Extend wi-fi across many acres?

Is it possible to extend a wi-fi network across many outdoor acres?  Think hundred-acre cattle yards.  I know very little of networking, but thinking power and "repeaters" could possibly do it?  Of course, we don't have power out to all corners of these yards.  Is there now some sort of solar panel with battery that a router could plug into?  And lastly, even if we could get power out to these places, doesn't signal strength (or at least speed) diminish the farther you go from the office?
I'm just trying to detemine if it's realistic to "wi-fi up" an entire cattle yard, or if it's too difficult/not very realistic (in which case we'd have to write apps to be disconnected and just communicate with the server whenever close to the office).
Thanks for any info.

but i always thought all airport devices had to be connected to an existing network via ethernet?
Now you know that this is not the case.
Apples advice & the instructions all say you have to connect via ethernet
Not sure exactly what you are referring to here. For example, this well known popular Apple support article....with specific steps to extend a network wirelessly......has been around for about 5 years in its present form, but it is a revision of another support document that was available long before that.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
Is this something that the newer airport devices now support?
No, all AirPort devices for the past 8 years or so have supported wireless extension. But, that does not mean that any device will work any other device...... you have to have devices from similar generations to insure compatibility.

  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

May not be an upgrade issue ..
You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Extending video layers across the time line simultaneously

Any one Know how to extend video layers across the time line simultaneously?
I have been working on a Video for a few days and have all the layers I need to make my video but when I came to start creting the clip on the timeline there was no promt asking me how long I want the clip to be. I want to extend all the layers on the clip to 21:10 seconds similtaniously. Ther is about 600 layers in numorous groups and I dont want to have to extend each layer across the time line to 21:10 seconds individualy?
    can any one help?

it is currently lacking the ability to adjust the length using multiple layers at once. However that said, if you are done animating the layer individualy, you can select all layer (or a partial) and convert them to a smart object. That smart object can then be extended in time. Playing in photoshop maybe slower due to the smart object.

  • How can I apply a database change across many instances concurrently?

In support of a nationwide imaging application that will place HP UNIX servers housing Oracle instances in over 100 offices across the country, we're looking for the most efficient way to apply (distribute, execute, and validate) our database releases to all Oracle instances on the same day. Given a limited number of DBAs (3 or 4) and such a large number of instances located throughout the country, an automated solution is mandatory. Is there a tool or methodology available to handle this task?
Assumptions: the database structure across all Oracle instances will be identical and each database release (series of SQL scripts) will be consistent across all instances.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your response. We're looking for a solution that will allow us to apply changes to the database structures (tables, indexes, procedures, privileges, tablespaces, etc...) via DDL without changing the underlying data. Each of the sites we'll need maintain will have their own unique data. Replicating the data is not an option. We are in search of a solution that allows us to apply a database structure change across many sites at one time without updating the underlying data.

  • Extending div's across the width of the browser

I wan't to extend some div's across the width of the browser, for eg: background colors. My container has a max width, so its not straightforward. If I remove that constraint, I lose the ability to demonstrate the max width behavior, which I don't want either.

Yeah, the grid in reflow is really just a visual and snap aid, it doesn't have any implications except for the min/max width in relation to the breakpoints. We use a lot of full width background images which don't really snap to the area outside the grid unless they're set to body, but want full page or at least much wider than half a gutter (via show outer gutter) content images and bgs.
So it really depends on the min col grid you need and the hard 16 col limit is an issue for a grid that that has a higher common multiple for it's column variations. I.e. a 5 and 3 column design would need 15 for the content and 2 for the outside margin but that's over the limit.
For simplicity's sake we've moved to mostly 2-4 column designs which we can make work with a max 12+2 cols, but you have to figure out multiples that work out cleanly while maintaining a natural looking relationship of content to margins.
For that reason, and because of the platform on which we build most projects (NationBuilder) requiring a sidebar,  we've gone heavily to 3,2,1 col layouts which we can break into just six layout cols.
But another workaround we're using is to flop the grid and gutters so that we have 7 gutters of 12% and 6 cols of 4%. The grid is largely just a visual aid so it doesn't seem to have any implications so far. The issue we were having was that the outside gutters are only half width which doesn't work for our designs which tend to have a lot of common match ups and lineups. In that case you have the larger gutters which have a central snap guide as well which you may be able to repurpose to many more cols if you can come up with a clean grid is a lot of experimentation or a spreadsheet, the only way we were able to calculate all our variables into nice round numbers…
The simplest fix though is probably a lifting of the arbitrary limit on number of columns. I saw on another thread the devs were willing to consider that, they just needed a solid usecase to do so. A grid that accounts for a design with both 4 and 5 columns in it would require at least 20 cols, and 2 extra on the outside would probably be pretty useful so a 24 col max should allow for almost all contingencies…

  • Is there a quick way to make a universal change across many InDesign/PDF files?

We are a mid-sized manufacturing firm that produces many different versions of our product. For each of our units, we produce a set of technical instructions, using Illustrator and InDesign. Within each instruction manual, there are pages unique to the individual unit, and pages that are universal (boilerplate) across all of our manuals. We export each complete instruction manual to PDF for printing and placement on our website. At present, we need to make a change to one of our universal pages that appears in every manual. Is there a way to apply the change across all of our manuals without opening each InDesign file separately, updating the link, and creating a new PDF? That process is obviously time consuming and labor intensive considering the volume of files that will need to be updated. As such, any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. We would like to automate the process, even if it means updating our software or changing our method of producing instruction manuals.

Basically - it sounds like they have Illustrator file that is common to many different inDesign files.
And seems like they are placing some pages of a master document from InDesign within other InDesign documents.
When they update a master document and make changes to it - they have to open and update all the modified links across all the documents.
Using my method - you can select a base folder where all the InDesign files are residing.
Run the script - and select "Update modified links before exporting"
So in essence all the PDFs will be generated - and the modified link will be updated in each document.
Plus all the InDesign files will update the modified documents.
I do this a fair bit and it works for me very well.
Unless I have misunderstood the problem here.

  • Extending header/footer across entire page

I was wondering how to extend the header and footer of a web page so that it will always extend all the way across the width of the page no matter what the size of the screen is. I have heard removing the padding works but I am not sure how to do so.

For best results, use pen and paper to rough sketch out the layout you want. Then choose an appropriate pre-built CSS layout or grid/framework to build your own.

  • What is the best workflow to duplicate adjustments across many clips and export them separately?

    Hi,
I'm pretty new at this. I have 30 or so clips comprising about 90 min of HD AVCHD video. I'd like to adjust color and lighting and export them separately as max quality MP4s(h.264). In terms of PE, no real fancyeffects, the adjustments panel meets my needs. I plan to apply the same adjustments to each clip at least as a starting point. I own Adobe the Elements Family ver 12 (Premiere, Photoshop, and Organizer) and LightRoom. Can you advise me on what the most expeditious workflow would be?
I'm not sure about any of this but here is my thinking so far:
    Premiere Elements:
    Pro:  Offers good adjustment control.
Con: I'm thinking adjustments only apply to clips on the timeline or storyboard. If I remove the clip from the time line, adjustments won't stick in the assets panel. Export, exports everything on the time line. I'd have to go through the adjustment and export process individually for each clip. Not sure if I can save a development preset?
    Elements Organizer:
Pro:  Can work with and export clips as separate files. Adjustments can be duplicated across clips(?).
Con:  Not as many adjustment controls as Premiere Elements.
    LightRoom:
Pro:  Can work with and export clips as separate files. Adjustments can be duplicated across clips.
Con: Not sure if it has as many adjustment controls as Premiere Elements or not. Any others?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I've had a few awarenesses since writing this post. Thought I'd write them up before a generous soul spent time answering my above question.
It has become evident to me that I should be using one of the databases to accomplish this task rather than the video editor. ie EO or LR rather than PrEl. (I started with PrEl, therefore my confusion.)
Organizer vs. LR is a question that I brought up before with lot's of helpful replies. No need to repeat all that. I guess one remaining question that would be helpful to know, however, is which library has superior video editing for a single video and for application of edits across multiple videos, Elements Organizer or LightRoom?
    thanks for reading!

  • Aggregating across many-to-many relationship in Power Query?

    Hi, another M question.
I am trying to push all my DAX calculated column logic back to Power Query and what I couldn't figure out is how to aggregate across my many to many relationship.
Customer has many companies. He has sales for each company on a bunch of dates. Also, he has timesheets for each company for each date. Customer would like to calculate the labour cost for each company and show them as a ratio of sales in the sales report.
(eg Kitchen labour cost should be x% of food sales)
Now I am fine writing all the measures in DAX because I can put them in a table isolated from the Power Query tables. But calculated columns I would ideally push back to Power Query.
This is the DAX I constructed to put a calc column in the SalesReport table for the Kitchen labour costs
    =CALCULATE(SUM(Timesheet[Labour Cost]), FILTER(Bridge_CompanyDate, Bridge_CompanyDate[CompanyDateKey]=SalesReports[CompanyDateKey]), FILTER(Timesheet, Timesheet[Category]="Kitchen"))
Is there a way to do similar types of aggregation in Power Query? I am tired of rewriting these calc columns when I have to reload the thing in the data model :(
    Thanks

Hi Cathy. You can do this kind of calculation in Power Query, but it's not quite the same as in Power Pivot/DAX.
If I understand your DAX expression correctly, you're wanting the sum of the [Labour Cost] column from the Timesheet table, for all rows with a [Category] of "Kitchen", where the timesheet date matches the date of the current row in the SalesReport table.
In M, this would look something like this:
= Table.AddColumn(Source, "Kitchen Labour Cost", each let expectedDate = [Date] in List.Sum(Table.SelectRows(Timesheet, each [Category] = "Kitchen" and [Date] = expectedDate)[Labour Cost]))
(Instead of going through the Bridge_CompanyDate table, I'm matching the SalesReport and Timesheet dates directly just to make the example simpler.)
Let me know if that helps.

I have Photoshop CS5 Extended. I have had this programme several years now,  which I use on my Mac. 10.7.5. I have today tried to open an image in my photoshop and is giving me all sorts of trouble. What can the problem be?

  • Extending a graphic across artboards

CS4. I am primarily an illustrator and logo designer. I don't do booklets very often.
I have a four-page, full bleed promotional piece to design, an outer spread (front and back cover) and an inner spread (pages 2 and 3). The inner spread will have artwork that spans left to right, across the fold. Due to printing requirements and the printer's imposition preferences, each artboard represents a page, not a spread. In other words, I have artboards for front cover, page 2, page 3 and back cover, and I'll deliver four press-ready PDF pages to the printer for his shop to assemble.
How do I set up the artboards and the artwork to cross the fold on the inner spread? Do I abut the artboards (allowing the opposing bleed guides to overlap? Do I place the artwork on page 2 and let it overlap page 3 or do I duplicate the artwork on pages two and three?
It's not clear how this should and will work if I'm submitting separate pages. If I place the artwork on artboard 2, then produce the four separate PDF pages, won't page 3 be blank? (I'm sure this is easy, I'm just inexperienced with it.)
    Thanks.

Thanks again, Scott. As you probably have deduced, the nature of my work keeps me in Photoshop and Illustrator pretty exclusively. I think I've done maybe 10 jobs in InDesign and its page layout ancestors in 20 years. Even before Illustrator, I'd do the occasional multi-page job that came my way with FreeHand's extremely flexible multiple pages, even though I had PageMaker on my machines. So, like all of us, I gravitate to what's familiar.
I appreciate your helping me out on this. Good, practical, easy to follow advice, as always.
Shunith, nothing weird in the slightest. It's not that this printer "can't" handle artist-generated spreads. They can and they have. It's that they have some pretty impressive, modern equipment whose software does all imposing with precision and reliability. So they prefer single pages from the artist. Because they're so incredibly and consistently good, I give them exactly what they want. Thanks to Scott, I can on this job too.

  • I just tried to import photos from iphone to MacAir  but only some came across, many others as dark space. The app thinks I have transferred them all but I want to redo the process and it is not obvious how to do that. I deleted the dark images  already,

How may I reimport photos from my iphone 4s to the MacAir iPhoto as only some images came across.. It is not obvious to me, like it is with other programs I have used.

Also, you can have Image Capture automatically open when you connect the phone or any camera. To do that you need to open iPhoto on your Mac (yes, the setting is in iPhoto and that is a bit strange).
Why do I have to buy iPhoto to get to a setting so that I don't have to use iPhoto?!?! Not very Apple-like.
If the device is attached and highlighted in Image Capture, the setting is in the bottom left corner.

  • Common itunes and iphoto library across many apple devices & users using AExtreme?

Is it possible to maintain a common itunes library and iphoto library shared across multiple users and multiple devices in a home via airport extreme or via airport express and a NAS?

i realized that an itunes library folder is different from an itunes media folder although the later resides in the former. turns out while each user account with apple should have its own library they can point to the same media folder.
right now i have my dad and my itunes library on my mac point to the same media folder inside /Users/Shared and that way we are able to access the same music and movies for our iphones and ipads.
i guess now all we need to do is move this to a network drive and make itunes point there.

  • Data Modeler: Replicating common attributes across many entities

    Hi,
I am designing a system with many entities (in hundreds) for an SaaS application. These entities all have some common attributes that should appear in all of them. At present my design has about 14 such common attributes which may be increased (or reduced) in future.
Is it possible to group these common attributes under a single umbrella identifier (Data Type?) and then using this identifier in all the entities such that whenever the structure of the identifier is altered all the entities are automatically updated?
The Structured Data Type might have worked if there was a capability to separate its constituent attributes into individual table columns (while generating relational/physical models) rather than being retained as an Object type.
For now I created a 'dummy' entity with all the common attributes which I then copy and rename to actual entities. The problem of course is that I will have to manually update all the entities if any of the common attributes is altered.
If this were possible, it will really make life very easy.
    Thanks
PS: Maybe I should submit this as an enhancement request

    Hi Chiedo,
no, it's not implemented. You can do that using transformation scripts - here is demo http://download.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/sqldev/EA1_UserDefinedDesignRules/EA1_UserDefinedDesignRules.html
There is script for tables, we can provide similar script for entities.

  • Suggestions on extending wifi coverage across a street

Thanks, Ferdinand, I'll look into that!

We have an office and warehouse across the street from our main building. It is currently connected to our building via an old underground connection that goes out pretty much every time the weather is bad. Running another physical line is not an option at this time. There are currently only 2 users in that building - one that only needs email access and occasional web browsing capability. The other user does not stay at that station and only uses it maybe once or twice a month. That user needs to be able to access our corporate network via our internal Citrix client.Currently the underground line is run into a router that feeds into a switch that distributes to those two systems.Across the street at our main building there is a room with a large window that offers a clear line of sight to the large window of office in question across...
