Facebook hangs on Firefox

For the last 5-6 releases of Firefox, Facebook runs very slow and hangs repeatedly during scrolling. I have AdBlock Plus installed (for several years now), I tried uninstalling it and tried without it, but there was no change. Other sites work just fine. No issues on Google Chrome.
My system is an AMD PhenomII X4 @ 3.4 GHz with 8GB of RAM, nVidia GTS250 512MB RAM video card, Windows 8.1 64 bit up to date and Firefox 36.0.4.

It already looks like the drivers are up to date, however was there a difference if disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox from the Options > Advanced > General > uncheck: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Thank you for your answer, but disabling the hardware acceleration didn't solve the problem, the browser still hangs and becomes unresponsive when using FB. Any more ideas?

  • Facebook hang when adobe flash player is enabled, and doesnt when its not

Just as title, running facebook will cause firefox completely to hang, untill a "unresponsive script" message pops out after couple of minutes, disabling the flash player will fix this issue but yet again would disable using flash completely (its a bypass, not a solution)
I'm not having any sort of antivirus, or malware kind of programs installed (though I gave it in depth scan couple of weeks ago and its clean, i dont use anti's anymore because IMO it slows the computer dramaticly, and cause issues.)
when the "unresponsive script" message pops out, hitting "stop script" will load the site and it will unfreeze, the message itself wont pop that often so it takes a log time ending me to task kill it (because navigating in facebook will cause it to happen again) it feels like it happens just about when the chat loads, but I cant figure it out myself.
The flash itself works fine @youtube/other kinds of sites,
note that facebook loads fine on other browsers, such as internet explorer/chrome

Best is to allow Flash local storage globally and use the defaults.

  • Facebook messenger for Firefox doesn't show the chat tab

Hi. I have just installed Facebook messenger for Firefox, which was advertised in the Firefox start page. Here's the link for it: https://www.facebook.com/about/messenger-for-firefox?src=firefox_promo_2
I don't like the sidebar taking a chunk from my screen space, so I unchecked "show sidebar", and the only things left were a small tab on the botom right corner on the screen, which you could click to expand and show your friends, much like Facebook chat when you don't have the sidebar active. But for some reason it's gone now and I can't find how to activate it again. The chat still works, if someone talks to me their chat tab will appear even when I don't have any Facebook tabs open; just the friends list tab is gone. How do I make it return?
    Thank you!

Hmmm, apparently it integrates in a new way. You can try using either of these menu items to turn on the sidebar:
Firefox > Options > Facebook Messenger for Firefox
Tools > Facebook Messenger for Firefox (a sub-menu appears when enabled)
Then when you turn it off again, you get the sidebar-style list in the page. That doesn't seem to last forever; it might take some time to work out exactly how the feature works with the site.

  • Every page hangs with Firefox 8, there is often no exit, and if there is, clicking on it does nothing. I have to use cntrl, alt, delete to shut down every single time I use Firefox 8.

I couldn't even open Firefox for hours, then realized there was an update to 8. Once updated, the horrors began. I can't exit a single page with Firefox 8. Every page hangs. I have used cntrl, alt, delete like never before. I disabled the container.exe plug in for Firefox, and still have problems. There is no menu bar, there is often not even an exit button, but when there is, it doesn't work. These problems must be fixed, or I'll never use Firefox again.

    See "Hang at exit":

See "Firefox hangs when you quit it":

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • How can I email Facebook images from Firefox?

As a computer support person, I've switched many people from other browsers to Firefox, often touting that the Firefox interface is most similar to Internet Explorer than the other choices. This client's issue stumped me, however, and I haven't been able to come up with a solution for her. Rather than exploring other browsers, this is my last-ditch effort to come up with a Firefox solution.
In Internet Explorer browsing Facebook, people can right-click on an image and email the picture to someone (family, friends, etc.). I can find no way to duplicate this functionality in Firefox. I go to other websites (tested this on Yahoo!'s main page) and I can right-click in Firefox and email the picture. In Facebook, no dice. (This may be more a Facebook issue, but I want to check with you folks first.)
I can't find an Add-on that will do it. This seems strange, because apparently a lot of people like to have this ability. Any ideas or suggestions? DMS

Adding 2 Suggestions to above reply:
    * Right click on the image and ''copy image location''. Then use '''''insert>image''''' to embed as remote content
    * Right click and '''''copy image'''''. Then paste into the e-mail.
Make sure that you have the correct ''default e-mail service'' selected.

  • How to prevent a problen in ONE TAB from hanging ALL FIREFOX ?

The problem is that a problem causing a hang in one tab can hangup all of firefox so I can't do anything. For example, an unresponsive script invoked by one tab (one website) causes all of firefox to stop running., and I can't use the mouse or keyboard to close the one tab causing the problem. Then I have to kill/restart firefox entirely. There should be a way to kill individual tabs without stopping all of firefox. Is there ?

hello Sasco9000, first please make sure that the date, time & timezone are set correctly on your system. if this doesn't solve the issue (or it is already set properly), a possible solution depends on different factors:
    * what security software are you using?
    * what is the '''error code''' shown under ''technical details'' on the error page?
in case the error code equals ''sec_error_unknown_issuer'', please attempt to add an exception on the bottom of the error page - don't add it for real, but inspect the certificate (see the screenshot attached for instructions):
    * which '''issuer information''' does the certificate contain?
please report back with this information. thank you!

  • Facebook Video says Firefox "is not compatible, therefore no video Chat function.

Upgraded Windows 8 to 8.1. Since then the Video chat function does not appear as a selection when wanting to video with a person. Message says that, "the browser is incompatible". The video function worked fine in version 8. As I remember, Facebook uses the Skype video program. Is there any help for this issue. I am not the only one having this problem.

This sounds to me like Facebook is checking what version of Windows your are running, and does not yet recognize Windows 8.1 as an upgrade to Windows. This is kind of disappointing, first because it hasn't been a secret that Windows 8.1 is coming, and second because filtering by OS like this is kind of a bad practice.
Anyways, this is likely not an issue directly with Firefox. As a work around int he short term, you could cheat and change your user agent to tell Facebook you are on Windows 8 instead of Windows 8.1 with an addon like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-overrider/
