Extremely poor internet service

I'm on Vandenberg Air Force Base Californina, right outside Lompoc (93437) and we have a problem out here.  I've called and called and called about the slow speeds out here with no resolve, maybe i can get someones attention on here.  I have a 3 Mbps connection or so they say, but the only time we see 3 Mbps is at 3AM.  it normally runs between 1 and 2, I know the fine print says between 1 and 3.  Durring peek ours here its dropping to .25 Mbps  thats right verizon i said .25 this is completely unacceptable and a violation of service that you promiss me when i give you my hard earned money every month.  I want this problem corrected immediatly.  I don't know what it's going to take to get my point across.  maybe a class action lawsuit for everyone in the zipcode?  Now i know im only in a forum but i hope they read their own forum, and for thoes of you who say just get another ISP, there isn't another ISP here that's worth a darn, ive looked at them all.  Bottom line is, I want what I'm paying for, not something i can only use in off peek times.  Please Fix the peak time bandwidth issue out here.  I think myself and my fellow Airman that put our lives on the line every day who give you 100% of our best to keep this nation free deserve the same 100% comitment back in return when we pay for a service we should get what is promissed regaurdless of the time of day.
Hopefully this doesn't land on deff ears
Jim

In some areas, Verizon has been known to take speeds from a higher speed, say 15Mbps all the way to down to 3Mbps as a form of bandwidth rationing as a result of lack of capacity upgrades on the DSL Network. Granted, if everything worked wonderfully even with everyone on the base having a 7.1Mbps connection, something else may be up, and that might perhaps suggest you were coming out of a CO instead of a remote. Verizon isn't known to sell more than 3Mbps out of the remotes, mostly due to technical reasons with the equipment they put into them.
Anyways, I will send you off a PM right now as to how to contact someone. He may or may not be able to help you, but if he is, he can give you details on what equipment you're going through and where the problem is. If you ask him about the connections on the base all being slow, he might be able to solve that issue if it's a problem with a piece of equipment. Check your inbox. .
Keep us in the loop as to how things go!

    **Edit**
To add more to this,  somehow I missed it but I had quite a few CRC errors on the outside interface.  I switched the FastEthernet0/0 to speed auto, duplex auto and now I am getting about 45Mbps download speed.  I would still like to see the router get closer to 60 though,  is there anything I could tweak in the config that might increase the speed of this just a little bit?  Or is an 1841 only rated to about 45Mbps with all the firewall features turned on?
    **End Edit**
A school I am doing some volunteer work for has a 60/4 coax internet service through Charter communication.  I just put in an older Cisco 1841 router and used my default standard config I use at many other sites.  For some reason I am only getting about 6 - 8 mbps download speeds with the router.  When I plug directly into the cable modem with my laptop I am getting the advertised speeds.
Attached is my config, it looks pretty standard to me and for the life of me I can not see why this router would be performing so poorly.  The CPU utilization is very low,  I have to be missing something though.
    Thank you everyone

I'm having the same issue with the 1841 I get about 12Megbit were I can get over 20 connected with a cheap old linksys router. If you look at the processor it's pegged at 100% after doing some research I found the 1841 has a slow CPU it's max is only 38meg that's not even natting. I assume when you nat the CPU is maxed out.  My IP input shows 70% while downloading a 500meg file. I'm going to try an ASA5200

  • Extremely poor customer service - Read before ordering!

As somebody who has bought a number of Lenovo products in the past I am extremely disappointed with the direction this company is heading.
At the beggining of August I ordered a laptop for school. The delivery time stated 5 - 10 business days. I checked a few days after and it was delayed to August 30th. I called to see why and was told that a part was on back order, but was assured it would arrive before school starts. This was annoying but acceptable.
Towards the end of the month I checked again to see that it was delayed to September 30th. This proved to be a problem and I called again. I was told again that a part was on backorder. The agent that I talked to said that she would look at other options that are available to me and call me back. We made a phone appointment for her to call me back 3 days later. She never called me back.
I gave her a few more days to call me before checking online to see the status. Now the status has been updated to October 30th.  I called again this past Weds and was told that the product I ordered is now end of life status and I wont get it. The agent cancelled my order and told me to talk to sales about getting another product. The sales office then sent me through a few people before connecting me to the person who took my original order.
This agent said he look for something for me and "DEFINATELY" get back to me the next day. Again, I heard nothing back. I have now wasted a ton of time on the phone listening to non stop false promises.
All my conversations were recorded and will be uploaded for everybody to hear. I will update the post with the youtube vids later. I advise you all to think twice before ordering anything from this company.

  • Extremely poor customer service

I recently moved back home with my Mother and discovered there were a few things concerning Verizon Fios that needed to be updated.  My initial customer service experience when ordering products was satisfactory.  However, when it came time to install the equipment, they never showed up!  I then called customer service and they stated that we weren't scheduled for the install until TWO WEEKS later.  That is way beyond unsatifactory.  Other cable providers send technicians out to your home within 2-3 days.  When I did speak to a customer service rep (Joel) who was very helpful in trying to, "fix," the issue, I stayed on the phone with him for 1 1/2 hours until he was able to schedule a technician to come out within 24 hours of the call.  After that incident, I called to schedule someone to move a Verizon Fios cable pole that they set in the MIDDLE OF MY YARD.  Why on earth would you set one of these unattractive cable poles in the middle of someone's yard in the first place?  When looking at my neighbors homes, I noticed that these poles were set on the outside perimeters of their yards.  I called customer service/technical support back today.  The customer service rep initially could not find the order.  In total I have had to deal with at least 8 different incompentent customer service people (with the exception of Joel)  We pay a lot of money for the services we have purchased through Verizon, the very least they can do is provide exceptional customer service.  If things do not get better, I will be cancelling all of my services with Verizon.

We received a notice that our DVR was the old model and it could not provide us with some of the NEW services  since going to Fios.
It was an EXCHANGE and there would be no charge.
TODAY WE ARE RECEIVING OUR FOURTH DVR. WE HAVE BEEN ON THE PHONE FOR HOURS GOING AND GETTING NO WHERE.
Again LAST NIGHT WE GOT ANOTHER NOTICE another DVR is being delivered today. My wife and I could not get a living breathing Fios Agent.
Finally I called the Wireless Support and one of their people gave me a new phone number. At 2:00 A.M. this morning we finally spoke to someone in CA.
We believe the DVRs are going to stop coming, he found a wrong entry in the system by Verizon.
Today we are going to spend the entire day home again to wait for the UPS delivery man who knows what is going on and feels badly for us as well.
FOR WHAT WE ARE PAYING WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPEAK TO A LIVE BREATHING TECH BEFORE 2:00 A.M. in the morning.
Also until they are all returned and entered in, and I took them to a UPS Logistic Center which took time, we are showing 4 DVR Multiple Room units on our Account. They may charge us for all four if anyone misses what is going on when they are received by Verizon.
WE NEVER REQUESTED THE NEW DVR FIOS TOLD US IT HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THEY HAVE PUT US THROUGH A TERRIBLE TIME.
I am being treated for Stage 3 Cancer and the stress of all this has made me feel even more tired and bad.
We pray that today ends this once and for all. It is easier for us to reach our GOD then a Verizon Support or Customer Service Agent.

  • Poor Internet Service

Right now I have .45 mgs of download speed. I should have 7mgs. This happens EVERY two to three months. I call their tech line and go thru the same crap of check this and check that for an hour or two of wasted time. Then it's TWO days for a Tech to figure out it's their problem in the first place.
This has been going on for three years. Just maybe I need to find another IP for this area. I have had enough of their **bleep**.
Think twice before you go Verizon.

#1 Please post the Transceiver Statistics from your modem.
If you do not know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) What is the brand and model of your router?
#2 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
If you are the original poster (OP) and your issue is solved, please remember to click the "Solution?" button so that others can more easily find it. If anyone has been helpful to you, please show your appreciation by clicking the "Kudos" button.

I recently transferred my internet service to another state.I have not yet moved my imac, just my pc laptop. I cannot get my airport extreme wireless router to work. The green light stays lit when everything is connected but I can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • I have a Airport Extreme that is dropping the wireless signal alot (several times a day). The green light will go amber but the internet service (ethernet cable) will still be fine. The wireless icon on devices with go away.

I have a Airport Extreme that is dropping the wireless signal alot (several times a day) The green light will go amber, but the internet service is still ok if your using an ethernet cable directly plugged in. When the light goes amber all devices that is using wireless will lose there wireless icon. The only way to get the green light back is to unplug the Airport device and replug it back in. I tried the reset on the back but still no luck. What is the fix?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.

  • Re : Apple TV doesn't connect to a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service using Airport Extreme

Hi, using Airport Extreme (Airport Utility version 6.3.2, Internet :DHCP, Router mode : Off (Bridge)) with a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet service. My Desktop (iMac), Macbook,iPhone,iPad join the Airport Extreme Wirelessi network (WPA/WPA2 Personal) easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. However, in case of Apple TV (2nd Generation Software : 6.0.2 (6646.81.1)), it connects the Airport Extreme W-Fi network easily but no Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. Even using the Ethernet connection of the said Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service directly to the Apple TV, no internet network connects. Please help.

There is no way you can handle login details with the ATV and there is probably no way you can do it with extreme in router mode either.. If you need to use a login name and password via a html screen then that is impossible in a device without html.
But your newest addition confuses me.
A slight correction in the question : the Broadband Internet Service isn't Wireless, but having Ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme.
So how do your iphones pop up a login page.
easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options.
The alternative method is to use a computer .. login to your service and use ICS through the computer to the ATV..

  • Is my AirPort Extreme base station A1034 (802.11g) compatible with Comcast 50 Mbps internet service?

Is my AirPort Extreme base station A1034 (802.11g) compatible with Comcast 50 Mbps internet service?

The WAN port on the A1034 will handle up to a 100 Mbps Internet connection, so you are OK there.
Wireless on the A1034 is limited to 54 Mbps tops, so things should work OK as long as wireless devices can receive a strong wireless signal from the Apple router.

  • I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I user ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why?

I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I use an ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why is the speed so different and are there settings I can change to increase the wireless speed?

If your supposed to be getting 20 Mb/s down via your ISP and both Mac's are not getting that on the SpeedTest, then obviously your router appears to be the cause.
Connect one Mac directly to the ISP's modem, power off/wait 30 seconds/then power on, then power on the Mac. The ISP will connect directly to the Mac, then run a SpeedTest.
Then repeat the same for the other Mac. If both Mac's have a problem then it's possibly the ISP, the modem, your lines to them or on your property, or both Mac's are messed up.
You'll have to keep searching for the cause. Call your ISP and ask then to run a test to see if your getting your 20 Mb/s to your modem, that should clear part of the problem.

  • Poor, Poor, Poor Customer Service

    December 18, 2012
    Lowell C. McAdam
    {edited for privacy}
Annual Account Value: Approximately $6,000.00 annually
    Dear Mr. McAdam:
I am a Verizon FIOS customer with a bundle (landline, wireless, cable, Internet) who has been with your organization for almost 10 years who is writing to let you know of my extreme dissatisfaction with your Verizon customer service (or lack of it), which seems to have deteriorated beyond repair. I will try to keep this brief and to the point, but I have had unresolved phone issues for almost a year now that no one in your organization can fix.
    1)    The first landline number I received from you all was the end recipient on a “robo-call” list where I would receive hundreds of phone calls a day, even though I immediately signed up for the “Do Not Call” list upon receipt of the number. It was obviously a bad number that needed to be removed from your system. After a very long time (months or even a year), I switched numbers after much time unsuccessfully spent researching and trying to fix this problem.
    2)    On the second landline number that we implemented, which we had for almost a year, someone had hijacked our home phone line (perhaps a hacker, no one knows) and was using it to dial callers in our local Tampa area market. Needless to say, we received many threatening and obscene phone calls in return (when they hit re-dial), which we have documented. We have spent countless hours each week with various customer service representatives (and various other individuals when the call was escalated) providing them with the Caller ID information and the Caller ID name trying to resolve the issue.  Over time, I probably spoke with 10 or so different individuals on this issue, none of whom seemed to know how to fix the problem.
There was one representative who said a network engineer would put a “digital bug” in our FIOS box to find out who was performing this fraudulent activity so that we could correct the issue. When nothing happened, no communications, nothing, I called back and yet another customer service rep assured he was escalating this issue to the “War Room” and they would fix the issue so I did not have to change my number again. He promised the issue would be resolved in no more than 5 days, or at the very least, some form of communication would occur. This was weeks ago and I never heard from him or anyone else in your organization with any form of follow-up.
    3)    After months and months of trying to resolve this issue, finally, in defeat, I requested a phone number change after learning it is virtually impossible and cost-prohibitive to “unbundle” the services (which I am pretty sure is illegal). Both this number and my old number have a “disconnected” message on them when dialed now.
    4)    Now I am with Verizon’s “Order Escalation” team to execute a simple phone number change. I requested the phone number to be changed on Friday of last week and it is Tuesday and the number still DOES NOT work. I am currently with your “Order Escalation Team” to fix what should have been a 24-hour-turnaround.
    5)    After all this, one might expect a fair discount to their account, but I have never been given one or offered one, even when I ask.
We spend more than $6,000.00 with you annually. This may not amount to a lot to you in the scheme of things, but I would hope you will care enough to rectify these issues so that we do not have to change carriers, or worse, look into possible legal options. I am sure you probably do not care and you say to yourself, “So what? This is only one customer,” but if you go online, you will see what legions of customers are saying. You might be the “big dog” now, but when you falter, and all companies with this low degree of customer service do, just remember that giants fall hardest of all.

    Fellow subscriber,
As I understand your post... you have issues with 2 different phone numbers.
    1. Line 1, You got lots of calls that weren't for you.
    2. Line 2, A robo-dialer is faking your number on caller-id when it dials out.
While I understand your frustration with this situation, I also understand why you weren't getting the help you wanted from Verizon. Having been in the phone industry since I was young and skinny (Mid 80's); I can confidently inform you that other than offering a new number, neither Verizon nor any other phone company can fix these issues, both caused entirely by a 3rd party.
You cited poor customer service... what did you expect from your phone company to do about the 3rd parties abusing your phone number?

  • I have had constant problems with my Verizon broadband internet service, and can only assume I will need to cancel my contract.

According to Verizon, my family is somehow using 15 to 16 GB of data per month on our unlimited data plan, sometimes more. This is a jump from 4 to 6 GB in the spring of 2012. We have done nothing to justify such a huge surge in data usage per month, but I don't seem to be able to get any satisfactory answer from Verizon as to what's going on. Our time spent on the Internet is no different than it's ever been. Last month, customer service tried to suggest that a virus we had had on one of our computers must have caused the computer to suck up data without our knowledge, but the virus is gone and our data usage just keeps getting worse. To make matters even more painful, such high "usage" causes Verizon to slow our UNLIMITED data service to such a snail's pace that we can't get anything substantial done online. And, for some reason, we now constantly lose our signal. We are connected via USB, which is a poor way to connect, granted. But it worked fine in the spring of this year. In fact, it was faster than anything we had had previously. Go figure? I tried to download Java last week, and the computer indicated it would take 15hrs to download. What a waste!
Apparently, my only option is to switch to MiFi (we are in a rural location lacking DSL) for my household. And this will cost me at least $60 more per month. Why, pray tell, would I want to pay more money to solve a problem that Verizon cannot satisfactorily explain to me if there are no guarantees MiFi will work any better? I cannot get my money back if it fails to improve our situation. And what about the supposed data usage? Am I supposed to believe that my kids' Facebook time combined with our internet surfing eats up 3 to 4 times as much data as it did only a few months ago? I don't think so. Something is not adding up here. Oh...I do have one other option. Home Fusion broadband added to our account for even more money per month.
Bottom line? Spend more money that I don't have for unreliable service, with what I believe to be bogus data usage charges. I think I just need to cancel Internet service, paying the fee for breaking my contract of course, and take my business elsewhere.
Anyone else having these sorts of problems? What have you done about it?

Regardless with what carrier your with you might have the same issue, My recommendation would be to get a router that will help you with viewing live traffic and keep a tally of your usage and any device connected to your internet connection.  You can go with the peplink balance 20 and be able to look at your traffic by the hour, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.  Look for trends, see what computers or devices are doing what I attached a screen shot so you can see an example of mine.  You can purchase the router at 3gstore

  • Do i need to get internet service with an internet provider?

Do i need to get internet service with an internet provider to use airport extreme or airport express?

Well, either that, or you could simply use your extreme or express to "borrow" your neighbour's WEP encrypted WiFi network..
OH wait.. I think I got you. Are you asking if you can use the bases for just a Lan and no outside connection?  You can use them without the internet. It's just an option.

  • Airport extreme with windows service pack 2

I have just recently bought a macbook pro laptop, & have been corresponding with a forum member about a wireless setup.
I want to have a wireless set up with a PC desktop with windows xp home service pack 2 that is stationed in the kitchen. This was recommended to me in this forum. Right now the PC has an Ethernet black box, with at&t DSL service. It has one yellow Ethernet cable coming from the black box to the PC & one grey DSL cord coming out of the black box & connects to a phone in the kitchen. I bought the laptop for my online classes so steady reliable internet service is crucial. Upon reading the specs of the airport extreme however got me a little concerned about which service pack I can use.
    Here is my question & comment from another member on this forum;
I just noticed a PC has to have windows service pack 3, I have service pack 2, will it work with service pack 2? I am reluctant to update to service pack 3, my story behind my reluctance; the last time I did it, my PC completely crashed, the hard drive died. It had to be replaced, & ever since I get a little yellow alert to update to service pack 3, but I have not done it out of fear of another meltdown. Right now it is the only computer in our house, & I need it for my online classes. Last summer when I tried the service pack 3 update, & subsequent PC meltdown, I had to go to a public computer lab to finish off an online class, so I do not want to go through this again.
    And this is what they said;
+That will give you wired internet access at the PC. Of course, the MacBook Pro will be wireless. I am not sure about the technical specifications required for the Airport. My initial reaction is that you should be fine to use the Airport as just a router with the PC with Service Pack 2. I think SP3 is just required for administration of the Airport using the Airport Utility for Windows. But, you could administer the Airport with your MBP. You may want to confirm this in the Airport forum unless somebody else here knows for sure! Sorry!+

Which would be more powerful & reliable? the newest airport extreme or the aiport with the 500GB time capsule?
Again, it will depend on what your networking requirements are. If we are talking about support for Time Machine backups, then only the Time Capsule (of the two options you listed) would work. Apple doesn't currently support these backups to drives attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station.
Would I be better off with something that is just for wireless internet? or a combo unit time capsule & airport?
If you don't have any networking gear now, then it may make better sense to go with a combination unit.

  • Best wireless modem/router for Comcast internet service?

    Hello!
I am looking to switch internet service from Verizon DSL to Comcast. I have a MacBook Pro using Airport Extreme (supports 802.11 a/b/g/n), and my other computer is an iMac (OS 10.5.8, iMac 6,1), with a printer and a Roku box (I'm also thinking about switching to Apple TV). All are currently set-up wirelessly with a combined modem/router.
I know that there is a list of a bunch of potentials on the Comcast website, but I'm looking for real experience from Mac users. Good, bad or neutral comments are appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Ken

Don't pay Comcast monthly for a router. Buy a router. A router is a router, the best routers are Cisco based rackmount devices. Honestly the AirPort Express and Extreme are amazing and work quite well with Apple products. Plus if you purchase one and get AppleCare on it you get AWESOME support from your friendly AppleCare advisors... sure as **** beats going to India and talking to Fred.
