This was with 2008r2.....  I guess in Microsoft 2012r2 they want you to use powershell.. Can I make this into powershell script?

Actually after playing around with this for a while, I think taking the first line out and replacing with
Get-ClusterGroup  works nice because it will show you step by step with your pauses where the resources resides... I also added in
Move-ClusterGroup  "available storage"
I am really liking this powershell.....

    Summary: DSC fails to fully install the SQL Server 2012 Failover Cluster, but the identical code snippet below run in powershell ise with administrator credentials works perfectly as does running the SQL server install interface.
    In order to develop DSC configurations, I have set up a Windows Server 2012 R2 failover cluster in VMware Workstation v10 consisting of 3 nodes.  All have the same Windows Server 2012 version and have been fully patched via Microsoft Updates. 
    The cluster properly fails over on command and the cluster validates.  Powershell 4.0 is being used as installed in windows.

    The DSC script builds up the parameters to setup.exe for SQL Server.  Here is the cmd that gets built...

    When I run this specific command in Powershell ISE running as administrator, logged in as domain account that is in the Node1's administrators group and has domain administrative authority, it works perfectly fine and sets up the initial node properly.
    When I use the EXACT SAME code above pasted into my custom DSC resource, as a test with a known successful install, run with the same user as above, it does NOT completely install the cluster properly.  It still installs 17 applications
    related to SQL Server and seems to properly configure everything except the cluster.  The Failover Cluster Manager shows that the SQL Server Role will not come on line and the SQL Server Agent Role is not created. 
    The code is run on Node1 so the setup folder is local to Node1.
    The ConfigurationFile.ini files for the two types of installs are identical.
    Summary.txt does have issues..

    I tried "Option 3 (recommended)" and that did not help.
    The issue I encounter with the fail-over cluster only occurs when trying to install with DSC!
    Using the SQL Server Install wizard, Command Prompt and even in Powershell by invoking the setup.exe all work perfectly.
    So, to reiterate, this issue only occurs while running in the context of DSC.
    I am using the same domain login with Domain Admin Security and locally the account has Administrators group credentials.  The SQL Server Service account also has Administrators Group Credentials.

  • Failover cluster not cleanly shutting down service

    I've got a two node 2008 R2 failover cluster.  I have a single service being managed by it that I configured just as a generic service.  The failover works perfectly when the service is stopped, or when one of the machines goes down, and the immediate
    failback I have configured works perfectly in both scenarios as well.
    However, there's an issue when I take the networking down on the preferred owner of the service.  As far as I can tell (this is the first time I've tried failover clustering, so I'm learning), when I take the networking down, the cluster service shuts
    down, and in turn shuts down the service I've told it to manage.  At this point, when the services aren't running, the service fails over to the secondary as intended.  The problem shows up when I turn the networking back on.  The service tries
    and fails to start on the primary (as many times as I've configured it to try), and then eventually gives up and goes back to the secondary.
    The reason for this, examining logs for the service, is that the required port is already in use.  I checked some more, and sure enough, when I take the networking offline the service gets shut down, but the executable is still running.  This is
    repeatable every time.  When I just stop the service, though, the executables go away.  So it's something to do specifically with how the managed service gets shut down *when it's shut down due to the cluster service stopping*.  For some reason
    it's not cleaning up that associated executable.
    Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix/work around it would be extremely welcome.  Thank you!

    Try to generate cluster log using closter log /g /copy:<path to a local folder>. You might need to bump up log verbosity using cluster /prop ClusterLogLevel=5 (you can check current level using cluster /prop).
    You also can look at the SCM diagnostic channel in the event viewer. Start eventvwr. Wait for the clock icon on the Application and Services Logs to go away. Once the clock icon is gone select this entry and in the menu check Show Analytic and Debug Logs.
    Now expand to the SCM provider located at
    Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Service Control Manager Performance Diagnostic Provider\Diagnostic.

    Enable the log, run repro, disable the log. After that you should see events from the SCM showing you your service state transitions.
    The terminate parameters do not seems to be configurable. I can think of two ways fixing the issue
    - Writing your own cluster resource DLL where you can implement your own policies. THis would be a place to start http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2010/08/24/10053405.aspx.
    - This option is assuming you cannot change the source code of the service to kill orphaned child processes on startup so you have to clenup using some other means. Create another service and make your service dependent on this new service. This new serice
    must be much faster in responding do the SCM commands. On start of this service you using PSAPI enumirate all processes running on the machine and kill the orphaned child processes. You probably should be able to acheve something similar using GenScript resource
    + VB script that does the cleanup.

    You are trying to implement manually what should be happening automatically in the cluster. If the primary SQL Server becomes unavailable in the data center, it should fail over to the secondary SQL Server automatically.  Is that not working?
    You also might want to run this configuration by some SQL experts.  I am not a SQL expert, but if you have both hosts in the data center in a cluster, there is no need for replication between those two nodes as they would be accessing
    the database from some form of shared storage.  Then it looks like you are trying to implement Always On to the DR site.  I'm not sure you can mix both types of failover in a single configuration.
    FYI, it would make more sense to establish a file share witness in your DR site instead of placing a third node in the data center for Node Majority quorum.

  • How to recover from accidental VM role removal in Hyper-V Failover Cluster Manager?

    Hello
    My VMs are still available in Hyper-V Manager but they are no longer available in Cluster Manager. I am curious if there's a way to move them back into the Failover Cluster Manager while retaining their GUIDs?
    I know I can manually create a new VM and add the existing VHD but that process recreates a new GUID causing the VM to regard the stuff I wanted as old.
    I have tried to follow

    Thanks for the reply but that does not help.
    I am not looking to move my VMs to a remote Host but rather looking to repopulate the fail-over cluster manager with the existing VMs in Hyper-V Manager. In a sense, I am looking to reuse the existing GUID without creating new ones.
    Again, my VMs are alive in Hyper-V Manager but are currently not available in Failover Cluster Manager.
    Any scripting assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  • Powershell: Set Access Based Enumeration on share in Failover Cluster

    I'm facing the following problem. Below you see my script to create a shared folder. (My folder share is visible in failover cluster manager, underneath clustergroup TESTSTO01.) 
    Now I need to enable Access Based Enumeration on this share. Has anyone a clue how to do that in powershell? (Version 2). 
    I also need to make sure that the files and programs are not available offline.

  • FTP in Windows 2012 Failover Cluster

    Hi,
    Understand that Windows 2012 is having much improved Failover Clustering features,however i have faced issues when i configured FTP in Windows 2012 Failover Cluster.
    1) As per the process configured the shared disk for FTP data path.
    2)Installaed FTP feature in both Nodes of Clustert
    3)Finally created the Generic Service in Cluster Roles for FTP Service.
    After the configuration i found everything working fine but when i try to failover the FTP role found that FTP resource is not moving smoothly. Also i observed that Microsoft FTP service gets in to "starting" mode in the destination Node. To run the FTP
    resource Microsft FTP service should be in Started mode.
    This happens only when we try to failover else it works fine if you start freshly.
    Have any one tried this? Any clue about such issue ?

    In earlier versions of Internet Information Services, Microsoft provided generic resource monitor components to support high availability Web server instances by using the Microsoft Clustering infrastructure. However, custom code was needed to fully realize
    the potential of this solution. Also, the generic scripts that Microsoft provided did not satisfy customer needs.
    From IIS 7 to configure IIS in a clustered environment by using Windows Server failover clustering, you have to use a custom (scripting) code to enable such a high availability scenario.
    Note:
    We recommend that administrators carefully evaluate the use of Network Load Balancing (NLB) instead of using failover clustering as the primary and preferred method for improving the scalability and availability of Web applications that have multiple servers
    that are running new IIS (from IIS 7) . One benefit of NLB is that all servers can actively participate in the concurrent handling of incoming HTTP requests. Another benefit is that in an NLB IIS environment, it can be much easier to support rolling updates
    and rollbacks while still providing high availability of Web applications.
    To configure high availability for IIS FTP servers using Failover Clustering:
    Install the Web Server role on all cluster nodes.
    Install the Failover Clustering feature on all cluster nodes and create the cluster.
    Set up a file share that will be used for IIS shared configuration
    Configure the IIS shared configuration on all cluster nodes
    Configure Offline Files for IIS Shared Configuration on all cluster nodes
    Configure the FTP site and specify the location of its content on one cluster node
    Configure high availability for your FTP site by creating a generic script in Failover Cluster Manager

  • SQL 2012 installation for Failover Cluster failed

    While installation of SQL 2012 on FOC validation fails on "Database Engine configuration" page with following error:
    The volume that contains SQL Server data directory g:\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA does not belong to the cluster group.
    Want to know how does SQL installation wizard queries volumes configured with Failover Cluster. does it:
    - Enumerate "Physical Disk" resources in FOC
    - does it enumerate all Storage Class resources in FOC for getting the volume list
    - or it depends on WMI (Win32_Volume) to get volumes ?
    The wizard correctly discovers volume g:\ in its FOC group on "Cluster Resource Group" and "Cluster Disk Selection" page. but gives the error on Database configuration page.
    Any help in this would be appreciated.

    I configured IIS under Microsoft Failover Cluster with the help of below link. The setup is working successful. I configured this on Windows2008.

    1.) I kill PID of W3SVC , the failover executed.
    2.) I stopped the Default Web Site, the failover executed.
    3.) I stopped the Default Application Pool, the failover executed.

    But, when I create the same environment under Windows2012, see what happen below.
    I verified below as test cases.
    1.) I kill PID of W3SVC , the failover executed.
    2.) I stopped the Default Web Site, the failover executed.
    3.) I stopped the Default Application Pool, the failover executed.
    4.) I stopped the other Application Pools, the failover is not executed(after changing the script under above mentioned link).

    As the KB mentioned, Microsoft recommends administrators carefully evaluate the use of Network Load Balancing (NLB) as the primary and preferred method for improving the scalability and availability of Web applications with multiple servers running IIS 7.5
    or IIS 7.0, as opposed to using failover clustering.
    It is important to consider that clustering IIS by means of clustering the IIS services does not always guarantee a high availability solution for Web applications.
    While the IIS services (specifically the WWW service) might be up and running, a specific application pool’s hosting process could have terminated, or the application might be throwing internal server HTTP errors. Clustering the Web applications and
    monitoring their health by using a custom script is the correct and recommended way to achieve a high availability IIS cluster using failover clustering. Below is a sample script that monitors the state of an application pool to determine if it is started
    or not.

    I right click on one and press rename, but when i change the name and press enter i get the message "To rename this service or application please rename the Client Access Point via its property page"

  • Using orchestrator to create failover cluster. out of options

    Hi all,
    I am trying to build failover cluster using orchestrator 2012 R2 and then services on the cluster.
    However, I am so stuck now at the first stage:getting the cluster online.
    It is very basic, 2 nodes 2008R2 servers, shared storage for quorum, a virtual name and an IP.
    I try to put as little things as possible at start. I added the failover clustering feature into the orchestrator to avoid the double hop problem. I found that I can create the cluster with a command like this.
    C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
    -NonInteractive -Command {Import-Module 'C:\Windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\1.0\Modules\FailoverClusters\FailoverClusters.psd1';New-Cluster -name clustername -node servername1,servername2 -staticaddress 1.1.1.1}
    I use the powershell.exe to avoid the 32bit powershell problem from orchestartor.
    I can successfully create the cluster using this same command if I run it manually inside my powershell prompt and it usually took 20secs to complete and shows the progress within powershell prompt.
    but when I put in the Run .Net Script and powershell in my orchestrator and run it. It shown success without give any warning/error but unfortunately I found that there are errors in the event log, as below
    Could not retrieve the network topology for the nodes.
    Security must be initialized before any interfaces are marshalled or unmarshalled. It cannot be changed once initialized
    I'd like to say that if I replace "New-Cluster" with "Test-Cluster". It runs normally and perform all tests with a report as output.
    Tried to turn off UAC (admin approval mode for all administrators)
    I’ve also created the disabeld cluster AD computer object with enough permissions before running the command (once again. I can create the cluster manually running the command)
    Also, I’ve set the orchestrator to run the runbook service using my user account. So the credential used for manual execution and orchestrator should be the same (the account is local administrators group member to both node)
    P.S. I found that the error Security must be initialized before any interfaces are marshalled or
    unmarshalled is not specific for Orchestrator + powershell but also for other products.

    finally can run the activity without issue

    There is some confusion on whether or not Microsoft will support a Reporting Services deployment on a failover cluster using scale-out, and adding the Reporting Services service as a generic service in a cluster group to achieve active-passive high

    cannot run the Report Server service as part of a failover cluster."
    This is somewhat confusing to me. Can I expect to receive support from Microsoft for a setup like this?

    Thanks for your posting.
    As Lukasz said in the
    blog, failover clustering with SSRS is possible. However, during the failover there is some time during which users will receive errors when accessing SSRS since the network names will resolve to a computer where the SSRS service is in the process of starting.
    Besides, there are several considerations and manual steps involved on your part before configuring the failover clustering with SSRS service:
    Impact on other applications that share the SQL Server. One common idea is to put SSRS in the same cluster group as SQL Server.  If SQL Server is hosting multiple application databases, other than just the SSRS databases, a failure in SSRS may cause
    a significant failover impact to the entire environment.
    SSRS fails over independently of SQL Server.
    If SSRS is running, it is going to do work on behalf of the overall deployment so it will be Active. To make SSRS Passive is to stop the SSRS service on all passive cluster nodes.
    So, SSRS is designed to achieve High Availability through the Scale-Out deployment. Though a failover clustered SSRS deployment is achievable, it is not the best option for achieving High Availability with Reporting Services.
