EXPORT to TIFF/PSD Why "Embed ICC Profile?"

I export high res TIFFs and PSDs a lot from Illustrator. One option is EMBED ICC PROFILE. I'm going to PS to build my composite. When should I embed the profile, and when shouldn't I?
When I open in PS, even if I don't Embed, doesn't PS know what colorspace the doc was created?
Just curious.
Maxi

Embed the profile. But then be careful how to treat the images in Photoshop.
Would be best to sychronize color settings between all the Creative Suite apps, so that no color conversion needs to be done.
If you need to convert profiles, you should convert into profile, not just apply a different profile.

  • How to set "embed icc Profile" option  to export document as JPEG

    Hi All,
    While exporting the document as jpeg, through File->Export, there is an option "Embed ICC Profile" as figure shows.
    How to set it if I am exporting the document through my program in which I rasterize the document and used
    the sAIImage->AsJPEG(raster, jpegDataFilter, params);
    I didn't find any option in AIRasterizeSettings or AIImageOptJPEGParams to set this flag.
    plz anyone suggest me how to do so.
    Thanks,
    Rud.

    thanks for you through out help.
    I use the folowing code which executing properly,but there is no effect on JPEG whether the value of jpegparam.s.jpeg.embedICCProfile is 0 or 1.
    /////Start
    ASOptimizationSettings jpegparam;
    jpegparam.fileFormat = asffJPEG;
    jpegparam.s.jpeg.embedICCProfile = isICCProfileEmbeded;
    ASInt32 optID;
    optID = sAIOptSet->GetUniqueOptimizationSettingsID();
    error = sAIOptSet->SetOptimizationSettings(optID, &jpegparam); // after executing this line error = 0
    /////End
    I guess it would  work when we export document as jpeg through AIActionManagerSuite
    not with  rasterizing the layer's art and then exporting them as JPEG  using AsJPEG().
    thanks

  • How to embed ICC profile

    Hello,
    I'm trying to embed an icc profile in a pdf, I am actually doing like this:
      char *filePath=NULL;
              ASPathName ICCPath;
              asprintf(&filePath,"%s/ICC_PROFILES/%s",DataDirName,profileName);
      #if !macosx
                        ICCPath = ASFileSysCreatePathFromDIPath(NULL,filePath,NULL);
              #else
                        ICCPath = GetMacPath(filePath);
              #endif
              ASFile iccProfile = NULL;
              ASFileSysOpenFile (NULL, ICCPath, ASFILE_READ, (ASFile *)&iccProfile);
              ASStm asStmICC = ASFileStmRdOpen(iccProfile,0);
              int tmp = ASFileGetEOF(iccProfile);
              char* buff=calloc(tmp,1);
              ASStmRead(buff,1,tmp,asStmICC);
              AC_Profile profil = NULL;
              ACMakeBufferProfile(&profil,buff,tmp);
              PDDocColorConvertEmbedOutputIntent(pdDoc,profil);
    it's kind of work since I have the icc profile inside my pdf file (I can see it with vim)
    but I'm having issue when trying to open it with Photoshop ... Photoshop don't see the embeded profile.
    any idea ?
    Regards,
    William

    An OutputIntent Profile (which is what you are creating with the PDDoc call at the end) is NEVER used by PDF UNLESS the PDF is also compliant with one of the subset standards (eg. PDF/A, PDF/E, PDF/X) - see ISO 32000-1:2008, 14.11.5.
    Why are you setting this profile?  Is the PDF a single page with a single raster image?

  • Why embed color profiles?

    I understand color profiles as translators of the image data for the device to show as it shoudl appear (to me, the human eye)
    Why not apply this translation as a conversion (profile tells how the color values shoudl appear, right?) and done with it. Then the monitor should use it's profile to show the file correctly.
    The whole idea of "working space" or choosing/applying a profile to an image seems only to apply this translation (the profile).
    Why ask? Or why even have an image + profile, when one can simply do image x profile = a single profiled origianl image? In RAW conversion is this not what we are doing? And if so, why have the profile name attached to the file, when it is already converted?
    Or did I got it all wrong? When I think I get it, soon I start to see - may be I am not getting it

    As this topic (color management) makes me to research and learn continuously, I am curious to understand more about your comment on LAB: "...numerous issues with Lab although the fact it's self defining (until you ask about white point)" What about the white point in LAB? I don't know if that should be another discussion.
    In the meantime I got my answers, and a book called "Color Confidence" seems to clarify it well. In fact it has a reddish text box just for the precise question "Why not Lab?" ("why embed profile" is implied in the context). What pinned it well was the statement "Of course, provided a profile is embedded in an image file, the RGB and CMYK values are, in a way, stored as LAB..."
    The text can be found in Google books preview: http://books.google.co.in/books?id=XprFp9u4lcAC&q=why+not+lab
    what appeals to me now, is this:
    The intention is to give real world colors and consistently accross devices (with different color spaces)
    To achieve it, it is done through profiles
    Original digital image (RGB or CMYK) are easier to edit as RGB or CMYK (user friendly to move those sliders of R G and B) than LAB sliders (are there sliders in LAB? I have not explored)
    Though one could have untagged files, adding a profile tries to dictate some consistency to them for further use/editing. If that was not fixed for the digital image, it will be free for each app to use any color profile and make colors look different each time. I am not even talking of display and print profile here, assume they were all set.
    My botheration has only been the first step of digital image. Not display and print profiles, that is, why is the original digital not converted to LAB? Now it becomes clear.

  • Why we tick Embed Icc Profile in Illustrator when we save file?

    @

    One thing to note when working with embedded color profiles.
    I generally work under Adobe illustrator and I often post my work on Behance. I work with 'sRGB IEC61966-2.1' color profile. When publishing I use *.jpg with embedded ICC Color Profile. Adobe® Illustrator® can export only to the JPEG File Interchange Format JFIF (whereas Photoshop exports to the JPEG EXIF):
    (JPEG) Formally, the EXIF and JFIF standards are incompatible. This is because both specify that their particular application segment (APP0 for JFIF, APP1 for Exif) must be the first in the image file. In practice, many programs and digital cameras produce files with both application segments included. This will not affect the image decoding for most decoders, but poorly designed JFIF or Exif parsers may not recognize the file properly ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_File_Interchange_Format#Exif_comparison )
    What the consequences of having your work in the JFIF format are? It appears that Behance doesn’t fully support the JPEG JFIF - for example it cannot read its ICC data correctly. The effect is that my work looses its quality! The only option to produce the JPEG EXIF I have now is to: Export *.ai file to JPEG (under Adobe Illustrator) > go to Photoshop > Create new project > Paste the *.jpg > and Sava As JPEG with icc embedded. This guarantees my files are being processed correctly.

  • Heads-up - Don't Export ICC Profiles With Illustrator Files

    Hello everyone,
    I have a new Motion project (yea!) and I started out creating a 56-point star in Illustrator CS4 with a specific RGB color value and saved it as Illustrator CS4 with PDF compatibility. I brought it into Motion no problem but the RGB value was changed. I futzed with it for a few minutes and figured out that the default save in Illustrator has "Embed ICC Profiles" checked. I unchecked this and saved it again and it came into Motion with the correct RGB values.
    Rock on.

    RGB output profiles only in Lightroom. Use Photoshop.

  • Converting image data to given ICC Profile?

    I am considering using a pro printer to print my photos. On their site they provide ICC profiles for there printer which I can use to soft proof.
    The site states
    "Our Fuji 570 printer does not read embedded profiles, so the image data must be converted. This changes the data in the file to compensate for how our lab's machine actually prints colors."
    Can anyone tell me how I should export from Aperture that converts the image rather than embedding the profile?
    BTW I have a calibrated monitor and I am processing RAW files from my 400D.
    Thanks.

    Can anyone tell me how I should export from Aperture
    that converts the image rather than embedding the
    profile?
    Make a new export preset that uses the provided ICC profile. Aperture will then convert to the chosen profile on export.

  • Importance of embedding ICC profiles

    I have created a package of logos in different versions. 30 versions in all. However each logo weights around 1.2 mb. It contains nothing but a few vectors and colors, no blends no images.
    If I save as unchecking "Embed ICC profile" the weights falls to around 188 k
    Is it a bad idea unchecking the ICC profile?
    BR

    You don't need a color profile if the the artwork was created or approved in the color space of the destination. For example if you create a CMYK document in U.S. web coated (SWAP) v2 color space and the file will be printed on a offset press in North America on a coated paper which uses the same color profile then you don't need the profile attached. It will make no difference because the source and destinations are the same. You need the profile if the color space of the destination is unknown or different than the color space of the document for example if the mentioned file above is printed on matte paper or on another kind of printer and there is no color profile to tell the meaning of the colors, the colors will print wrong.

  • Assigning ICC profile to an AI or EPS document (that has no profile)

    Hi
    I´m using Illustrator CS6.
    I have some AI and EPS files without embed ICC profiles.
    I´m trying to write a JavaScript that opens each document, assign the working ICC profile then save and close.
    Have already done everything about opening and closing. It´s perfect.
    The problem is the embeding ICC profile. Reading Illustrator JavaScript reference I did not find any method I could use to assign an ICC profile to the activeDocument.
    Can you confirm it´s really not possible? (to assign an ICC profile to the opened topmost document)
    Thank you a lot
    Gustavo.

    Hi Muppet
    Yes the polices work for files that originally has an embed profile. But considering EPS without a profile, it opens in Illustrator as "untagged RGB" or "untagged CMYK"...so the ended AI file wont have a profile!
    Will make some other tests here. Altought a little crazy, I found a solution working this way:
    1. After opening the EPS, I made a function to unlock all layers and sublayers.
    2. Another function to unlock all pageItems then select it (so All pageItems are selected).
    3. Used app.copy();
    4. Added a new blank document that already comes with the working profile.
    5. Used app.paste(); to paste in the new document.
    6. Used the method to fit the artboard to the selection
    7. Saved as AI file
    8. Remove the EPS file using File.remove();
    It worked and got what I was expected to have as result. However some EPS had a lot of element..then it tooks a long time to select everything and copy A little crazy but solved my problem hahaha
    Best Regards
    Gustavo.

  • ICC Profiles: Why No Embedding Upon JPEG Export?

    Hi all! I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but a forum search revealed many unrelated threads. So here's my question: why doesn't Lightroom support embedding ICC profiles? The lack of this feature seems more of a design issue than something they haven't had time to add, so I'm curious to know if anyone knows why Adobe has chosen to skip this feature. I'm no ICC expert, so perhaps there's a good reason, but it would be nice to have it as an option to get JPEG images that match the ICC profile of my monitor...
    Anyone have any insight on this issue?

    >What ICC profile does it embed then since it doesn't offer the user a choice?
    It offers the user a choice between sRGB, adobeRGB and prophotoRGB. It always embeds the profile. You can tell whether the profile is embedded in lots of programs. One of them is preview in mac os X for example. Another is photoshop.
    >let's say that I'm sending an image off to get printed at an online printer. What ICC profile would I want to have embedded in the JPEG?
    You want to use a working space profile such as sRGB. your monitor's profile is only meaningful to you as there is no second monitor like yours in the world. If the printer is good, they will convert your image from your monitor's profile to their printer's profile, but very few online labs do this and it is usually a recipe for bad prints. Most just assume your image is in sRGB, whether it is tagged/embedded or not. Your safest bet therefore is sRGB. If the lab/printer indicates that they really color manage and they seem to know what they are talking about, you can try using a wider space such as adobeRGB or even prophotoRGB.

  • Export as .tiff w/ embedded ICC profile support

    Hello-
    I usually hang out in the Color Management forums but thought this would be a better place to ask my question.  I am trying to determine what the oldest version of Illustrator supports the Export as .tiff and allow for profiles to be embedded in the .tiff file.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I am trying to avoid having to find install source for Illy 7.0, 8.0 etc.
    Best Regards,
    Bryan

    This gets better and better, Bryan.
    Here is a screen shot of the TIFF Options dialog in AI 8 running on Mac OS Classic.
    No embed option, just as with the Win version, however...
    The resulting TIFF opened in Photoshop with an embedded profile -- in this case U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2, which is the printer profile setting in my AI 8 Mac.
    I repeated the experiment in AI 8 Win, just to make sure. Sure enough, no embedded profile!
    Yow.

  • LR3 Flickr export plugin. Is the export without ICC profile available?

    Hey guys,
    I want to use the new integrated Flickr export plugin in LR3 to publish my picture on my photostream.
    Since I want my pictures to look the same accross all browsers I want to convert them to sRGB and I don't want to embed the ICC profile.
    I haven't seen any option in LR3 that allows me to do so. I have to do it in photoshop (save for the webs without profile) and then import it manually using Flickr update webpage. In my opinion, it is kind of weird that Adobe didn't think about that. Is there an option somewhere, a workaround?

    I just opened the files again in CS4 and in Safari 4.0.5 and the all look the same, just as they did in Safari 5.0.
    Safari 4.0.5 displays the files as I would expect, at least on my MacPro and MacBook Pro.  You may have found a solution but I'm afraid you don't really know what the problem was.
    Sorry, JB.  Safari does know how to correctly display images.
    Ah ah! You are not raining on my parade. From the comments on the page I have mentioned, it seems that not everybody has this issue. Could it be an issue with another Safari version (4.0.??). I don't remember exactly which version I had. Could it be a compatibility issue with some driver or ...?
    Even though I am not sure what the problem was, don't you think I can assume that the problem was not with my files or my calibration?

  • Aperture 3 messes histogram when exporting to either PSD or TIFF

    Hi all,
    I wanted to ask a question regarding how Aperture 3 handles the PSD/TIFF files. I've noticed that when i export a RAW file to Photoshop or to any other plugin (Noise Ninja for this instance) and Aperture prepares the file (i.e. makes a TIFF/PSD copy of the RAW file) it messes my histogram. As a consequence in a specific case i am working on now, it brightens up the shadows and lowers contrast.
    Anyone knows why this happens? Is there any way i can stop this from happening?
    Thanks in advance

    P.S: Setting the Black point to the default Aperture value (3) on the TIFF/PSD file generated, results in a very similar result with the RAW file. Could it be the case that during the file conversion, aperture ignores some Exposure settings?

    When I try to paste an CCI file into  a PSD, I get this message…   Could not complete the Paste command because the ICC profile is invalid.
    I need the layer to be an editable smart object! What's the solution?
    Ron

    I received the file from my client. However, last week I had no trouble pasting the same file into a PSD file, as a smart object.
    The color file is a label mechanical, which I place into a PSD file of the product. These are used for print ads and web graphics. The color is very critical and has worked really well for the last 4 years.
    I have used the default color settings in Creative Suite and its been working fine. They are in synch and, I have no idea how to re-assign the color profile. I’m a graphic Designer, color correction is not something I would do normally.
