Fan control unable to display RPM

Hi,
I've been following this, but I've run into a problem. I cannot seem to find my chipset in /etc/sensors3.conf. Here is the output from lm-sensors:
radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1:        +60.5°C  (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0:  +44.0°C  (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 0:         +38.0°C  (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1:         +41.0°C  (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 2:         +40.0°C  (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 3:         +44.0°C  (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
I'm really not sure how I should go about displaying my fan RPM from here. If anybody is interested in helping me solve this I can provide any hardware details requested.

Hello,
Check if you missed any of the below
1. Did you follow this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lm_sensors before you sat up fan control?
2. If you did, maybe this is what you need: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/fa … ng_fan_div
3. During lm_sensors setup - did you had any errors?
4. Make sure the modules from lm_sensors is started correctly as discussed in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1251766

  • Fan speed + CPU temperature displayed wrong?

Hey guys. I've been writing my bachelors thesis on my Mac for about a month now so it's been on pretty much non-stop. The thing is that I mainly use Office Word. So no flash and stuff that would make the fan speed up that fast. It's not hot in my room either. Thing is that it is possible that there is some dust there and I will check that out once I'm done with this thesis.
I have SMC Fan Control and SSD Fan Control installed. The rpm is very often (80% of the time) up to 6500rpm. It shows the same rpm on SMC F.C. and SSD F.C.. What I don't understand is why the two different programs show a 30degrees celsius (86 fahrenheit) difference. SMC often shows the temp. above 105 degrees celsius (221 fahrenheit) whereas SSD will say it's 75 celsius (167 fahrenheit) at the same time. Also 105 celsius really doesn't sound good.
On the top right you can see SMC with 83 celsius and the open program is SSD with 55 celsius
Do you guys know these programs? Do you understand the difference shown in the display?
    Thank you!!

no worries.....i was just checking if anyone knew if a kernel compile was avoidable, becasue once you do it once you have to keep on comiling the kernel if you want a new one.....oh well it doesn't seem that i'll have this problem as it doesn;t look like the patches are updaed very often
hang on what am i talking about, this is why i'm using arch linux.....to be a nerd and do everything by hand....;)
Oh and i did have a proper read through the README file and no mention of any dependancies is made (is was quite a short readme file whose only useful information was "do ./configure , make , make install"

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:
Learn about the fans in your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

  • SMFC Fan control

I installed the SMFC fan control app to cool down my rmbp but im now paranoide about the defult settings so i deleted the program and shut down my mac and turned it on again hoping it's now at it's defult values... So i thought i'd reset the SMC too, does this make the fan speed defult again by resetting the SMC?

smcFanControl may damage your Mac if you set up a very high fan speed for a long time. If not, it doesn't have to damage anything.
I don't know the default fan speed for the MacBook Pro with Retina display, but 2000 rpm is a too high fan speed

I have a dell vostro 1710, no fan running at all!
I have opened it, and saw it spinning for a while on notebook power on, so it looks like it works
Do not remember if this is happening a long time ago, or maybe after a Syu... but now temp is on 62 doing stuff, 74 watching a video..... it will be more than 80 in summer? lol
Will install and configure i8kutils I guess....

  • 848P Neo-LS Fan Control

As said - no control of the damn fans (Case/CPU) on my 848P Neo-LS. On the CoreCenter the button lits up on mouseover, but when pressed, nothin' happens (as said in manual, press to toggle user/auto modes for fan control).
Also CoreCenter doesn't show the Case fan's speed, but Northbridge (NB fan) fan's speed, which is obviously 0. Also NB temp is N/A. Also +12V is N/A. Also the FSB stays always at 101 Mhz, not 100. No overclocking done.
Today upgraded the CoreCenter to the most recent vers (1.7.0.0.), and the button doesn't lit up anymore...?
When I installed SpeedFan 4.17, it allows me to control the Case fan's speed from 2300 - 2700, but nothing more. Interesting.
    CPU - Celeron 2.0
    RAM - 256 MB Kingston
CPU Fan - OEM intel fan A80856-003
    Case Fan - MJ 802512
Both fans with speed sensors, of course.
    Should I update the bios?
    Help somebody!

To be sure I opened the case and stopped the fans by hand (I don't use the corecenter prg - piece of crap), to see that i have mistaken both fans (in SpeedFan prg). The one who varies by 400 rpm is the Cpu fan.
    Doooh.
The bios health screen doesn't show +12V at all - just aint there...
The MSI tech support sez - flash the bios, and if anything doesnt change, the CoreCell chip has gone (faulty, whatever).
Flashed the bios (1.0 - 1.9 now). No changes.

  • Enabling system fan control on lenovo s30

Hi there, i am familiar with the BIOS setup for fan control, except, i do not know how to load a "user profile" vs factory default. Does S30 even support user fan control, my d20 would allow me to select several presets, however, the s30 bios only allows two options one of them being user preset? How do i load this preset (i want the fans running at higher rpm for additional cooling). Any insight is appreciated.

There are a few differences in the fan control design between 20 series and 30 series.  In 20 series, you're correct that there were a couple of selectable presets available.  For 30 series, we took a different approach where the fan speed control was set to a standard profile for all users.  We did, however, have the ability for our BIOS team to create unique fan tables that would be meant for specific customer environments.  The only way to use one of these custom tables would be to work directly with our BIOS team as each table would need to be manually created.  So custom tables are not supported for general field use.
We chose that route on 30 series because a very large majority of our customers never changed the default fan settings (the thermals on 20 series were so good they rarely had a reason to do so).
Is there a specific reason you want to change the fan control, or is this just a tinkering-type question?

  • MS Notepad unable to display the Chinese characters I type and display them as squares

MS Notepad is unable to display the Chinese characters I type and display them as squares. But when I copy those squares on notepad to Wordpad or MS Word, they display the Chinese characters just fine. I've no idea why those Chinese characters I type can't display properly on notepad. I check the font of the notepad and it's the default. I've another Windows Vista desktop computer which has notepad of the similar setting and display Chinese characters just fine. Both are using Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin New Experience Input Style to input those characters. But I don't understand why my Windows 7 is facing this problem.

    Hi,
Notepad is a very simple text editor BUT it will work if you use the SAME language in Windows. Please try:
    1. go to control panel, click "Clock, Language, and Region"
    2. click "Change location" under the "Region" section
    3. go to the "administrative" tab, then click "change system locale...", then select "Chinese".

  • Fan Control and Leopard

While I am happy with Leopard, it killed my Fan Control - now I face a roasting each time I use my MBP. Anyone know if this little gem will be updated for 10.5? Fan speeds of 1500rpm just don't cut it with a Core Duo.

Same here. Fan control from preferences quit working. I'd set it and when I open it back up again, it would be reset to 0. Also I don't know how I could get a -14360 rpm reading on both of my fans. Didn't know a fan could generate negative rpms...
My fix.. get the SMCfan Control and set you minimum speed for your fans... It also will give you the temperature of your computer. Works for now... I'd rather have the fan control feature back...

  • Fan Control Apps for MacPro 2.93 Mhz ....

Ok, I figured out how to disable Fan Control.
Now I only have smcFanControl installed. I can hear the fans running all the time now. Before I installed FanControl and smcFanControl I could rarely ever hear the fans, even during the hot summer.
I have the slider controls set to the minimum, but the fans still run constantly, and my room is in the 50s F.
I really don't think the fans should be running all the time. The only way I can find to stop this, is to delete smcFanControl.
Is there any other FanControl apps that will allow you to adjust the fan speeds so the fans will not run all the time?

the fans are suppose to and need to run.... all the time.
but normal default is 499/599 rpm
boosting the minimum default is useful
you can have and should have profiles for low-medium-high if you push and use your system heavily
    sounds like you have
too many cooks - spoils the soup
    corrupt preference file
are not using the SmcFanControl for intended purpose and as designed
most people do create multiple sets and have "my default' (for want of a name) @ 800-900 which improves air flow and thermal temps while still being quiet.
older FBDIMMs are HOT and helps keep them in the 60's *C or if you have a hot GPU and need more air flow
maybe you have dust or other issues or the Mac  Pro is recycling its own hot exhaust
The thing to look at is WHAT is (hardware) Monitor showing for your TEMPS from the thermal sensors as to what is or is not normal
And reset the SMC / and delete the plist files used
Never use more than one background utilty for a job and keep all of such utilities to a MINIMUM for best fastest stable and for performance, they do add up, they do matter. "Less is more."

  • P35 Neo - Sys Fan control

I have a P35 Neo and recently i bought a cooler and a fan for my Ati4850.I connected the fan to the Sys Fan 1 but to my dissapointment i cant control the rpm of the fan through the Dual core center .
I took a look at Bios but i couldnt find anything useful.
    Do i miss something ?
I even download Speedfan but didnt help .

I don't know of any that would have fan speed control for anything other than CPU fan. The only thing I can suggest would be to purchase a fan control module of some kind that goes in an empty drive bay. Something like >> this <<

  • How to use fan control?

I just downloaded fan control because it sounds like a good idea to keep this puppy cool. What is a good setting that isn't going to be overkill. I don't want to compromise battery life too much. Anyone good with this program? This is for my MBP 15"

I see nothing there about "firmware" specifically. "...non-Apple products" could refer to any third-party software.
Some might argue that (e) applies, but these fan utilities don't "significantly alter functionality or capability". None allows settings below Apple's default 1000 rpm setting. Nor do they defeat the default Auto fan mode, which increases fan rpms as the temperature increases.
Most of the people passing on warranty scares are well meaning, but the facts don't support their contention.
These fan utilities in no way resemble the thermal paste mods that were kicking around these forums a few months back. Remember? And even then, some here maintained that mod (where you actually open the machine) did NOT void the warranty as long as there was no damage done.
Heck, Apple doesn't even warrant their own software!

  • Is it bad to use Fan Control?

So I was looking into running Boinc (donating CPU time to run science projects aka grid computing) on my computer and installed Fan Control so I turn up my fans to keep to comp cooler. I have hence been convinced that it isn't the best idea to run your CPU so high on an MBP since I didn't want to wear out the fan and/or damage any hardware near the CPU. I still have Fan Control installed. Is this okay? I have heard mixed things about manually controlling fan speeds? Should I go to the trouble of uninstalling, or can I just leave it on low settings? What settings should I put it on?
Thanks for all of your help!
And a shout out to all those students out there: Happy winter break! We made it!

There really is no need for third-party fan controls. The OS is already configured to increase fan speeds in response to higher operating temperatures. So uninstalling the software is appropriate. However, you need to return the fan configuration to its original setting(s) which is an idle speed of 2000 RPM for each fan (if your model has more than one.) Once you do that you can then uninstall the software using the uninstaller, if it has one. Otherwise, see the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Dell Vostro 3560 CPU Fan Control Tips

I'm in the process of configuring my brand new Vostro 3560 and one of the things I noticed was that the CPU fan was blasting full speed all the time even when the machine was idle. After some researching I came up with the following solution using i8kmon and I'll post it here for others:
Disclaimer 1: In this configuration, you will be setting up thresholds on what fan speeds are used at a specific temperature. If you use this config, this assumes that your machine is a) reporting the correct temperature and b) the fan speed setting works for your specs. Always monitor your laptop and change the configuration if your laptop feels too hot.
Disclaimer 2: I've only had this laptop for a couple of days now, so no long-term stress testing has been performed in this configuration.
This is a link that helped me a lot. It's Ubuntu specific, so be aware of the differences: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s … ion/204193.
Please post any thoughts or feel free to correct me where applicable:
    Install the following packages:
    i8kmon
    i8kutils
    Create/modify the following config files:
    /etc/modules-load.d/i8k.conf
    # Load Dell Fan Speed Control (i8k) at boot
    i8k
/etc/conf.d/i8kmon. Please note that there are conflicting values reported when you Google this. In my case, the following worked:
    # Arguments to be passed to the i8kmon daemon
    I8KMON_ARGS="--nouserconfig --daemon"
/etc/rc.conf. Add i8kmon to your DAEMONS:
    DAEMONS=(hwclock ... i8kmon ...)
    /etc/i8kutils/i8kmon.conf
This is the file where you set the temperature thresholds and fan speeds in the "set config" values. Your specific laptop configuration could be different, so Google around.
    Lines changed:
    set config(daemon) 1
    set config(auto) 1
    set config(timeout) 2

    set config(3) {{- 2} 70 128 70 128}
edit: changed temperature thresholds - I think the key temps are: 55: turn on fan at level 1 until cooled down to 45. Above 60, start blasting the fan at full speed

If you're using systemd, to run i8kmon you should edit i8kmon.service file
    /usr/lib/systemd/system/i8kmon.service
    from
    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/i8kmon -nd
    to
    [Service]

When I first installed Arch on my Vostro laptop back in October '12, I had to run the i8kmon and i8kutils to get the fan control to work. Without it, the fan was blasting at full speed all the time, no matter what the CPU temperature was.
However, this week I started noticing odd behavior in my fan control, in that the i8kmon service would start, but fail silently and the fan would remain off, no matter the temperature (not good). Here's the mystery: I disabled the i8kmon.service and since then my fan control is now BETTER then ever! The fan speed gradually increases and decreases based on system load, it's perfect.
Does anyone know what may be going on here? Perhaps the 3.8 kernel now supports this fan without special drivers? Of course, it could have been from earlier than 3.8, but I always had i8kmon running...?

Use the special key combo - It works on most Dell systems
Shift + FN + 1 5 3 2 4  from a VGA tty console - three lights will flash and one remain flashing. This enables a special Thermal management settings screen. Press FN + R to access it, you can change the fan speed, adjust the throttling and so on.
I need to set the fan speeds to 6000 and 5000 RPM, after which i8kfan 2 2 will reach max speed. Don't use this mode from within X, the system suspends everything else when in that mode and it goes into a VGA console, so things can screw up with the Wifi and the video adapter sometimes.
