Failing optical drive?

Right, the latest and final piece of hardware (only thing thats original left) on my heap of junk macbook pro to start playing up is the optical drive.....i keep having issues where its spitting out certain discs, yet they read fine when you put them in a computer with a normal tray drive?
One piece of software i have it wont read the disc at all.
I bought the snow leopard upgrade today and it took me 4 attempts to insert the disc before it finally decided it wanted to load it, and that was a brand new disc.
Most dvds and discs its fine with, just a few, and seemingly all the important ones.
I had to replace the HDD last week as that had failed, and someone suggested that maybe the computer is very picky about what HDD it will be fully compatible with?! I think that rubbish personally though as the disc loads as it should when i connet an external DVD drive to the computer??
Is it time for a new optical drive? And if so where can i buy one?
Andy

Hey I had a 2008 MacBook Pro start doing this a little while ago. I went to staples to look for a cleaning disc and the person who helped me mentioned that the cleaning discs tend to get stuck in the slot driven drives... So I ended up googling other ways to clean it and I found that putting one of those microfiber cleaning cloths around an old credit card and sticking it in the drive, slidding it back and forth in order to try to clean the laser in there helps. Now it didn't fix the problem completely, it will now read most CD's and some DVD's which was a massive improvement from before. Other than that you could buy a new drive from Expercom or an Apple store but it will cost you a good amount of money...

  • Install Ubuntu on a G3 iBook with a failed optical drive via MacBook Pro

I have a G3 iBook that has a failed drive. I want to install Ubuntu on it, but the CD-drive won't read discs anymore.
I do have a MacBook Pro. Is there anyway I can put the Live CD into my MacBook Pro and have the iBook boot from my MacBook Pro's optical drive?

The way I read the Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303118
That would only work if the iBook, too, is running OS X 10.4. (It may be; but it may not. I take it that it's the MacBook in OS X 10.4.7, Wayland?)
I'm not sure you would have to boot from the Ubuntu disc in order to install from it (never having used Linux). If you do have to boot from the Linux disc, I'm not sure FireWire Target Disk Mode will work at all for this purpose, since FireWire Target Disk Mode is a feature of OS X.
You may want to ask about this in the Unix Forum, Wayland.

  • Optical Drive Has Failed - Can I disable it, what's next?

My 2 year old Mac Mini's optical drive has failed.
I had finished importing a CD and went to eject it and all I heard was grinding and the CD would not come out. I tired everything under the sun to get the disk to eject with nothing working, so I took it to my local Apple Care Center.
Their diagnosis is the optical drive has failed. So now what?
    1. They removed the CD, but my Optical Drive is still grinding and it is driving me crazy (the grinding is not continuous, but happens every 8 seconds to 10 seconds)! What can I do, can I somehow disable the Optical Drive so it won't continue grinding? I have reboot several times and nothing seems to satisfy/stop this grinding Optical Drive!
    2. I guess I am going to have to buy an external Optical Drive (oh joy, more cash), can anyone tell me about life w/o an internal Optical Drive and using an external optical drive? Any suggestions on which model/features I should look for? ...besides one that uses FireWire, which is a must for me.
    3. I have an external hard drive which I use to backup my Mac Mini. Now that I don't have an internal Optical Drive, are there any other safety issues I should be thinking about? How about booting the Mac Mini from a disk when it crashes without an internal Optical Drive?
I am totally frustrated at this point!
    Cheers, Paul

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
With no disk in the optical drive, it should be almost entirely inactive (it would be expected to make some noise initially at bootup, but should not be active after that). It makes me wonder if the disk was removed correctly, or whether the drive is still 'latched' and thus 'thinks' a disk is in place. In this situation, I'd return the unit to the Apple Store and ask them to resolve the problem, since a failed drive should not create these symptoms.
For external drives, there are a number of good solutions - see http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for some examples, starting at around $72. There should be no issue with using an external, and indeed, you are likely to find that even the cheapest of those listed provide you with rather faster performance with rather less fussiness about media brands. You are right to want a FW drive, for best performance.
As long as the external optical is connected and powered, and a valid MacOS install disk inserted, there should be no problems booting to it if required - though you may have to hold the Option key down (Alt if you are using a PC keyboard) to get to the boot loader screen, rather than C to boot directly to the optical drive.

  • Optical Drive Burn Fails Error 4200

I have a new optical DVD writer (also burns cds, etc.) and if I use Nero software to burn .mp3 files or .acc files no problem. But when I try to burn a cd from within iTunes (mp4) it says burn failed - unknown error 4200.
I have removed and reinstalled iTunes, have updated the firmware on the new drive, have tried burning at a slower rate. I have spoken with both iTunes and the manufacturer with no resolution. It is a Samsung SATA optical drive.
    Anyone got ideas?

    Thank you for your help!
At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.
My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.
I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.
without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

  • Optical drive fails to read most DVD's

Product: HP Pavilion dv4t-1500, Windows 7 64-bit OEM.
A few weeks ago my DVD drive stopped reading DVD's. I put a DVD in and close the door and it spins up, then down, spins up, then down. And, most of the time it never loads the video content. Frequently, it instead presents a dialog asking if I want to burn a CD/DVD.
I first thought I had a defective CD/DVD drive. So, I purchased one off eBay for $23 (being careful to get exactly the same drive). The same behavior persisted. So, I put the original drive back in.
I found an article online that said something about upper filters, and I followed those instructions. Still no change.
I then did a manual removal of the optical drive drivers using Device Manager. After the restart and loading of Windows I tried again, and there was still no change.
Then, I did a system restore from the restore backup on the hard drive. Still no change.
I am at a loss of what to do now. I cannot do a clean install from an OEM setup. I would have to buy a Windows 7 upgrade for $119 to do a clean install. But, before that I would have to do a clean install of XP Pro, but I can't do that because I don't have the SATA drivers that are needed.
Any ideas on how to get this Windows 7 system and its optical driver working together again? Thanks!

    Hi:
The first one is your Intel Wireless WiFi Link 1000:
I'm giving you the link to the latest Intel driver for it. The first driver listed is what you want.

  • Optical drive failed, what are my options?

My optical drive no longer works. I put in a cd/dvd, it accepts it, it makes a noise, and then it spits it back out. I talked to technician and he said it sounds like a hardware problem and that the drive probably needs replaced. Before I take this big step I just wanted some other opinions about what may be wrong and perhaps some tricks to fix it (assuming the problem was minor). Thanks in advance to any help.

New information: I took my MacBook apart and took the optical drive apart to find that a screw had come loose and was attracted to the optical lens thing. I put the screw back in its place (seemingly), and put the computer back together. It now reads data disks but not music cds. Anybody ever heard of this?

  • Various optical drives failing on PB

    Hello -
I recently accquired a nonbooting Powerbook from a friend. After a bit of coaxing, I was able to re-install software (from an external drive)and get it running.
It is performing fine, with the exception of the optical drive, which although recognized on the System Profiler, would not read discs. It tries to read for a few minutes, then spits out the disc.
I have since tried 2 other (working) optical drives in the machine and they will not work either. The CD never mounts to desktop, although System Profile correctly reads the type of new drive in the unit.
Seems a software issue? Firmware? Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. The profiler recognizes it on the bus, under ATA . . . it does recognize (states brand name and specs) each model drive I have plugged in . . . the one I am interested in using is PANASONIC UJ-825-C. Although it gets recognized,(by the profiler) no disc ever appears on the desktop.
I'll try to get more specifics on exactly what is listed on the profiler for the new drive tonight. Thanks for much for your help.
PS I repaired permissions and also reset (disconnected and re-connected) the internal battery, too.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • HT4818 Why can't you create a Windows USB on a computer with an optical drive because my optical drive has failed

I get my USB and my Windows 7.iso but when I open bootcamp the option to create a Windows USB is not clickable. Please help because my Optical Drive doesn't work.

    Hi Rosera,
This is bad and I am sorry to hear that you are running into these issues.
Let me connect with you, so right now, the current state is that you have installed copy of PSE 8 in trial on your windows 7 machine, and when you are trying to enter the serial number from your PSE 8 Box, it is saying the serial number to be invalid?
It might sound pretty obvious, but please make sure that you are entering the serial number correctly and of PSE 8(in case you bought a PEPE box)?
Have you tried the steps mentioned below by Barbara?
If possible, you can send me the serial number through PRIVATE MESSAGE and I can check it on my end that whether the serial number is indeed invalid or that the issue is with your machine?
    Regards,
    Ankush

  • Optical drive fails when HDD is connected

    Hello!
I have a Mac Mini G4, which I replaced the hard-drive with a IDE-CF-adapter, and with this connected the optical drive is unusable. At boot it spins as normal, but I can't boot from it, nor get the disc out (with mouse-button). If I remove the CF-card (adapter still connected), I can boot from CD or get the CD out.
    What could be wrong?
The CF is empty, but I can access it via FW-target mode, and it can boot the CF-card , but not the cd/dvd.
    Plz hlp!

as far as i know its not possible to remove the hardware password from the HDD other than by using your laptop.
Still if you google arround I think I saw once something about a Linux distro that was able to unlock some HD's. Not sure if thats still arround but perhaps you can give it a go. Still I would not advise doing something like that has its possible that it messes up your HD and then you will be stuck with a good paperweight.
The proper course of action when you send ur laptop to warranty is to make a full backup. There are image software out there that allows you to make a mirror image of your HD for example. I, myself, bought a 100GB USB2 2.5' HD that fits my pocket and goes with me everywhere. I've encrypted it with TrueCrypt so no one has access to my sensible information if loose it and I make regular backups from the laptop to this HD. It saved my life at least 2x.
    Just my 2 cents
    Cheers

  • How to install windows 8 using bootcamp with no optical drive

    Hi,
I have a mac book pro 17" late 2011 with Mountain Lion installed.
I have previously installed a windows 7 using bootcamp without an optical drive by creating an install disk as part of boot camp option.
I still don't have an optical drive.
The other day I removed my Windows 7 since I want to try Windows 8 but when I try using boot camp to install windows 8 it is asking for an optical drive and the option to create an install disk is not available anymore.
    Any idea on this issue?
    Thanks much

It should be straight forward and no different, except you are burning an ISO and that always needs to be done at slowest burn speed for any version of Windows.Otherwise it won't work (even if it manages to install it will fail on restart or some other point).

  • MacBook Pro Repeatedly Loads Purple & Teal Stripe, Gray, Light Blue, Bright Blue and Bright Blue Stripe Screens Instead of OS after Optical Drive Replacement by Apple (PICTURES INCLUDED)

17 inch March 26-29 (order date – shipping date) 2011 MacBook Pro, 256GB Solid State Drive, 2.3 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 1 processer, 4 Cores, 256 KB L2 Cache per core, 8 MB L3 Cache, 8 GB Memory (8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB), AMD Radeon HD 6750M Video Card, Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 512 MB total of VRAM. 110 GBs of free/unused disk space remaining.
Full Specs are in subsequent post.
The issues described in the title continue even after I’ve reinstalled the operating system twice (Snow Leopard) and installed Mavericks (which is working fine and even faster). I’ve tried many commands to repair this.
If anyone has experienced any of the symptoms above or below, your advice and response will be much appreciated as well as marked. These are the details:
My Early 2011 MacBook Pro has had the typical blue screens, screen freezes and graphics issues since I bought it about three years ago but nothing like this and NEVER any load issues until about a month ago. That was when my superdrive replacement was put in.
Since then my MacBook Pro will go into hard freezes or kernel panics. Then I’ll have to power it down manually and power it up manually. It’ll then refuse to load the OS until after multiple tries. It started out just 2 or 3, then 4 or 5, then 6-12, then 20. Now it takes over 30 boots to load the OS. These boot issues also occur even if it doesn’t freeze, i.e.: when I shut it down or restart it naturally (via the Apple menu, etc.).
95% of the time it’ll load to a gray screen instead of the OS. 4% of the time it’ll load to a light blue screen. Then there are the others: the first time this happened it loaded to the striped purple and teal screen shown in the picture. This happened the next four times then intermittently for about 5 or so more times.
It also loaded gray flickering screens. Flickering screens also occurred right before it froze and had to be manually powered down and up. Then it began to load regular gray and light blue screens and all flickering screens stopped. And then bright blue screens a couple times intermittently for a few days, sometimes with lines. Sometimes it’ll load to a blank/black screen as well. I’d reset the NVRAM and SMC but it still continued, happening multiple times a day, each time taking more and more hard shut downs and hard power ons to finally load the OS.
Until I installed Mavericks, every time it finally loaded the OS Finder began indexing. After Mavericks this has occurred 95% of the time.
After talking to Apple Support they had me do a NVRAM and SMC reset again over the phone. The MacBook Pro refused to load the entire time we were on the phone. After the call it got worse. It froze over 6 times that day and at worse took over 30 boots to load the OS.
I finally had time to deal with it the next day when it froze again. After over 25 boots it loaded and I put in the Snow Leopard OS dvd and ran Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive and it said it was fine. Repaired the disk anyway and it gave this message at the end:
“Updating boot support partitions for volume required”.
Next I tried to start in safe mode and it just hung up for hours. Then started up in single mode and it loaded the OS. It then loaded normally for three times in a row. I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything loaded normally. I waited an hour or so and then I downloaded Mavericks. 5 or so hours later Mavericks was installed. Everything hardware wise was fine for a day and all software issues were easily fixable incompatibilities. My Mac was even faster with Mavericks. However, Photoshop did give a perhaps relevant message:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer’s website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences.”
(I have OpenGL enabled in Photoshop and it was already checked when this error occurred).
Two days ago I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions while logged in to a non-admin account. Verified and repaired the disk, then verified permissions. Everything fine. After repairing permissions however, it gave a weird error box:
"Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
The box stayed “stuck” in the Disk Utility window. My MacBook Pro then failed to do anything. I manually powered it down and up. It loaded to a gray screen with the error message box again: "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
It then refused to load anything else but this message box on a gray screen even after rebooting it multiple times in safe, verbose and single modes and after resetting the NVRAM and SMC. I went online with an iPad and entered in the error and got some advice. I tried to run fsck and erase the /var/folders/ via single user mode but it still loaded to a gray screen with the error message. I just decided to skip to the end and Cmd-R loaded into recovery mode and reinstalled Mavericks again. That worked: the message has not appeared since.
Some people have said this error is related to a hard drive cable failure. I know that this cable was tampered with during the optical drive replacement procedures because I watched them do it.
Everything was fine for a day. Then yesterday my MacBook Pro froze while trying to open a VLC file. It took 12 boots to load the OS.  I tried single mode once and verbose mode once. 10 times it loaded to gray screens, even in those mode. A Safe boot lead to a bright blue screen. Finally reset the SMC and it loaded on the 12th time.
Just five hours ago the same thing happened except it took over 30 boots to load the OS. Single, verbose and normal boots, NVRAM and SMC resets lead to gray screens.  Safe boots lead to bright blue screens with and without lines (see pictures). Finally loaded on a normal boot.
I know I should have tried safe booting, verbose, single and recovery modes, disk utility, fsck and other command methods earlier this month but in the end, these methods have not solved the problem anymore than resetting the NVRAM or SMC.
There seems to be conclusive evidence that it’s a hardware problem, stemming from last month, the FIRST AND ONLY time my MacBook Pro was opened up. Maybe it’s the hard drive cable, but it could also be the graphics card and/or logic board (something that’s always been defective on this MacBook Pro, in my opinion). Many early 2011 MacBook Pro owners have given evidence to the latter possibility online.
The first time it started it seemed to stem from me using iPhoto and Photoshop a lot. I had both running continuously for about two weeks. This is another reason for suspecting the graphics card/logic board is at fault (in addition to three years of screen/graphics glitches). And since the card is soldered to the board and the board connected to the cable...I also have serious battery draining issues, something else that got bad after the Apple Superdrive repair. And the battery is connected to the board...
Also, since downloading Mavericks, windows from every app get blurry/fuzzy when I scroll or zoom in. I have read that this is happening to a lot of folks though for various reasons.
I guess it could always be the hard drive. I just don’t know. I’m taking it in to Apple, but can't right away because it’s not local.  I know they’ll be able to run a test on the hard drive. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem (especially the purple and teal striped screen) before they start poking around, possibly creating another problem that goes beyond my Apple Care Plan allotment.

  • Optical drive no longer working after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I have read several of the posts about problems with the optical drive, but I think my problem is different.
    I have a MacBook Pro, early 2008 (non-unibody)
Under Leopard, I had no problems with the optical drive. I purchased Snow Leopard (the single disc, 10.6.3 version). The upgrade went smoothly. From that moment on, the optical drive fails to read both CD's and DVD's.
I have reset SMC and PRAM/NVRAM, but that made no difference.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade.

Since I upgrade to Lion OS my optical drive stop working can't read or write at all I did what I could to fix it but still not working , any help please

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Optical drive no longer working

    Hi to everyone,
my optical drive seems to have some problems at writing to CDs, now.
Every time I try to burn, I will get an error message:
    _- in Finder:_
Finder: Burn started, Tue Nov 25 15:09:22 2008
Finder: Burning to CD-R media with SAO strategy in MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221 GA0J via ATAPI.
Finder: Requested burn speed was max, actual burn speed is 24x.
Finder: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
Finder: Burn failed, Tue Nov 25 15:10:35 2008
Finder: Burn sense: 5/2C/00 Illegal Request, Command sequence error
Finder: Burn error: 0x80020022 Le périphérique ne répond pas. (The drive does not answer).
    _- in Toast:_
    Medium Error
    0x73,0x03
The Combo drive will still read DVDs and CDs.
I used 4 different kinds of blank CDs, always the same error.
    _Here's System profiler:_

May someone tell me what the problem is? How can I resolve this?
    Thanks in advance to everyone,
    Enrico

Repair needed for my MacBook - ComboDrive has been replaced by an internal SuperDrive. Everything is working, now.
ComboDrive was going to die. Problems caused by too much heat. Also re-installed FanControl for heating problems.
