802.1X and CAT Express 500
Hi guys,
I want to know if the Cat Express 500 support dynamic vlan assigment through 802.1X.
Hi,
You can do the vlan arrisgnment using 802.1x on CE500. The configuration for 802.1X and Radius authentication server can be done with the help of Cisco Network Assistant (CNA). In the menu Network Security Settings you have to put the
security level on high. There is the possibility to configure the IP address of the RADIUS server and the RADIUS key.
In case you don?t have the CNA, you can download it for free from:

Cat express 500 and AP´s
I have 1 1200 AP, 1 Cat express 500, 1 7920 ip phone and a notebook. How do i configure the switch port so that i can have different wireless vlans for voice and for data?
For the phone to join an ssid it must be an infrastructure one. For the ssid to be infrastructure, the vlan must be native. I can´t choose the native vlan in the cat express 500, only the vlan 1 can be native and that is not my voice vlan!
With other switches this works just fine......Any suggestions of how to configure it????Basically at this stage with the Cat 500, there is no way to assign a port natively to the "Cisco-Voice" VLAN. Basically cisco screwed up completely here, and I believe will fix this in a future software update.
However as a workaround you can ignore completely the Cisco-Voice VLAN, create a new VLAN (I used VLAN3) and assign this to the port for the 1200AP. Change the smartport role for each "IP phone & Desktop" to "Switch" - this allows a trunk between phone & Cat500 and will allow the phone to communicate on VLAN3 with the AP (if you set phone to VLAN3)
EDIT - Sorry I just re-read your message and it sounds like you need to set-up the port to the AP as a SWITCH, because you want multiple VLANS on the wireless - sorry not familiar with this AP, but using 'switch' should trunk the VLANs no bother as long as the AP supports it. -
802.11n and Airport Express iTunes Base station Help me ?
I'll try to keep this simple :
In my Office I have a 24" iMac Intel and the
802.11n resides also in my Office
About 40ft away is my Den which resides:
My MacBook Pro 17" Intel and a Airport Express iTunes
Base Station
Going Back to the 802.11n I have a 2.0 USB AC Powered
Hub connected to the USB port on the back of the 802.11n
of which said is OK to do
Connected to the USB on the back of the 802.11n:
is a Epson R200 USB InkJet Printer and also on that
Hub is a Lacie Porche 500gb External USB Hard Drive
Again says is Ok to do
The problem I'm having is that the Cable Modem is
in my Office and is connected via Ethernet to the 802.11n
and I can get a strong connection to the internet
on my iMac 24" Intel in my Office but the MBP 17"
in my Den is having issues getting onto the Internet
now about a week ago I spent 8hrs on the phone W/Apple
about such issues so we erased all the information in
the Disk Utility and started over with the information
in the 802.11n and the iTunes Base Station Express
this has helped until the recent FirmWare Update that
Apple Released a few days ago,
I've tried to actual bring my MBP 17" into the Office
and it gets a better Internet signal than in the Den,
but this wasn't the way it was before the FirmWare Update
Any Suggestions on what I can do to fix this situation
As all worked well with the Express iTunes in the Den
and the 802.11n in the Office and the Cable Modem has
always been in the Office ?
P.S> One problem I forgot to mention is I keep dropping
The Macbook Pro 17" and a Lacie 400gb Hard Drive which is
connected directly to the MBP 17" USB Port which keeps
dropping from my iMac 24" networking it will be working
fine and then I get a message stating that either or both
the MBP 17" and the Lacie Disk (400gb) is Disconnecting
from iMac 24" and then the same will happen on the
MBP 17" with the iMac 24" and any connected drives I'm
sharing from the iMac 24" ?
I'm having a connection problem and I can't get to the
bottom of it and I need some help please
Feel free to email me [email protected]Updates fixed issue closed question

AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Airport Express
I wonder...
I do relase reading other posts that connecting my Airport Express as a client, joining my 802.11n (and 54g compatible network) will slow the whole network down.
But I can't do without the airport express, and I don't want to slow down my WAN 100 MBit internet connection either.
Is there a way to split the networks WITHOUT having to switch to the Airport Express-network when I want to play to the Express in iTunes? Has anyone tried some working configs of how to combine these two in a good way?Saw a recent post just now...I guess the only solution would be to connect the Express by wire to the Extreme!

Cat Express 500 Slow Admin and keeps crashing
Hi
I have a customer with 2x WS-CE500-24PC and 2x WS-CE500-24TT
They are brand new and most ports are set to IP Phone smartports with 2 as wireless access ports and 1 router port with an 1841 in it. They are all uplinked together.
When first rebooted http admin access is ok but after a couple of minutes it becomes un-usable and then eventually the switch reboots (does this 2 times a day).
i have 1x WS-CE500-24LC and this is fine never misses a beat, its also linked into the same network.
here is where it gets crazy, if i set all the ports to other its fine, but i cannot use any of the phones because it does not put them in the voice VLAN.
Any ideas it driving me and my customer mad.
AndyTry to disable the arp inspection feature in the CE500's CLI.
This feature can sometimes introduce some disconnectivity on this particular switch.
Enter the following line in your browser:
http://10.0.0.1/exec/cli
ip arp inspection vlan 1-1024
ip arp inspection vlan 1-1024 logging acl-match none
ip arp inspection vlan 1-1024 logging dhcp-bindings none
If your switch uses a different ip address than please use that address. After you applied this, it will take about 15 till 20 minutes to decrease the cpu utlization. -
I am trying to connect a Cat 500 Express to a 2950, using a stright-through cable.
If I enable auto-mdix on the Cat 500, I have to enable auto speed and duplex settings.
If I do this, I get a duplex mismatch.
Can i set the auto-mdix to work, without having to auto-negotiate the speed and duplex settings ?
On the 2950, the settings are 100/full
ThanksBY default CE-500 is auti-mdix & u need not make any changes on duplex settingz. bcoz i never faced such problem by connecting my CE-500 to 2950, juz a straight cable connecting from CE-500 gigabit to 2950 gigabit. thatz it, i didn't get any duplux mismatch, try to check once again in 2950 that every thing is set auto(duplex & speed)

Cat Express 500 & 2950 RSTP & PVST
Hi,
I have a Cat 500 connected to a 2950,
on a 802.1q trunk.
The Cat 500, seems to be running RSTP and the 2950, is capabale of only pvst.
The port seems to go into blocking state in the Cat 500.
After changing the Cat 500 to run IEEE STP, the problems I was having with ports being blocked disappeared.
Can anyone suggest what is the best approach when running a Cat 500, connected to a Cat 2950 ?
Do I need to enable MST on the Cat 500, so that it can interop with 2950 ?
If I have only thses 2 switches, is the best option just setting both switches to use the same STP mode ?
ThanksYES,
the best option is to use the same STP type/mode throughout your environment.
rapid-PVST+ is interoperable with PVST+. when the two exist, the rPVST+ switch reverts to PVST+ unless you are running dual STP instances, one for rPVST+ and one for PVST+.
again, if you can run the same STP mode, please do.
please see the following link for much more STP info:

Setting up Time Capsule with existing AirPort Extreme 802.11n and AirPort Express.
I already have and am using an AirPort Extreme 802.11n with an AirPort Express. I want to set up a Time Capsule 802.11n. Which is the best way to configure this?
... Which is the best way to configure this?
The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
As you can see it's quite versatile. -
I am migrating all our Macs to 802.11n. I will have a new Extreme 802.11n base station, and all Macs will be newer models with 802.11n. However, I have an older Airport Express 802.11g that we use for the shared printer.
I have read that the ENTIRE network will run at the speed of the slowest device. Is this true? I know that the printer can only communicate at g, but will I also see the macs having to slow down to g? If so, I will upgrade to a new Express.I have read that the ENTIRE network will run at the speed of the slowest device
That's not exactly true, but it will certainly degrade the network. A new Express (N) is your best solution to maximize the speed of your network. -
IPhone 4 802.11n and Airport Express with Time Capsule
I have a Time Capsule as my main wireless router, extended by an Airport Express (both are latest versions of the hardware and software). The Time Capsule is a dual-band version (2.4 and 5 GHz).
My new iPhone 4, which is supposed to be 802.11n 2.4 GHz compatible (unlike the iPhone 3Gx models) connects to the Time Capsule, but not to the Airport Express - hence no cover in certain parts of the home. There are no options for frequency when you extend a network - it's mostly plug and play from the main wireless router (the Time Capsule). What to do?Welcome to the discussions!
+What to do?+
The iPhone does tend to remember the router that it is originally connected to.
If you plan to use the iPhone most of the time when you are in proximity of the AirPort Express, I suggest that you delete the current WiFi connection on the iPhone, restart the device, locate it near the AirPort Express, and set up a new connection to your network.
Works for me. May or may not work for you. -
Cannot create WDS with Airport Extreme 802.11n and Airport Express b/g
I have gone through all the steps to set up a WDS with my Airport Extreme Dual Band and my Airport Express b/g.
Every time I try to set it up and update the AX the AX disappears from the airport utility and I can no longer see it. I can however set it up to "join a network" just fine.
Anyone have any idea why I cannot do this? I haven't seen anything saying that the AE is not compatible with the AX.
Ideally what I would like to do is have the AX extend the network and then use an ethernet cable to connect it to an imac g4, thus giving the computer "wireless" internet.
Any ideas or suggestions?
ThanksSo just to clarify even if I was to buy a new "n" AX I would still be relegated to "g" speeds?
That's correct if you use the WDS settings on both the AEBS and AX.
But, if you had the "n" AX, you could configure it to "extend a wireless network" and maintain "n" speeds on the network. There would still be some bandwidth loss...10-15% or so...that's unavoidable unless you go to an ethernet connection method.
Do you think for my application it might be better to just buy a reputable wireless usb dongle?
If I understand correctly, you need an ethernet connection for a computer. Why not consider a pair of ethernet powerline adapters? One device plugs in near your AEBS and the other near the device that needs the ethernet connection. The pseudo ethernet signal is conducted over the AC powerlines in your home. This is the next best choice when you can't run an ethernet cable through the house.
This would be a faster and more stable connection than any type of wireless application. It's plug and play. In addition to the powerline adapters, all you'll need are two short ethernet cables to connect one adapter to a LAN port on the AEBS and another short ethernet cable to connect from the adapter to the G4's ethernet port.
Any electronics superstore will have a selection to look at. The cost is approximately $75-125 for a pair depending on how much speed you choose. -
Can't believe this hasn't happened to anyone else, but I can't find a relevant thread.
I have a Time Capsule and an Airport Express base station. The Time Capsule was configured as a WDS base station, and the Express as a WDS Relay. The Express is less than a year old, ie 802.11n.
Everything worked beautifully until firmware upgrade 7.5.2 which self-installed on the Time Capsule just as you would expect - except the relay stopped working.
I've tried everything I can imagine, but I can't get the two devices to communicate with each other any more (even with the new firmware on the Express). I have read somewhere on the Apple site that WDS "doesn't work" with 802.11n, but this doesn't fully explain how it did work with 802.11n up until the time of the firmware upgrade to put it mildly. And releasing a firmware "upgrade" that stops existing configurations working, without warning, is not really an Apple thing to do.
One thing I haven't tried is to revert to older firmware; do I really have to do that? Or is there something wrong here please, Apple? Or did I just imagine, for those 9 months, that the relay was working sweetly?!
Don't know if this is related, but Airport Utility almost consistently fails to see both devices if they are both switched on, but can only see one or the other. Is it possible that the Express has developed a fault?
Please help; I have an old house and I can't penetrate most of it without my WDS!!Might this apply?

Speed issue with TC and Airport Express 802.11n in WDS mode...
Here is my problem.
I replaced my older base station / Express duo with
a new Time Capsule (1TB) and a new Airport Express (802.11n).
I set up the network with the TC as base station running a WDS network (WDS main) and the Express is the WDS remote.
When I check the wireless clients from the TC, I find my iMac running at 130Mbits and the Extreme at 54Mbits.
No other wireless clients are connected to the network (I kept my slower network as a parallel one for my "older" Macs).
The only other connected device is my Dish network DVR that is connected via an Ethernet cable directly to the Express.
So my question is why does the Express not communicate at >54 speed rate with the TC?
And, why does my iMac connect with 130 and not with 300Mbits?
Any thoughts?Instead of using WDS, you should take advantage of the "Allow this network to be extended" option that is available for the 802.11n AirPorts including the TC. WDS only operates in the 802.11g radio mode.
Here's the basic setup:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Airport Express 802.11n and high speeds *impossible*
Hi there,
well I have been playing around for the last 24-48hrs with an AirportExpress 802.11n wiht the latest firmware on it, to achieve high speed wifi ~300mbps as 802.11n allows. The following hardware was used during this tests:

Enabling/ disabling wide channels doesnt change the avarage transfer rate significantly.
These are just a few examples of all tests I have done, I have tried every possible configuration and took screen shots of almost 80% of the test (if someone is interested in reviewing this).
I couldnt find a single configuration in infrastructure mode that is as fast as the ad-hoc connection, so I assume either apple's setup for ad hoc and using channels is different to infrastructure or the airport express simply is unable to perform the same way as the wifi cards being used inside my Macs (which is my conclusion unless someone proves me wrong).
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Keep in mind, my findings show a 100% faster network in Ad hoc mode on a 2.4 Ghz connection
This is quite unsatisfying as I have bought the airport express on Feb 9th 2010 and it was the latest available model according to local genius bar.
So to quote apple: "The AirPort Express Base Station is based on an IEEE 802.11n draft specification and is compatible with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g." yes it might be compatible but doesnt allow you to fully operate at those specifications or has anyone been able to achieve this somehow?why didnt I find this any earlier ...
