.exe default program issues

I had an issue with all .exe opening in Notepad
found this 'fix':
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
In right-side pane, change value of Default key to exefile
5. Now go to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
In right-side pane, change value of Default key to:
"%1" %*
But it has now messed up everything, so I cannot even open regedit or any application, manage to get some apps working but manually telling it which app to use, but looking for a fix for this please using Windows 8.1
When I look at any .exe it next to the file type it shows "%1" %*

Nope, but I have the answer to my own question using the following link:

A window pops up and says firefox.exe. what program would u like to use to open It shows me mozilla and I click on it. Then says do u want to run file and save.Browser opens tabs com up with search bar but the page is white blank. I have to go to the search bar and enter what wbsite i want to go to . Then I can pretty much go anywhere. What should I do? should I uninstall everything? can I still get back a older version like 3.6? How can I go about this.

  • Wine + KDE -- default program for .exe on upgrade

I find that every time I pacman -Syu, WINE gets set as the default program for opening windows .exe files.
Since I'm a sysadmin for several mail servers, I occasionally have to open suspicious e-mails and see what they are, including examining the attachments. I'm worried that one day I'll accidentally double-click one of the .exe ones and that wine will run it.
I'm sure WINE doesn't have the level of windows compatibility required for spyware & viruses to do much, but it still makes me nervous.
I always go into the KDE settings and remove this file association as soon as I notice it, but I'm wondering if there's any way to make it stay permanently gone?
Is this something the package maintainer for WINE and/or KDE has any control over, or is this the wrong place to complain about it?
    ~Felix.

kensai wrote:Well, I am the wine package maintainer, so email me your suggestions and I will discuss with other developers. Thanks.
Oh, cool. Anyway, I think I figured out a way to fix it -- just remove this line from usr/share/applications/wine.desktop in the wine package:
    MimeType=application/x-ms-dos-executable;application/x-msdos-program;application/x-msdownload;
That'll stop KDE (and probably everything else that uses /usr/share/applications as its mime provider database) from automatically associating it.
I know the .desktop file will then be technically incorrect by not listing WINE as being a handler for any mime types, but this way users will have to set it up manually if they want the ability to run strange programs by accident ;)
You could also add a message about it to the pacman install, something like
==> by default, WINE is not associated with Windows executables for safety reasons.
If you want to run ANY Windows executable by just double-clicking it (NOT recommended),
you'll have to do this as root:
    echo "MimeType=application/x-ms-dos-executable;application/x-msdos-program;application/x-msdownload;" >> /usr/share/applications/wine.desktop

  • Issues with default program.

I installed aSSD in my MacBookPro 13" and copied all of my files from my old hard drive to it and now all of my default programs are reseted.
I can't open DMG files now it just asks me what program I want to open it with. same with PKG files.
I tried to set DiskImageMounter as default application but it resets on system restart :/

Select one of the .dmg files. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel select the desired default application the click on the Change All button. Repeat this for .pkg files or any other extensions for which you want to set a default application.
I also suggest you reset the LaunchServices database before the above:
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder.  At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
    find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
Press RETURN.  Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.

  • Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Office 2013 Program Issues

After 8.1 Windows and Malicious software updates installed, I cannot open my MS Office 2013 programs without the Error with shortcut coming up and "The item Outlook.exe that the shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so the shortcut will no longer
work properly.  Do you want to delete it?"  Also when just clicking on a file, a window comes up to ask how do I want to open this file (see below).  I didn't do anything.  The PC just did updates upon shut down last night.
System restore didn't fix issue either.  Please help.

It sounds as though the executable (.exe) files are configured to open with notepad. Unfortunately you cannot manage .exe association with a launched application from the Default Programs Control Panel applet. You will need to reset the configuration of
the .exe association within the registry. The default configuration is:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
    @="exefile"
    "Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler]
    @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"
I have exported these keys to a .reg file which you can download and merge on your system to replace the corrupted keys,
    the link is here.
Disclaimer: As editing the registry can produce an unstable system or even prevent the system from booting, it is only recommended for advanced users comfortable with the ramifications. It is recommended to
back up any keys that might be edited and to have a
    recovery environment available.

  • "Open with" or "choose default program ..." Context menu broken.

    Hi,
I have what appears to be a Context menu handler issue with my Windows 7 Home Premium - 64Bit.
I just discovered that if I right-click a file ( .txt , .avi , etc), and attempt to use "Open With", I do get a previously used list of programs to select from in the drop down list that appears. However, if I then select the "choose default program ..." dialog box, to find an alternative program to use, I keep ending up with the error message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel ."
I tried re-booting without success. Looked at system restore and (STUPIDLY), I only had 2 very recent restore points to go back to, (I've since increased the restore storage allowance for the drives). Restore doesn't take me back to a usable state for this issue.
The default file types doesn't seem to be the problem, as all my files do have default programs associated with them. I can even select one of the alternatives from the right-click pop-up option menu, and the file open appropriately. I can also open and use the Default Program application via Control Panel.
The error message comes up as soon as I click on "choose default program...", from the bottom of the pop-up menu. It's as though that dialog isn't associated with the "Open with'' application anymore.
When I can get to the "Open with" application through other means, ..... the "Always use...." is greyed out, so it becomes a permanent selection / rather than temporary. I know I can sort a work-around out to re-select a default program, in a round-about way, ... but I'd just love to sort whatever has gone wrong with the right click context menu.
Whilst browsing around, I came accross this (but for Windows XP):
Clicking the "Open With" or "Choose Program..." option always opens the file with Notepad?
Note the second suggested error message. It's almost exactly what I'm getting in Win 7.
XP: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
Win 7 (my error message): "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs controll panel."
Might I be on the right track, by any chance? Could this Registry key have become corrupted? Here's what I found...........
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command
Then double clicked default, and here is the value data for (Default):
    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
If it's not this key, then I feel sure it's a Context menu handler that's become corrupted, for "Open with'' somewhere. I'm hoping someone might point me in the right direction. I'm reasonably confident in backing up / exporting and saving Registry keys - just not knowledgeable enough to know where to root around and know what should or shouldn't be there.
Apologies if this ends up in the wrong forum.
    Any help much appreciated thanks.

I had the same issue and the problem was one missing registry key:

    The default value is

  • How do you set up captivate 7 as a default program in windows 7

having trouble opening .cptx files with Captivate 7. Need to know how to get Captivate to be reconized as the default programs for .cptx files.

    Hi,
ideally, you should be able to do this on Windows 7 from
    1. Start > Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a File Type or protocol with Program.
    2. Then scroll and select .CPTX and click Change Program an click Browse.
    3. Navigate to Adobe Captivate folder at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 7\
    4. Select "AdobeCaptivate.exe" and click open.
    5. Now click Ok and check if you see AdobeCaptivate.exe under "Current Default" column on the Set Associations window.
In case it still does not works, can you please confirm at which of the above steps are you facing an issue.

  • Photoshop - open with: choose default program

    Hello,
How do I choose Photoshop as the Default Program to open .jpgs if the program doesn't appear in the "Choose Program you want to use to open this file:"? the
Also, I've Browsed in order to Choose the Default program but when I go to:  Program Files>Adobe>Adobe Photoshop CC 2014>Photoshop.exe and choose this program the Windows Photo Viewer is automatically chosen and Photoshop doesn't EVER appear in my choose of Default programs.
This wasn't an issue with an older version of Photoshop.
    Help!
    Lonnie

Sounds more like a Windows issue than Photoshop.  Can you test the Open with tool with other file types and programs?
I'm also surprised that Photoshop does not appear in the main list, and that you have to hunt for it with Browse.  Have you tried navigating to the same .exe file in Explorer and making sure it launches Photoshop.

  • Photoshop 64/Extended not a default program option

Windows 7. Since installation of CS5, the usual graphics files (gif, jpg, tif, even  psd) are associated with either Windows Picture Viewer or Picture Viewer  rather than with Photoshop. I cannot open them in Photoshop through  Windows Explorer right click Open With. Most interestingly, when I try  to change this through the Control Panel  default program associations, the Photoshop.exe selection doesn't then appear in the list of Other Programs, nor does it stick for that one instance. I have tried selecting Photoshop through both Program Files and Program Files (x64). Other Adobe products, for whatever it's worth, do appear as options. Thanks in advance.

I have this same issue - when browsing in Windows Explorer, choose a jpg, rightclick and choose properties. Click Change next to Opens With: and Photoshop CS6 does not show up either in Recommended or Other Programs. Click Browse... and navigate to Photoshop.exe. Click Open and browse window closes and Windows Photo Viewer is now selected. Photoshop does not appear. No error messages. No previous versions installed. Tiffs work fine.
    Thanks!

  • Office Upgrade Default Programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)

    Hello,
after upgrading from Office 2003 to Office 2013, users get the dialog for setting a default program.
For example: If the user is staring excel first time, a dialog appears that not default program for spreedsheats is set and if excel schould be set as default program.
How we can achieve that this is done within the installation (in OCT) or silent through a command line.
I know that the default programs can be set in the control panel via GUI, but this not a acceptable way.

    Hi,
Thanks for the confirmation. Have you ever tried to repair your Office installation? It will reassociate Office applications with related files.
You can use /repair [ProductID] command line to repair your installation.
Or you can use /unregserver and /register switches to re-register the applications, this will rewrite all the registry keys and fix the associating issue.
    For example:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\winword.exe" /unregserver
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\winword.exe" /regserver
Note: You may need to adjust the path to the .exe file to match your installation. Verify the path before running the command.
    Hope this helps.

  • Indesign CC + Windows - can't change default program

I have upgraded to CC.  I have set all default programs to open the various file types except Windows will NOT let me set InDesign as the default for opening indd files.
I can open indd files from within InDesign no dramas, but just cannot associate the program with the file type.
    I've tried two methods:
    1.   After choosing 'open with' I can browse to, and select InDesign to open the program (see below), but then nothing happens and it InDesign is not added to the list of programs I can choose from.
    2.  I have tried going through control panel + "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" - same thing happens I can select .indd and browse to InDesign but wont let me actually set that program to open this file type.

    I'm having the same issue.
I did not uninstall a previous version after installing CC, and CC was the most recent version of InDesign I installed (and I believe there's been at least 2 InDesign CC updates that I've installed since the initial installation).
I've browsed to the InDesign exe, as sc_rpa did in #1 above, and it never gets added to the application list.
I've tried going through the control panel, same thing.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign (several times, now)... and just can't get it to work. For some reason, it's as if Windows thinks InDesign.exe is not a true executable/application.
It's really affecting convenience and efficiency for me, not being able to open my .indd files directly from the file manager.
Has anybody figured this out, yet?
I'm on the 64-bit Windows 7, if that might make a difference.

I am working on windows 7 and I found that "notepad" was set as the default program for opening my .bat files. when I try to execute the batch file by double clicking, it is opened by notepad.
I have tried setting cmd.exe as the default program, it just opens the command prompt.
What is the default program I should set for executing .bat files?
I hav also tried using assoc .bat = batfile. The batch file runs fine from command prompt.

  • How to add  acrobat to windows 7 home pro default programs list

I have lost the ability to set Acrobat as the default program for opening pdf files.  I can do it with manual "open with", however I cannot set it as the default to do it automatically through any of the windows options.  I found that Acrobat is not listed as one of the windows default rpgrams and would like to be able to add to that list.  Does anyone know how to do that?  I assume it requires a registry change but I don't know where.
    Thanks for your help
    Jerry

The last item about PDF Maker files missing is another matter altogether. You really need to indicate what version of OFFICE you are using (usually where PDF Maker is used). With AA9, you can only use PDF Maker with OFFICE 2007 or earlier. AA9 is not compatible with OFFICE 2010. So adequate information is needed to give an answer. I suspect that you may have OFFICE 2010 or are using a 64-bit version of OFFICE that is also a compatibility issue for PDF Maker unless you upgrade to AA X.
The last screen Rufus shows is not available in Win7. They moved that functionality to the Control Panel as I indicated in an earlier post. But you would in a similar manner go to the set Associations and see a long list of file types. You would select the PDF type and then edit the association. You would select Acrobat.exe and not AcroRd32.exe as your default association for PDF files. Reinstalling Reader just messes things up and should generally not even be installed when you have AA9. AA X is the first version that really has allowed both Acrobat and Reader due to some compatibility issues. Usually it is best to just stay with Acrobat and not have Reader on your system. If you do uninstall Reader, you will likely have to do a Repair to Acrobat.

-Checked the registry key  ( root , local machine and users ) they are pointing to the outlook.exe
I'm kind off at a loss here , why am i not seeing outlook in the default program , i do see chrome and the mailto protocol is ticked on here but grayed out ...

-Checked the default programs ( only chrome shows up in here )
By this, do you mean when we go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations, the Current Default column shows Chrome for the mailto URL?
If we click the Change Program button, can you change it to Outlook?
In addition, we may also try to change the default browser to Internet Explorer and then test the issue again.

  • Getting this error while opening a folder : This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel

    Hi,
While trying to open a folder on my Windows 7 Home Premium, an error comes "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action.  Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I tried searching on the net but did not get great support for the issue when it happens with folder opening.

    Hi Nikunj Shah,
    First, I suggest you download
    Microsoft Safety Scanner or
Malicious Software Removal Tool to run a full scan.
The error messages here seems to be caused by the corrupted registries, which related with the folder association.
You may take a try to merge the following registry settings to reset the folder association, before that, remember to backup your registry settings first:
