Expanding/upgrading G4533

I'm new to posting a topic, but the discussions to date on my area of interest have been very informative. I recently retired as a Marketing Director, and am wanting to return to my first love which is graphic design and photography. I have a G4533 (mfg. 2001), model M7688. Besides the 533 Mhz processor it has 1 GB Ram, 60 GB hard drive, 24X CD-RW drive, Zip drive, 2 USB ports, 2 Firewire ports, 1 Ethernet port and the standard 56k internal modem. It runs Classic (9.2.1) and boots up in OSX (10.1.5).
Since I will also need to purchase a scanner, digital card reader, color laser printer (as well as no small amount of software plus ongoing upgrades) and not wanting to give up my first-born to buy one of the new Intel-based machines, my primary question is whether this G4 is expandable enough to handle some of the more graphics intensive programs as Adobe's CS3 Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, etc.). I'll also need Microsoft's Word, Excel. Power Point and possibly Outlook. Running the CS3 suite requires a DVD drive as well as OS 10.4. - neither of which the G4 has currently.
Talking with a local user who runs G5s at a printing company and an upgraded G4 at home, my impression is that I could upgrade to at least 10.4 (Tiger) and replace the CD-RW drive with a DVD drive. Max out the RAM at 1.5 GB, change the hard drive to 130 GB running at 7200 RPM, and change the processor to a dual 1.8 Ghz. Any further suggestions?
If the G4 isn't yet a 'boat anchor' and can be upgraded, is it practical cost-wise and how long would it serve the purpose going forward - given changing technology, etc.?
Thanks for any input.

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
Your DA isn't yet a boat anchor- in fact, it is a good candidate for upgrading. But, to bring it up to snuff, for some of the latest software, you will need to spend around $1000 to get the tower performance needed for some of the applications that you want to use. I am not so sure about CS3, but I use CS2, and the following suggestions will work well with CS2.
The processor upgrade is important. If the dual 1.8 that you speak of is a 7447 based processor, you may be better served by going with a 7455 based dual 1.4ghz processor. The difference is in the cache, and the 7455 has an L3 cache of 2mb (7447 has no L3), which effectively makes the slower processor faster than the 1.8, especially in graphics intensive applications.
Makers of the dual 1.4 are Fastmac and GigaDesigns:
http://www.gigadesigns.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=37
http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=198
If the dual 1.8 processor is 7448 based, the lack of L3 cache is made up for with a 1mb L2 cache, and would make the DA a screamer.
You will also need to upgrade the graphics card. For a 4x AGP card, new cards are limited, but available. Without venturing into flashed PC cards, the Radeon 9800 is a good upgrade:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435068/
As for the optical drive, the Pioneer DVR-112 is an excellent combo drive, and will support newer media, as well as all your favorite applications in OS X Tiger.
As mentioned, max the RAM at 1.5 to help with applications performance is a must.
And for the harddrive- one is not enough. You need at least two, and preferably three. With two drives, on the onboard ATA bus, you will be limited to drives no larger than 128gb. With the applications that you list, you won't have much left for storage, or for a scratch disk. Using one drive for the OS and applications, and one drive for files and scratch would provide better performance. The third drive, an external firewire drive, equivalent to the sum of the two internals, would be needed for backup of system and files. Using yet a larger ext. HDD would allow for archiving, as well.
You can use larger drives on the onboard bus, if you use the HiCap driver, with special partitioning, from Intech SpeedTools:
http://www.speedtools.com/ATA6.shtml
Better yet, and more reliable, would be to add a PCI HDD controller. This will allow use of large drives (up to 1TB) and if you were to add a PCI SATA controller, you could use the latest, fastest, enterprise technology with SATA II dives. SATA drives have some advantages over ATA, and do help with the overall performance of the system.
While on the PCI subject, a USB 2.0 card would help with connectivity of newer devices. The important factor in selectin a PCI USB 2.0 card is the chipset- the NEC chipset is most desireable. For more discussion of the issue, please see my post:

Best to avoid combo cards, ie. USB2.0/Firewire. If you need desire FW800, use a seperate card for best results.
That's one of the nice things about the DA- 4 PCI slots!

  • After installation of cs4 extended upgrade update installations get "adobe setup has stopped working

I've used CS3 and CS4 expanded (upgrade) on my older computer with Windows XP and though slow, mainly after cs4 was installed, they worked well. I've recieved a new computer for christmas and am moving my CS3 and CS4 expanded (upgrad) to the new computer and am having some problems.
My new computer setup is this.....
Windows Vista , Premium Home edition (65bit) with SP1
Intel Core i7-920 Quad Core Processor
    RAM -3GB DDR3
Amount of free disk space. 653 GB
Make/Model of Video Card. - ATI Radeon HD 4850
CS3 installs fine though on execution photoshop says that it prefers a dua core processor I click the continue button and it seems to run fine.
After installing CS3 I restart and upload CS4, which takes a long time!, then run bridge to install updates and thats where my first problem occurs.
When the updates are installing I get this message...."Adobe setup has stopped working" and windows looks for a solution which of course isn't there, ha!
So I've tried to use CS4 without the updates, run bridge, select a photo to open in photoshop and after photo opens in photoshop an error message comes up saying this "the specified modul could not be found C:\programfiles\commonfiles\adobe\Adobe Version Cue C44\client\4.0.1\Version Cue.DLL" and when I x out the error box photoshop closes, unable to use it any further (not bridge though)
I suspect this error message comes up because I can't do the updates? Either way I sure could use some help here!
Oh, and I've deactivated and reinstalled and the same happended after reinstallation.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

People like me, who distrust Adobe's updater, get the updates from the Adobe download site. That way you have control and you only get what you need. For example, if you are not working with colleagues on a network you don't need Version Cue.
Don't worry about the message regarding the processor. Adobe's installers are just as bad as their automatic updates and your processor is simply too new and they are not up-to-date. You may get similar false alarms with Bridge.

  • Upgrading MR 10.1.0.5 ?

We currently have installed Oracle AS (10.1.2.0.2) with Portal (10.1.4.0.0), SSO, OID, a Portal Repository and a MR (10.1.0.5).
We wish to CPU patch these and will be patching to Oracle AS 10.1.2.2.3 to allow us to achieve this, is it possible to upgrade the MR DB to 10.2.0.3 or 10.2.0.4 or does it have to be left at 10.1.0.5?
    Thanks for your help!

log into your Metadata Repository database and get the version the DB thinks it is
    select version from v$instance;
if the folder where your patch is has spaces in the name, rename so there are no spaces
    ie
    c:\Installs\My Patch 10.1.2.2 -> won't work
    c:\Installs\MyPatch10.1.2.2 -> will work
manually run precheck from a command prompt with the following commands
From MetaLink note 604865.1. It's for the 10.1.2.3 patch set, but the only thing different is the patch number in the path that I changed for 10.1.2.2.0
    1. Set the ORACLE_HOME environment variable to the value being used by the installer to update the Metadata Repository
    2. Go to the directory "Disk1/stage/Patches/oracle.webdb.upgrade/10.1.2.2.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded/upgrade/upg/plsql"
    3.Execute: /Disk1/stage/Patches/oracle.webdb.upgrade/10.1.2.2.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded/upgrade/upg/plsql> $ORACLE_HOME/perl/bin/perl upgrade.pl -l $ORACLE_HOME/portal/precheck.log -t $ORACLE_HOME/portal/tmp -precheck
    4. Answer all the questions that the script prompts for"
Check the $ORACLE_HOME/portal/precheck.log for what is holding up the patch.

    Hi,
Whatever steps you have done seems to be correct for adding an UDF in Create User page. If the UDF is not displayed, then refresh the content by clicking the refresh icon at the top right hand corner of the dialog box while selecting Add Content -> "Data component - catalog" -> userVO. Also I would suggest you to give an unique name while creating the UDF using form designer in sysadmin console. Try it again and it should work.
In worst case try the below steps
    1. Create and activate a Sandbox.
    2. On the left nav pane, expand Upgrade and click on link Upgrade User Form.
    3. On the page that opens, the table will display all your UDFs. Click Upgrade Now and wait for completion.
    4. Export(recommended) and Publish the sandbox.
After that create another sandbox in identity console, create sandbox, click on customize and after that try following the same process of adding from userVO

  • Is Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD still a good buy?

I have a B/W G3 as a second computer that I like for the expandability. I have upgraded the processor to 500Ghz with a Sonnet ZIF card. A 1.0 Ghz Zif card is $300. Would a MDD Dual 1.25 Ghz be a better buy?
My other computer is an original Mac mini (1.25) that is passable for most home use but I do do some freelance graphic design and I play around with Reason and Logic Express as a hobby.
What do current users of this model think of it's current value and usefulness? I see some models available at around $600 from PowerMax and about half that on eBay.
    Thanks.

My advice would be not spend another penny on the B/W. I had one too, expanded/upgraded to limits and confronted that same CPU issue years ago with the only thing really better than the 500MHz ZIF being that Sonnet.
$300 is not well spent on that Mac. They have all sorts of little glitches and limitations. It doesn't have an AGP slot for graphics cards (severly limiting your choices and ability to run applications like FCP, Motion, etc); flaky ATA chip (rev. 1); flaky FW; a bug that limits bandwidth with PCI cards; and a bug that affects CPU upgrades.
In order for that 1.Ghz ZIF to work, Sonnet has to downclock the system bus from 100MHz to 66MHz, effectively turning the B/W into a Beige. (That problem led to the demise of the upgrade manufacturer XLR8 (assets later sold to Daystar) as they tried in vain to produce a Dual CPU upgrade). The Dual 1.25 MDD would has a 167MHz FSB along with AGP slot, etc.
Warts and all, I really liked mine and had a blast upgrading it -- but at a certain point you've got to let it go. I traded it in for a DA years ago (when Apple offered the first G5s and the last MDDs). I upgraded that DA over time (suited my budget), but at the end of last year its GigaDesigns 1.33GHz dual upgrade went down -- I think it burnt a CPU. Should have bought a new MDD after all back then.
Similar to your current situation I priced new upgrades for my DA, anywhere from $300 up. I didn't think that was the best use of the cash either since for a little more I could buy an MDD with its advantages like faster FSB with some models (DA have 133MHz FSB), 2 optical drives, and doesn't have some bugs that my DA has affecting some graphics and storage cards. My requirement is to have one 9.x-booting machine. I use my MBP alot.
It's a long story, but I now have two MDDs -- one of which is a 1.25 Dual. That one got pieced together a bit -- I've been bit by the upgrade/tinkering bug -- so it's not yet in production but it's close. Each of those MDD alone will cost around or less than the price of DA upgrade, and that dual 1.25 is a bit better machine than the DA, and a lot better than your B/W even with a 1Ghz Sonnet.
If I balked at getting an upgrade for my DA (which is much better Mac than your B/W), I think you shouldn't spend money on yours. That $300 you're considering is better spent on new used Mac. A Dual 1.25 seem like solid Mac based on my testing so far with the one I have. Even say a dual 1GHz Quicksilver is a better place to put $300.

  • I upgraded Firefox, and now there is a blue band on my screen above the window, and I'm not getting the full use of the screen in viewing web pages. How can I get the window to expand to fill the screen as it did before?

There is a horizontal band or gap above the Firefox window at the top of the screen, where you can see the Windows desktop behind the Firefox window. On the left side of this band are the window tabs, and the menu bar, and another bar with the names of the open windows. I would like to have the Firefox window expand to fill the entire screen, like it did before the upgrade. Thanks.

Do you mean running Firefox in full screen mode?

If you are in full screen mode then you can hover the mouse to the top to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.<br />
You can click the Maximize button at the top right to leave full screen mode or right click empty space on a toolbar and use "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press F11.

You can also run Firefox in a maximized window to have easier access to the Menu bar and Navigation Toolbar.

I have recently purchased a hybred 750GbHDD as an upgrade for my MAC Book Pro (Intell Version) I have a boot camp partition to the original 500GB HDD. How can I expand both partitions to fit the new drive?
I have tried bootcamp and have had no luck due to the fact that boot camp doesn't see the additional HDD space of 250Gb. What am I not doing?

Ouch, well there is a problem.
This is the stack of partitions on your old drive
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (50GB say)
    Bootcamp (50GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
This is the same stack on your new drive imaged from the old one.
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (50GB say)
    Bootcamp (50GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
    Emtpy Space (100GB say)
    This is what you want
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (100GB say)
    Bootcamp (100GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
And you only have four partitions.
You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

After upgrading to RoboHelp 9 from 7 - the Collapse All and Expand All is not working.  I am taking over after attending a RoboHelp 9 Training Class a little over a week ago, so any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
What is your output? Where are the show/hide buttons placed: In the topic or in the toolbar? You're using RoboHTML right?
Did you use any kind of twisties in your RoboHelp 7 project? The show all hide all buttons are controlled by a custom script and I'd like to know which method you are using. (If you know which.) See also http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/twisty/twisty.htm
If you're not sure which method you are using, can you post the HTML of the show/hide all button/link?

I just upgraded my ipad to 6.0.  I can no longer expand my audio files so that I can move forwards and backwards.  I used to get a diagonal arrow to enlarge the screen and then have a bar that I can move to navigate. Can you help?

    Hi James,
I am listening to embedded training files on the Quick Time player (I think). They cannot be copied to protect the information.  You only have the option of listening.   I used to be able to click on the Q in the audio strip and it would provide a diagonal arrow and this would allow me to expand the bar to a full screen. I then had the bar which would allow me to navigate in case I wanted to listen again or in case I wanted to move forward.  After my upgrade, I can no longer expand the strip to a full screen with the adjuster.  Now I have not chance to take a break in listening to these audios and most of them are at least an hour long.  Thanks for your help.

recently upgraded to UR5 from UR3 of SCOM 2012 SP1.

I created an availability report (MS Generic Report Library) for one or more servers through the console.  It looks OK through the console, but when I open the report through the web interface to the report server, the "+ object(s)" section

This issue should be related with the report definition in the SSRS, it seems like that the object's visibility value  is show, but the sign is "-" when defined in the SSRS.

On Mac 10.6.8, when I create a new window by hitting command-N or going to the file menu, or if another page creates a new window, the new window just appears instantaneously. However, after upgrading to Mac 10.9.2, new windows appear by an "expanding" animation, which takes slightly longer than the old "appearing" behavior. (Other apps on my Mac do not exhibit the "expanding" behavior, only firefox.)
