Export Action Steps (Nate?)

Nate mentioned in his helpful reply to me that he imports/(exports?) with an action. I want to tell you a bit about my workflow and see if you can tell me what my action should be.
First, I'm creating slides for a video that will also be printed. So here is my workflow:
1) Created DV NTSC video preset
2) Changed resolution to 300 (for print reasons) and BTW the "resample Image" is checked as a default. BTW, the document is 10 inches by 6.667.
3) Created my slides
4) Flattened image as 300 dpi and took into an 8x5 x 11 matted/framed document for print
5) Now I'm ready to take it into Premiere. I had written an action that converted it to 72 dpi jpeg at 720 x 480. But, in another Adobe forum post I was told 72 dpi was not necessary (and maybe even bad),nor was jpeg. So, this time I used an action created in Photoshop and executed in Bridge. All it did was flatten the image. Here is my question....how would you write the action? My document is 3000 x 2000 at 300 dpi and is currently a .psd. If I change it to 720 x 480 it says the document is only about 2 inches now. But, if I change the resolution to 72 then it automatically goes to the 720 x 480 that I want. The advice seems contradictory.
Is an action written in Photoshop and executed in Bridge the right approach? If so, what should my action do?
Thanks!
Holly

Holly,
All of my Actions are executed in PS. I often have all sorts of needs, as do you. I may have an Action to get my images into Hi-rez .TIFF's for ink on paper reproduction. These will be converted to CMYK Mode, and will either be based on my standard CMYK, or the instructions from the client's printer. I may also have to do Hi-rez TIFF's for use with the client's desktop printers or with other programs. I have an Action for that. Next, is often a Hi-rez JPEG for sending out to a Web developer, and probably a Low-rez JPEG for the client to do this in house, or to attach to e-mails. There could also be .PDG's in several flavors. Once more, there's an Action for each and they are applied in PS. I create recipient sub-folders for each output, and my original files are never overwritten.
Now, with video, it is only the pixel x pixel dimensions that matter. Do not worry about inches. Do not worry about dpi, ppi or lpi. They do not matter. It is only pixels x pixels. Here, I re-size to my Project frame-size, or slightly over that, should I have to pan on a zoomed out image. Most of what I do can be sized to exactly what my Project dictates, NTSC 4:3, or 16:9 DV output. If I need some images a bit bigger for the pans, I find the biggest needed, and use that for the rest. I output to a special sub-folder in .PSD. I do not use JPEG compression, unless the client has provided these, against my instructions. Save with GIF and even PNG. I do not want the color space changed, modified or compressed. Again, I do this all in PS. I have never used Bridge to work with my Actions, but then I'm in PS already and use Bridge as my "album/browser."
Since I edit primarily in PrPro, when I Import my .PSD's, I have two choices: Import_As_Footage, which Flattens my .PSD Layers, or as an Import_As_a_Sequence, which brings in all Layers in a separate Sequence. I do the latter, if I need to animate my Layers. In PrPro, a Sequence could be thought of as a "mini-Project," within the main Project.
Hope that this makes sense. If I missed a point, or was not clear on a few more, please call me on it. I'll be happy to restate, or give examples.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Action steps that won't run correctly in PSE 7/8/9 (but did in 4 and 6)

I have a wonderful action that was written to work in PSE 3/4/6.  It won't run in PSE 7/8/9.  After fooling around for a while, I think I understand why.  Adobe changed the way Adjustment Layers are handled.  In earlier versions of Photoshop and Elements, Adjustment Layers threw up a modal dialog box.  That changed so that Adjustment Layers now appear in the Palette Bin as a palette.
Here a sample of some of the action steps that won't work correctly:
    Make adjustment layer
    Using: adjustment layer
    Type: levels
    Set Selection
    To: none
    Set current layer
    To: layer
    Name:  “Adjustment 1”
    Set current layer
    To: layer
    Mode: luminosity
    Stop
    Message:  “Move gray slider left”
    With Continue
    Set current adjustment layer
    To: levels
In earlier versions of PS and PSE, the way these steps would work is that a new adjustment layer would be created, the dialog box giving the instruction would open, it would be dismissed by clicking "Continue," and then the "Set current adjustment layer to: Levels" would generate a model adjustment layer dialog box would open up which would let one make the adjustment.
In newer versions, since Adjustment Layers are handled in the Palette Bin, after dismissing the instructions, the action doesn't stop to allow the user to make change the sliders on the adjustment layer.
The action runs perfectly in CS4 and CS5 and throws up the levels adjustment modal box as it did in PSE 4 and PSE 6, but the action doesn't throw the modal box in PSE 7/8/9
Does anyone know of a way to alter the action steps to allow the action to stop to allow the adjustment and then to resume again?

Adding a new levels adjustment layer on top of the Midtone contrast layer
should work, just use a clipping mask to restrict the adjustments to the
areas of the levels adjustment layer below. The histogram will be different, but
actually testing the action is really the only way to know if that makes any difference.
Replacing the levels adjustment layer is another option, though it requires a few more steps.
The following assumes when the action gets to this point,
the Midtone contrast adjustment layer is the active (selected) layer.
To record this part of the action:
    1. Duplicate current channel (in the channels panel. drag the Midtone contrast mask
down to the Create new channel icon at the bottom of the channels panel)
    2. Ctrl+click on the newly created channel (Midtone contrast mask copy)
This loads the selection of that channel.
    3. Drag the new channel (midtone contrast mask copy) to the trash icon at the bottom
       of the channels panel.
    4. Back in the layers panel, delete the Midtone Contrast adjustment layer.
    5. Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels
This creates a new levels adjustment layer using the selection loaded from
the duplicated channel and opens the levels dialog.
To load the RGB (composite) as a selection, Ctrl+click on the rgb in the channels panel
and the same is true for the red, green and blue channels.
With layer masks, elements doesn't seem to want to load them as selections in actions,
so that's the reason for the action steps above.

  • Lightroom Export Action and Automator

Hi. Have an interesting anamoly that I hope someone an explain to me. I am trying to leverage Adobe Lightroom's export preset post-processing option to help in importing photos into iPhoto (where I can make easy use of the .mac photocasts). I created an Automator workflow comprised of the following actions: 1) Get Specified Finder items (with the export folder from Lightroom selected) 2) Get Folder Contents 3) Import Photos into iPhoto (with the delete source option selected).
I placed the Automator app, named "Import to iPhoto" into the Lightroom "Export Actions" folder and selected it in the post-processing drop down in my export preset. When exporting from this preset, the file(s) are exported as expected, however, for some reason the Automator action imports duplicate files into iPhoto for each photo exported. If the photos are exported separately without the post-processing export action, and then the Automator action is run manually, there are no duplicate files imported. Does anybody have any ideas what might be occuring here?

  • Export Actions

After processing, I want to export to two external drives in one operation. I'm assuming I can send to the second drive using an Export Action, but I can't figure out how to do this. Anyone?

Make an action in PS that does this, then make droplet of that, put into LR folder, run. Although I'd be inclined to just make a copy of the folder from time to time.

  • Limiting the file size on Export Action

    Hi,
Is there an easy way of limiting the file sizes created by the Export action by simpoly stating the limit, for example 5MB?
    Thanks,
    Ronen

But you can proxy it by knowing that, say, a JPEG at 3000 x 3000 at 90% quality will be about 5 Gigs. - example, figures not meant to be accurate. Or a Tiff at 1000 X will be.....

  • Export actions parameters

Is there any way to change the parameters LR send to programs (WIN)?
For example i have a export profile that saves images to e:\export\web and then opens my FTP program (filezilla). I placed the filezilla shortcut to export actions folder... Now when ftp program opens after export, it ties to connect site called E.
Same thing with my email program thunderbird, opening it after export it reports "e is not a registered protocol".
Also i tried to edit export presets manually to add command line parameters to programs that are opened (forexample filezilla.exe -s defaulsite), but those parameters were ignored.

Yes you can drag files straight to filezilla. BTW if i change my export location to somewhere in F:\ drive LR now passes "f" parameter to programs. I would understand LR would pass the whole folder to programs or would not pass anything, but this is quite annoying. Or LR passes some arguments in "table form" where first cell is drive letter...
Adding web browser as an export action opens the file, so i believe the programs that i have used don't support the parameters LR is trying to send.

  • Export actions in merchandizing project in bcc 10.1

    Hi,
I was using the export action in a merchandizing project to dowload an xls of my media-internal assets.
It says successfully exported but not say where it has been saved. How to check where my assets have been exported???
Any pointers would be really helpfull.

It will show your browser's file open/save dialog for the generated Excel file and depending on your browser settings file may also get downloaded automatically. Make sure you don't hit ESC to close the success message notification that appears on screen as it can accidentally close the file open/save dialog as well.

  • Exporting action script in 2nd frame

I have a preloader in frame one so I export frame for classes
in frame two in the publishing settings. I have a scrolling
component in the .fla and when I set up the linkage for the
scrollable movie clip, it exports into the 1st frame. How do I tell
Flash to export action script for component in 2nd frame? Because
of the conflict with the publishing settings set at frame 2, the
scroll bar won't work unless I publish export action script into
    frame one.
    Please help,
    Darryl

Thank you for replying. I was instructed that it is better to
have the action script load in the second frame if my preloader is
in the first frame in order for the page to cache faster on the
users PC. So in the Publish Settings, in the Flash Tab under
Settings, I was informed to "export frame for classes in "2".
The action script for the compenent in the Library only gives
me the choice of it exporting in frame 1. And because they do not
correspond, the scroll bar will not appear unless I change the
Publish settings to export in frame 1 and I will get this error
    message Error opening URL
    "file:///D|/Flash%20Studio%208/nams/scroll".
My goal was to increase the download speed of the Flash page.
Is there a way to get the compenent Action script to export in
Frame 2? The only option box through the Library Linkage is Frame
    1.
    Thank you again for responding,
    Darryl

Currently, functionality for retrieving the Metadata Token for a class constructor or member is not fully provided in the TestStand .NET Adapter API. The DotNetModule.GetConstructorMetadataToken() and DotNetModule.GetMetadataToken() methods only return the correct Metadata Token when the member/constructor prototypes have already been loaded. Thus, in the case of your code, when you call DotNetModule.GetMetadataToken(), the method is returning -1 because the member prototype for the Step you are referring to has not yet been loaded.
That means have to do a workaround for your stuff.

  • 2 different problems using Export Action

I'm using LR 1.1 and Photoshop CS3 on a MacPro and PowerBook. I created an identical Action in PS to use as an Export Action in LR. It was to export .dng files, open them, run Noise Ninja (many were high ISO shots), and some other things.
On one Mac, the files would only open in Adobe Raw Converter, so I'd still have to click to go further for each. With the other, I'd get an error message immediately in Photoshop once the file opened, saying "Feather Command not available". (I had done nothing consciously in creating the Actions (later Droplets) to put in such a command.
My guest teacher, who knows Photoshop (and Lightroom) far better than I, knows of now reason why such a "feather" error would come up.
Any reason why an Action written to be identical except for where the files are ultimately saved should work so differently on 2 Macs (both with OS 10.4.9)? Or how I can cure these problems? I'd love to be able to write more Actions to Droplets I can use as Export Actions from LR. (And some I've written *do* work, just not the last couple...)

I've modified the script so that it now actually works as I want it to (more-or-less).
I will look into using Get-Hotfix instead of WMIC to check that I am happy with the returned data.

  • Units error when exporting to STEP

I am importing data from CADDS 5 parts into Acrobat 3D. I then export data to STEP, and then import the STEP files into Catia V5. The scale is always off when I make measurements in CATIA V5 (the unit value is always much smaller than it should be). I am measuring in inches in Acrobat 3D and Catia. The scale in the Acrobat 3D PDF file is good according to my measurements. I don't think the problem is with Catia, because all of my other STEP imports into Catia are fine.
I could not find any setting in Acrobat 3D to change export units for STEP to inches. When I try exporting to IGES from Acrobat 3D and then import into Catia, the scale is good, but not when I export to STEP.
I am using Acrobat 3D version 8.1.1 on Windows 2000. Is this a bug in Acrobat 3D, or is there a setting somewhere that I have missed?

    Hi William,
My company paid for the upgrade to Acrobat Pro Extended from Acrobat 3D, specifically for the fix for the CADDS to 3D PDF to STEP conversion process.  Unfortunately the problem is not fixed in Acrobat Pro Extended 9.
The 2x5x10 inch CADDS 5 solid model that I imported into APEX 9 and then exported to STEP is still dimensionally incorrect.  Instead of measuring 2x5x10 inches, the solid in the STEP file measures 2x5x10 mm.
To confirm the problem I measured the model in CADDS 5 and in APEX 9, and it measured 2x5x10 inches.  Then I exported from the APEX model to STEP and measured the STEP file in a STEP viewer and it was 2x5x10 mm.  I also imported the STEP file into Catia V5 and again it measured 2x5x10 mm.  For one last check, I exported the APEX model to IGES, and the IGES file measured correctly at 2x5x10 inches.  The problem only exists in the STEP export from APEX.
I have attached a zip file containing all of the various models I created in my tests.  Please examine these files and you can see the problem.
We still need the ability to convert from CADDS to 3D PDF to STEP, so we will appreciate a fix to this problem.  We are using APEX 9.0.0.
    Thanks for the help,
    John

  • TestStand Action Step Type

    Hello, all--
I have a TS question on the Action step type, no adapter.  In code I am maintaining, I see this step type used to output information to a custom report.  The data/comment to output is put into StationGlobals.Measurement.String and StationGlobals.Measurement.ActionType is set to 1 or 2.  The TS documentation tells me the action step is an NI step type, and it doesn't appear that this has been customized in any way.  I cannot find any documentation either in built-in help or online explaining how to use the action step in this manner or what values are valid for .ActionType and what they signify.
Am I wrong?  Is this a customized step type, or is this use just undocumented?  If someone has knowledge about using action step like this, please reply.  Thanks very much.

    Hey ctakac,
Look in your StationGlobals.  Ctrl-G or View->StationGlobals.  In there you should have a container (I'm assuming) called Measurements.  If you expand that you should see String and ActionType.  It should tell you the type in the Type column.  It is probably Number since it's set to 1 or 2.  Whoever set up your StationGlobals inserted this as I've never seen it before.
The Action Step Type is native to TS and they are probably using those StationGlobals to either get set or set a step property.  Go to the step that is doing this and look at the properties.  Look in the Expressions and see if they are using them there.  They could also be used in the Precondition or PostAction.
Let me know what you find,
