FANS kick in very late
Hi - I wanted to know if there's any way I could control the fans in a way that they would kick in at lower temperatures. I noticed my MacBook is completely quiet - can't hear the fans - until about 67 - 70 deg C. Then they kick in. When idle - the Mac stays around 56 - 62 deg C - I would like it little cooler if possible - Any ideas>?
The company that makes the SpeedIt kernel extension, the one that CoreDuo Temp installs an early version of, is getting closer to releasing a 1.0 version that they claim will allow adjustments to control CPU whine and other things.
http://www.increw.com/speedit.html
If you're interested in monitoring your fan behavior, the developer of the Temperature Monitor application has a shareware program called Hardware Monitor, which now reads fan speed.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16609
My fan runs at 1500 RPM minimum. When I run yes processes to stress the CPUs, the fan kicks in as the temp hits about 75 deg C, speeds up rapidly to the specified max of 6200 RPM, stays at that speed until the temp drops from a max of about 81 deg C to about 66 deg C, and then adjusts itself to keep that temp. When the CPU load is removed, the fan drops to the 1500 RPM minimum again.
Hardware Monitor also reads CPU frequency, which for me runs 1333 MHz mostly, dipping to 1000 occasionally, and of course rising to 2000 max. The steps seem to be 1000, 1333, 1500, 1667, 2000. The readings from Core Duo Temp that I've seen recently posted (always maxed out) are apparently bogus. (I don't run CoreDuo Temp.)
Lastly, reading your post about your idle temperature, I glanced at my temperature, which usually reads about 40 deg C at low load. I was surprised to see it at 53 deg C. I looked at Activity Monitor and saw that there was a process called coreaudiod using about 9% CPU. (I didn't have any audio apps running.) After a little googling, I killed it, and as expected the system immediately started a new instance, but one that wasn't using measurable CPU. The temperature immediately dropped by 12 deg C, to the usual 40-ish. The point being, I guess, that if you have unusual temps to check to see if there are any processes chewing up CPU that you can identify that shouldn't be.

When do your fans kick in?
Hey,
So basically I have this issue with my MacBook Pro (it seems to be an issue) that my fans kick in pretty late. At about 200-210F is when my fans kick in no matter what ever I do. I can play a game, or do whatever I want but my fans seem to run at 1996-2006 RPM speed the lowest default speed.
I have the MacBook Pro Mid-2012 2.9Ghz, i7 Processor with 8 GB of ram.
I'm wondering if I can get different results from different people regarding when your fans kick in and at what temperature.
I used iStat Menus to determine my RPM speed and temperature.
Thanks!Gaming will demand maximum performance from your Mac, but it won't damage it. As its temperature limit is approached the system will throttle the CPU so as not to exceed it. If that doesn't reduce its thermal load the Mac will simply shut down.
I still think 200°F is too high but I'm not much of a gamer and have difficulty getting my MBPs to get anywhere near that temperature, but if Apple says they examined yours and determined it to be OK then I'm inclined to believe it's OK.
It's normal for the case to feel warm, but not excessively hot. Don't impede the Mac's heat dissipation by using cases or "skins" because the entire aluminum housing serves as a heat sink.
If you are interested in extracting meaningful data, consider the following. While the game is running and the MBP is hot enter the following line in Terminal (triple-click to select the entire line, then copy and paste it into the Terminal window):
clear; printf '\e[3J'; P='pmset' S='\n####' Q=(Thermal Load Events Assertions Preemptions) R=(therm sysload 2 3 4) ; printf $S\ ${Q[0]}'\n'; $P -g ${R[0]} ; printf $S\ ${Q[1]}'\n'; $P -g ${R[1]} | tail -n 4 2>&1
Select All that Terminal window's contents, copy and paste the results in a reply. It may or may not reveal anything noteworthy.

When I shutdown the fan turns on very loud and fast.. Quiet during running
Had my imac about 2 months now its the late 2012 27" iMac
When running its fine... Hardly makes a noise, however today i shut it down and about 5 seconds after it shuts down the fans kick in really loud this never happened before
If I put the computer in sleep mode it does not start fans only when it's shut down... Only way to stop it is to turn it off at the wall
I have run AHT and no problems
I have reset both SMC and PRAM neither fixed it.. Any ideas??anyone?
someone please help!! lol -
I have a Mac Pro with 2 extra HD'S in it. I leave the machine running all the time. After leaving the machine on (without restarting) for like 2 months, I have the fans Kick into high even though CPU load is low. They are very loud and they wont turn off. The only way I have gotten them to turn off is by turning off the computer. Has anyone else had a similar issue?
IanTurn off? hard or soft? ie, does it do a normal shutdown? if not the directory could be damaged.
Apple Hardware Test would be step #1.
Dust build-up or high ambient temperatures or not getting enough ventilation. You could use smcFanControl shareware app to force fans to higher rpm than 500-600 minimum rpm.
SMC Reset would be another. -
Reinstall latest smc update - smcfancontrol made the fans kick in @ 100°C!!
Hello!
I have two questions:
1. How can I reinstall the latest smcfirmware update? OSX tells me its not necessary, thus it doesnt want to. But I want to. How can this be done? In terminal? How to?
2. SMCfancontrol (you know, the little proggie that lets you set the minimum speed of your fans), caused my fans to kick in waaay too late. I tried the yes > /dev/null/, and the fans kicked in at 100°C only. Thats wa too late, and surely not what should happen. I remember, the latest smc update just made the fans kick in even at 60-70°C.
I uninstalled the SMCfancontrol, made PR-Ram reset, and the SMC reset (Holding Start button for 10sek while without battery nor cable), Repaired the permissions.
Still, no luck. I know, my fans and the sensors work fine, as Ministat2 and Coreduotemp work just fine.
Whats wrong, what can I do?1. How can I reinstall the latest smcfirmware update?

As far as I know, you can't. If you think the SMC firmware may be corrupt, you'll have to ask AppleCare.

SMCfancontrol doesn't affect when your fans kick in. Since the firmware update, the fans run all the time. SMCfancontrol simply tells them how fast to run with low load/temperature.
If your fans are off until 60C then there is a problem with your firmware. Call AppleCare. After the update, as I said, the fans should be running at 1500RPM at all times, increasing when system load or temperature goes up. I know mine hit 6000RPM when the system load hits 90% or the temperature hits 60C, whichever is first. The 'yes' test causes both cores to run at 100%, which means the fans should be maxed out pretty much straight away.
Whats wrong, what can I do?
Call AppleCare. -
Satellite C660 - Fan is launching very often
Hi
I am using Toshiba C660 laptop. I noticed, that fan is launching very often (temperature is 45-52 C ). I have tried to change "Toshiba Power Saver Settings V8.9.4.64" to "Battery optimized" in "Advanced power settings" but this didn't helps. I updated my BIOS to 1.80 version but it did't helps, too. When will be the new BIOS for this model?Hello
Please dont understand me wrong but fan acitivy will be controlled automatically and is depending on CPU temperature. The fan will always start if CPU is running on high temperature to protect the hardware. So its normal.
What you can do after some months is cleaning the cooling system as described here:

Why did my iMac fan come on very noisy after 1 hour of use ? I had to turn it off to stop it
Just updated details - os x 10.8.5 .....
found an answer that could have been problem with CPU and a runaway application (possibly Bin Weevils) which my son was running at the time. I shall check the activity monitor next time to see what percentage cpu is being used..

Early Mac Pro reboots fan kicks on
Mac Pro early 2008 reboots and fan kicks turns on high speed during reboot. I have tried dusting, resetting SMC, power cords, different outlets, pulled out ramm and reinserted it, restored energy saving defaults, reset pramm, ran disk utility. Any Advice?
Hi,
Turned on computer this morning and after 15 minues it rebooted and fans came on. I restarted the computer in safe mode and all seemed well. I restarted the computer and it rebooted twice then the fans came on and are still on. I will be able to use the computer all day with no problems as long as the fans are on high. I followed the directions on kernel panic and am not for sure if what I pasted below is the information you requested. It was in the DiagnosticReports folder and had the same time as when the computer crashed. Thanks!

Fans kick in when HDMI port is used
When I connect a TV to HDMI port, then fans start to kick in seriosly without noticeable CPU load increase. I've also tried to use Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter instead of using HDMI port directly and got same effect.
I have my external monitor connected using Thunderbolt-DVI adapter and everything is fine and MacBook is super quiet.
Fans don't directly kick in based on CPU load, but rather on MacBook casing temperature. I guess something in HDMI singnal generating code is heating up something inside MacBook and fans kick in to compensate for that.
Not sure if it's normal or not. They are probably compensating for the increased load on the GPU.
I wonder if it's a standard behavior, because I haven't seen this described anywhere in docs. I guess if I connect 3 monitors as once I will get even higher fan noise, which is dissapointing.
You can try a SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself
And this magic sleep/reset/shutdown combination will do SMC reset for sure? Doing that SMC reset won't erase anything on my mac or reset any settings I've set in "System Settings? -
Choppy performance when fan kicks in
Now that it's summer and getting warmer in my studio, I notice that the FCP playback gets choppy and generally gets weird as my G-5's fan kicks in. Does this make sense? It is making me a bit anxious. Despite my efforts to cool things off it reaches about 80 in our workspace in the heat of the day.
There is a nifty application called Temperature Monitor you may want to look into. It reads all the temp sensors in your machine and you can keep an eye on the trends. It is a great monitoring tool when you want to experiment with alternative cooling strategies.
In the FWIW category, I've found a simple smalll fan blowing air around my 17" Powerbook will keep the temps 10 degrees F cooler (or more) on hot days. Often enough to keep the fans from kicking in and from getting so hot I end up sweating all over the keyboard.
Also, do a search for CHUD in the developer forum. It is another nifty app that allows you to set your processors to sleep when not in use. It has a big effect on heat generation. It was a life saver with some of the 'aircraft jet fan noise ' problems with earlier tower models.
Good luck.

Is there a way to change the CPU temperature at which fans kick in?
Well, the subject says it all. The fan in my MBP will not kick in until the CoreDuo reaches 94 C, and then drops it off to about 86-88 degrees. Normally, however, the CPU temp does not get higher than about 75 degrees, and most of the time it is below that.
However, reading from other posters, it appears that for several of the MBP the fans kick in at about 85 degrees, cool it off to below 80. I am thinking that the fans in my MBP not kicking in until 94 C could be due to:
1- Faulty temperature detection by some unit or another
2- Faulty fan (though a number of Hardware tests have not revealed anything, and I hear the fans loud and clear)
3- Different Temp monitors outputing slightly different readings (I am using Temperature Monitor. Another program, CoreDuo Temp gives the same reading)
Any help?My guess would be that you have a particularly bad thermal paste job. If you can demonstrate at the store that the fans don't kick in before 95 C, you might be eligible for an exchange. My advice would be to go complain about it.
Ps. CoreDuoTemp and Temperature Monitor both use the speedit.kext, the latter just doesn't give credit. -

Qosmio F30-112: cooling fan is running very fast
Hi,
I want to ask somebody thier, my laptop qosmio F30 -112 recently every time i start my computer i heard that the cooling fan is running very fast (i mean) it wasn't stop unlike before its running smooth only i heard it when i playing games but not continuous, then after that my computer now running slow.
Somebody can help me what im going to do?
thanks: rtmasagcaHi
F30 is a little bit older notebook series I think about 3 years old or older... did you clean the cooling modules in the meantime?
I think there is a lot of dust and debris inside the notebook and I think this prevents the air from circulation and therefore the fans run faster.
Try compressed air spray this should help to remove dust and debris.
Good luck -
Fan kicks in...
Good Morning,
Trying to find out about the fan in my Macbook.
It seems that when I play the Prime suspect game the fan kicks in and start spinning. What is the normal temperature for a macbook? Is my macbook bad? I ran smart fan application and once i start the game i can see the temperature going up ....
Please any suggestion will be apprecciated.
ThanksThe fans are supposed to ramp up while running graphic intensive apps such as games.
This will keep your MacBook from overheating and shutting itself off.
Reported average MacBook temps range from 40-80 celcius.
If you don't know what you're doing,I highly recommend you don't adjust fan settings.

Hi, I have the How-to guide mentioned in the subject and have now moved onto BI7. Is the guide still applicable in BI7 and how would I go about implementing the above How-to in IP instead of BPS? Thanks, Ale
