Executing a file within java

Hey,
I have what seems like a simple problem. I want to write code that executes a jar file. For example I want a to write a class that executes a executable jar file. I have created the jar file called 1.jar and now I want to execute it in the code of another java program Can anyone help me accomplish this with an example. I have tried using exec and its not working right here is some of my code
     public void runFile()throws Exception
          Runtime.getRuntime().exec(". 1.jar");
it comes up with the error
Exception in thread "main" java.io.IOException: CreateProcess: . 1.jar
error=2
at java.lang.Win32Process.create(Native Method)
PLEASE HELP.
thanks

Your awesome thanks,
That worked, however I have one more question for you. Will this run on machines that are just using Java runtime environment?
basically will this work on any machine with java installed?

    See java.lang.Runtime and java.lang.Process classes.

    And if you search this site you can probably find a ton of examples.
    Keep in mind that using this can limit portablilty of your Java application.

  • Executing batch file from Java stored procedure hang

    Dears,
    I'm using the following code to execute batch file from Java Stored procedure, which is working fine from Java IDE JDeveloper 10.1.3.4.
    public static String runFile(String drive)
    String result = "";
    String content = "echo off\n" + "vol " + drive + ": | find /i \"Serial Number is\"";
    try {
    File directory = new File(drive + ":");
    File file = File.createTempFile("bb1", ".bat", directory);
    file.deleteOnExit();
    FileWriter fw = new java.io.FileWriter(file);
    fw.write(content);
    fw.close();
    // The next line is the command causing the problem
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /c " + file.getPath());
    BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    String line;
    while ((line = input.readLine()) != null)
    result += line;
    input.close();
    file.delete();
    result = result.substring( result.lastIndexOf( ' ' )).trim();
    } catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    result = e.getClass().getName() + " : " + e.getMessage();
    return result;
    The above code is used in getting the volume of a drive on windows, something like "80EC-C230"
    I gave the SYSTEM schema the required privilege to execute the code.
    EXEC DBMS_JAVA.grant_permission('SYSTEM', 'java.io.FilePermission', '<<ALL FILES>>', 'read ,write, execute, delete');
    EXEC DBMS_JAVA.grant_permission('SYSTEM', 'SYS:java.lang.RuntimePermission', 'writeFileDescriptor', '');
    EXEC DBMS_JAVA.grant_permission('SYSTEM', 'SYS:java.lang.RuntimePermission', 'readFileDescriptor', '');
    GRANT JAVAUSERPRIV TO SYSTEM;
    I have used the following to load the class in Oracle 9ir2 DB:
    loadjava -u [system/******@orcl|mailto:system/******@orcl] -v -resolve C:\Server\src\net\dev\Util.java
    CREATE FUNCTION A1(drive IN VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR2 AS LANGUAGE JAVA NAME 'net.dev.Util.a1(java.lang.String) return java.lang.String';
    variable serial1 varchar2(1000);
    call A1( 'C' ) into :serial1;
    The problem that it hangs when I execute the call to the function (I have indicated the line causing the problem in a comment in the code).
    I have seen similar problems on other forums, but no solution posted
    [http://oracle.ittoolbox.com/groups/technical-functional/oracle-jdeveloper-l/run-an-exe-file-using-oracle-database-trigger-1567662]
    I have posted this in JDeveloper forum ([t-853821]) but suggested to post for forum in DB.
    Can anyne help?

    Dear Peter,
    You are totally right, I got this as mistake copy paste. I'm just having a Java utility for running external files outside Oracle DB, this is the method runFile()
    I'm passing it the content of script and names of file to be created on the fly and executed then deleted, sorry for the mistake in creating caller function.
    The main point, how I claim that the line in code where creating external process is the problem. I have tried the code with commenting this line and it was working ok, I made this to make sure of the permission required that I need to give to the schema passing security permission problems.
    The function script is running perfect if I'm executing vbs script outside Oracle using something like "cscript //NoLogo aaa1.vbs", but when I use the command line the call just never returns to me "cmd.exe /c bb1.bat".
    where content of bb1.bat as follows:
    echo off
    vol C: | find /i "Serial Number is"
    The above batch file just get the serial number of hard drive assigned when windows formatted HD.
    Same code runs outside Oracle just fine, but inside Oracle doesn't return if I exectued the following:
    variable serial1 varchar2(1000);
    call A1( 'C' ) into :serial1;
    Never returns
    Thanks for tracing teh issue to that details ;) hope you coul help.

  • Executing a file with Java?

    Hi,
    I wanted to know how I could execute a file with java. Here are a couple scenarios - let's say I am developing an anti-spyware utility and I wanted to first write a batch file, and then create it in a folder, then run it when they click "Run". Then afterwards I want to shutdown their computer.
    My Mindset:
    - FileWriter to create the .bat and write the Batch commands.
    - Execute the batch file.
    - Execute the shutdown.exe file to reboot their PC.
    So my simple question is, how can I execute a file?
    Thanks!
    -Josh

    Well here is the code I have:
                try
                    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /c test.bat");
                catch(IOException e1)
                    //NOTHING
                }Now my cmd.exe is obviously in my Windows System32 folder, and my "test.bat" file is in my C:\ root directory. So I am wondering why that wont execute. I tried a fer other things too like:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe  c:\test.bat");that didn't work either, because you can't have a "\" in a string...
    So how can I get this thing to execute the batch file?

    Hi,
    You can execute .exe files in JAVA using the following code.
    Runtime rt1 = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process pc = rt1.exec("someexe.exe");
    you can get the output of the executed exe file in
    in = pc.getInputStream(); //this returns a InputStream
    hope this solves your problem.

  • Error executing batch file within web application

    Hi all,
    I am trying to execute a batch file from within my web application (struts 1.2).
    The batch file is being kept inside the 'src' folder. The batch file contains only one command to open NOTEPAD.
    The code inside my Action class is:
    URL url = getClass().getResource("/test.bat");
    java.io.File file = new java.io.File(url.getPath()) ;
    String path = file.getCanonicalPath();
    r.exec(path);
    I have deployed this on tomcat and get an error like this:
    java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "C:\Program%20Files\Apache%20Software%20Foundation\Tomcat%206.0\webapps\CIGTAFAPP\WEB-INF\classes\test.bat": CreateProcess error=2, The system cannot find the file specified
    The problem is not with the batch file because when I try to execute the file directly from the classes folder, it opens up the notepad editor.
    I have a specific requirement where I need to create/read this batch file from within the project structure.
    Can someone please help me with this?
    Regards

    The entire content of the file is as below:
    set javaTestProjectPath=D:\projects\CIGTAF\LRTestCases

    Make sure that the command that's being exec'd works from the cmd line.
    Then read this article and do what it says:

    Then if you still are having problems explain what "...it is not working with .msi files..." really means, and provide a [SSCCE Example program|http://mindprod.com/jgloss/sscce.html]

  • Executing an HTML file within java program

    I want my java code to be able to open/execute an HTML file that I have. How do you do this?
    Thanks.

    You can display html in a java app, but it is not so simple to run a browser. What you want to look up is the WebBrowser class. Here is an excerpt from some code of mine that displays a url in the browser app in a panel, but there's some chaff in my code you would not be interested in (I'm using a card layout). You're better off loocing up org.jdesktop.jdic.browser which contains the WebBrowser class    /**
         * Reveal the container with the browser display. The browser display is
         * currently hidded using a CardLayout, so it is a simple matter to swap
         * displays; however, we put off actually loading the web page until the
         * first time the display is revealed.
         * @return true if the URL could be resolved and the given web page
         * displayed.
        public boolean showBrowser(
            java.net.URL pURL )
            // See if the web page component has not initialized.
            if ( pWebBrowser == null )
                pWebBrowser = new WebBrowser();
                pBrowserPane.setViewportView( pWebBrowser );
            if ( aLastURLVisited == null || ! aLastURLVisited.equals( pURL ) )
                pWebBrowser.refresh();
                pWebBrowser.setURL( pURL );
                aLastURLVisited = pURL;
            pDualLayout.show( pDualPanel, BROWSER_PANEL );
            return true;
        }

  • Execute jar file without java

    we have got an jar file which when ported on a machine without java should be executed.

    we have got an jar file which when ported on a
    machine without java should be executed.If it needs to be a JAR and can't use native compilation, then you probably have a problem. Except if you want to create a JVM-containing wrapper around it, with the effect that a 200 kB JAR will become a 90 MB executable.
