Failed formatting

Does anybody know what the following message means?
"Formatting was not successful. The image exceeds the maximum allowed size for a dual-layer configuration.
What does it mean by IMAGE?
Thanks

javp,
Dual layer discs can be quite difficult to eliminate all the problems and finally come up with a work flow that works consistantly. To have a chance for this to all work, you need to follow the steps much more precisely than you would have to for single layer projects.
First thing I would do is eliminate as much of the encoding work that DVDSP has to do, so that it only has to work on compiling your project correctly. Adding to it's work the task of encoding your video sets you up for problems.
Encode your video content with compressor, and encode your audio to dolby digital of some sort (generally 2 channel ac3 between 192 and 224 kbps). Leave DVDSP to encode only menus and or slideshows/stills.
Make sure you have plenty of chapter marks somewhere near the midportion of you content so that you have at least one of them in a legal boundry for a dual layer break. If you don't have one in a legal boundry, your options will be grayed out (since there isn't one to select).
DVD(+)DL media is the way to go. Avoid the , it does not work well, and Apple even suggest you shouldn't use it. The media is preformatted for OTP; your project should be OTP.
Build your project and format separately. I would format to an image file to your harddrive primarily for the reason that as you are working the bugs out, you will know (without wasting an expensive disc) whether or not your project will actually format successfully. If the image file is created successfully, then you know that things are set up properly to output to disc from within DVDSP if that's your choice. The image file or the video_ts folder can be used in Toast to do your burn instead of DVDSP.
Your burner is critical as well. You need a burner that can either be directed to set the book type for your media to ROM; or better yet, a burner that is preset to do exactly that with dual layer media (the Pioneer burners are set to that). Setting the book type to ROM increases the capatibility greatly for your dual layer discs to play on a set top player.

  • WD external harddisk not recognised after failed format

    Hi folks,
So I have an old WD 320GB harddisk I pulled from an old windows acer 5535 I wasn't using, I tried formatting it to OSX journaled so i could use it to back my friends mac up. The drive was initially readable and showed my windows 7 and files I had on there.
I left it to work for a couple of hours, when I came back it said it had failed. I have since read about the 'correct' way to format this drive.
The drive no longer shows up in disk utility or in system profiler under USB.
I'm plugging in using a USB SATA enclosure.
The mac I tried to format on is an old white unibody running 10.6.8, it's not recognised on my imac running 10.8.4.
The disk spins and the green light on the enclosure is lit.
Have I killed it or can I save it with some more powerful software?
    Cheers!
    Karl,

Yes i thought this too, problem is my old acer's GPU is problematic and will only work now and again, I think it needs re-flowing. I'll put the hard drive back and try to get it booted up and see what happens. I'm guessing it's no good now anyway after the mac tried to format it for a while.
    Will report back.
    Karl.

  • Failed formatting of new hard drive

I installed a new Caviar SE 120Gbyte SATA II hard drive in my PowerMacG5. This will serve as a back-up to the start-up HD. When I started up the computer, it was not recognized. I used the "erase" and "partition" options in disk utility to no avail ("error" on each attempt). Any clues as to why I cannot format the second hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Failed format of external drive

I was reformatting the drive in my Time Capsule using Disk Utility and the formatting hung mid-way. There's no way to cancel it, so I did a Force Quit. Now the drive won't mount at all. Where do I go from here? Can't use Disk Utility.

You did a force quit on a format?  Yes, thats horrible.
Sounds like you had a failure to format before the force quit due to HD failure.
You corrupted the directory to be sure while it was being constructed.
Where to go is replacing the HD within your TC.   This is the nature of hard drives.

  • Formatting disk under SunOS 5.6

It so happens that my company's customers mainly use other UNIX vendors, so I don't do much with SunOS/Solaris. So please excuse my ignorance. Anyway, I've got a customer with nearly 10 year old Sparc 5's and Sparc 10's, I believe. He's looking at trying to allocate capital expenditure sometime in a year or two to upgrade, but needs to hang on to what he's got for the time being.
He originally had an internal 2 gig drive and an external 2 gig drives in these machines, for a total of 4 gigs. Some of the drives are starting to fail, so we figured we would upgrade them to single drives, like around 9 gigs. He found some surplus IBM UltraStar 9ES 39130W 9 gig drives. That would replace his two drives and double his space, which is more than enough for what he is using.
Customer got some of these drives surplus somewhere. One had previously been in a Sun machine and had already been Sun formatted. But another one was unformatted as far as SunOS was concerned. The one that had already been formatted, I've had no problems with. I rebuilt file systems and its working fine. But the one that isn't formatted, I'm having trouble with getting it formatted.
Looking at what SunOS says the drive is on the one that works, it says it has 8186 cyliners + 2 reserved, 10 heads, 218 sectors per cylinder. But I try to tell the format command that this other drive is like that, and format it, and it fails says reserved failed, format failed.
I went to Hitachi's site (as they bought IBM's drive business) and found the specs on the drive, and it really has several zones, with different numbers of sectors per zone. I don't know if SunOS needs to know this, or if the drive hides the different zones and makes it look like all the cylinders are the same. If the OS needs to know about the zones, I don't know how to enter this data. In the prompts that format gave me, it did ask a few questions about zones, and so maybe I need to answer these questions right and don't know how.
But one other thing I noticed is that when I use the inquiry command, I see a different revision between the working drive and the non-working drive. So, maybe it is a revision issue. Here is what the non-working drive says:
    format> inquiry
    Vendor: IBM
    Product: DDRS-39130W
    Revision: S92A
And here is what the working drive says:
    format> inquiry
    Vendor: IBM
    Product: DDRS-39130W
    Revision: S71D
Now it is also possible that the drive I'm not able to get to work is defective, since the drives he got as surplus, it may be that my only problem is that he's got a bad drive. So, I'm guessing that there could be 1 of 3 problems:
    1. The revision S92A is not compatible with my customer's systems.
    2. Customer got a defective drive, and the problem is not related to the revision.
    3. There is some secret to getting these drives formatted under SunOS (prehaps relating to the zones) and I don't know the secret, and the problem is not related to the revision.
Anybody have any suggestions? Sorry for my ignorance.

Anybody have any suggestions? Sorry for my
ignorance. You may be correct in your assumptions regarding a failed drive. However, you might want to try this command to see what it can do for you assuming the drive in question is drive 1 which, in a Sparc 5, is the bottom internal drive with drive 3 being the top drive (boot drive). Anyway, regardless of what drive it is, you can boot the Sparc 5 into standalone using the Sun Solaris installation CD using the following command after you have connected the drive and noted the drives target number. At the OBP "ok" prompt with the Solaris installation CD in the CD drive enter:
    NOTE
MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH TARGE THE DRIVE IS BECAUSE THIS COMMAND WILL ERASE THE DRIVE!!!!!!!!
    ok boot cdrom -s
    At the # prompt enter:
    # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s2 bs=16 count=16
You should receive a display of in and out numbers then the # prompt. If the drive target is 1 then change the "t0" in the command to "t1". Remember, the "t" in the above command is the drive target number and the "s2" is the label slice or, overlap, and this will be reset to the drives size. Partition under format can do this as well which, not knowing what drive target you have put the drive as, is difficult to indicate in the command syntax. Simply run format at the # prompt and select the drive then enter partition. Enter print and note the partitions that are currently on the drive, if any. Select the appropriate partition to delete and when asked the beginning number press enter and when asked ending number enter "0" (zero) and press enter. Do this for every slice and when complete, enter "print" and it should show you a clean drive. Create a partition on the drive you want then save the drive label. After this enter label and save then exit and create a new files system using newfs and the appropriate target number.
I've used the dd command to zero the label in order for Solaris to see the drives complete size. I've also used format to delete and create partitions then use newfs to create a new file system without problems. Sparc 5's and 20's are similiar with the exceptions of the montherboards in the way the drives are viewed by OBP. I assume you have run "probe-scsi" and both drives in question show up properly. This will only tell you that the OBP can talk to the OEM info on the drive, as you probably already know. It's up to Solaris to use the drive and look at the label for drive size and partition sizes. That's where dd or format/partition comes into play. I've run into problem with Sparc 5/20's that will not see a specific drive types/OEM. This may be because they are not single ended but Ultra SCSI's which should be written on the drives physical label on top of the drive. Invalid or unsupported drives will usually, not always, give you an errorious display at the OBP prompt using probe-scsi, of course depending on the OBP version.
Good luck and remember, any use of the above command(s) is at your own risk and be aware that using these commands can and will erase the entire contents of various slices and or the entire drive.

  • Dead Formatting Board for P2015d Laserjet

    Hi,
I have a P2015d Laserjet with a dead formatting board. The factory board was damaged when the USB cord plugged into it was yanked too hard, pulling the USB port off the board. I tried to re-solder it on, and while it initially worked, the board eventually gave out producing the "solid lights" error: At start up the paper jam, low toner, low paper and printing lights (or some subset thereof) light up and stay lit, the printer doesn't appear on the network and none of the control buttons respond.
I understand this to indicate a failed formatting board, so I bought a refurbished formatting board (for about $80) from a positively-reviewed seller but, after putting the board in, the problem persists.
I have also tried baking both boards in the oven (multiple times) to fix the solder (c.f. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26wrN9fGpNA)
The question is whether there could be any other problems within the printer that could produce this error or that could be frying my formatter boards?
I may have bought a lemon replacement formatter, but being already $80 in the hole I'm reluctant to spend another $140 buying a replacement board straight from HP (throwing good money after bad, as it were).

    Hello fmhoyt,
The product you have is a commercial printer. I suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support for a better chance at finding a solution.

  • Long Error Message when I burn to a DVD

I created a video in iMovie. Open the Packaged Contents and sent the .mov to compressor.
I set compressor to one of its preset DVD format: Best Quality 150 minutes.
Since the video is 2 hours and 45 mins - it took compressor 6 hours to convert to a MPEG2.M2V file along with an .AC3 file.
I then imported those 2 assests into DVDSP - green light since they are already rendered.
I checked the DVD Simulator and everything is perfect.
The final size of my video project says 4.3GB on the right corner of DVDSP.
If I use a standard 4.7GB Blank DVD - it tells me that it wont fit.
So I put in a Dual Layer Blank DVD. When it finishes I get the following message:
    Formating Failed
Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range.
Please help me! What am I doing wrong?

Did you remember to set the option to allow DVDSP to automatically insert the layer break point marker? If not, go and do so. Otherwise, create a chapter marker just over the halfway point on your project and set it as the layer break point.
You might also want to check your preferences... in the track section, check 'fix invalid markers on build'. It shouldn't be an issue at the moment, but it won't hurt to do it.
You also ought to see how big those assets really are - calculate the combined file size using your finder (and not in DVDSP). If it is over 4.3Gb then either compress the footage again to a smaller file size (lower the data rate) or go ahead with your DL disc.

  • Cannot install OS X Lion after new seagate hybrid HDD install

    I just installed new seagate hybrid hdd (STBD1000400) in my early 2011 13" Mac Book Pro after stock drive failed;
    formatted it as mac os extended (journaled);
    downloaded lion installer and copied it to external with OS X Lion bootable drive;
    started computer from external drive;
    ran lion installer;
"Install Failed: OS X could not be installed on your computer. OS X can't be installed on the disk (null) because a recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more"
I reduced partition size and same error. Any suggestions

Remove the SSd from inside the case and connect it to that same Mac with a SATA to USB adapter, one that has its own AC power supply (Not a USB BUS power adapter), and try to install Lion on it.
I am suspecting the cable that goes from the drive to the logic board is faulty which is very common.
If the drive works fine outside the system, IE you can install Lion on it and it creates the Recovery HD partition and you can boot and run the system from it then is is more than likely the cable.
One other thing to do is after you Repartition the drive in disk utility grab the bottom right hand corner of the partition layout area and drag it up a little shrinking that partition by a couple of 100MBs to 1-2GBs and try the install again.
There was a bug in some Macs that for some reason with the whole drive included in the primary partition the OS X installer couldn't create a Recovery HD. You don't have to create a second partition, you can just leave it as Free Unpartitioned space. If you can then successfully install Lion you can then Drag the corner back down to put the free unpartitioned space back into the main partition.

  • Startup problems and many other problem... APPLE CARE DON'T FUNCTION !!!!

Hi, and sorry for my bad english...
I have imac 27" refurbished bought on september 2010. When startup process proceed correctly and i can use the computer, there are many many many "blocks" of normal operating: it appears the colored circle and the system is always "busy", although there are no application open!!! When skype is open, it always lost the already saved password. Safari lost all the login saved password. I can't drag files into the basket or create a folder! (message error).
But the big problem is: startup process failure almost always!!! Startup is ok only if the computer was off during some hours. After the first startup, i can't restart (manual or automatic restart, in any case...) it appears green screen with the green apple, and the rotating cirle forever.....
So, i have tried many solution:
    - check and repair HD using utility disk: FAILED
    - check and repair permits using utility disk: FAILED
    - format the HD using utility disk with OsX dvd: FAILED
    - reinstall OS X: FAILED
I gave the iMac at applecare centre to repair, two times!! 2 TIMES in 1 month !!
    - first time: replaced HD
    - second time: replaced mother board
In both times, the repairs DON'T FIX THE PROBLEMS....
THE PROBLEMS REMAIN THE SAME (like a led zeppelin song...)
So, i think: maybe the cause was not the HD, maybe not the mother board... WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?????
Even the autorized apple assistance centre can't find e repair the problem, what i have to do???
I think that Apple should replace the product or refund me...
but, i know, APPLE THINK DIFFERENT...
    help me

    thank you den.thed!
But, i have already called Apple Support... they say to me "deliver your mac at an apple assistance centre"... for 2 times, and tomorrow i will do it again...
I'd like to find in this forum some answers about some little questions. I try to do it:
    1) when i try to initialize "Macintosh HD" appears this message: "Disk initialize failed - POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory". WHY? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
    2) If i try to reinstall OS X appears. "IMPOSSIBLE TO INSTALL MAC OS X ON COMPUTER". WHY?
    Thank you very much!

i try to update my phone software to the last ver 40.0.005 but the problem still !
    what can i do ?
and what u think the problem is? software or hardware ?
btw im sure that ther is no virus especially i format the phone (hard format )
    regards

    It could be two reasons:
    1. A system file on your card is corrupted, maybe a file for the task manager app. To check, remove the card, perhaps replace it with a newly formatted one and try to recreate the problem. If the problem does not occur if there is no card or using a newly formatted one, you need to either run a diskcheck on your old card, or if that fails, format it.
    2. RAM issues. Some of your apps are memory leaking, and you arent able to manage your RAM properly. I would advise you to Google for tutorials on signing apps and look for Memcheck and KillMe.

Wait- I thought that MP3 files were smaller than WMA files? Is that not correct?
Nope, it's not correct and this is a common misunderstanding. For the same bit-rate MP3 and WMA have pretty much the same file size. What is different though is at lower bit-rates (around say 64 kbit/s) WMA seems to give better sound quality than a similar bit-rate MP3. Whereas at higher bit-rates (around say 92 kbit/s and higher) MP3 seems to give better sound quality than a similar bit-rate WMA. Some people will dispute this though, which is why it's always better to listen for yourself.
I do care about quality as long as it doesn't sound like I recorded it off the radio but for the most part I want to make sure that my files on my player aren't larger than they have to be--to open more space and also make the player work less hard therefore (I hope) extending the battery life. I suppose I could always blank my MP3 (Creative Jukebox Zen 2.0) and just start over and put in only the songs that I really really want and see if the battery life lasts longer but my main concern is doing all I can to make my playback time increase.
The number of files on the player DOES NOT affect the battery life, which is often another misconception. What does affect the battery life is the bit-rate of the files as you play them. You can see the difference from my battery curve thread, but it isn't as dramatic as you might think.
As before, make sure you create some test files and listen for yourself. Trust your own ears as to what sounds best to you.

  • Custom RTP Payload Types in JMF

I have a completely non-audio/video content type that I've sourced from an SVG based whiteboard, which generates a Media Locator. Instantiating a DataSource via the Manager from this Media Locator grabs the correct whiteboard from a static list, and generates a series of controls for how often full updates of the board are sent, collision handling, etc. (Works)
This generates a custom Format output which is basically the SVG's XML representation (Works)
Feeding this into a processor, you can request BZIP compression of this data to minimize the transmission bandwidth (works)
Further feeding this data into a a custom packetizer class breaks the data into chunks, and adds FEC packets to the stream when the buffer has to be broken into 2 or more chunks. Output is a derivative of the earlier custom format. (Works)
Muxing this data back together gets you a custom DataSource of type "fec.rtp", which technically could handle any data type, but only advertises support for my custom packetized data formats. (Muxer is based on RTPSyncBufferMux - Works)
Here's where things are getting frustrating. Calling com.sun.media.rtp.RTPSessionMgr.formatSupported (part of RTPSyncBufferMux) will tell you that I've correctly registered these custom formats for RTP transmission, but attempting to create a sendStream gives this error:
javax.media.format.UnsupportedFormatException: Format of Stream not supported in RTP Session Manager
    at com.sun.media.rtp.RTPSessionMgr.createSendStream(RTPSessionMgr.java:1104)
    at com.sun.media.rtp.RTPSessionMgr.createSendStream(RTPSessionMgr.java:1262)
This is extremely frustrating to put it mildly to have gotten this far and not be able to proceed, but I'm smack up against a brick wall at this point, and pressed for time to get this done. Basically I just want RTP Session Manager to take one buffer at a time and send it over the network. The FEC Depacketizer handles the work of reassembling the chunks, and passing along the data once it has enough to reconstruct a full buffer. (Uses an expiring cache so the data goes away automatically if too much is dropped to reconstruct a full buffer)
My gut tells me there's some sort of helper that processes the dataSource, and hands data to the RTP Session Manager in a way that it understands that it has a "single packet chunk" (I've seen some classes in the com.sun.media tree that suggest as much to me) but I haven't figured this part out yet. Does anyone have experience enough with this particular API to point me in the right direction?
Is there any good documentation for the com.sun.media tree incidentally? I'm using a LOT of helper classes from in there because once you look at the source, it's easy to see how useful they are, but it's a pain to dig through 5 or 6 classes to find out what I need to override and what I shouldn't touch.

Switched everything over to using RTPManager, and found I had to register the type with each individual instance, instead of just doing it once. The resulting exception is now further down in the RTPSessionMgr source, which I'm assuming is progress, though that's a dangerous assumption.
