Fail gracefully with missing DLLs

Hello again all you helpful forum-goers!
The Situation:
I have an application which includes a few subVIs which call two DLLs via Call Library Function Node VIs.  After building the application and putting the executable and the two DLLs on another computer, I tested what happens when the DLLs are mis-named or otherwise not present.
The Current Unfortunate Results:
What happens is that the Loading VIs LabVIEW dialog comes up, and on top of that a standard open/save dialog box saying "Find the shared library named MyDLL.dll".  If I then press Cancel, another dialog box comes up saying "LabVIEW: Resource not found.  An error occurred loading VI 'UseMyDLL.vi'.  LabVIEW load error code 3: Could not load front panel."  When I press OK to that, I get the same dialog box, once for every VI that calls the DLL.  After pressing OK a few more times, I get a list of every place the subVIs that call the DLLs are used, with lines like "Missing subVI UseMyDLL.vi in VI MyTopLevel.vi.".  At the same time my front panel appears, but with the toolbar showing and broken run arrow.
What I Want to Happen:
What I was hoping would happen is something like a dialog appearing asking to find the DLL, and if Cancel was pressed a dialog saying "MyApp.exe could not be run because the file "MyDLL.dll" is missing.", and then nothing else happening or being shown.  Honestly, I'd rather it not even prompt the user to find the file.  It feels very unpolished for a distributed application.
The Question(s):
Does anyone know a good way to get results closer to what I want to happen?  The best idea I've been able to come up with is to dynamically load the VIs which rely on the DLLs, so that I can programmatically verify the DLLs are there before loading those VIs, and exit gracefully using my own code.  Would there be any problem with using Call by Reference or Invoke Node to call the VIs when I want the DLLs to remain in memory once they are loaded to save their state, and some of the VIs which call the DLLs need to remain in memory because they are functional global variables?  Seems like there might be some gotchas there.  I'd be happy to hear any other possible solutions to the missing DLL behavior problem, especially solutions that do not require as much of a rewrite of the code.  ;-)
Thank you as always for your time!

Nice job on testing some unusual conditions. Just having the mindset is a good thing.
I don't think that the nice-loading behavior you want can be applied globally because sometimes DLLs are loaded by dynamically called code and that shouldn't affect the application, but it probably could be applied to static code called by the main VI in the executable.
That said, it might not be worth it, because this is a relatively rare occurence. If you put the idea in the idea exchange I will vote for it, but I wouldn't lose any sleep if NI didn't spend any resources on it.
You could load the VIs dynamically as you suggested, or you could configure the CLN nodes themselves to accept a dynamic path to the DLL, but I would argue that this problem is rare enough not to warrant changing the code. If you really care that much, you could load your application through a start up VI or EXE which will test for the presence of the DLLs and only if all of them are found will then dynamically load the main VI or EXE.
Try to take over the world!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features(Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    and paste into:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error.

  • PC Suite fails to start - 'ConnAPI.DLL was not fou...

I'm running Windows Vista and PC Suite version 7.0.8.2 fails to open up due to the following message: 'This application has failed to start because ConAPI.DLL was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.'. I have re-installed several times and the same error message occurs. This started happening after I installed some other software but I'm not sure which, as I am building my new laptop and am installing a lot of software. It might have been Quicken 2008 but I'm not sure. A Google search for this issue reveals that possibly Adobe software might be the culprit. I do have Adobe Photoshop Elements and I did move the NokiaManager.mox file out of that product as recommended by others, but this didn't fix the problem. I also uninstalled 'PC Connectivity Solution' in order to try to fix the issue, since that software contained ConnAPI.dll (which I presume is also from Nokia and I'm not sure what installed that.) After uninstalling PC Connectivity Solution and reinstalling Nokia PC Suite, I got the same error. This time, I believe ConnAPI.dll is not on my system and clearly Nokia PC Suite did not install it even though it requires it!
I could switch to some other connectivity software but I have Lotus Organizer and want to sync. with that and I don't believe anything else syncs with Lotus Organizer these days.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what is the solution?
    Thanks in advance.

Here is the solution. BUT It does not work for windows 7 I did not find solution form Nokia!!!! ???? Basszák meg! Connapi.dll is a connectivity application programming interface (API) developed and used by Nokia for their PC connectivity solutions. The most common usage of connapi.dll is through the Nokia PC Suite software. Although this dll file is not a critical system component, if you are using phone-computer connectivity on a regular basis, you should avoid messing with connapi.dll. You can find the file online if you delete or damage it by accident, but the possibility of a corrupt or infected download is likely as you are never too sure of the quality of a dll file download. Most non-system dll file names are used by virus authors to create trojans and worms, Errors occurring in relation to the connapi.dll file are usually because of disabling, missing or damaging the particular file. The most common errors and solutions are discussed below. 1) “ConnAPI.dll not found. Try reinstalling the application” Uninstall all Nokia software, especially “PC Connectivity Solution” - the problem is caused because of it. Then, reinstall Nokia PC Suite and everything will be all right. 2) “ConnAPI.dll is not a valid windows image” Connapi.dll is not a standard Windows file, so this error should actually be ignored. If the message persists, simply delete the file, uninstall all Nokia software, and reinstall a fresh, updated version. 3) “Connapi.dll is missing and the program cannot run” The reason for this error is that you have uninstalled Nokia software from your computer, but the system still recognizes it as existing. Go to - Start > Run >type msconfig > Startup Tab – and remove any references to Nokia software. Reboot the system. For repairing the connapi.dll file, always visit the Nokia web site, obtain the latest PC Suite version, and do a fresh installation in your computer. It is best and safest way to keep your registry and system problem free.

  • Trying to reinstall CS5.5 Master Collection from DVD media on Windows 7 64 bit - setup.exe fails due to msxml3.dll error PDApp message [FATAL] PIM - Failed to Create XML instance : DOMDocument40 ADXML::initWithXMLPath Error:80040154

If anyone is able to solve this they are a genius (or I am doing something very stupid!)
I am trying to reinstall CS5.5 Master Collection from DVD media on Windows 7 64 bit PC but setup.exe fails due to a msxml3.dll error.
Following a big bundle of recent Windows 7 updates, I started getting 'bad image' msxml3.dll error messages when opening any CS5.5 master collection program (Eg Premiere / Photoshop / Illustrator / Dreamweaver). Following advice on some threads here I tried uninstalling and then using the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool to clean up install, then reinstalling from my original DVD media.
Whenever I try using run setup.exe from installtion disc 1 the installing fails due to 'Missing files'. I have also tried dowloading trial versions and runing setup.exe fro mthe downloaded files but i still get the same message.
I have searched the forum and others have experienced this error but none of the solutions I have found seem to be working for me - as many seem to relate to download installations whereas I am installing from original DVD media (which worked fine before on the same PC)
These are the FATAL messages from the PDApp log
    12/11/2014 15:29:27 [FATAL] PIM - Failed to Create XML instance : DOMDocument40 ADXML::initWithXMLPath Error:80040154
12/11/2014 15:29:27 [FATAL] Setup - Could not initialize ADXML object
12/11/2014 15:29:27 [FATAL] Setup - Unable to initialize. Error parsing setup.xml file
The PDApp troubleshooting seems to indicate that this is caused by error in downloads but I am getting it with both original media DVD and downloads.
I have also tried using my logon (which has admin privileges) and under our main admin account - and I get the same errors.
Is a clean install of Windows 7 + CS5.5 my only option?
Any help / info / advice / solutions very much appreciated! I have spent the last 2 days trying to sort this out and seem to be getting nowhere.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply kglad - much appreciated.
I have already tried that option (along with downloading files) as it was one of the solutions mentioned on other threads, but that also failed.
    Any other ideas?

Here is a solution that worked for a user who also had a problem with iTunes Software Support. This thread was for a win32 version, but Maybe this is the problem for both of you?:
IT appears that AppleApplicationSupport.msi, is not opening and installing properly.
Download and SAVE iTunesSetup.exe, where you can find it.
    Then:
    1. Download and install WinRAR.
    2. Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe icon and choose "Open with WinRAR".
    3. Once the EXE is opened in WinRAR, double-click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and when the installer window is open choose "Repair".
    4. Done! You can now run iTunes normally.

I simultaneously had a problem with Dreamweaver.
I think all this is caused by an Side By Side configuration issue.
I've tried to do following steps:
    -redistibrutable 2008 c++ package geinstall
    -system recoverage tool
    -reinstall cs4 master collection
-uninstall master collection, clean up, install reeware acrobat reader
-uninstall acrobat reader, ccleaner register issues resolver , also older than 24 uur , reboot,  install acrobat reader freeware
-revo uninstall tool to remove acrobat
none of the above actions were successful.
What could u suggest or give as a solution.
Atm i'm using an altarnative pdf-reader.
But as i bought the master collection,
i'd rather have my adobe acrobat reader pro and dreamweaver working.
    Thanks in advance,
    With friendly regards
    Anton

    Hi Anton
I am sorry, I do not have an answer just a similar problem.
I am no expert, but all these manifest files are to ensure that different developers can ensure that the appropriate versions of common libraries are used by particular versions of their software.
Deatils are below. The original problem was a corrupted manifest file, probably due to a disk error. This resulted in several programs failing to run. In particular I was unable to access backup on my Windows Home Server. From the logs I was able to identify the manifest file in error and located a copy of a file with the same name on another of my computers. Using notepad I then changed the file causing the problem to match the file on the other computer.
This appeared to resolve all my problems.
When the Acrobat Reader updated itself, however, the"failed to load core DLL" message appeared. Simply uninstalling all adobe programs and re-installing makes no difference.
If you have the solution please post.
If not, I will continue to research this problem.
    Very best wishes
    Graham

Any ideas would be appreciated.  I have read that some have disabled the warning, but I cannot figure out how to disable a warning.
    Thanks.

    Hi Ivan,
A package would not fail due the warning itself, speaking of which means the account executing it is not privileged to load the Perf counters, and should thus be safely ignored.
    To fix visit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2496375/en-us
So, the package either has an error or it actually runs.

Have you tried the steps in article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926 ?
In particular, you may want to follow the steps to "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer" and "Empty your Temp directory and restart". Sometimes it also helps to follow the steps to "Disable other conflicting software" prior to following the first two I mentioned.
