVD (the very first that was available in Apple stores when SL came out) instead of the install DVD that came with my iMac.
I just tried to boot from the right DVD and it worked fine. This thread can be marked as resolved.
    Thanks!

  • MAC Mini A1176 (MA607B/A) Kernel Panic / Not Booting

    Hello,
I have a mac mini MA607B/A 1.66/2x1GB/60GB HDD, that is not booting. It Chimes and hands on the apple logo.
I searched this forum and I performed every solution I found. The mac is still doing the same thing.
I also changed the battery but no joy.
I inserted the CD that came with the MAC mini and it does exactly the same while booting from the cd.
I did a H/W check by holding the CMD+D keys and all tests were passed successfuly !!!
I booted in Verbiose mode and I have attached the log as a photo in this thread.
I really have no clue why it gives a kernel panic on CPU...
Temperature seems to be normal and the fan is working.
Any suggestions how to resolve this?

    Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.
I tried to boot in Open Firmware mode but it crashes almost imediately.
I have also Installed OSX 10.6 on an external usb hard drive of mine and tried to boot from that and it does exactly the same. I noticed that the external hard drive's light is on and binking while the computer is loading which means that it reads OS files. and after a while when the MAC freezes, the light goes completely off like there is no power supplied to it.
It does exactly the same thing even if i put the original disc that came with it and try to boot from that.
I entered Verbose mode again and now it always freezes after the "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient: Ready" line
Also the keyboard is not responding and the lighs of the keyboard are off as well.

  • Kernel Panic, not sure why

My Macbook pro (early 2011) keeps crashing. I took it to the apple store and they reseated my RAM and the panics disappeared for a while. however they came back. I took it to an authorized reseller  (no apple store near me) and they charged me $70 to tell me nothing was wrong, which i know is surely not true. I also ran apple hardware test for about 10 hours and everything came back clean. So the repair people tell me nothing is wrong with my software and everything I know says there's nothing wrong with my hardware.
I did a clean reinstall of OSX 10.9, but the mac crashed several times while installing. so I really doubt it's at all an issue to do with the software as there's relatively little software that can interfere when installing an OS.
Permisisons have been repaired and everything so I'm turning here hoping that someone can help diagnose my kernel panics.
here are two kernel panic crash logs that was sent to apple

Test the RAM by running Rember overnight so that sufficient loops are executed.  Down load it from here:
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/
    Ciao,
Take out the RAM modules, clean the contacts and reinstall them.  Make certain that they are well seated.

  • My Late 2013 Retina MBP had a Kernel Panic - not sure what the source is.

I have a recently-purchased Macbook Pro (late 2013, Retina, 13", 8GB RAM, 2.4 GB i5) that just had a kernel panic this afternoon. This is the first time I've had a kernel panic on this computer, so I don't know what the cause is. It's claiming that 'kextd' is the related process, but I don't remember having installed anything recently that would have a kernel extension attached to it. Maybe one of you might know what it's related to?
    Here's the panic report:

  • /initrd: 36: replace: not found = Kernel panic!

    Hi guys!
Some days ago I updated my Archlinux...
Pacman installs the new kernel, then reboot and... There's a wonderful Kernel Panic!
    /initrd: 36: replace: not found
    /initrd: 36: replace: not found
    export: 36: bad variable name
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

    [<c13fa70>] ? complete_and_exit+0x0/0x30
    [<c0103d54>] ? sys_call+0x7/0xb
So I tried to find a solution to the problem chrooting to my Arch partition from Ubuntu, and then I:
    1) erased the Pacman cache
    2) reinstalled klibc (I ignored some of its dependencies some days before (pacman -Syud))
    3) reinstalled kernel26
    4) gave the command mkinitcpio -p kernel26
These operations ended flawlessy but, when I rebooted my machine, there was the same Kernel Panic waiting for me, again...
    Please help me!!!!!
    Thank you for your support

    hi!
when you reinstall kernel26, it will generate initram. so it is not necessary to run mkinitcpio as a separate command. plus, i am not sure that that is the proper mkinitcpio command in your case. the chrooted environment probably has other kernel than for what you want the initrd generated. than the syntax is different for mkinitcpio. you can check proper options for it on wiki, or watch it on screen while installing kernel26 in chroot. so in this case with the 4th step of yours you might generate an improper initrd overwriting the proper one.

I got the kernel panic with larch5.3 building CD. I didn't get any error messages during the creating. The error message of starting system is in belowing words.

Hi gradgrind, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have added aufs, eject packages. But it seems still cannot work. Sorry for many troubles.
One think. When I create the iso file, it gives a warning message.

  • Oracle Linux 6 kernel panic boot !!!!

I'm running Oracle Linux 6.3 on a VMware machine which based on a HP Proliant BL620c G7 server.
I've installed IBM Websphere version 8.5 and IBM HTTP Server version 8.5.
After installing VMware tools for this machine, I was asked to reboot the server, but on start we got a kernel panic such as below:

Could anyone give me a pointer as to what is or even could be causing this? I'm completely stumped at this point
    Thanks,

It looks like the system has trouble opening or finding the /boot volume. I don't think it is an incompatibility with your hardware. You might however want to make sure you installed a recent VMware version and have correct settings to support x64 guest OS. I'm not using VMware anymore, but under VirtualBox such issue can be due to missing I/O apic and VT-x support in the BIOS.

  • Kernel panic (solved) -- VIA chip M/Board

I am using a custom kernel but once in awhile I tried getting the official kernel (2.6.18.x) to work with mkinitcpio but no success. I tried all hints posted in forum related to "kernel panic". The error was always same:
    EIP:[<c024b42d>] acpi_hw_level_read +0x7/0Na SS:ESP 0068:c14a1f58
<0> Kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init!
When having the same error with Kubuntu's live CD (2.6.17-10) I concluded the problem is in M/Board. Earlier in the forum (read below) was mentioned Linux doesn't support properly VIA based chipset. I changed to Intel 815E. Now the booting works fine with deafult mkinitcpio setting. Also sound is working, which didn't do with VIA chipset in Arch (but in Kubuntu).
    iphitus wrote:
You made the terrible mistake of getting a Via based chipset. When buying my computer, Con Kolivas advised that I stay away from them like the plague as under linux, and in general, you get a lot of unusual problems like what you have mentioned.
Ended up with an intel chipset which runs perrrrfectly.

    let's see :
Via KT266A on Asus mobo with athlon XP 1800 approx a year
VIA KT444 (i think) on AOpen Mobo with athlon xp 2600 - 5 months
    VIA KT800 on Asus S939 Mobo with Athlon 64 - 3 months
All 3 systems are running archlinux (lastest version) without any problems
Note : all 3 systems use the via82cxxx module

  • Arch 0.7, 2.6.17-mm6 and kernel panic

Today I have built a new kernel (2.6.17-mm6), and I got "Kernel panic" - the message I haven't seen for a long, long time.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 152k freed
Time: tsc clocksource has been installed.
    argc == 3
    argv[0]: "/init"
    argv[1]: "root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2"
    argv[2]: "ro"
    Running ipconfig
    kinit: do_mounts
    kinit: name_to_dev_t(/dev/discs/disc0/part2) = dev(0,0)
    kinit: root_dev = dev(0,0)
kinit: failed to identify filesystem /dev/root, trying all
kinit: Cannot open root device dev(0,0)
    Checking init: /sbin/init
    Checking init: /bin/init
    Checking init: /etc/init
    Checking init: /bin/sh
    kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I'm not a GNU/Linux newbie, but I'm not also a kernel guru. I think, that the problem is that the kernel can't mount the / filesystem. BUT I have compiled reiserfs into the kernel. And I really don't know, why I'm getting this "Kernel panic" message.
I'm running the old Arch 0.7.
    Does anyone has any idea?
All right, I've fixed it. The problem was in Grub configuration. Before installing 2.6.17 I had used 2.6.11, and my config in /boot/grub/menu.lst was as follows:
    title Arch Linux [2.6.11-pp2]
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /linux-2.6.11-pp2-c13 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2 ro
Therefore, when I installed 2.6.17, I added the following lines to this file:
    title Arch Linux [2.6.17-beyond2.2]
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /linux-2.6.17-beyond2.2-c15 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2 ro
After I changed the "root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2" to "root=/dev/hda2", the kernel booted without any problems.
I'm happy, that I managed to fix my problem for myself, and that I have gained more experience with Linux kernel.
However, I would have been more happy, if I understood, why "root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2" didn't work in the case of 2.6.17 kernel, while the same thing works well in the case of 2.6.11.

Because the /dev/discs/discx... syntax is a remnant of the "old" devfsd days... udev prolly understands only the /dev/hdx or /dev/sdx naming scheme.

  • Kernel panic when using kernel26.img

I'm such a beginner on this type of thing that I don't even know what I need to post here to help debug this.
Anyway I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.17.8-1 this morning.  As the upgrade process suggested I tried changing from initrd26.img to kernel26.img, but when I try to boot I get the following error and hang:
    Loading Initramfs
export 25: i8042.dumbkbd bad variable name
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
    My menu.list contains this:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=795 i8042.dumbkbd
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
I have to add i8042.dumbkbd to avoid a problem with my Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite when I boot.  Basically, the problem is that when I boot without i8042.dumbkbd the keyboard doesn't work.  Nothing I type appears, I can't even do ctrl-alt-delete to reboot.  Using i8042.dumbkbd solves this problem although my keyboard lights (Caps lock, etc) no longer work.
What else do I need to add to this post to help resolve?

arkanoid wrote:maybe there's something with hardware detection, maybe try using mkinitcpio with less options like said in the wiki above ?
No, I already stated the issue:
phrakture wrote:I see the issue... the problem is the '.' in the param name.  i didn't account for that in mkinitcpio (poor choice on my part).
Sorry for not updating - I updated the release but didn't rebuild the package in [current].  I will do that right now.

  • Fresh install produces kernel panic

    Oh boyz,
I really don't know where to continue....
Several days I goofed around, I really hope somebody can help me
    further. OK, here's my story...
I run a fine ARCH on a laptop, I joined half a year ago. I started with
a 2.4 kernel, and then got updated until the recent 2.6.19 now. At that
point, let me say BIG THX to you arch guys. You are really doing a fine
work. I hope I can give something back to the community some day.
Some days ago I purchased a second laptop, a Siemens 1,8 Celeron with
    a 40GB disc. So, it's not a very exotic thing, it's simply a (kinda
    old) working horse.
I took my 0.7 floppies and started a floppy-ftp install. So far so good.
Everything went well, internet connection and so on until....... I
    rebooted the "new" :-) system.
BTW: The configuration is not very exciting.... no extra partioning, no
special hardware. So I stepped through the installation guide and tried
to figure out via the search function of the forum what went wrong.
Believe it or not, I am trying for several days to get the machine
running. I CAN'T GET RID OF THAT:
    hda: cache flushes supported
    hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
    hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM drive...

kinit: Cannot open root device hda3(3,3)
    kinit: init not found
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
OK, what did I try ? At first (of course) to append the
earlymodules=pixx in the menu.lst of GRUB. No effect.
Then renaming the devices in fstab and menu.lst from hdax to sdx. No
effect. Hm. Installing a 2.4 kernel failed, it could not be found by
the installer. BTW, the "i8042.panicblink=0" is a fine thing to get rid
of the "Spurious Ack" message, which covers the original error messages
    very quickly.
So... can somebody help me of give me a hint ?
What I suppose....I think that the installation procedure using the
available floppy images is not enough for installing the recent
kernel, it needs some manual tuning. But which ?
Maybe its a good idea to append some configuration infos:
    (menu.lst)
    title ARCH
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda3 i8042.panicblink=0 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
    (fstab)
    none /dev/pts devpts default 0 0

    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cd iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0

    /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
    /dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
    (rc.conf)
    LOCALE stuff...
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    MOD_BLACKLIST=()
    MODULES=(floppy)
    USELVM="no"
    ...network stuff...
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)
    Ideas ?

try with the fallback img, see what you get...

  • Kernel panic - almost for sure after kernel update

I recall making some update yesterday that included some package involving something related with the lernel.
Today, i cannot boot my system, and it freezes with a kernel panic message.
The last lines says something like this:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Pid 1, comm: init Not tainted 2.6.33-ARCH #1
