Failing over from MDC02 back to MDC01

Looking for some advice on an XSan MetaData controller problem.  Last week, we had a failover from our primary MetaData controler (metasvr01) to our backup MetaData Controller (metasvr02).  So far, so good.
After some investigation, it looked like metasvr01 had locked up - so we rebooted it.  It appears to have come back alive somewhat normally, except the cvadmin command is not seeing both MetaData servers (like it used to).
Should it be "safe" to try a metadata server failover to metasvr01?
Are there any potential problems / "gotcha's" we should be aware of?
Here's the output from metasvr01:

metasvr01:~ metasvr01$ sudo cvadmin

Prior to this incident, we would see both metadata servers (on both metasvr01 and metasvr02) - with the "active" one having the asterisk indicating correctly.
Original XSan / XRaid systems.
Still running XSan version 1.4.x
Here are the details regarding metasvr01:
OS/X Server 10.5.5
Normally serving as the primary / active metadata controller.
Here are the details regarding metasvr02:
OS/X Server 10.5.5
Normally serving as the secondary / backup metadata controller,

                         primary / master DNS server,
                         smb / afp shares throughout the LAN.

One final set of notes regarding these servers.  Over the last couple of months, the servers have been increasingly "problematic".  So far, we've lost the following capabilities on them:
- no more ARD access (generally)
- no more local KB, Mouse, & Monitor access (generally)
- no more XSan GUI / Server tools GUI access
================================================================================ ==

It is common that when only one of the Xsan servers are restarted that their configuration would get out of sync.
It looks like your metasvr01 thinks it is still hosting the volumes that were failed over.
What you can try to do is from metasvr02 demote metasvr01 to a client and then promote it back to controller. That will force a configuration rewrite and bring metasvr01 back in sync. If cvadmin shows you a correct configuration, then you could safely fail over back to metasvr01 assuming you are confident that whatever issue led to the failover is solved.
A full restart of the XSAN would probably work too (shutdown order - clients, controllers, raids, switches and power on on reverse order)
I would also recomend regular maintenance tasks, like checking disk and permissions on the servers and stopping the volume(s) and running cvfsck.

  • How do the application servers connect the new database after failing over from primary DB to standby DB

    How do the application servers connect the new database after failing over from primary DB to standby DB?
    We have setup a DR environment with a standalone Primary server and a standalone Physical Standby server on RHEL Linux 6.4. Now our application team would like to know:
    When the primary DB server is crashed, the standy DB server will takeover the role of primary DB through the DataGuard fast failover. As the applications are connected by the primary DB IP before,currently the physical DB is used as a different IP or listener. If this is happened, they need to stop their application servers and re-configure their connection so the they coonect the new DB server, they cannot tolerate these workaround.
    Whether does oracle have the better solution for this so that the application can automatically know the role's transition and change to the new IP without re-confige any connection and shutdown their application?
    Oracle support provides us the answer as following:
    ==================================================================
    Applications connected to a primary database can transparently failover to the new primary database upon an Oracle Data Guard role transition. Integration with Fast Application Notification (FAN) provides fast failover for integrated clients.
    After a failover, the broker publishes Fast Application Notification (FAN) events. These FAN events can be used in the following ways:
    Applications can use FAN without programmatic changes if they use one of these Oracle integrated database clients: Oracle Database JDBC, Oracle Database Oracle Call Interface (OCI), and Oracle Data Provider for .NET ( ODP.NET). These clients can be configured for Fast Connection Failover (FCF) to automatically connect to a new primary database after a failover.
    JAVA applications can use FAN programmatically by using the JDBC FAN application programming interface to subscribe to FAN events and to execute event handling actions upon the receipt of an event.
    FAN server-side callouts can be configured on the database tier.
    FAN events are published using Oracle Notification Services (ONS) and Oracle Streams Advanced Queuing (AQ).
    =======================================================================================
    Who has the experience and the related documentation or other solutions? we don't have the concept of about FAN.
    Thank very much in advance.

    Hi mesbeg,
    Thanks alot.
    For example, there is an application JBOSS server connecting the DB, we just added another datasource and put the standby IP into the configuration file except adding a service on DB side like this following:
            <subsystem xmlns="urn:jboss:domain:datasources:1.0">
            <datasources>
                    <datasource jta="false" jndi-name="java:/jdbc/idserverDatasource" pool-name="IDServerDataSource" enabled="true" use-java-context="true">
                        <connection-url>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<primay DB IP>:1521:testdb</connection-url>
                        <connection-url>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<standby DB IP>:1521:testdb</connection-url>
                        <driver>oracle</driver>
                        <pool>
                            <min-pool-size>2</min-pool-size>
                            <max-pool-size>10</max-pool-size>
                            <prefill>true</prefill>
                        </pool>
                        <security>
                            <user-name>TEST_USER</user-name>
                            <password>Password1</password>
                        </security>
                        <validation>
                            <valid-connection-checker class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleValidConnectionChecker"/>
                            <validate-on-match>false</validate-on-match>
                            <background-validation>false</background-validation>

                            <stale-connection-checker class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleStaleConnectionChecker"/>
                            <exception-sorter class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleExceptionSorter"/>
                        </validation>
                    </datasource>
                    <drivers>
                        <driver name="oracle" module="com.oracle.jdbc">
                            <xa-datasource-class>oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver</xa-datasource-class>
                        </driver>
                    </drivers>
                </datasources>
            </subsystem>
    If the failover is occurred, the JBOSS will automatically be pointed to the standby DB. Additional actions are not needed.

  • ISE admin , PSN and monitoring node fail-over and fall back scenario

    Hi Experts,
    I have question about ISE failover .
    I have two ISE appliaces in two different location . I am trying to understand the fail-over scenario and fall-back scenario
    I have gone through document as well however still not clear.
    my Primary ISE server would have primary admin role , primary monitoring node and secondary ISE would have secondary admin and secondary monitoring role .
    In case of primary ISE appliance failure , I will have to login into secondary ISE node and make admin role as primary but how about if primary ISE comes back ? what would be scenario ?
    during the primary failure will there any impact with users for authentication ? as far as PSN is available from secondary , it should work ...right ?
    and what is the actual method to promote the secondary ISE admin node to primary ? do i have to even manually make monitoring node role changes ?
    will i have to reboot the secondary ISE after promoting admin role to primary  ?

    We have the same set up across an OTV link and have tested this scenario out multiple times. You don't have to do anything if communication is broken between the prim and secondary nodes. The secondary will automatically start authenticating devices that it is in contact with. If you promote the secondary to primary after the link is broke it will assume the primary role when the link is restored and force the former primary nodes to secondary.

  • Is there a way to config WLS to fail over from a primary RAC cluster to a DR RAC cluster?

    Here's the situation:
    We have two Oracle RAC clusters, one in a primary site, and the other in a DR site
    Although they run active/active using some sort of replication (Oracle Streams? not sure), we are being asked to use only the one currently being used as the primary to prevent latency & conflict issues
    We are using this only for read-only queries.
    We are not concerned with XA
    We're using WebLogic 10.3.5 with MultiDatasources, using the Oracle Thin driver (non-XA for this use case) for instances
    I know how to set up MultiDatasources for an individual RAC cluster, and I have been doing that for years.
    Question:
    Is there a way to configure MultiDatasources (mDS) in WebLogic to allow for automatic failover between the two clusters, or does the app have to be coded to failover from an mDS that's not working to one that's working (with preference to a currently labelled "primary" site).
    Note:
    We still want to have load balancing across the current "primary" cluster's members
    Is there a "best practice" here?

    Hi Steve,
    There are 2 ways to connect WLS to a Oracle RAC.
    1. Use the Oracle RAC service URL which contains the details of all the RAC nodes and the respective IP address and DNS.
    2. Connect to the primary cluster as you are currently doing and use a MDS to load-balance/failover between multiple nodes in the primary RAC (if applicable).
        In case of a primary RAC nodes failure and switch to DR RAC nodes, use WLST scripts to change the connection URL and restart the application to remove any old connections.
        Such DB fail-over tests can be conducted in a test/reference environment to set up the required log monitoring and subsequent steps to measure the timelines.
    Thanks,
    Souvik.

  • /WS fail-over

    Hello everyone,
    I'm having some difficulties working with /WS fail-over, or rather with /WS fail-back.
    In my Tuxedo 8.0RP133 /WS client I define a WSNADDR containing two destinations,
    something like
    WSNADDR=//host:port1,//host:port2
    My destination is a TUXEDO 6.5 application with two WSL servers.
    In my client I trap tpcall() errors and for some errors (TPESYSTEM, for example)
    I assume that an idle timeout or some temporary error has occurred, call tpterm(),
    tpinit() and retry tpcall() again.
    This sort of works, most of the time... But it seems that the fail-over (from
    host:port1 to host:port2) is one-way only. If I shut down the first WSL the client
    fails-over to the second one quite nicely. If I then restart the first WSL and
    shut down the second one, the client fails. As far as I can understand, once the
    client process has started using the second address in WSNADDR there is no turning
    back to the first one again.
    Is this the way it is supposed to be? Have I misinterpreted the syntax for WSNADDR?
    Or is this simply a case for BEA support?
    Best regards,
    /Per

    Thanks for your input, Amit.
    I was probably only using the second WSL all the time. Seems like an encryption
    settings problem prevented the first one from ever being useful for me...

    The WSL Connection to the Tuxedo Server is decided at the time of tpinit.
    So if
    you have specified 2 address for tpinit, the workstation tries to connect
    to the
    first ip address specified and if it is not successful, it tries to connect
    to
    the second ip address...
    this process is done every time you do a tpinit.
    So i guess, if you do a tpinit after bringing back the 1st IP Address
    WSL, you
    should be able connect ..
    I hope this helps.

  • SQL 2005 cluster rejects SQL logins when in failed over state

    When SQL 2005 SP4 on Windows 2003 server cluster is failed over from Server_A to Server_B, it rejects all SQL Server logins. domain logins are OK. The message is "user is not associated with a trusted server connection", then the IP of the
    client. This is error 18452. Anyone know how to fix this? They should work fine from both servers. We think this started just after installing SP4.
    DaveK

    Hello,
    The connection string is good, you're definitely using sql auth.
    LoginMode on Server_B is REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1) LoginMode on Server_A is REG_DWORD 0x00000002 (2) Looks like you are on to something. I will schedule another test failover. I assume a 2 is mixed mode? If so, why would SQL allow two different modes
    on each side of a cluster?
    You definitely have a registry replication issue, or at the very least a registry that isn't in sync with the cluster. This could happen for various reasons, none of which we'll probably find out about now, but never the less...
    A good test would be to set it to windows only on Node A, wait a minute and then set it to Windows Auth and see if that replicates the registry setting across nodes correctly - this is actually the windows level and doesn't have anything to do with SQL Server.
    SQL Server reads this value from the registry and it is not stored inside any databases (read, nothing stored in the master database) as such it's a per machine setting. Since it's not set correctly on Node B, when SQL server starts up it correctly reads
    that registry key and acts on it as it should. The culprit isn't SQL Server, it's Windows Clustering.
    Hopefully this makes a little more sense now. You can actually just edit the registry setting to match Node A and fail over to B, everything should work correctly. It doesn't help you with a root cause analysis which definitely needs to be done as who knows
    what else may not be correctly in sync.

  • Webauth Failed Over

    I'm attempting to use webauth as a fallback method for 802.1x for wired clients. I've configured the switchport as recommened in the documentation. Here's the snipped for the interface:

    The debugs seem to show that webauth fails over too quickly for it to be effective. Any ideas why this may be the case? Thanks.

    if my memory serves me well, you configure "dot1x timeout tx-period 5". So it means that the switch will send dot1x probes every 5 seconds, 3 times.
    So after 15 seconds,it declares there is no dot1x capable laptop and it fails over.
    I would suggest to increase the amount of dot1x retries or to increase the tx period.

  • UCCX Purposely Prevent Fail-over

    Hi.  I was wondering if shutting down the engine on a secondary server would be enough to prevent fail-over in an HA environment.
    Basically; we have had a call with TACs on the servers for no apparent reason, failing over and then back.  What we found was happening was that the 2 servers were losing heartbeat to each other, so the secondary server was trying to take control.  This then cause all of our agents to fail over, but calls could get lost as the primary server actually was fully functioning.  This lead us to another TAC case on an error on a router near the secondary server that was causing the loss of heartbeat.  Problem is, that router cannot come down for some time and is due to just be replaced at the end of the year.
    So now, maybe not entirely to my liking; we/someone wants to try just having the primary running and then if worse comes to worse, we can start the secondary back up again and I am curious what the best procedure to do that would be.  Hopes would be that this somehow would at least stop the random fail-overs, even if it doesn't actually address the real issue.

    I have to rely on another guy for the router, switches and UCM side of things and he hasn't said exactly what the error message is, but that he called into TACs and it is supposed to only be cosmetic, and a reboot of the router would clear it.   Unfortunately, where that router is; it will not be brought down until the end of the year on a maintenance window.
    At any rate; the UCCX server has been ruled out as we have had multiple tickets with TACS for the UCCX then to the UCM and they both have been pointing to a network issue that does not get avoided by having the secondary server down, mainly because we do have a CM publisher and subscriber on the same network.

              When I kill the weblogic process servicing my request, I see the next request
              get failed over to the secondary server and all my session information has been
              replicated. In short I see the behavior I expect.
              r.troon
              However, when I either disconnect the primary server from the network or just
              switch this server off, I just get a message back
              to the browser - "unable to connect to servers".
              I don't really understand why the behaviour should be different . I would expect
              both to failover in the same manner. Does the cluster servlet only handle tcp
              reset failures?
              Has anybody else experience this or have any ideas.
              Thanks

    I think I might have found the answer......
    The AD objects for the clusters had been moved from the Computers OU into a newly created OU. I'm suspecting that the cluster node computer objects didn't have perms to the cluster object within that OU and that was causing the issue. I know I've seen cluster
    object issues before when moving to a new OU.
    All has started working again for the moment so I now just need to investigate what permissions I need on the new OU so that I can move the cluster object in.

  • Users contacts missing after failing over and then failing back pool

    We have 2 Lync enterprise pools that are paired.
    3 days ago, I failed the central management store, and all users from pool01 to pool02.
    This morning, I failed the CMS and all users back from pool02 to pool01.
    All users signed back in to Lync and no issues were reported. A user then contacted me to say that his contact list was empty.
    I had him sign out and back in to Lync, and also had him sign into Lync from a different workstation, as well as his mobile device. All of which showed his contacts list as empty.
    We have unified contacts enabled (Hybrid mode with Office 365 exchange online, and Lync on prem). When I check the users Outlook contacts, I can see all of his contacts listed under "Lync Contacts", along with the current presence of each user.
    If I perform an export-csuserdata for that user's userdata, the XML file contained within the ZIP file shows the contacts that he is missing.
    I've also checked the client log on the workstation too, and can see that Lync can see the contacts as it lists them in the log. They do not appear in the Lync client though.
    Environment details:
    Lync 2013 - 2 enterprise pools running the latest December 2014 CU updates.
    Lync 2013 clients - running on Windows 8.1. User who is experiencing the issue is running client version 15.0.4675.1000 (32 bit)
    I have attempted to re-import the user data using both import-csuserdata (and restarting the front end services) and update-csuserdata. Both of these have had no effect.

    Hi Eason,
    Thanks for your reply. I've doubled checked and can confirm that only one policy exists, which enables it globally.
    I believe this problem relates to issues that always seem to happen when ever our primary pool is failed over to the backup pool, and then failed back.
    What I often see is that upon pool failback, things like response group announcements don't play on inbound calls (white noise is heard, followed by the call disconnecting), and agents somehow get signed out of queues (although they appear to be signed in to
    the queue when checking their Response Group settings in their Lync client. I've also noticed that every time we fail back, a different user will come to me and report that either their entire contacts list is missing, or that half of their contacts are missing.
    I am able to restore these from backup though.
    This appears to happen regardless of if the failover to the backup pool is due to a disaster, or to simply perform pool maintenance on our primary pool.

    Why has iTunes seperated a album into indevidual songs, which I have copied over from my external hard drive into iTunes? How can you pull all the songs back together into one album again?

    Steve MacGuire a.k.a. turingtest2 - iTunes & iPod Hints & Tips - Grouping Tracks Into Albums - http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp (older post on Apple Discussions http://discussions.apple.com/message/9910895)
    Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
    If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.  If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.
