Failing LAN connections

We have a problem Apple and us.
I have been having problems connecting to a remote file server using Pathfinder. I have narrowed down the problem to this. The connection will not work if you connect using the servers IP address and Path Finder will quit. However if you have a symbolic link for the server and click that the connection establishes correctly.
Obviously a Path Finder problem ? BUT it is not.
In my every day work I use Omnis Studio to connect to a Data File on the file server. Today Omnis started quitting as it tried to establish a connection to its data file on the server.
Now here is the thing. If I put a symbolic link to the Data File on my desktop and direct Omnis Studio to this then the connection establishes and works flawlessly

Simple answers
afp of course
an airport network
a Netopia wireless router.
Why then can I connect over exactly the same configuration when I use a
symbolic link but not when the application uses an IP address.??
Over to you - may be you can figure it out !

  • Error Code 10 Intel 82579LM LAN connection on Portege R830-13C

After recent Windows 7 32 Bit update, the LAN connection is failing to start (Code 10) under device manager
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
I have tried uninstalling drivers / rolling back / and installing the following files from Toshiba support pages, but does not resolve the issue.

How do I get Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection on Portege 830 -13C to work?
    (wireless is fine)

    Hi
Error Code 10 is generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device and usually its caused by outdated or corrupted drivers.
Therefore I think that driver installation should help to sort out this issue.
    I would recommend doing this:
    - Go to device manager and uninstall the LAN driver
    - Reboot the notebook but dont install the driver
    - Install the CCleaner and clean the registry
    - Reboot the notebook once again
    - Then go to device manager, choose the LAN card (Ethernet controller) and install the downloaded driver
As option I would recommend testing the LAN driver from Intel page.

I'm at a loss. and I've googled my little heart out.  Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums - and thanks for a great initial post, all the needed information seems to be here.
Specifically, the following error from wpa_supplicant will most likely be best to dig into:
wlp3s0: failed to initialize driver interface
I see several results of this error in a google search, but none of them quickly translated into solutions yet.  To get some more information on it, could you run the same wpa_supplicant command, but with the verbose debugging flag "-dd" and post the ouput here?
I don't have a intel wireless card, so I don't know what the diagnostic signs are for the problem addressed in the wiki, but you may want to try the modprobe options shown in this section of the wiki.
EDIT: there is a similar but unresolved thread on these forums here which points to using the -D flag for wpa_supplicant to specify other drivers.  I was thinking this too upon my first reading, but I don't fully understand what these are so I was reluctant to suggest it.  It certainly can't hurt anything to use the command in the wiki to see which drivers are available, then try each one.
EDIT 2: and this thread seems to indicate that the -D flag driver specification is the right solution.  So start here with the -D flag and only if that fails follow up with my initial debugging suggestions.

  • LAN Connections Drop WRT150N

Purchased and installed last Wednesday. Wired and wireless LAN connections have dropped twice since then. Can't access 192.168.1.1 at all, for example.
EasyLink shows message "Different Network Detected". Attempting to use dialogs fails, however, since the router isn't responding.
If I unplug the router, wait, and the restore power, LAN connectivity is restored.
    Firmware is up-to-date.
I expect occasional situations like this, but the frequency is troublesome. Any suggestions?

I have just got this router yesterday. It did this right out of the box. After an hour or so the connection would just drop. For everything. Some other topic on this site suggested power surges for a similar problem. I moved my power supply to somewhere less crowded and have had continuous internet for about an hour now.
I'll let you know if it worked.

  • No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1update

Today i tried to solve a big issue after updating my AppleTV's to 5.1.1 (actual version: AppleTV3,1_5.1_10A406e_Restore.ipsw). After updating my Apple TV´s, they could not connect to  the Apple activation server. No Home Sharing was adjustable and also logging in iTunesStore was not possible. The update I have done via LAN cable, and I changed  nothing in my network configuration. The network (networkadress via DHCP) is indeed set up by default in the AppleTV automatically. Nevertheless, nothing went. Then I removed the network cable and made a reset of the AppleTV and tried to connect via Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi, he finds the activation server and everything works as it should. Home Sharing, iTunes, streaming. However, once the network cable is plugged in and the Apple TV is restarted, it is again not possible to get access the iTunesStore. Home Sharing is not possible. The networkcable are fine. Both MacBook, as well as my TVs have internet connection over the same network cable. If I unplug the network cable from the AppleTV again, anything goes. Only via WLAN, but it's just too slow to stream data from my Mac. I have this "strange behavior" on 3 AppleTV 3.Gen., which are in the apartment. The previous iOS-Version on the same network cables, worked great. Can anyone reproduce the problem? Or have I now 3 bricked devices? I tried to downgrade over itunes. But this is not possible anymore. I installed 3 times the update. But nothing goes. Please can anybody help me.

I found another link titled "Apple TV Death after update"  and found several links that have proven to work to restore to the previous version.  Here is my post:
"I had originally replied to a post titled "No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1 update". That has been my issue after updating to 5.1. Wirless worked for me but iTunes match and Podcasts were slow to respond. I finally downgraded to the previous version (5.0.2). So far, my ATV3 has been operating exactly as it did out of the box. No more activation failed message, and all components of ATV are functioning flawlessly on my whole home LAN network.
I also wonder what Apple was thinking for releasing this update without adaquate testing. I can forgive them for Maps, but not this. ATV has been around long enough for all of the kinks to be worked out and any updates to just plain work. I did like the new menu displays in apps and how you could rearrange the program icons on the home screen.
Perhaps they will get it right. Some day. But until they show proof that any future updates are correct and provide detailed instructions on how to revert back to a previous version, I will be very leary of updating. Spending a week reading message boards on how to do a simple resotre is not my idea of how to spend my weekends.
As a side note, I am a PC, so to restore from an .ispw file located on your system, you must press the Alt & Shift keys togather, then click the Restore button, and a window will pop-up so you can select the location for the restore file."
    Directions to restore:
"Yes you can. I am a PC. Download the .ipsw file and save to your desktop. Unplug the LAN, HDMI and power cable. Connect the usb cable from your laptop to the ATV. If iTunes does not automatically launch, start it. After iTunes is running, plug in the power cable to the ATV. iTunes will recognize the ATV and will open the restore window in iTunes.
Press the Alt and Shift keys togather, then click on the Restore button. A file window will open so you can navigate to the desktop (or where ever you saved the file). Select the AppleTV3,1_5.-.2_9B830_Restore.ipsw file. iTunes will start the restore process.
When you see the message that it has completed the restore, unplug the usb cable and power cable. Reconnect the LAN and HDMI cable then plug in the Power cable in that sequence.
Follow the setup procedure again and all should be as it was before."

  • I Have 15 inch G4 that can not acquire wireless net work, I can see other wireless but failes to connect

The air port is on and it is asking to join the network that is available, I type in the passcode and every time it comes back connection failed.
I havr trird the same set  up on manyn other of my apple devices, ( Ipad, Iphone 4 & 4S, Mac book pro 15" & 13" they all work fine with the same passcode)
I cant figure out why this power book is failing to connect to the wifi and or ethernet connection. I also tried to connect to a hard wire conection LAN and it still stated that it was not connected to the ethertnet.
    please help

Since it doesn't connect via wifi or ethernet, something is not setup correctly. Don't know if Safari in OS 10.5 works the same as Safari in OS 10.4, but open Safari. When Safari doesn't connect to the internet, you should get a message that will walk you thru the setup. Do this first when connected via ethernet.

  • Face Time keeps failing after connecting

Face Time was working fine but now failing after connecting.
Calling IPad 2 with mac Book Pro and I Phone 4s.

The description of your problem indicates that your Lan/wi fi network MAY be the culprit because a video chat system requires lots of bandwidth, since large amounts of data need to be transfered back and forth on your system.  You may be suffering from wifi interference from neighboring networks, in which case you need to change your wifi channel to another clear channel.  Also, your network may have slowed down for a number of other reasons.  To operate Facetime effectively using Wifi, you need a recent generation of wireless router for best results, such as an 802.11n capable unit.

I am visiting my parents who have a LAN connnection and a PC running Windows XP. I brought my Airport extreme, (coned version) with me so that I would be able to use my laptop while here. When ever I connect the Airport (LAN box? into Airport, Airport into PC) both computers show a connection to the interent but fail to connect to the internet. I have also tried plugging the ethernet cable directly into my laptop and I have no luck there as well.
I have tried to look through help on the pc and there is no help to be found.
If anyone out there should know how I can fix this problem it sure would be great.
    thanks

Is this a DSL connection or cable modem connection?
If it is a cable modem connection you must power off the cable modem whenever you switch the Ethernet output from one device to another. This causes the cable modem to forget the device that it was talking to. The cable modem will then discover the new device and communicate with it.

  • I have an epson xp600 and a mac book pro. Wireless printing is OK if I'm lucky for one time only then a 'failed to connect' message so I have to delete and re add the printer to get it working again (but just once!) then the same occurs. Why?

I have an epson xp600 and a mac book pro. Wireless printing is OK if I'm lucky for one time only then a 'failed to connect' message so I have to delete and re add the printer to get it working again (but just once!) then the same occurs. Why?

I am not certain this will fix your problem but I suggest you assign the printer a static IP address.
Using the printer's front panel, select Menu > Network > WLAN > TCP/IP > Boot method, and change it to "static". Provide a static IP address that is on your LAN's subnet.
For example, if you are using an AirPort Extreme, you might give it an IP address of 10.0.1.100. If you are using a Netgear or Linksys router that defaults to issuing 192.168.x.x addresses, you might give it an address of 192.168.1.100. That way, the printer will always "reside at the same address" on your network. If your router has the ability, you should reserve that address so that the router does not attempt to assign it to another DHCP device.
Then, go to System Preferences > Print & Scan, and delete your existing printer with the "–" (minus) button. Add it again, using the "+" (plus) button. In the window that appears, select the IP pane, and from the Protocol menu select "Line Printer Daemon (LPD)". In the Address field type the IP address you gave your printer.
If all goes well the "Pring Using" field will detect the printer at that address and automatically select the appropriate driver. You will see something similar to the following screenshot ("name" can be whatever you decide, and "location" is optional):
Click Add, then you can close System Preferences.
There are other possible reasons your printer is "not responding" which could include wireless interference from competing wireless networks, but try this "static IP" method first. It should mitigate the problem.
