Exporting Format for Final Cut

I have been sent someone's home video on a DVD. I ripped it from the DVD and now want to send it to FCP to edit with some other DV footage. In the quicktime inspector, it is saying that the ripped file is:
h.264 720x480 (853x480) ---- 29.97 fps ----- data size 787.89 mb ----2117.86 kbits/s
All I was trying to do was convert this file to DV so that I could easily edit it in FCP. When I tell quicktime to export, the progress bar in the export window hardly moves at all -- in fact I came back a few hours later and it said "failed" due to the "disk is full". This doesn't make any sense because I have over 30 gigs available on my disk. I assume I am doing something very wrong here. Is there anyone who can tell me how to take the video file described above, and export it to be edited in an FCP sequence with other DV video? Thanks.

Excellent info fellas. Sorry, I have been gone for the past two days -- some of the information I understood, some not so much. For the record, all I am trying to do is convert the .vob file (i guess that's what it is) on the DVD to a video file that I can edit on my DV/NTSC timeline in FCP. As a curiosity, I just took MPEG Streamclip and used it to convert whatever file it is that I am converting from the DVD to a .dv file which I then imported into FCP. The movie was captured on some sort of an HD camcorder, so it is in 16:9, but otherwise everything is matched to my FCP sequence. In fact when I control click it in the FCP timeline, it is saying that its format is 29.97, DV/DVCPRO, 6.9 MB/sec, with a pixel aspect of NTSC - CCIR 601. But when I load it into the viewer, it has black bars above and below it and is definitely in a 16:9 aspect - this is enough to confuse the heck out of me. Either way, I have to render the movie when it is in the timeline, but the quality is real nice and it should work for the 20 seconds or so that I need of it. Either way, I am confused about the discussion about the MPEG - 2 conversion. Colin, the Apple product that you mention, is that meant to convert the .vob file on the actual DVD to MPEG -2 so that then it can be converted further using MPEG Streamclip to something that is useable in FCP? Any further clarification would be excellent. Sorry, I am still new to this format/codec conversion game and am trying to read and learn all I can to make this a little less painful in the future. Anyhoo, you guys are great and thanks for the info thus far.
If it would help, here is a more straight-forward hypothetical question:
If you had an FCP sequence that was DV/DVCPRO NTSC 720x480 29.97 and you needed to put a small movie clip into it that just happened to be coming from a buddy's DVD that he gave to you - and the video on that DVD was obviously shot on a consumer-grade HD camcorder (16:9), what would you do to make this work?? Thanks again.

  • Help. What format is best to export to for Final Cut Pro editing from PPCS5?

Ok. So I really have no experience with Final Cut. After reading online for an hour about what formats to use, I was still left with no clear answer and confused. Here's my issue: I have 1080i 60i .tod files from my JVC ready to be batch exported from CS5 Encoder, I need a format that will be read and able to be edited on Final Cut Pro without issue.
Could someone with Final Cut experience please chime in:
    What should I use exactly?
    Greatly appreciated,
    Nick

Are you using Premiere on the same Mac that FCP is on? If so, your best format choice is QuickTime and codec choice would be ProRes422. If, however, you're on a different Mac or on a PC instead, I'd suggest QuickTime with the freely available, cross-platform Avid codecs. You'd probably want to use DNxHD, in that case.
The Avid codecs are great because, well, they're free, but more importantly, they're available for both decoding AND encoding on Mac and PC. ProRes, on the other hand, only has an encoding component for Mac, and it has to have FCP installed on it.

  • Audio upsampling in Quicktime Pro: Best export settings for Final Cut?

I'm using Quicktime Pro to convert audio from 32 kHz to 48 kHz, for use in FCE/FCP. Quicktime gives me several options for export settings. I want to make the conversion lossless, without increasing the size of the audio file too much.
These are the settings I'm using so far:
    Format: Linear PCM
    Channels: Stereo (L R)
    Rate: 48 kHz
Sample Rate Converter Settings: Quality: Best
Linear PCM Settings: Sample size: 16 bits
Are these settings the best choices? Does anyone have experience doing this kind of upsampling?
Here are the other options in Quicktime:
    Format: Linear PCM, A-Law 2:1, IMA 4:1, MACE 3:1, MACE 6:1, QDesign Music 2, Qualcomm PureVoice, and mu-Law 2:1
Channels: 2 Discrete Channels, Mono, Stereo (L R)
Rate: there are other choices, but I know 48 kHz is what I want
    Advanced Settings:
Sample Rate Converter Settings: Faster, Fast, Normal, Better, Best
Linear PCM Settings (when Linear PCM is the format): 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit, 32 bit (floating point checked), 32 bit (floating point unchecked).
The file size grows quickly as you increase the Linear PCM bit settings.

You can't create something that is not in the file.
Moving from 32kHz to 48 will only make the file size
larger and can't improve the audio.
Doesn't FCP or FCE import your file at 32. Or does it
change it to 48 after import?
I am aware that increasing the audio from 32 kHz to 48 kHz will not improve the quality of the audio. And yes, Final Cut Pro and Express will both capture and allow you to work witih 32 kHz audio.
I have several hours of video shot with 32 kHz audio settings that I'd prefer to have stored on disk with 48 kHz audio, because (a) some applications like iMovie have demonstrated problems with 32 kHz audio in the past, and (b) the majority of my video is shot with 48 kHz audio, so my 32 kHz video will eventually end up in a 48 kHz project, leaving the upsampling to Final Cut. Yes, I do eventually plan to burn my projects to DVD as well, but this isn't an immediate concern.
The problem with doing the conversion in Final Cut is this: Some of the people knowledgeable about Final Cut Pro and Express recommend doing the upsampling using Quicktime or another application, instead of using Final Cut, because Final Cut may not do as good a job as Quicktime. So my intention is to upsample the audio now in preparation for later projects. I don't completely understand why Final Cut wouldn't do as good of a job at upsampling, but a couple of experienced users in the FCP and FCE forums have independently corroborrated this.
Thanks to everyone for their helpful posts and responsiveness.

  • Exporting Clips for Final Cut

I have a client who has captured 120gig worth of footage in iMovie hoping that I'd be able to get at it in Final Cut. The only problem is that iMovie keep all clips within the project file and don't have a separate folder of clips like the capture scratch in Final Cut. I'm pretty sure older versions on iMovie did not embed the clips in the project file either.
Is there a way to export all the clips from the project file so that they can be individually imported into Final Cut?
    Ta.
    Dave.

    Hello Sheer Image,
I have a client who has captured 120gig worth of footage in iMovie hoping that I'd be able to get at it in Final Cut.
Man, that guy must hate you .... or you him by now .... 120 GB, whoa
    But to answer your question:
ctrl - click the iMovie project and choose "Show package contents" from the dropdown menu. Next navigate to the Media folder. Here you'll find all the captured clips. The problem is that you'll have to copy all the clips to a different location in order to access them one by one.
I seem to recall that FCE/FCP is able to import whole iMovie projects as well, but that is something I've never tried (also I work with FCE 2, so this might be of no help to you). You might want to check the Final Cut board on this.
    hope this helps

  • OMF won't export out of final cut pro.

5 second handles tried 2 second handles as well.
OMF won't export out of final cut pro. Get error message there is a 2 gb limit.
    Final cut 6.0.6
Have deadline. Didn't see it on any forum. Help!! Thanks!!

Seems like a weird thing to not be able to do since it's called final cut PRO...
Bagging on Final Cut Pro for OMF? HA! OMF has been around LONG BEFORE FCP was introduced. It isn't an FCP issue...OMF technology is VERY old. Over 20 years I believe. I used it on Avid...and it always had a 20GB limit.
You cannot deliver 1 track via OMF. You can ask the audio person. I know that Avid now allows you to export an AAF...but FCP doesn't do AAF. For embedded audio I think that OMF is the only way. SO you have to work within the limitations of that format.

  • Codec for Final Cut Pro

I am converting a DVCPro video tape using a tape copy service (my tape drive died). I plan to import the DVD file into our PowerMac with Final Cut Pro 5.0 to break the DVD file into smaller modules. I can have the service create either a compressed .AVI file (DivX or Cinepak codec) or a compressed .FLV file. My video editor would prefer an AVI file as he is more familiar with that format.
Which of these files would be best to use? For the .AVI file, which codec? I am unfamiliar with what codec my equipment uses, and can't seem to find it anywhere in my documentation.

AVI is a container, just like .mov. The video inside can be any one of a number of codecs.
Final Cut Pro does not work with DivX, CinePak or FLV.
You need your file as a .mov using one of the codecs found in FCP's Easy Setup menu.
Do not use an outside facility. Hire a deck and capture in Final Cut Pro. Capturing on a different NLE and exporting a format that Final Cut Pro does not natively work with is fraught with problems and asking for trouble. It will only cost more money, more time and end in tears.

  • Quicktime Export Components in Final Cut Server

Our company has purchased a number of Elgato h264 encoders and we're loving them. They reduce our h264 compression times on average from 15-20 mins down to 2-3 mins. It usually compresses our videos faster than real time. Which as a news organization is great for us. These encoders work great on all our Macbook Pros & Mac Pro systems. I've now installed one onto our final cut server and set up a custom compressor setting. Under the 'encoder' tab the file format had to be set to "Quicktime Export Components" instead of "Quicktime Movie" to use the Elgato. And it works great when I send a single file threw compressor. BUT I can't get this custom preset to show up or work inside Final Cut Server. I have other custom settings that do show up and work (but they are all "Quicktime Movie" file formats). I've rebooted multiple times and looked under multiple Responses transcode settings, but the new one I've created to use the Elgato never shows up.
Is it possible to use Quicktime Export Components in Final Cut Server?
I couldn't find any mention of this in the FCS admin manual or any other posts in the forums regarding this.

I have seen on MediaSilo.com a tip to get Elgato H.264 working with Compressor, but I can't seem to be able to find it. Basically, the trick was to create a duplicate setting in Compressor that Final Cut Server is able to read ( not as Quicktime Export Component), associate it with a Final Cut Server's compression setting and later reassign that setting in Compressor to Elgato.
I will keep diggin' for this tip, it was actually a screen recording.

  • Command to Export project as Final Cut Pro XML from jsx script

    Hi All,
Can somebody get me the command to export the project as final cut pro xml from jsx script.
    I was using the extension builder script earlier for cs6 panel development, so we were using pjct.exportFinalCutProXML("pathname");
Now I am working for panel in Premiere CC so working on HTML 5 panel and qe dom scripting(.jsx).
In some jsx examples i got there is script to export sequence as final cut pro xml but cannot get the code for project export.
    project.activeSequence.exportAsFinalCutProXML(entire_out_path);
Also please let me know if there are any kind of reference available about all the functions and properties in the pe dom scripting for premiere pro cc.
I am using premiere pro cc 7.1, windows 7, Eclipse Kepler.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anoop NR

When you reimport the exported project XML to FCP, do you get the full project or just the single bin/sequence? If you get the full project then it sounds like you need Premiere help, not FCP help ... have you tried asking on the Adobe forums? If you only get the single bin/sequence then it seems you might have inadvertently selected those prior to creating the project export. Try making sure that your FCP Browser window is active and that you have not selected anything within that window prior to using the File > Export > XML command. If that still causes issue then you might try using an earlier FCP XML version.
    Hope it helps

  • Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro Now Available...

There's been so much talk about the 5D, 7D, 550D on this board that I'm going to point to the EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro. This is supposed to speed to transcode of Canon Camera H.264 to FCP-friendly formats and let you add more metadata along the way.
    Enjoy!
Canon webpage. Under Drivers & Downloads. Once you select your OS, "Mac OS X", the download should appear near the top of the "Software" list.
    Note: (from Quickstart Guide)
This plug-in software allows you to convert MOV movies shot with an EOS Digital camera into ProRes files at high speed in the (Log & Transfer) window of Apple's Final Cut Pro.
FWIW: The quick start guide says cameras involved are 7D, 5D, 1D, no mention of 550D. Sort of odd.

For users in North America to make the Canon EOS REBEL T2i work (550D for Europe):
    1. Install the new Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...nloadDetailAct)
    2. Go to Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/Plugins/CanonE1.RADPLug/Contents/Resources/
    2. Open up cameras.plist
    3. After the 7D info add the following lines of code (keeping to the coding structure):
    <key>T2i</key>
    <array>
    <string>Canon EOS REBEL T2i</string>
    </array>
    4. Save the text file. Close it. Everything should work now.
    Cheerz.

  • Following Media Files Are Not Optimized For Final Cut Pro

I'm sure you've seen this before and I've tried to search for a thread on it here and fell asleep, so sorry if this is a repeat.
I have edited projects in Premiere Pro (on my PC) and I have tried to transfer them in FCP. It worked with the exception of two things:
    1. the error message, "Following Media Files Are Not Optimized For Final Cut Pro"
    2. the quality *****! watching it on the playback in FCP it looks great, but then when I burn it to Disc it's pixelated in spots and generally has a lower quality picture.
I know that it's Standard Def. and can't expect the best, but I've done it before (once or twice) and it didn't seem this bad.
Can someone suggest anything to help the quality? Should I run my AVIs through MPEG Steamclip to make it a QT file and if so what is the best format in that since there are many to choose from and most I'm not familiar with?
    Thank you,
    Crayton

I did compress them to DV NTSC then burned it to DVD and the result was no bueno.
I thought what I would do is try compressing them again before I send them on over to DVDSPRO. Here is a simplified break down of the situation:
    - I have edited the raw footage in Premiere Pro on my PC. They were recorded and captured as SD.
    - I rendered them in Premiere, then transfered the rendered AVI file to FCP.
    - When went to place the files in FCP, I received the warning message; "Following Media Files Are Not Optimized For Final Cut Pro" but I went forward anyways and it allowed me to do so.
    - Originally I went ahead and compressed them from FCP to QT Movie as a DV NTSC, which ended up poorly.
    - Therefore my question is, should I compress them using another file type (other then DV NTSC)? Which leads me to another program that I have called MPEG Streamclip, which offers tons of file types of which I am unfamiliar with most. I want the best quality of course but don't know what file type is the highest going from AVI to a format that can be accepted by FCP and ultimately DVDSPRO. Keeping in mind that I only have FCP5 and do not have Prores.
    Did that make sense?
    Thank you again,
    Crayton

  • Plugins for Final Cut Pro X

It looks like Final Cut Pro X does not support import or export of FCXML. My company wrote a plugin that appears under the import, export menu using a Final Cut Pro provate API we had to sign an NDA for.
We now need to rewrite for Final Cut Pro X. Who can we contact to answer our questions?
ps: I'm part of both the Mac and iOS developer programs yet I don't see any forums or developer information for this...
    best,
    Tuviah

no it was another plugin API that I got from Apple to develop plugins such as the one by YouSendIt, or EVS, or Automated Duck which allows adding a menu item to the FCP import and export menus.
Unfortunately the Apple contacts we had 3 years ago, such as Adam Green, who gave us these APIs no longer work there or are not responding.
I've actually tried using my technical incidents to get answers but keep getting told that I need to ask the final cut pro team without so much as an email or other link.
so I'm REALLY REALLY hoping someone at Apple is monitoring this list and can help out. Or perhaps another plugin developer.
I would think Apple would want to make it easy for 3rd parties to integrate..

  • Change for final cut pro HD from Pinnacle Studio 10

    Hello,
After lots of problems with Pinnacle Studio 10 (windoooooows.....) I finally chose to change for final cut pro HD on Mac OS 10.3.9
So far so good, I did lots of tutorials to learn but there is one very remarkable thing I really miss. Maybe there is just a thing in my configuration to fix...
Is it possible to view a part of a movie without randering it after every simple change? It must be technically possible because studio does it for years now, even with overlays.
Because I just upgraded my ibook with lots of RAM just to try out final cut for the moment, everything runs fine but rendering does take a few minutes/hours.... Well it is ok just to try out maybe I would get a macbook pro if final cut would assure me.
    I feel like cutting blind!
Studio renders right before exporting, this may take a few hours but I would do this during night...
As I said, maybe its all my fault and I just have to change some configurations....
    thanks for help
    Fabi

Make sure your RT settings (upper left menu in the timeline) is set to UNLIMITED RT. This means that the render settings will be adjusted to play back at the best resolution they can without rendering. You might get a green render bar or orange render bar. If you get a red render bar, that means that you have a filter or two that isn't RT and requires a render, or you have too many layers to allow for RT playback.
If you simply drop a raw clip into the timeline and have to render, that means something is wrong. Your clip settings and sequence settings don't match. You need to choose an Easy Setup that matches your footage, then create a new sequence.
