External storage bare drive recommendations

I need a couple of bare external archive drives for things like videos and photos.  Nothing I need to have running constantly.  I'll be using these with one of the older style NewerTech Voyageur SATA docks and that doesn't have active cooling so I usually just connect drives long enough to get files on and off.
I'm thinking of at least 1 TB and maybe going as high as 2.  You can get an extra TB with a 2TB drive for only an addiitional $30 and something in the $100-$150 range is about all I can afford since I will be getting two of these (backup!).
My main concern is Tiger compatibility.  I will be using these on the dock over Firewire.  I'm hoping the SATA dock itself (which is about 3 years old but much newer than my G4!) will work, but are there any OS issues with drives this size or the file structuring on the drive?
One example of what I'm checking is:
Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Yes, the greens are slower but this is an archive drive.
Any other recommendations?

It is limited in what it says, "and the latest versions of Mac OS X and Linux are reported to handle 4K sectors without third-party software."  Nothing about older versions of OSX one way or the other.  The person with whom I spoke led me to believe that the 4k addressing was all handled inside the drive and since that was handled okay, anything outside the drive would work as it would with any other drive.  This doesn't seem to be the case, at least as far as Windows XP is concerned.
I'm tempted to call them back and double check and make a note of the time and person so if I order a set and have problems I can refer to the call should it be necessary to return them.  Then too, I note the drive at OWC is $30 more per drive than at another large online retailer and with 2 drives that's a pretty hefty difference.  Additionally, I was reading online reviews.  While the WD 1TB and 2TB drives get 4/5 ratings, if you read them, even many of the "good" 4 star ratings mention a large number of DOA or returns within one month.  In reality it seems only half of the people who comment actually have a flawless experience which strikes me as a low score.  On the other hand it isn't any better for any other manufacturer.
Well, I have about 30 GB left on my two 640 GB drives I bought a couple of years ago so I guess I can hold out another month or two.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

  • External FireWire Hard Drive Recommendations

I know that this has been asked many times and I've read many replies, but I'm looking for some specific information.
I am looking at 1, 1.5, or 2TB drives for my MacBook Pro. The 500GB Western Digital drive I currently have is connected via Firewire. It powers down very nicely when the Mac sleeps and stays connected and powers up when the Mac wakes up.
I'm not using this drive with Time Machine. I have a Time Capsule that my wife and I share. So this drive is just for external storage.
I did pick up a WD 1TB drive with a USB only connection, but it disconnected when the Mac went to sleep and woke up. So I returned it. Besides, I'd prefer firewire for speed. And if I can daisy chain my 500GB drive, that's an added bonus. I've had the 500GB connected with USB or Firewire and never had disconnection problems. After doing a search, I found that the Western Digital that I had (USB only) didn't send enough power through the USB port when it powered down. Therefore the Mac thought that it had disconnected.
I've looked at Western Digital, Seagate, Lacie, and Iomega. All have mixed reviews. And none of them definitively say that they will not disconnect when the Mac goes to sleep and wakes up and/or when the drive powers down to save power.
So I'm looking for some recommendations based on personal experience. Or some "stay away from ...".
I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada so many of the U.S. sites are out of bounds. I'd like to get something that I might be able to retrun if there are problems.
    Thanks
    Bob

Just to close this one out, I picked up a 1.5TB LaCie d2 Quadra yesterday from a local retailer. The price was just a few dollars higher than mail order and of course no shipping. I ran into an error with the setup assistant and had to format it using the Disk Utility, but otherwise no problems. I've daisy chained my old WD 500GB My Book via FireWire 400 because that's what it had. And the LaCie is hooked up by FireWire 800 of course. Very nice to have the cables in the box.
In any case, it's fast, powers down nicely, plays nice with sleep, and so on. My only gripe might be the spin noise. There's no fan, but the spinning is actually louder than the My Book and is noticeable. Not a bad sound, just there. I'm sure it'll become background noise soon. Plus, the drive will mostly be powered down automatically so I'm not overly concerned. Since the drives are in behind my monitor, I don't see any lights, so no worries there.
So now we'll see about reliability and lifespan. But those are things that are always in question with any drive from any manufacturer. That's why we make backups.
Thanks again for the advice and suggestions.

  • External backup hard drive recommendations

I'm ashamed to say, but all that I have for a backup is a pocket portable USB 500G drive. Now it does 'do the job', although very slowy. I'm looking for recommendations for a new hard drive. I currently have 1 PC desktop(ethernet) and two MBP (wireless) connected via network through an AEBS. All of the machines are physically in different rooms and currently between all three machines, I'm at about 300GB of data, This is strictly for home use. I hope I've given enough background information. So, should I go for a network backup drive? It seems the simplest choice, but having never used one, wasn't certain. How about brands/style, which RAID? I don't want to spend above $1000 and would prefer to keep it @ about $500-700.
    Thanks for the input

Have you considered an Apple Time Capsule?? It will wirelessly backup any MACs you have on the network. PCs can also browse to it.
If not you need a good External hard disk drive with a USB interface so that you can connect it to the back of your AEBS and use it as a shared drive on the network. This is what I plan to do when I get my TC. This external drive must have hardware RAID built in so you never have to worry about losing data. You could keep it as a backup and storage area that all other clients can access.
I would recommend a My Book Studio Edition 2. This has RAID and will mirror one disk to the other automatically, so if a disk dies you can easily replace it (WD give a 5 year warranty as well!). It also has a FireWire800 port so if you want to connect it directly to a MBP, you can use the faster connection.
Here is a video I created of the drive...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUbBdAuzxXk
Although I have the 4TB version, you can also get a 2TB version, which has 2x1TB discs inside.
If this is too much and you dont want the Firewire ports, you can also get this same drive in Black which is USB only - called the My Book Mirror Edition. Its also a bit cheaper since it doesnt have the other ports.

  • External Firewire Hard Drive Recommendation

    Hi.
Can anyone recommend a reliable brand for external hard drives? I'm not the most tech savvy person and have read various threads where people have had problems w/ compatibility.
I would need this to transfer work files, mp3s and images files, etc.
I would like to buy one relatively soon but would like some advice first.
    Thank you!
imac special edition Mac OS X (10.3.9)
imac special edition   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400 MHz PowerPC G3/640 MB SDRAM

I will always recommend the Mercury Elite Pro USB/FW drives from OWC, but as long as you get a drive or enclosure with the Oxford 911 chipset, that would be an excellent choice. Avoid the more common and cheaper Prolific chipset as it is not as reliable and cannot always boot all Macs.
You can either get a pre-assembled drive, or "roll your own" by buying an enclosure and adding your own IDE drive to it. It is super easy to do, but there is no shame in buying one that is all ready to go.
I like having both FW and USB for the flexibility of using either interface. I prefer to use FireWire, but not all computers have it, so you might have to resort to using the slower USB. It is nice to have that option.

  • External Firewire Hard Drive Recommendations for novice

I would like to buy a external hard drive so that I can create a bootable clone, back up files and store pictures on. I am intimidated by reading the threads here on the various problems. Could some suggest "Hard Drives 101" or a simple to use hard drive for me?
    Thanks in advance.

You cannot go wrong with an external FireWire drive from Other World Computing. I recommend something in the Mercury Elite line, as these are known to work well with Macs. These come in different configuations (e.g. FW 800, FW 400, USB 2.0, and combinations thereof). Unless you have a FW 800 port on your Mac, there is no reason to get this option. FW 400 and USB 2.0 should suffice. I recommend buying a drive with at least as large as your Mac's hard disk, though you may with for more space (e.g. to make a bootable clone, and have room left over for other back ups).
There are other decent manufacturers, as well. I have read some good things about LaCie in these discussion forums, so you may wish to shop around.

  • Backing up an external storage hard drive with time machine

I have a setup with an external hard drive on which I store photos etc. I also back up my desktop with time machine to a separate external. I want to back up my photo drive to this external through time machine and a tech at the apple store showed me how to remove the external drive from the excluded list and include it in the regular time machine backups. When I go to set this up with my own computer however, the - symbol is greyed out and I am unable to select the hard drive. If anyone has any solutions I am all ears!

If it's listed in gray, not black, it means the disk isn't formatted +Mac OS Extended,+ and Time Machine cannot back it up.
You'll have to copy the data elsewhere temporarily, reformat the drive (see #1 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]), then copy it back.

  • External dvd/cd drive recommendation sought

I have an iMac G5 20" screen. Even my machine has an internal dvd/cd player/burner, I would like to also use an external one. Can anyone recommend a good quality external?

I'm partial to LaCies. My job is to film company training sessions, seminars and other events, edit them down to interesting, watchable movies, and burn them to DVD and CD. I've been through several internal and external burners and when I picked up a LaCie USB Slim I never looked back. The LaCie folks just make good quality long lasting burners.
I plugged it in to my Intel iMac and it worked right off the bat. Had a bit of a problem because I am using Toast which runs under Rosetta and that limits my burn speed to 2X (over 24X on other OS's) but even at that speed I get a quick fast copy or DVD made and know it is not going to be a toaster.

  • External backup hard drive recommendations/advice?

I've been backing up files one CD-R at a time and it's getting ridiculous. I'd like to buy an external drive which I would update monthly and then disconnect & put on a shelf. I don't need a ridiculous amount of space -- just at least double-digit gigs.
Any insights into the most reliable, easiest to use, most compact/lightweight and best-priced drives would be greatly appreciated.

    --Christine

I Have been using a LaCie 160GB drive for the last couple of years. I use it in conjunction with SuperDuper!, which has made a clone of my system, and then it performs regularly scheduled incremental backups, so I am always up-to-date.
It's easy and painless, save your CDs for better things,

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

  • Time capsule as an external storage drive

I have the 2 TB time machine / time capsule router running my network.  I use an external hard drive to store all of my photos from my IMac 24 as the storage space was filling up.  The time capsule, from my understanding will not back up my external storage drive.  Am I able to designate the time capsule as the external drive to store my Iphoto library on and be done with my other external storage drive?  Essentially making the Time Capsule my external drive as well as my back up drive?  I hope that made sense.

That shouldn't be done, but Time Machine will back that drive up as long as it's not set to be excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences. As an iPhoto library can only be stored on a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, you'll be able to remove it from the exclusion list and use Time Machine to back it up unless you're using an unusual configuration.

  • How to connect external storage devices (flash drive) with it

hello dear. I am using this hp webOS-3.0.5 device for last 8 months. It is really a wonderful device to have. But I have some queries regarding it's usage. First can we attach any usb device(external storage devices (flash drive) with it? Second is there any other way to use internet on it without wi-fi connection? Thanks
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

I'm afraid the answer is No to both questions.
External storage can be acheived easily using the free 50GB Box.com account included with each touchpad.  This does rely on a good wifi source however, which leads to your other question.
The wifi touchpad needs a wifi signal to go online.  Modern cellphones can act as "wifi hotspots" and can translate a cellular data connection to wifi.  (I do this with my Pre3 and a free program called "FreeTether", a homebrew app).

  • How to transfer  photos from a MAC to a USB external storage drive?

How to transfer  photos from a MAC to a USB external storage drive?

Just the Photos? Or the Library?
    If it's the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
