Extracting numeric value of a char

Hi All,
I need to get the numeric value of the chars. Here is the code I am using:
TextField userNumber = new TextField("User Number:", "", 10, TextField.NUMERIC);
String forNumber = userNumber.getString();
char number2 = forNumber.charAt(1);
char number3 = forNumber.charAt(2);
char number10 = forNumber.charAt(9);
long counter = number10 * (number2 + number3);
The result I am getting is the product of the ASCII values instead of the numeric values.
I've been searching for the solution for a couple of days now but nothing had worked. Thanks for any help.

Use of CAST function will convert NUMBER to CHAR but it takes a lot of time if there are large number of recrods.
Syntax:
CAST(col_name AS char)
I have tried this, it worked fine for less records.
Are you getting any error while using cast function or while querying..
As far as I know it won't give error in these cases (if correct syntax used) but it will take very much time (depending on the number of records) while querying.

Functional module on extracting character and numeric value

Dear All,
I have one file which type is character. It contains alphanumeric values. (Ex. 500G & 7KG etc.) I want to extract numeric and characteristic values.
There is no pre-defined no. of digits means actual value may have 5, 6 7.. digits.
Ex.
1) Actual Value: 8975G
Target Value: : 8975
2) Actual Value: 500KG
Target Value: 500000
Is there any standard function are available for this task?

Entering numeric values in CHAR field without quotes

We are upgrading from Oracle 9i to 10g. In 9i we were able to add numeric data into a CHAR field without single quotes like
insert into table (id, name, ...) values (1, 'some name', ....)
When we migrated to 10g, we are getting database errors.
Any ideas on what can be causing this and why it worked on 9i and not on 10g?

Converting char to numeric value

I have table with social security no. but application does not
have any validation for data so i get all different kinds of
data like...
123-24-0988
123458900
n/a
N
f234-90-8877
12 345 6789
Now i want to remove all '-' and alpha char from value and just
want to remain only nuemric characters so i can use it as where
parameter.
Is their any function that i can use for this or any other logic
that i can use for this?

As demonstrated in a previous discussion regarding checking for
numeric values, translate does not produce the proper results
when you translate it to a null value. However, you can achieve
the desired results, by translating to spaces, then replacing
the spaces:
UPDATE table_name

Function to extract only numeric value

Is there any function in oracle so that I could extract only the numeric values like
4308720 from that string..?

You can use translate as demonstrated above.
You just have to make sure you translate out all the characters that you don't want that may appear in the string. e.g. if the only other characters are uppercase A-Z then you can just use:
SQL> ed
Wrote file afiedt.buf
1* select replace(translate('LAX4308720', 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789','??????????????????????????0123456789'),'?') from dual
SQL> /
REPLACE
4308720
SQL>

How to get the day as numeric value without formatting the date?

Hello,
to reduce the costs of a sql-statement I need to get the day of a date-value as number (to compare it to a numeric value) without any formatting. Every formatting results in a full table scan of the table with the date field. Is there any function to solve this problem?
Oracle version is 11g.

The explain plan shows a full table scan on T2. With EXTRACT(DAY FROM T2.Date2) there is no difference.It probably would and should in any case.
Look at your predicates, which of them would reduce the resultset to a fair size compared to the total number of records in the table?.
- You may have a huge number of records when you say date less than
- Of these perhaps one seventh have day = 1
- My guess is that most have Inactive = 0
Besides, you should not rely on implictit char to date conversion, always use TO_DATE
How many records are in the table? - How many will that query return?

In AUSP table Char values in equipment characteristics are captured against object number.But this table does not cappture numeric characteristics.
Are these numeric values captured in any function module?

Bug in sort of numeric values in ( title and album ) string.

The Bug in the sort-function of the iPod results in mixed up track list.
An album with more then 9 tracks will be sorted in the wrong way, when only title or filename or album field is just to give a track a number. The play order is 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 2, 3 , 4 , 5, 6.... instead of the correct order 1,2,3,4,5,6...10,11, 12...
For example: After playing the track named "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 1 - Yellow Submarine" the ipod will play "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 10 - Baby, You´re A Rich Man" instead of "The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 2 - Hey Bulldog."
The programmer have to search the string for numbers and join all numeric values to a single number.
Example: Sample data :abc123. is "a" a number? no. is "b" a number no. is "c" a number no. is "1" a number? yes. store. is "2" a number? yes. join to "1". (now we have "12"). is "3" a number? yes. join to "12". (Now we have "123") -> EOL
Is "123" largen than "99"? yes! is "123" larger than 124. no!
Thats it. In perl you need 1 line of sourcecode, in c and c++ this can be done in 10 lines. In java (there a objects for this type of sort).
And every user will be happy and nobody has to do the 01, 02, 03 workaround or reimport their audiobooks.
Alternativly Apple should thing about storing the original filename in the ID3 tag or itunes database. This would make sorting the files without id3 tags (believe me or not, there are many people using mp3 for 10 years and have no id3 tags in there mp3-library) in itunes possible. (there is a god free tagger for mac os but no for windows.)
A company like Apple should have the ability to correct the error / bug in the iPod-firmware (have the same issue in classic and iphone) or itunes-softwar.
This is a wellknown and very common error done by newbie programmers or people who have not read the documentation of the software-libraries.

I still have an H140 in the cupboard. As I recall that needs leading zeros on filenames to sort properly. Since both WMP & iTunes include leading zeros it was never really an issue. THE Rename should be able to extract the track numbers from part of the filename and is also able to generate counters, along with the usual functions of setting tag fields from part of the file and/or folder name. Unfortuanetly THE Rename is still on the complicated side - I suspect there would be no easy way to lump together the variety of options that it has while keeping it very simple.
Once you've used an external program to adjust the tags you can make iTunes re-read them just by selecting the group of files in question, using CRTL-I to "Get Info." and then clicking OK +without making any changes+. iTunes will recheck it's database against any values in the tag and update as required. Given the lack of existing tags I would imagine that you don't let iTunes reorganise your music at the moment and would suggest you keep things that way at least until you are sure that all the tags have been correctly applied and you have a suitable backup. I stick to a Artist/Album/## Track structure which I don't let iTunes manage so that I can always recover details from the filesnames if I should ever accidentally edit more tracks than I intend.

How to check non-numeric value in a field

Hi all,
I have a field 'MVALUE'. HOw can I check if I have a non-numeric value in my field. Let us say if I have a value '<25' in this field. How can I check if the value in this field is non-numeric. The field MVALUE is of CHAR datatype.

What is the difference between numerical value and unicode value of a character.
Character.getNumericalValue('a'); --> returns 10
Character.getNumericalValue('A'); --> returns 10
System.out.println(((int)'a')); ---> outputs 97
System.out.println(((int)'a')); ---> outputs 65
Can any one help me understand?

To spell integers as high as 5,373,484, use 'Jsp' instead of 'ssssssp'.
TO_CHAR ( TO_DATE ( n -- n = integer to be spelled
 , 'J'
 , 'Jsp' -- Case-sensitive
 )5373484 is the Julian date of December 31, 9999, the latest DATE value in Oracle. In Oracle 10.2, you can actually spell numbers a little bit higher using the expression above, but I'm not sure why, and I wouldn't count on being able to do so in future versions.
There's no need for INITCAP here. If the 2nd argument to TO_CHAR is initcapped (as above), then the output will be, too.
To spell even larger numbers, see this page by Tom Kyte, which also includes languages other than English, and lakh-crore-arab-kharab wording.

Numeric value variable problem with user exit

Dear experts,
I've created a variable (numeric value, user exit) and I want to get the value of variable from an user exit.
Actually, I want to convert "0calyear" to a number to be albe to calculate (multiplying, dividing etc).
If there is a possible solution only in FOX, the solution will be the best. However I couldn't find anything.
So, the next solution I am trying is user-exit. But I am in stuck here.
The problem is that I have no idea whether the numeric value variable has any sturcture like other variables(char. value) or not. If yes, what structure it has?
I know, the characterisc value variables have the structure as blow,
 ls_varsel-chanm =
 ls_varsel-seqno =
 ls_varsel-sign =
 ls_varsel-opt =
 ls_varsel-low =
I've tried several times with the same way like above, but it doesn't work when I call the variable in "BPS0" or "UPSPL".
How can I solve it? Please let me know.

Hi Ravi,
Sorry, there's a correction. var2 is used for getting the first month of the year selected by the user in var1. If the user doesn't enter a value for var1, then var2 should take first month of current year from var1 which has by default last month of current year (populated in i_step1 from sy-datum). The user can select the value of var1 according to his requirement. Then var 2 should get first month of the year selected. That's why I'm using two exit variables.
It works fine during the initial run of the query. But when the user clicks on the variable button in the toolbar and executes the query, var1 is not being displayed and an error message No value could be determined for var2 is shown. All other variables used in the query are displayed except var1.
Krzys, Is the option Can be changed in Query Navigation available for Exit variables. I'll check that and get back to you.

Can some one please tell me Is there any Function Module to validate only numeric values?
Like in year variable, it can never contain alphanumeric values or special symbols?
Is there any function module to check, wheather the variable contains only numeric values, no alphanumeric value or special symbol?
If there is no as such function module then what is the alternative approach we can take?
