how do i report emails that are apparently filtered by apple as junk and not being sent to my account?

  • Outlook Junk Email False Positives

    Starting yesterday I have had several clients call me about false positives (good emails going to Outlook Junk Email folder).  In some cases they are even internal emails being mis-routed to Junk email.  In all of the cases they are running either
    Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 onsite and the Outlook clients are 2007 or 2010.  As I said everything was fine until yesterday but with the holiday on Wed some may have not noticed until yesterday or today.  Is there some update on Tues or Wed of
    this week (12/31/13) on the server or Outlook workstations causing this?  I have not changed a thing and I need to get this resolved.

    ok, that makes sense but there are 2 things that are going on that don't fit that bill.
    1.  This is happening on multiple domains so I doubt I have an rbl list problem with multiple domains at the same time.  I have confirmed this with checking a few of them for rbl listings and they are clean.
    2.  This is happening even with internal email (email to email in same domain going through the same Exchange server).  That is the one that really gets me as internal emails should never be filtered to Junk.
    The last definition update I see is from 12/11/13.  I am not sure where to look to see where it gets it's daily updates from.

    Depends on your email provider and the type of email account (POP vs. IMAP). If it is a POP account, you likely would need to log into the providers website to see it.

    Trying to deal with the Outlook Junk Email Filter is not very easy and had been a pain in the butt.
    The ONLY way to ensure the Outlook 2010 Junk Email filter honors "white listed" emails is to stamp the email with SCL -1. Setting a transport rule will do that but it is not very flexible. 
    I was able to resolve these issues by simply enabling the Exchange 2010 Anti-Spam agents on each hub transport server. We have no Edge Server but we use a couple of Ironports at the gateway which provide the bulk of AntiSpam. We didn't think we would
    need the Exchange AntiSpam so we hadn't initially enabled. After months of trying to resolve people's complaints of emails from internal system ending up in Junk, this solution worked for us.
    This is the order in which it was done.
    1. We set the receive connectors for the internal systems for bypassing Anti Spam. We basically have 2 receive connectors, one for internal system with no relay, and one for internal systems who are allowed external relay.
    Get-ReceiveConnector "server\name of the recieve connector" | Add-ADPermission -User "“NT Authority\Anonymous Logon”  -AccessRights ExtendedRight
    -ExtendedRights ms-exch-bypass-anti-spam
    Note: If you use SMTP Authentication, Exchange will only mark the emails as "Internal" and not assign a SCL of -1. It can only be on anonymous connections.
    Note: We have a separate receive connector for the Ironports delivering external email that will not bypass Anti-Spam. These emails will receive a SCL rating of 0-9
    2. We set the global SCL to 6 (default is 4). You can set it to whatever you want.
    Set-OrganizationConfig -SCLJunkThreshold 6
    So basically, any email tagged with SCL 7-9 will be moved to Junk by Exchange.
    3. Set-ContentFilterConfig -SCLQuarantineEnabled $False -SCLDeleteEnabled $False -SCLRejectEnabled $False
    We don't want delete, reject or quarantine anything on Exchange. Just move email to Junk folder if SCL 7-9 and have user deal with it.
    4. Set the Internal SMTP Servers by adding each Exchange server's IP Address to the Global Transport Settings. I used EMC, Organization Config, Global Settings, Transport Settings properties, Message Delivery tab. Do NOT add any other "internal" servers
    here, only the Exchange servers.
    5. Then we installed the AS agents on each HT Server.
    Starting with the first server
    Stop MSExchange Transport service
    D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Scripts>.\install-AntispamAgents.ps1
    After installation, disable all the agents except for Content Filtering Agent. This agent has to be enabled for Exchange to stamp the email with SCL -1. I used EMC, Organization Config, Hub Transport. You will see a new tab called Anti-Spam. Disable everything
    except Content Filtering.
    Start MSExchange Transport service.
    Repeat on each HT server. (You won't have to repeat the disabling of the agents as that is a global setting)
    6. You can add global safe senders by doing the following.

    Good Luck. This has basically stopped all the calls about "legitimate" email in Junk Email folder.

  • Junk email rule causing problems with mailbox restore

    Running the command new-restoremailboxrequest on Exchange 2010 SP1.  The restore fails and the following event is logged which seems to indicate a conflict with the Junk Email rule.  I've tried disabling junk email by using set-mailboxjunkemailconfiguration
    -Enabled $false but still get this failure.  Any suggestions?

    I am having the same issue as well.  Following the steps in KB924297 did not allow me to complete the move of a mailbox from Exchange 2003.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

  • Junk email addresses appearing in address book

    For some reason I have tons of junk email addresses appearing in my Mail address -- I have no idea how they got there. Here are just two examples, there are hundreds:

    Well, yes, maybe. I'm a little paranoid -- I download in the regular user account, scan with clamxav, drop the scanned download into the admin dropbox, fast-user-switch to the admin account, move the download to an "installers" folder that I maintain, and install from the admin account. Log out and back in to the standard account. I guess, yeah, if you are doing forty separate software updates and upgrades every day, a process like mine is a little problematic. On the other hand, the Applications folder isn't writeable from a standard user account without authenticating as an administratively privileged user and I just don't do that.
    Actually, that may not quite be true. Although I don't operate that way, you could probably install from the standard user account by authenticating the installer as an admin user from within the standard user account. That kind of defeats the purpose, anyways, if the standard user account has been compromised by a hidden applescript keystroke logger or something, if such thing were to exist.
    Having a separate administrator and standard user account are a trade-off that you have to decide upon: are the added safety and security practices worth a loss of user experience convenience? Once you figure out, if you are able to figure out, how your Address Book started getting loaded up with rogue email addresses, you might be better able to make that determination for your own situation. Page 33 of the snow leopard security guide (http://images.apple.com/support/security/guides/docs/SnowLeopardSecurity_Configv10.6.pdf) recommends having separate administrator and daily use accounts. But, in the end, that's your call. The guide tells you how to lock your computer down so tightly that it's almost worthless.
    With regards to anti-malware, your best bet is to see what respected sites like macworld and others have to say, and just do some google searches. I'm in no position to make a recommendation. With clamxav, which is what I use, the price is right but I can't say how proactive a freeware/donationware anti-malware entity might be when that new occasional Mac malware comes out.
    While I have suggested you performing an anti-MacMalware scan, that may or may not resolve your issue, and offer up some thoughts on future operating practices that really don't help you now, I can only wish you good luck on solving your AddressBook problem. Please post back when you do, I'm sure everyone here would like to be made aware of what and how it happened, and what they can do to do to prevent it.

  • Login Stats "false-positive"?

    This deals with login stats... (I've not done any coding yet - just trying to hypothesize first... but will use CF queries)
    I'm sure there's a way to do this but can't quite figure it. I know it's easy enough to do a database row count or add the 'number fields' in a
    database column for a total, but - how to do this without getting a "false positive" as per below?
    Goal: To find the name of the school with the lowest number of Teacher logins.
    The LoginCounter database field is set up as a 'number field' and adds an increment of 1 each time a teacher logs in to the site. (for my counter code
    to work, this field starts with a default of 1). I have a SchoolName field in the TeacherID row, associating a Teacher with a school and, currently
    there are 5 schools... I don't have to do any kind of table join - all fields are in one table.
    No problem with pulling a total on the total number of logins of ALL teachers in ALL schools or All teachers in THIS school and then comparing this
    number between the different schools.
    But I can see more than one "false positive" per the following:
    Say, there are 20 TeacherID in School_01 and 40 TeacherID in School_02. And say, totaling the LoginCounter column shows a total of 30 teacher logins
    for School_01 and 50 teacher logins for School_02. By just adding up the total LoginCounter per school would show that School_01 has the lowest number
    of teacher logins.
    However, you have to take into consideration that some teachers may have only logged in once (or rather, none)... as well as considering that, say, 15
    teachers out of 20 teachers in School_01 may have logged in a total of 30 times... when, at School_02, one teacher may have logged in 35 times along
    with 5 of his colleagues logging in once apiece. In this scenario School_01 still has the lowest total of loggins but School_02 actually has the poorer
    score of total teacher logins.
    How would I average the number of teachers per school with the total number of schools with the number of logins per teacher to
    obtain an accurate count of actual teacher logins? An "over-zealous" teacher, logging in way more numerous times than other teachers would throw the
    final figure off...
    Is it even possible to obtain an accurate comparison the way I have the database fields set up? I guess (the way I have it set up) I can only consider the LoginCounter fields that have only a "1" (the number of teachers who have never logged in) and get an average to compare between schools. But if all the teachers in a school have logged in numerous times, I'll have to find some kind of "representative number" based on some kind of average between the number of teachers in a school and (the part I can't figure) some kind of average of each teacher's login total.
    In retrospect, after re-reading this before posting... I guess I have only two things here: (1) The total number of logins per school (disregarding an
    'over-zealous' teacher and, (2) a count on teachers who have never logged in, compared between schools. I just don't know if I can get an accurate
    count for "Lowest Number of Logins School" if all teachers in a school have logged in numerous times... Is there a way to get some kind of average, or rather some 'representative number'  based on the number of teachers per school and each one's login total? Or, maybe each teacher's LoginCount doesn't even come into play here... (I know this sounds a bit confusing.)

    All of you are right about the LoginCounter not having to have a default of "1". I had forgotten that, when a participating school is set up, all teachers are set up with a unique "generic-basic unique login" name and password -- just to be able to login on "Training Day". They can change their name and password once they are in their admin section. Teachers who aren't there on "Training Day" are sent an email with instructions on logging in for the first time and changing their name and password. I guess what I'm saying is that, when a participating school 'comes on board', all the participating teachers are added to the database before they even start using the teacher admin section. Maybe it doesn't matter -- I just didn't want an empty or null value when each row is set up...
    The login code is as follows, running on the 'validation page' upon login submit.

    So... "0" + "1" = "1" ... I just wasn't sure, when I wrote the code, if this field could be left blank ("blank" + "1")... so, when the individual's row is first entered I put a default "1" here -- since, for training purposes they are already set up to go into the admin section with a pre-created name and password. I figured I could always subtract "1" from the individual's LoginCounter field for accuracy.
    I think 12Roberts login ratio is probably what I'm looking for -- Login Ratio: A = total number of teachers and Z = teachers who have never logged in...... Login Ratio = A-Z. (In my existing case a field value of "1" would equal a teacher who has never logged in and a field value of "2" would be a teacher who has logged in once.) I know, I know -- Why don't I just make it complicated or something, LOL.)
    I think I was over-blowing my question and 12Robots simple Login Ration is what I was looking. Thanks, 12Robots and, thanks to all for the input. I'm going to mark this post as 'solved' since, the way I have this set up, this ratio is about all I can do with a "lowest login school count".

  • Possible avast! anti-virus false positive on imac

    greetings, installed the free avast! anti-virus software earlier today & ran a scan on my imac. results showed 2 infections of - Win32:Injector-AEO[Trj] . so i did a quick search & found that the win32 virus should have no effect on a mac. is that true? but that i could possible infect others pc's? also found that avast! is know for false positives, presumably so they can get you to upgrade to their expensive pay service. there seems to be no way to remove the infections with the free software avast! provided. i was advised to de-install the avast! software - which i did. so i was wondering what the best course of action is at this point? get norton or something & rescan, or what?

    Windows malware does not affect OS X. It is true you can pass along the malware to another through email assuming the malware came to you in email and you forwarded the email to others.
    In general you have no need for such protection in OS X at this time. You would be better off with no such software installed.

    If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)

  • Tuning issue with false positive

    One of my clients moved two of their email devices to a DMZ. The both produce alerts on the mass mailing worm alert. Before they were moved to the DMZ, you would see the alert and it would have a source and destination IP. Now it only has the destination IP address of where the device is sending email to. Since the MARS does not pick up the devices new IP address, I cannot false positive tune these alerts out. How would I go about fixing this issue?

    When the IDS mistakenly thinks that normal traffic is malicious then false positives happen To reduce them you have to fine tune the system by letting it know what normal traffic means on your network.

  • How come I dont get any junk email on my desktop computer, but on my mobile device I get them? Some messages that go to junk shouldnt.

    On my desktop I have junk folders but there is never any mail in there. On my iphone i get messages in my junk folders. Sometimes messages that I want to keep are in the junk folder.

    Most likely you use POP for your desktop, and IMAP for your phone.
    The provider's spam filter classifies messages as junk and puts them into the junk folder on the server. That's what you see on your phone.
    With your desktop you have no visibility of the junk folder on the server.
    You'd need to adjust filtering on the server if that is possible at all. Otherwise checking for false positives is your best bet.
    Alternatively you could setup your account as IMAP on the desktop as well and let Thunderbird do all the spam filtering.

  • Cannot move junk email to Bulk Mail folder in Yahoo, greyed out

    I've searched but so far no luck.  Ever since I added my two Yahoo email accounts on my iPhone 4, I cannot seem to send junk email from my inbox to my Bulk Mail folder, it is greyed out.  First off, I've confirmed that the Bulk Mail folder on my iPhone is the same as my Spam folder in Yahoo mail on the desktop.  I can see the same emails in both folders.  Anyone have the same experience and found a way to correct this, or is this just a Yahoo limitation?

    I am having the same problem, but I'm not very clear on how to follow the steps.
    went to my yahoo account in IOS;
    hit edit, hit "new mailbox" at the bottom right corner of the screen;
    entered a name;
    below that, it has "Mailbox Location", I opened it;
    it list all my personal folders, I am stuck here.
    How do I "point the mailbox location to the Bulk Mail folder", as instructed? Am I missing a step?

    Is it happening in OWA also (I assume, YES)
    After you tested the Test Mailbox, and if it's working without any issue then try these things.
    Run Outlook and SafeMode and check the issue.
    Disable the Mailbox and Enable it, Test the issue.
    I also saw the same issue with one of my client (Exchange 2010) but it was happening with few users only. Tried several things, MFC MPAI, Deleting folder (Junk). These things didn't helped, had to disable the Mailbox and Assign new Mailbox and Import the
    PST into it. They are still monitoring the issue.

    The IPS generated an alert, SMB Remote Registry Access Attempt. How to investigate the alert? I ran a couple of spyware programs on the host and found some cookies-generaly clean. At what point is the alert resigned as a false positive?

  • Cellular signal becomes false positive

    Everything works fine, except after a while the cellular signal becomes a false positive. By this I mean the upper left corner continue to read "Verizon 4G LTE" with a few bars, but there's actually no signal. All apps that require the Internet doesn't work. It's an easy fix though — in Settings, the Cellular Data has to be turned off, then turned back on. And by "after a while" I mean when it falls into sleep mode after a FaceTime session, then awoken. Not sure exactly how long afterwards. Not sure if it's consistently after one nap or longer. Not sure if running other apps would do the same thing.
    Question is:
    Is this normal?
    I can imagine the upside is that you don't waste data in a prepaid data plan like when background apps continue to run.
    The dreadful downside, however, is that any incoming FaceTime call cannot get through.
    If this is NOT normal, is it a common glitch/bug/quirk? And how to fix it?

    You can't begin measuring velocity until it is positive unless you have already been measuring velocity.
    The solution is to always do the measurement.  Evaluate it with a >0.  In the true condition, then do whatever it is you want to do.
