Excessive CPU usage by DirectoryService

My black MacBook (2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) fans are always on and it drives us mad. The culprit is the DirectoryService demon owned by root which is always running at about 60% CPU.
I have written a loop script which kills it off every 4 four seconds but it's not much of a solution as it seems it is quite important!
Two support calls to Apple have not resolved the issue unfortunately. They claim they know nothing about it and didn't even indicate to me what this demon is used for. I had to search the Internet for information.
Does anyone have any ideas why it is using so much CPU and how to tame it? I have tried restarting, deleting the /var/db/DirectoryService and /Library/DirectoryService directories and rebooting but to no avail. It doesn't matter what user logs in or if no user logs in at all! In Safe Boot it doesn't happen though.

Here is some info on troubleshooting it, but I would just go do an Archive and Install to save time.

  • 10.9.4 excessive CPU usage

    And now a strange case...
Installed 10.9.4 but it became unusable because of excessive CPU usage. Reverted back to 10.9.3 but now the problem persists!
Basically, if connect the Ethernet cable the CPU increases and temp raises from 45C to 95C. As soon as I remove the Ethernet cable and stay on WiFi things go back to normal. I already have done the most obvious, i.e. reinstalling the OS from time machine, removing launch daemons and plug-ins, and fixing disk permissions. Check the details below. Any idea? It would be much appreciated. I'm getting nuts with this.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Mountain Lion Mail excessive CPU usage

Evers since upgrading to ML 10.8 and 10.8.1, Mail heats the CPU up to 100% after a couple of minutes and remains like this forever. Absolutely reproducible. Mail is unusable for me.
I have some 25.000 Mails in my Inbox. Sampling Mail  always reveals the same pattern. Looks like Mail is constantly iterating over my 25.000 emails and tries to layout them. Looks crazy to me.

    This problem was solved.
After a lot of frustration (restoring Lion backup and performing the update several times), I managed to have a stable installation without the problem of high CPU usage and high temperatures.
It seems that the installation procedure has an issue, when your user directories are located in an external disk. In this particular case, after the installation of the server software, the two links in /Network/Servers directory, pointing to the / directory, do not get created, so you need to do that manually.
That, in itself, was not causing my excessive CPU usage, but it didn't allow my users to log in the server. Thinking that this was the issue described in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2938, I was running the command described in the previous link to fix the issue. That command (sso_util configure -r REALM_NAME -a diradmin afp) was what was killing my CPU.
All is well, when it ends well, I guess.

  • Flash: excessive CPU usage

I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.7 and latest version of flash 10,0,32,18, and I notice that CPU usage is really excessive for pretty much any page that has even a small flash content embedded in Firefox 3.5.1. Just having for example a paused flash video uses 16% CPU constantly, and playing the video spikes the CPU usage from 56 to 76%.
And this is on dual Xeon, 2.8 GHz, 8 core Mac Pro with nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB video card, and 32 GB of RAM. I can only imagine how really frustrated users on notebooks must be.
I think flash is really reaching the tipping point where it is becoming unusable and it is really time to start looking into sane alternatives.

I do agree.  Though, to be fair, people use the software that Adobe creates to create their own software that runs in the flash player.  The player can be as well written as it is possible to be, and still have this type of problem if independent developers write poor software.  This is not in Adobe's control.
My note is that it is a known bug for player 10 to be excessively wasteful on the Mac platform, regardless of how well the program running is programmed.  This is a bug that they are currently working on fixing, to all publicly facing knowledge.
The only way to truly get rid of this is to get the developers out there in the world educated in good programming habits. Actionscript 3 has done a lot in terms of pushing the community towards that goal, but bad practices are still extant.  People don't remove event listeners when they are finished with them.  People don't set variables to null for garbage collection.  Both of these are probably the biggest problems, leaving things in memory that you aren't even using anymore.  And there is nothing Adobe can do about it except attempt to educate the masses.

  • Xorg-server 1.9 excessive CPU usage through a 32-bit chroot - bug?

Xorg goes crazy tapping my cpu usage when I compile in a 32-bit chroot.  >60 % of the total CPU is going to Xorg rather than to gcc (running Gnome if that matters).  The htop screenshot below shows X and gdm using it.  I know that if I start gnome from init 3 without gdm the same problem occurs except htop just shows X as the culprit.

Further, packages fail to build when I run makepkg through X.  If I run it when I'm in init 3 without X at all the very same package successfully builds.  If I leave myself logged into Gnome and open tty1 and enter the chroot there, it builds.
Any thoughts why?  That has to be a bug in Xorg given the conditions I explained above.  Does anyone have an idea as to preventing this?
    I entered the 32-bit chroot via: linux32 chroot /opt/arch32 /bin/bash

  • EXCESSIVE CPU USAGE IN FF 4.0

I have Windows XP, 1 GB RAM and over 10 GB free disk space. When I listen to streaming audio from a radio station, the CPU usage jumps to between 95 and 100%, the entire machine slows down tremendously.

    Hi,
I'm using the Tree Style Tab and love it.
However, I was wondering if there's a way to collapse/expand the tab sidebar using a keyboard shortcut.
    Ideas, anyone?

  • Yosemite and Mail massive memory leak and excessive CPU usage

I've just installed Yosemite and upgraded to 10.10.2 via the AppStore. Now I have a problem with Mail sucking up all the CPU (>106% !) and memory (>8Gb and rising while doing nothing). Everything runs fine when I quit Mail. Very disturbing behaviour!
I've tried several suggestions found elsewhere on the board here, such as turning off and even removing all Mail plug-ins including SpamSieve, but without positive results. I've tried un-selecting 'Store draft msgs on server', as well as the option for junk and sent msgs. but again without any difference. Going Offline within Mail also makes no difference to its memory hogging or CPU usage.
I notice this is an issue that's been around since last year (wish I'd known that before upgrading to Yosemite today) and I am just completely flabbergasted that it still exists. Would've thought Apple'd have fixed it in the first but certainly in the second incremental OSX Yosemite release.
Is there anything else I could try that's proven to be effective in stopping Mail's massive memory leak?

Okay, I've run Disk Util and restarted. Seems to have made a little bit of a difference to the RAM gobbling in that it appears to be going at a slower rate, but it's still up at around the 45Gb after an hour. Here's the EtreCheck report in the hope that it helps.

  • Excess CPU usage

    Hello:
Whenever i turn on my computer , my cpu use goes up to 100% and it stays there fluctuating to no less than 70%, the thing is i have no apps running. I unplugged my lan cabel and restarted , and voila the cpu usage got back to normal fluctuating between 5% and 0% , but everytime i plug the cable it goes up again. What could be happening? IS my mac infected? I ran Norton and it found a trojan in my windows partition , i deleted the file. but the problem still continues.
Another thing, Adium cant connect to msn and im the only mac user i know thats having this problem. I think its related.
    Any tips would be aweosme!

For the OSX side, get familiar with the +Activity Monitor+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
It will tell you what's using CPU and memory, plus disk and network stats.
Start by selecting either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sorting the list by the highest +% CPU.+
And, it has pretty good Help.

  • MacPro and Excessive CPU usage

Still trying to figure out what is happening to my 2.66 MP.
At least once a day, for no apparent reason, the first core will all of a sudden go to 100% usage and despite what I close, it stays there. I close every app and even log out and log back in and it doesn't change. If I restart, the problem is gone.
I did run Migration Assistant from my old QS G4.
I am running 10.4.8 with 3 Ghz of RAM. I ran AHT and the system and RAM checks out fine. Even ran the new Universal Applejack. Problem still remains. It is so intermittent it is going to be impossible to troubleshoot. When it started today, I was noticed it after I started iTunes in that the audio would break-up. Any clues?

  • Slowness and excessive CPU usage under 10.9.1

    Hi,
I installed Mavericks on my MacBook soon after it came out and I generally like it. However, it has made my mid-2010 model MacBook quite slow, but, oddly, only in certain situations, for example opening and quiting applications and switching between windows. The Finder has become especially slow. I'm constantly restarting and repairing disk permissions in a vain effort to make my laptop work like it used to, but it still seems almost like the computer is having to use too much virtual memory. However, activity monitor reports low 'memory pressure' (whatever that means) and generally 0 bytes or a low level of swap used. In addition, it seems to be taking longer to start up, especially after it has got past the grey apple screen and loaded up the desktop (I have to wait forever for the dock and desktop icons to appear). It has 8GB RAM and an SSD, so it shouldn't really be slow...
Activity Monitor does report very high levels of CPU utilization (often in excess of 100%). Is it just that the 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor is a little weedy for 10.9 or is this irregular behaviour? Any ideas on what i could try to speed this thing up?
Thanks in advance for any help,
    LSRW

    Hi Dibenkorn,
Thanks for your help. The SMART status is verified and the disk verification finished with a green 'okay' message. I have run etrecheck and the results are below. I will now attempt to reset SMC.

  • Use of titles causes excessive CPU usage

I have been working on a project in PP CC (all latest updates installed) for the past week.  I have had no problems regardless of the increase in size of the project over time.  Yesterday I began adding a few titles.  After I added the titles the application slowed down considerably.  It pushed one of the CPU cores to near 100% and never came down.  I restarted the application twice and the same thing happened.  It was always fine until I began working with titles.  Today, I had been working for about 3 hours and the same thing happened though I had done nothing with titling.

Thanks, Ann.  I did try that as well as loading up a different project without titles and they both worked fine.  I did discover more about the problem this morning.  It only seems to happen when I have the play head over a piece of crawling text on the timeline.  After a period of time at least one CPU core hits 100%, sometimes two, and everything slows down.  If I move the play head off to a position on the timeline without the text, the problem goes away after a few seconds.  I am able to repeat this though the amount of time it takes to occur varies from a few minutes to half an hour.  So, it seems that the work-around for the problem is to not leave the play head sitting over an instance of crawling text for any length of time.

  • Garageband 09 excessive CPU usage

    Seemingly since Snow Leopard; or perhaps the last 10.6.2 update; I can't open garageband; and when it does open; it spikes super high in CPU from 60 to 100 ;
I tried a PRAM reset; no luck yet. Whats up with this? Any others have this prob?

yes, it might be a conflict, let's hope not because that's something you'll need to dig to find. but we do have a generic OddBall probs fix:
first two things to try for “oddball” probs:

  • Excessive CPU usage?

Safari 6 under 10.8 is using the CPU even when it is in the swapped out. Activity monitor shows 100% CPU for Safari. Then it hangs when trying to quit. I have to Force Quit. Anybody else experience this or know what is going on?

Turning Java off seems to cure the problem. Javascript seems to be okay.

  • Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.

    Hello there forums.
Ever since the installation of Arch I've had the strange problem of having my Xorg process randomly (but quite frequently) spike up to 100% or somewhere within those reaches. This renders the computer totally unusable (think alsa-mixer lagging like crazy) for an average of two seconds, repeating a couple of times over the next minutes, whereafter it generally gives me a break.

Additionally I don't believe that my desktop uses the grapd-card at all (even though I've got RenderAccel) since algorithmic screensavers like the coral reef that comes with xscreensaver lags when it starts to fill up the entire screen.

The main problems I see is that my ACPI doesn't seem to kick in and that my synaptics touchpad doesn't work properly (but that's a problem for a different thread).

  • Excessive CPU usage due to SharePoint 2010 recompiling core .ascx files continuously

I am having an issue with a SharePoint 2010 farm which in the past few days is suffering from severe performance issues.
    Looking deeper, it started with Application Pools restarting every couple of minutes due to the following reason;
"Shutdown Reason: Recompilation limit of 15 reached  HostingEnvironment initiated shutdown  HostingEnvironment caused shutdown"
After changing numRecompilesBeforeAppRestart in web.config (the global one under .NET config) to a high value, the pools now restart every 10 minutes or so.
Leading on from this, the question is what is recompiling to trigger this event (the default of 15 is not an issue on any other farm I look after), so doing a sysinternals procmon on csc.exe (the compiler that keeps appearing all the time) it appears various
ascx files are being recompiled continuously, I suspect for every request.
I would expect the compilation to take place once, each time the page is visited / pool is warmed up, but this compiling is continuous, until the compilation limit is reached and the pool dies. As each request is getting a compile it also means they are
v slow (30 secs plus) or timing out. Files being recompiled include; MySiteTopNavigation.ascx, PublishingConsole.ascx, LookupFieldEditor.ascx, WorkflowStatus.ascx - all core SP files.
Any ideas on why this runaway behaviour may be taking place?

All fixed - antivirus exclusions hadn't been applied to the host, so the compiled files were being interfered with. Exclusion added environment settled a few minutes later!
