Express 500 - IP Telephony problem

Hi, i have a problem in a site that is in a mine, there are under extreme conditions, the site is 3000 meters over the sea level. There are deployed 9 catalyst express 500 and unti yesterday all was ok, suddenly the calls begin to drop down between calls in the site and over the link (satellite) to the other site. Also, the ip phones can not stay registered to the call manager, they are booting continuosly.
Any suggestion or maybe you need more inforation.
Thanks in advanced ...
Jose

What's the IOS version you're using on the CAT 500? Have you configured a flat VLAN for everything or used the Cisco-Voice VLAN for the PC+IP Phone smartports??
I'd also check the 'status' to which you've assigned the Call Manager Server (Should be set to Trusted to give it the necessary QoS).

  • Catalyst Express 500 series connection problems

Hello! our company is currently using two 500 series switch connected to eachother using the g1/1000mbits port, a cisco router is also plugged in to one of the switches for broadband internet access. After deployment the following problems came up, we are unable to use our wireless access point even when the port is set up as being "access point" using the smartports feature, we simply cant ping the access point no matter what port type we set on the switch and we keep having the error message on the router that it has denied connection from that device, my feeling is that for some reason i'm not aware of the router is blocking certain devices to transfer data no matter what type of port we define on the smartports feature. I cant find anyway or option on the router software to disable this blocking or filtering of the data in order to connect any devices i want normally without any restrictions. for some reason the switch is not accepting connections from the access point...
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, well, i did disabled STP but it didnt help, i'm going to post the network topology more exactely and the settings being used so its easier to get any help as i think i missed some points about our network :) ....so here it goes :
    1. All the devices and client computers are using fixed ip addresses on the range 192.168.254.x
    2. Topology :
    Switch number 1 connected devices:
    17 client computers connected
    1 printer
1 cisco router (with dhcp disabled and using fixed ip too)
1 Netgear AP using set with DHCP
    Switch number 2 connected devices:
    10 client computer connected
Switch 1 and 2 are connected using the G1/1000mbits uplink port
Settings being used on BOTH switches (they are both catalyst 500,same software version) :
    - default vlan1 is set and enabled
    - STP enabled
    - IGMP snooping enabled
    - all ports are enabled and set to auto mode for speed and duplex
    - port Gi1 that is used to connect both switches is set as "Switch" type with smartports.
    - gateway (cisco router) ip address set
    - security set to "low"
    - STP settings on switch 1:
currents roots: VLAN1 , priority:32768 , root port: fa24 (where the router is connected), route path:38
    - STP settings on switch 2:
    currents roots: VLAN1 , priority:32768 , root port: Gi1 (uplink to switch 1), route path:42
    switch 1 specific settings:
    - the port where the AP is connected is set using smartports as "Access Point" and the port where the printer is connected is set as "Printer" also using smartports on the switch device manager software.
    - the port where the cisco router is connected is set as "router" with smartports
    Facts:
    - I am able to ping all the devices on the network from any computers connected to both switches.
    - I am able to ping the printer from any computer connected to both switches as well.
    - When AP is connected directly to the cisco router wireless clients have access to internet with no problems
    - all wired client computers on both switches connect to the internet using the router without problems.
    Issues:
    - Cannot ping the AP from any client computer on the network
    - When printing from Switch 1 clients everything goes well, but when i print from clients on Switch 2 i am unable to print as its unable to connect to the printer, however i can ping the printer on the command-line !
    - When i try to plug in the network cable from the AP to its designated port on Switch 1 the network crashes !
    Error messages:
When trying to print from clients on Switch 2 or when try to connect and use AP on switch 1 i get or "access denied to device connecting to portxx" or i get an STP blocking error .
Hope the picture is clearer now.
    thanks once more.
    Fernando.

  • Catalyst Express 500 series trunking problem

We have a cisco 2801 router and CExpress500 switch. The router is connected to switch over the port role "switch" and native vlan no is 1. The router is configured as this:
    interface FastEthernet0/0
    no ip address
    duplex auto
    speed auto
    interface FastEthernet0/0.1
    encapsulation dot1Q 1 native
    ip address 192.168.110.4 255.255.255.0
    no snmp trap link-status
    interface FastEthernet0/0.184
    description vlan184
    encapsulation dot1Q 184
    ip address 192.168.184.1 255.255.255.0
    no snmp trap link-status
Users can reach the native vlan but they cant reach other vlan. Any comment?

The port on the CE500 should be set as a router, otherwise DHCP from/through the router will not work. Setting the port as "trunking" is not possible on a CE500 switch; you must choose predefined smartport types.
Set up your router port as a Dot1Q interface with sub-interfaces and make sure the native VLAN matches on both devices.

  • POE for Aironet 1131 on Catalyst Express 500

    Hi all,
we are using 3 AP Aironet 1131 (Version 12.4(10b)JA3) in a WDS. All are connected to a Switch Catalyst Express 500 to receive their Power. The Problem is they work for some time and the the AP reloads without further errormessage.
Speed and Duplex mode are fixed on Switch and AP-Side. Does anybody now this problem or can give me a hint?
    Thanks in Advance
    Alex

This can happen if power settings are configured incorrectly on the AP. Ensure that the correct parameters are configured. Here is a link which explains how to configure power on APs.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/12.3_2_JA/configuration/guide/s32frst.html#wp1103896
Also, try disabling CDP and check if you are seeing the issue again.

  • AP1200 and Switch Cisco Express 500

    Hi,
We have an AP1200 (port 1) attached to a switch cisco express 500,in this switch we are using a Vlan and we have a DHCP server.
The problem is when a new PC tries to connect to this AP, it takes to much time to assign the IP address, and in other cases the PC is disconnected from the System constantly. Do you know wich could be the problem ?

It sounds like it could be a problem with your wireless signal - have your tried doing a carrier busy test on the AP to check for interference?

  • Catalyst Express 500 - Cannot configure

I just reset the Catalyst Express 500 (WS-CE500-24TT V01) switch back to factory default by using the directions “Recover the Switch Software” in the manual.
After rebooting I cannot get to into the Setup Windows. It does not come up, either automatically or typing a URL in Internet Explorer. I went thru the trouble shooting section on the manual and I am having no luck.
Originally when I set up the switch and I was able to get to the Setup window thru Internet Explorer, however the configuration did not save properly or seemed so. After I configured and rebooted I could not access the management screen using IE.
I rebooted hit the setup button and then could not get in, I even typed a domain name such as cisco.com, this also did not work. I reset the switch as stated above to factory default. I have Pop-up blocker off, no firewall is on.
Do you have any ideas on how to resolve the problem? Bottom line I cannot get into the management console to configure the switch.

    Hello,
this is just a guess, but if you are using IE6, you might want to install the Microsoft Virtual Machine, you can download it at
    www.craftof.com/VirtualMachine.asp
Uncheck the Sun Java VM in IE6...
Regarding the recovery procedure, did you use exactly the one described below ?

  • Very Slow Uplink Port Express 500

We have a Cisco Express 500 with two 1GBit Uplink ports.
These 2 Ports are connected to Win2k3 Servers.
The Clients are connected to the 100 MBit Ports of the switch.
Now the problem is that we have a very bad speed from the Servers to the Clients.
The speed from the Clients to the Server is OK.
The speed between the two 1 GBit ports (Servers) is in both directions OK.
The speed between clients is in both directions OK, too.

Before researching on this issue, I would like to know the following.
    1. Are the connections to all the clients from the server is slow?. Or else, only to particular clients?. Are all the clients having the same OS?. Also let me know the following.
    1. The GBIC/NIC card used in the switch, server and client.
    2. The OS used in your clients.
    3. How many clients you have in your network connecting to that particular server?.

  • Need that a Cisco Catalyst Express 500 behaves as cheap switch

Need that a Cisco Catalyst Express 500 behaves as  cheap switch.
I happen to have a surplus of CE500 and i need to use one as a layer 2 cheap switch (unaware of lan and with port protection off).
    How can i achive this?

That's the thing, i'm sitting on several CE500, i'm not allowed to buy a cheap one right now, i have to use what i have, i know is too much but it should work and i read that it does, there is only one problem, i need to plug a access point to the CE500 that connect this section of my network to the rest.
I can't make the CE500 to work with this AP, a cheap switch i had there before worked properly.

  • IP telephony problem in a big shop | Need your help

    Hello everybody,
I have an issue to solve regarding an IP telephony problem. My company will send me to France to fix this problem. But most of my knowledge are in routing and switching, I have almost no knowledge in IP telephony ( Theory only). I think the problem is not really difficult but I still need your advices to know where to start and what to do.
Futher down is a summary of the e-mails I received from the shop in France from the employees who are working there. France Telecom is the ISP.
1 e-mail:The problem is the connection between the ISDN lines provided by France Telecom and the IPBX installed by our shop.
2 e-mail:The problem isn't the physical line itself. The problem is that they ( France telecom) do not route all the numbers out to the ISDN line they installed. The number ending with 1212 get routed to the ISDN NT and that number actually works. But the rest of the number series does not get terminated in that ISDN NT. Calling those other number result in an error message being read in French. That can only come from France Telecom.
3 e-mail:We cannot solve this problem because it is not the system which has an error. Carl has been in Bordeaux and has checked the ISND line at that is working, but the number series for Bordeaux is missing in the system from France Telecom, the only existing number is 1212. The rest of the numbers are missing for French Telecom and is therefore not working. Either we have been informed of a wrong number series +33 5 34 32 12 04 to 13 or France Telecom has not delivered what they should.
4 e-mail:I checked again with France Telecom and they confirmed that everything is delivered and ok from their side.
    They gave us the number series +33 5 34 32 12 04 to 13 with main number (headnumber) is +33 5 34 32 12 12 (exactly as in Paris where we are n° series from +33 1 53 25 13 70 to +33 1 53 25 13 89 with the headnumber is +33 1 53 25 13 70).
That's the reason why you find only the +33 5 34 32 12 12 arriving into the IPBX, it's because you then have to program in our IPBX the other n° we want to use (+33 5 34 32 12 04/ 05/ 06/ 07/ …10/ 13/…) within the number series granted by France Telecom.
But this can be done only by us because we installed our own IPBX.
5 e-mail:Even though the other numbers aren't programmed into the IPBX, we should still get some sort of ISDN Layer 1 activity when calling one of the other numbers (fx. the 07number). That never happens, which means the numbers are somehow impeded from France Telecom.
When we call one of the number, we get an error message in French. If the traffic was hitting the IPBX, then that couldn't happen. That speak originates from France Telecom and we have never gotten any explanation as to why it's even there.
I will really apreciate your help. Where do you think the problem comes from? Is that really France Telecom whose empeded the series number(do not route the numbers)? What should I check/do, configure?
Thanks a lot for your help to all of you.

  • I need online Configuration Guide for Catalyst Express 500 Series Switches

    Hi Mates,
Please is there an online help page for 500 series catalyst
I have this one for IOS 12.2(25)FY http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6545/products_configuration_example09186a00806da6c9.shtml
but I need more detailes like IOS 12.3(7)JA for Aironet 1300 http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5861/products_configuration_guide_book09186a00804ebd50.html
    Regards
    Saher

I'm afraid there is not such document for IOS 12.2(25)FY since the Catalyst Express 500 Series switches are manageable through the GUI Device Manager or Cisco Network Assistant.
I have also found key features and standards supported for that release:

  • 802.1X and CAT Express 500

    Hi guys,
I want to know if the Cat Express 500 support dynamic vlan assigment through 802.1X.

    Hi,
You can do the vlan arrisgnment using 802.1x on CE500. The configuration for 802.1X and Radius authentication server can be done with the help of Cisco Network Assistant (CNA). In the menu Network Security Settings you have to put the
security level on high. There is the possibility to configure the IP address of the RADIUS server and the RADIUS key.
In case you don?t have the CNA, you can download it for free from:

  • Cat express 500 and AP´s

I have 1 1200 AP, 1 Cat express 500, 1 7920 ip phone and a notebook. How do i configure the switch port so that i can have different wireless vlans for voice and for data?
For the phone to join an ssid it must be an infrastructure one. For the ssid to be infrastructure, the vlan must be native. I can´t choose the native vlan in the cat express 500, only the vlan 1 can be native and that is not my voice vlan!
With other switches this works just fine......Any suggestions of how to configure it????

Basically at this stage with the Cat 500, there is no way to assign a port natively to the "Cisco-Voice" VLAN. Basically cisco screwed up completely here, and I believe will fix this in a future software update.
However as a workaround you can ignore completely the Cisco-Voice VLAN, create a new VLAN (I used VLAN3) and assign this to the port for the 1200AP. Change the smartport role for each "IP phone & Desktop" to "Switch" - this allows a trunk between phone & Cat500 and will allow the phone to communicate on VLAN3 with the AP (if you set phone to VLAN3)
EDIT - Sorry I just re-read your message and it sounds like you need to set-up the port to the AP as a SWITCH, because you want multiple VLANS on the wireless - sorry not familiar with this AP, but using 'switch' should trunk the VLANs no bother as long as the AP supports it.

    Inline power (PoE)
Can some one confirm PoE Spec's and a little confused reading the spe'c
    the spec say
●All 24 PoE ports on the Cisco Catalyst Express 500-24PC can supply up to 15.4W
(IEEE 802.3af standard maximum) of power over Category 5 cable, for a total of 370W

    ● Both the IEEE 802.3af PoE standard and Cisco prestandard inline power are supported
I have cisco 7940G witch are Prestandard so this switch will power the Phones on PoE ?
does not say it will supply PoE for Prestandard Phones just say its Supported
    Thanks

    Hi Colin,
Yes, the switch will power prestandard 7940s. Specs state it works on both 802af and cisco prestandard poe.
