Facetime for the hearing impaired?

Hello:
I am simply wondering if there is an add-on or additional app that would let my hearing impaired 99 year old Grandmother read what I am saying if I am on Facetime with her.  I regularly talk to my family and my Mother occasionally gets my Grandmother on, but communication is rather hard since my Mom has to translate, so to speak.
I'm sure there is a simple answer to this, but I have gone through the app store and looked through all of the settings, but I must be missing something.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Greg

The other reply shows how to access "bootleg" Subtitles. For true Netflix Subtitles, they are accessbile from Macs since April 2010, but only on SOME titles. Sadly, Subtitles are NOT available on Apple TV, yet. Apparently it is up to Netflix to provide the software to Apple in order for Apple to add access for Subtitling on their products, including AppleTV. Netflix says they are "working" on other platforms (currently only for PC, Mac, Wii & PS3) but no timeline has been given. List of Netflix titles with Subtitling is here (currently 380+ titles):

  • HT5731 How can I choose an option to buy movies with captions for the hearing impaired?

Captions for the hearing impaired. Are they available when buying from iTunes ?

They are available, but it's the film studio that has to include them on a particular film.
Those that have closed captioning on them have CC against them on their description pages in the store e.g.
Whether a film has subtitles available on it should also be listed on its descrition page e.g. (from a different film to the above CC film) :

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV will put itself to sleep. I'm not sure what you needed to log into again, but you shouldn't have to. Do you have a little more detail about what happens.

    Click on CONTACT US
On the next screen, Left hand side, half way down there is an email option, but first you must choose you pay your bill monthly and click the button next to it. (Or below it. On my display it is below)
The next screen will load, but wait for it to fully load. Scroll to the bottom, THERE is the link to send an email and IF chat is open, there will be a box for that also. (It is rarely open)

  • Apple TV 2 - Can it display closed captions for the hearing impaired?

I have not seen a direct answer to this question anywhere, even on the web. If I buy a movie/TV show DVD, I get closed captions. If I rent or buy from iTunes or some other source, does this mean there are no closed captions to display, or does it mean that Apple TV 2 cannot display the closed captions? It is especially helpful with British shows. We use closed captions all the time for everything else. If it cannot be displayed, Apple TV 2 is largely useless for us. Note: many Boomers (we with the money to spend, not the 15 year olds!) have damaged hearing- they should be included in marketing.

The easiest way to find videos with closed captioning is to select Column Browser->Show Column Browser from the View menu in iTunes. Select a category and then look for titles displaying the CC icon. You can then rent them in iTunes or find them in the Menu in the ATV and rent them there.

I think that everything that he wants to do is very doable. It would be quite a project for someone to take on for him. If it is a popular hymnbook it may well be a welcome blessing/gift of love for many others as well if made available. As I would envision the project it would require either the sacrifice of a copy of the hymnal or the availability of a loose leaf version of the hymnal, so that the individual pages could be taken apart and scanned. The scanned pages could then be assembled into a pdf document that is easily readable on many apps available for the iPad. Better still would be to research if the publishers of the hymnal have not already created an electronic version of the book in pdf format. If the publisher has not already crossed this bridge, then their permission would legally need to be secured before starting such a project of copying their compilation of hymns. Even though they may not own the rights to an old hymn which is now in the public domain, they hold the rights to the layout and composition of the printed pages of their hymnal.
The Accessibilty settings in the iPad itself is capable of enlarging text for the visually impaired, as well as providing white text on a black background.

  • Just used my FaceTime for the first time, and my audio kept cutting in and out.? Why is it doing that? Or what's causing it? HELP!

I tried facetiming for the first time and my audio kept cutting in and out.. WHY!? It was so annoying. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Connection? Thanks!

Do you have a Corp. Exchange account on your phone? I ask, because the requirement to encrypt an iPhone backup can be enforced by a profile installed on your phone when setting up the Exchange account.

  • I am trying to run facetime for the first time, marks an error, I am trying to run facetime for the first time, marks an error

Hi! Need help to run facetime, for the first time.
An error occurs everytime I try, I quit as its says, but not working

    Hello Vivmex,
It sounds like you are getting the following message, "An internal FaceTime error occurred: There was a problem with FaceTime. You need to quit and open FaceTime again."
This message comes up if you double click on the FaceTime icon on the dock.  If you single click the FaceTime icon on the dock, FaceTime should launch normally:
    Symptoms
When opening FaceTime from the Dock, the following alert message may appear:
"An internal FaceTime error occurred. There was a problem with FaceTime. You need to quit and open FaceTime again."
    Resolution
Click the FaceTime icon in the Dock one time, then wait for the application to finish opening.
    Additional Information
This can happen if you attempt to open FaceTime a second time while it is already loading, such as by clicking the FaceTime Dock icon more than once.
You can find the full article here:

  • Is there a way to switch back to the old color scheme for the keypad? The new black-on-white color scheme is more difficult to see and use for the visually impaired.

Is there a way to switch back to the old color scheme for the keypad? After upgrading to ios 6, the keypad switched to a black-on-white color scheme.  I have a severe visual impairment and found the previous white-on-black color scheme much easier to see and use.
The inverted colors option doesn’t make things look all that better.    My dad, who does not have any serious vision problems, has put off upgrading his iphone because of the color scheme changes.

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

    Hello:
I like the new browser, but I do not know how to make the menus any larger. Currently I have modified the fonts in XP to display larger fonts but when I installed Safari I did not neem to make a difference. I can make the pages larger with "Make text bigger" but the menus stay the same size.
Am I doing something wrong here?!
    Thanks

I just want to thank you for taking the time to reply. I never thought of a shuffle and it's a fantastic idea! Just turn it on and I don't have to worry about settings, like you said. They don't have a lot of memory, but I could get a few and mark them somehow as to the type of music---jazz, rock, etc. Thanks for the great idea!
It's very kind of you to write back----
You're right---it's not easy knowing I"ll be losing my eyesight. Believe it or not, I've been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy also, so I'll be losing the ability to walk and see. Therefore the thought of losing my music was almost too much to deal with.
I'll go to the feedback site you listed and give my suggestion there also. I called the company, and was told by a rep that this site (discussion board) was the only place I could email or write to them about my idea/thought.
You've given me 2 good ideas--thank you again for your kindness.
    Have a good day!
