....exporting 720p to Widescreen 16x9 DVD

I have video that was shot in 720p format using the Panasonic HVX200. When you open the clips in Quicktime and check the information you can see that the Frame size is 960x720 (1248x702). The Frame size is at 1248x702 but once imported into FCP where the the squeeze takes place you then see its 960x720. Okay now to finalize out of my timeline, I want to go through compressor and export a high quality widescreen 16x9 file that I can play on my 42 inch widescreen plasma....
Sorry for writing like this. It's just that I been searching for existing results on my problem within the forum and have found nothing. Most posts I dont even understand what is trying to be encoded. Ok back to ...
I did an encode where I used the High Quality Widescreen preset and it burned properly. When played on a standard television it creates the black bars on top and bottom, nice. When played on the big plasma it fills the screen perfectly, nice. Now here is my problem. There are some pixelation issues in quality. Some areas not so much but overall the quality is quite bad for being born in HD.I know its being burned to SD but is there a way to encode this with optimal quality? Help, tips, sugesstions, spells to get this playing properly is greatly appreciated. Here is the specs on the video in my timeline:
DVCPRO HD 720p60 960x720

Ricardo,
know you posted this a while ago but I ran into a different issue, and this info might help:
http://www.cineform.com/products/TechNotes/HVX200Resolution/HVX200Resolution.htm
Seems like the HVX200 does not record "true" HD 1280x720, but rather compresses to 960x720. The pixels aren't square, they're anamorphic and thats why they playback at 1248x702 (quicktime makes the adjustment so they view correctly).
The solution they offer is to upres to native HD 1280x720, then output your film to DVD. This should help.

  • Flash - SD Widescreen PAL DVD

Hey everyone, I did post this one level back as another topic, but then started reading around and figured this may be a better place to post. I apologize for the double post, won't happen again - I'm new to the user forums here and I admit that this is a bit of a desperate plea for help. I apologize in advance.
So, I've been working on a project recently that's been kind of difficult for me to test since I don't have access to the platform I'm trying to develop for. I was hoping somebody might be able to help guide me to the information I need, or let me know outright if I'm on the right track or completely out to lunch with my thinking here.
Anyway, shorthand version of what I'm trying to accomplish: I'm trying to design a 16:9 wide screen video animation. I built the animation using Flash CS3. Originally it was built for NTSC but now needs to be burnt to DVD in a PAL format. I re-sized my animation to be 1024 x 576 (square pixels) at 25 FPS and exported it from Flash as a .mov using the Animation Codec. (Exported with 16:9 PAL settings at 720x576 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.422.) I brought the new rendered file into Adobe Encore and set up my chapters etc. All footage has been interpreted as SD PAL Widescreen 1.422 PAR.
When I view the Movies I export from flash (off my desktop) they are 1024 x 576 square pixels ... they appear distorted and aliased. After burning the videos to DVD with the footage interpreted as previously mentioned, I tried viewing them on my computer. The screen capture resolution is 720 x 404 ... which is kind of odd to me. I would expect 720 x 480 or even 720 x 576. Overall though the quality is pretty nice and doesn't look greatly distorted.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is: Is that normal? Is that right? wrong? Ultimately though, does anyone know what a Widescreen PAL DVD would look like viewed on a windows XP machine? (In Windows Media Player with a DVD Codec?)
Any guidance or help on this would be greatly appreciated. If there is any other information I can provide you with to help with understanding my plight, please let me know.
I'm a web designer backed into a corner here and really don't have a whole lot of video experience. I'm also living in Canada and don't have access to a PAL system to watch the final product on ... so I'm just trying to get my settings as accurate as I can on my end.
    Thanks in advance.

    >The screen capture resolution is 720 x 404 ... which is kind of odd to me.
On playback the movie is displayed with square pixels. If the DVD plays 720 pixels wide then the corresponding height will be 405 for a 16:9 movie.

  • Cs3- exporting dv ntsc widescreen-solution

    Hi
Im using CS3 with dv avi type 2 source material , 780x420 Interlaced, 29.97, 16:9 ( widescreen ). Video length is about 50 minutes.
I don't have Sorenson (can't afford now )...and am using CS3 to export to burn a DVD.  My impression has been, according to posts here, that CS3 is not the best way to export ...that using frameserver and Sorenson is better...
However, I am new to this and have a lot to learn about the compression used to export for DVD...and so I tried a couple things in CS3.
    1) checked preset(s)... for mpeg2-dvd (format) , ntsc high quality preset.
In this case the quality is set by CS3 to 4, lower field first, aspect 4:3, vbr 2 pass, with 1.5, 4 , 7 as min, target, max bitrates.
In the preset for ntsc widescreen medium quality (there is no high quality widescreen preset)...everything is the same except it is vbr 1 pass. and aspect is set to 16:9.
I exported using ntsc high quality but changed quality to 5 from 4, min bitrate to 2 instead of 1.5...aspect to 16:9 from 4:3.
It looked horrible.  major horizontal lines throughout...sawtooth patterns, etc.
    Harm Millaard suggested a calculator:
    http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php
I put in my info and got the suggestion to use 8 mpps for bitrate, CBR...
    Did that export....
Looks horrible !....  major horizontal lines, sawtooth patterns...
    info from calculator:
-------------  calculator will suggest CBR in 2 circumstances instead of VBR 2 pass ---------
Second, when there is enough space on the disc to make the average  bitrate equal to or greater than the maximum bitrate. In this case, a  VBR file would effectively be CBR, therefore it makes no sense to use  the VBR mode (which takes longer to encode). If the calculator suggests  VBR with an average bitrate value that is very close (i.e., within 10%)  of the maximum bitrate value, you can greatly reduce the encoding time  (with a very small loss in quality) by selecting CBR mode.
Sooo, I decided since interlaced video was apparantly NOT AN OPTION ...I went to progressive....
And wanting to take advantage of EVERY OUNCE OF QUALITY I decided to force CS3 to do a VBR 2 pass export using 8,8, 8 as the min, target and max bitrates....
This would seem dumb because CBR at a setting of 8 should be the same thing....
But for some reason I decided to do this crazy thing...and it looks good ....
Although this is fine for now I am wondering....why does interlaced look so terrible ?
I also wonder what the M frames and N frames default settings of 3 and 15 is the same for all presets.  My GOP is apparently I - frame = 1
P frames = 17, GOP limit = 18....  but how that translates to M frames (number of B frames between consecutive I frames and P frames) and N frames ( number of frames between I frames - must be mulitiple of M frames value )  ????  What's the story with this and why the default of 3 M frames and 15 N frames ?  Confusing.
Don't know if this will ever help anyone else but forcing the VBR 2 pass with 8,8,8 worked well, took about 45min to export 50 minutes of the video..and gave me the calculator's predicted file size to put on the DVD ( roughly 3.3 gig )...
Thanks for that calculator again, Harm
    Rod

    Hi you guys...thanks !!! for help...and advice
With regard to the m frames and n frames ( which I still don't get ....am totally confused )...I finally opened up the book I bought on mpeg compression...and started looking at the pictures....
I am like very into pictures and illustrations ..... and if it wasn't for the "classics" series of comics ( re: "The Fall Of The Roman Empire" etc)..I would never have graduated from 5th Grade.
Soooo, at least I can start getting into this book a little and see if it starts making sense...
Stan, Bill, Harm....did the AVI export ( 10 gig ) and didn't export audio. Used the wav file from previous export ( mpeg-dvd ) and stuck both in the DVD authoring program...  and they were the same "length" ....( hopefully in sync ) ...and I burned a DVD....which took FOREVER....the encoding part of it...couple hours almost...
However, it looks WAY better than the progressive burn...ESPECIALLY ON FAST PANS .....
Harm, I guess what you said about losing the one field , when camera pans fast, makes it more blurry on progressive conversion....  cause I see a pretty big difference in that ....
NOW...( Bill, your comment re: preview quality )...it seems to me that maybe when I was doing the original export and previewing, and seeing the horrible sawtoothing and horizontal lines, etc....that maybe if I had gone ahead and burned the DVD it would have been OK.....
So I'm sorta back where I started.   Now I have to start from the beginning....over again....export from CS3 as mpeg DVD, DO NOT LOOK AT PREVIEW ( PUT HANDS OVER EYES )....and burn the DVD and see what happens....
Geez....  there's so much to learn about all this...every " step" in the process....  It's kinda fascinating in a way...you know?  Very cool....to think you can actually do what guys were doing back in the 1930's....and get it onto a DVD successfully....  boggles the mind !

  • How to export in smaller widescreen format than p720?

How can I set presets in PE7 such, that the exported video has the same hight/widh as the original?
I am shooting with KodakZi8 WVGA modus, which is 16:9 but smaller than 720p. In PE7 I only found the option to set to "widescreen" in 720p. In manual presets the height/width fields are disabled. If I export with MPEG widescreen presets, the videos are blown up to 720p and get blurry.
Appreciate hints to FAQs and former threats, too (didn't found any, though)
    Niko

Video from a still cameras will likely need to be converted to a more traditional video codec before it can be successfully edited in Premiere Elements, per my books and the FAQs to the right of this forum.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
AVI files are likely MJPEG-AVIs, and they can be converted with Windows MovieMaker.
MOV files can be converted using Super or, better, Quicktime Pro.
Once your files have been converted to DV-AVIs, you can edit them in a project using the standard DV 16:9 project settings.

  • Exporting for non-widescreen TVs

I exported a video to MPEG2-DVD then burned it onto a DVD. It plays perfectly on my TV. The problem is, my in-laws have an old, non-widescreen TV and the video is cut off around the edges. Is there any way to export specifically for non-widescreen TVs or to play the DVD I already made on their TV without it getting cut off?

I have CS5 (and I'm not there at the moment) but memory tells me there are two MPEG2-DVD settings... Widescreen and regular... I always use widescreen because my video is HiDef widescreen... I will **guess** that if you select the regular export setting your video will be formatted for a 4:3 TV

  • My 4x3 footage looks squeezed on 16x9 dvd?

Making a 16x9 dvd with most of the tracks being 16x9. Some of the tracks are 4x3 and i have those tracks set to display as 4x3. When i use the simulator everything looks fine, BUT when i burn to dvd and view on a 16 x9 tv all my 4x3 footage is squeezed. Am i missing some setting in the export process?
    Using dvd SP 4.0.3
    iMac G4 1.25ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    The TV is 16x9.
The dvd player is set to 16x9.
The Dvd istself is a 16x9 dvd, BUT some of the tracks are 4x3. The 4x3 footage is marked as a 4x3 track.
Maybe im misunderstanding but i thought that my 4x3 footage should then appear on the above tv set up with black bars left and right of the image so that it appears unsqueezed, which it does so correctly in the simulator
As it stands now when the dvd is played on the above setup the 4x3 footage all appears stretched on the TV screen.

  • Export from FCP directly into DVD studio pro?

Is it possible to export from FCP directly into DVD studio pro? If not, what is the preferred file format because my exported quicktime files come up as "incompatible format" when I try to add them into my DVD project. Any help is appreciated.

You need to encode audio as well from Compressor. You'll have 2 files - audio and video.

Maybe the installation bits you are using is too old, but it looks like there's a maximum 8 character length for the directory.  The error you posted states:
    Warning: DBR3LOADEXEC_NT_MSS SetCmdDefaultForDatDirExt 2 722
    File: E:\DB_Expor\DATA\SAP0000.TOC not readable.
    Warning: DBR3LOADEXEC_NT_MSS SetCmdDefaultForDatDirExt 2 722
    File: E:\DB_Expor\DATA\SAPVIEW.TOC not readable
Is the directory name really "DB_Expor" (8 characters)?  Or is it actually "DB_Export" (9 characters)
I would try renaming the directory to just "Export" (6 characters) and restart the install.

  • In photoshop 10 when I export an album to a dvd I can't open it on my computer with windows 7 what do I do

IN photoshop 10 when I export an album to a dvd, I can't op@en it on my computer with windows 7. Help

The ! means that iPhoto cannot find the master or original file.
Assuming that these same photos behave correctly in the main library then it suggests the burn has gone wrong somewhere.
As a matter of interest... why are you burning libraries to DVD? If it's a form of back up then it's a dead end. Your next version of iPhoto won't be able termed or work with them, and your next Mac won't have an optical drive.

  • Export Project to loop on DVD Player

Hi, Can anyone help me. I need to know a simple way to export/save a project onto DVD which will play on any standard player and loop ?

IDVD has the loop feature under the advanced tab. You can also make the DVD play on insert on the map view menu if you need that.
IDVD is about as easy as you can get.

  • What is the best setting for export movie in widescreen format?

Please tell me what is the best setting for exporting movie in Widescreen format?

Like in After effect we use "NTSC D1 Widescreen Square Pixel".,
Carefully examine the codec and pixel dimensions of that output file. That's certainly easy for an experienced VFX person like yourself.
Then carefully look over the presets in FCP to find the same attibutes. You can also use the online help system for FCP and search for "D1"
However, your question remains unanswerable because we don't know how you're getting to the monitor. What are you playing back you AE sequences on that displays them on your LCD? You're assuming we know what you're doing and, I assure you, we do not.

The videos in question called: "25pf_1.25_f1.8.MTS" playback and export from Premiere as MPEG2-DVD very well.
I playbacked it on Premiere on the second Monitor as "OutputDevice". All Ok.
I playbacked also the DVD made with EncoreCS4, on the external DVD set-top-box-player. All OK.
I downloaded also another clip 1080p 25p, converted as .mp4, from the same author, imported then in Premiere with Preset "XDCAM EX 1080p 25p" (470MB) :
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=B9ZDX2RZ
    No problems with playback.
Exported as MPEG2-DVD PAL "Lower Field First".
Opened in NeroShowTime Player: the video have a serious interruptions of the playback, some moments plays back-and-forward, and it isn't fluid at all!
I tried to create a DVD with EncoreCS4 and played it with DVD Player set-top-box, and the result is bad, and is the same as the playback on my PC with NeroShowTime Player. It present the back-and-forwars interruptions.

  • Exporting HD Footage to SD DVD and WEB

I am working with HDV footage and DVCPROHD footage within FCP 7. I am having trouble with the quality of my movies when I export the movies to SD DVD and to the web.
Here's what I have tried. From FCP I export a quicktime movie then I take that into compressor. From compressor I have tried the DVD Best 90 min and the result is bad.
I am using an mp4 setting for Vimeo and YouTube, and the quality isn't too bad, but my files are still large and it takes forever to upload.
If someone has suggestions on the best way to encode in compressor for SD DVD and for Vimeo and Youtube, I would appreciate it.
    Cody

You are still a bit vague. Different people have differing ideas as to what is good.
It may be that you are expecting too much and you may already be getting the best that's available.
Without seeing your results it is difficult to comment.
Regarding your DVDs, if your movie is under 65 minutes long you can probably tweak the quality by modifying the existing pre-set to give a CBR (Constant Bit Rate) of 7.5Mbps and change Multi-pass to Single-pass.
This will give you the highest possible quality in only half the encoding time. However, the improvement won't be startling but the time saving will be very welcome!

  • Exporting DVCproHD project to SD DVD with flicker issue

I've got a FCP project in DVCproHD format and I want to export it to use in DVD studio Pro for a standard Definition DVD. When I make the DVD, it keeps giving me a flicker, no doubt due to the upper/lower field issue inherent in HD/SD conversion.
So....what do I do to remove the flicker?
I tried changing the preference in DVD SP, but it didn't help.
Message was edited by: Rob Lichter

My sequence is DVCpro HD 1080i60. It's about 97 minutes long. I did a 5 second test with some compressor settings which yielded good results, but when I set the entire show to export with those settings, it said it would take 800 hours. I let it go a long weekend but when I came back in it had over 600 hours still left to go. I finally stopped it, adjusted the quality settings slightly (changed better to good, etc.) and tried again. Flicker came back.
What I seem to be seeing is that in order for the flicker to be gone, the Compressor settings need to be set so high that the exporting time is unreasonable.

  • Export Project to Auto-Play DVD in CS4?

I'm trying to burn a DVD of my project. I don't want to author any menus and I just want a simple auto-play DVD of my finished timeline.
I don't see any "Export to Encore" option like in CS3. I have tried Export>Media and choosing MPEG2-DVD. However, this only loads the Media Encoder Queue and gives me no burning options.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

I've used the version of Premiere your talking about (pre-Encore) and your right, very limited.
However, I'm refering to the fact that CS3 (utilizing the File>ExportToEncore command) would automaticaly launch the program and burn the disc for you.
Yes, I used the 2.0 feature quite a bit.  For my in depth authoring, I used DVDit Pro (um, yeh, that's right, I didn't do any in depth authoring back then).  Forget that it was limited (it did not even open Encore), it was very automatic.  And I hear you; when I moved to CS3, I really missed having that feature for testing DVD output, and for some finals (but not many).  I did not think the CS3 setting was automatic enough, but I was hooked on having even a simple menu, so I rarely used the quick CS3 option - hey, I had Encore.
But as a practical matter, what are you really losing?  And don't forget the parts of CS3 that were not automatic that are now.  For the kind of quick option you are doing, you must be okay with Encore's automatic transcode setting, right?
CS3 required you to set the  transcode settings, name the file that would be exported, and remember to put a disk in the drive!
CS4 requires you to dynamic link to Encore, name the Encore project, (it creates the timeline and sets it as first play), and click the build tab and burn (yeh, after remembering to put a disk in the drive).
Anyway, if you're the only one that submits a feature request, Adobe is not going to think that adding this feature back is going to be worth it.  If there are a bunch who do, they take more notice and look at what their "cost" is to do so.
