Fast Web View breaking links/bookmarks in PDFs from Word 2007

I'm running Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 on WinXP, and I recently noticed an issue with PDFs that I'm creating from Word 2007. If I turn on the setting "Save As optimizes for Fast Web View," any links or bookmarks in the file break when I do a Save As. If I turn the setting back off, Save As doesn't break them.
I had had problems creating the PDFs using the PDFMaker plug-in for Word, so I used the Save As PDF or XPS feature from Microsoft instead.
PDFs created using FrameMaker are not giving me problems.
I don't know whether this is related, but the Settings button on the Save As dialog box is no longer active. I'm sure I was able to click it before, but I can't now. And that goes for PDFs from Word or FrameMaker.
Anyone have any clues?

This is related to a bug in the direct PDF output from Word 2007. I was told that Microsoft has fixed this bug in the final SP2 release (so when the service pack becomes available, this problem will not be present).
Until then, the workaround is indeed to turn off the "Save As optimizes for Fast Web View" preference in Acrobat (Edit > Preferences > Documents, under Save Settings).

  • Acrobat Pro 9.1 no longer creates PDFs from Word 2007

I upgraded from Acrobat 7 to 9 specifically to gain more control over settings when making PDFs from Word 2007. This worked as I had hoped until the 9.1 vulnerability upgrade was installed. Now it will no longer create PDFs from Word 2007 documents at all.
From within Word 2007, when I click on "Create PDF" (whether in the Office menu or Acrobat toolbar) it asks for a file name, but after I click "Save" does nothing. This is true even for the simplest possible document, using the "Default" settings for PDF "Preferences."
If I right click the file name of the document in Windows Explorer, with Word 2007 closed, and click on "Convert to Adobe PDF" in the menu, it starts and the staus box comes up, but after a few seconds quits and displays "An unexpected error occurred. PDFMaker was unable produce the Adobe PDF."
I can still "Save As" PDF in Word 2007, but this gives me little control over the format.
Is there any way that I can get Acobat 9.1 to do what I bought it for, and what Adobe advertises it will do?

Try printing to the Adobe PDF printer, the more fundamental process (PDF Maker is a preprocessor for the printer). If that does not work, then try with print-to-file selected. Open the file in Distiller and see if the PDF is created. If the latter happens, then check for AcroTray running in the background. It is required to automate the process and is needed by PDF Maker.

  • Why won't copy/paste images appear in PDF (from Word 2007)?

I find all places in a Word 2007 document where content copied from Power Point 2007 and then pasted into a Word 2007 document does not appear in the subsequent PDF file I generate. White space of the same size as the pasted content appears in its place. Why is this happening and are there any suggestions to work around this issue? What is curious is the free PDF creation tool that you can use to generate a PDF within Word 2007 (by choosing file save-as PDF) does NOT have this same issue. I don't want to use Word's tool since it doesn't allow for the option settings flexibility I need to produce the final PDF.
I already tried saving the Word file as XML and then re-saving as Word .docx and regenerating the PDF from Acrobat: the graphics are still missing. I also tried in Acrobat Help> Repair Installation and then shut down/restarted my computer. Again, the regenerated PDF is missing the graphics.
Personally, I do not use a copy/paste method; rather, I use insert>picture>from file or paste special as a grphic file type. I know the same graphics placed this way come out fine in a PDF I generate from Acrobat. However, I support a bunch of engineers who make copy/paste a shortcut habit. I will have no luck telling them not to do this.
I appreciate any help with this.

Preferences in Acrobat reader under Page Display are already set to Show Large Images. I assume that is the setting you mentioned.
I don't know of any setting in Word 2007 that would make a difference. Does anyone else have work around suggestions?

  • Cannot Generate a PDF from Word 2007

I have inherited a 100-page file in Word 2007, and have just encountered a problem when generating a PDF.  (BTW, I have Adobe Reader installed, and I have not yet receieved Acrobat for generating a PDF.)  To reduce file size and to send the file to others in remote locations, I have been saving the Word 2007 file as a PDF, and it has been working up until today.  When the file generated a PDF, it stopped on page 33 and asked if I wanted to send an error report. I have not changed anything on that page.  There is a figure and a table on that page, in addition to some text.  What could be causing the file to stop generating a PDF?  I removed the table and figure, but still the file stops generating on the following page.  I also have checked to make sure I do not have any styles that seem out of place.  Could you provide me with some guidance on what kinds of things I should try and troubleshoot?  Thanks!

If you only have Reader, you can not create a PDF. You would need Acrobat.
If you are "saving" as a PDF from Word, you are using the Microsoft PDF utility rather than Adobe's. You'll want to ask Microsoft support.

  • PDF from Word 2007 ends up with scrambled Chinese characters

I have a problem with PDF files when converted from a Word 2007 document that includes Traditional Chinese characters and I hope someone might be able to help or point me in the right direction. After converting it to PDF via "Create PDF" from the Acrobat toolbar, the Chinese characters are all wrong. It looks like Chinese but none of the characters actually exist, it's all scrambled and useless. Converting English or German text works fine, so far, it's only the Traditional Chinese text that causes problems.
The strange thing is that prior to installing Office 2007, all worked just fine. I could convert Chinese text from Word 2003 without any problems and other than updating to Word 2007, nothing has changed. Any idea where to start trouble shooting and how to fix it? I've already tried re-installing and reparing both Word and Acrobat but no improvement.
OS: WinXP Professional SP3 (English system)
    Adobe: Master Collection CS4 (English)
Acrobat: Acrobat 9 Pro v9.1.3 (English)
PDF Maker: Conversion Settings are set to default "Smallest File Size Web"
    Word: Microsoft Office Word 2007 (12.0.6504.5000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000)
Note: Using "Save As" and select "PDF or XPS" in Word 2007 works fine, the Chinese characters show up properly in the PDF file but I prefer using the PDF Maker from Acrobat to create my PDF files.

I have found that WORD 2007, particularly with docx files, does some strange things to PDF files that you produce. It seems to break a perfectly good graphic into parts and send the parts to the PDF (not usually a problem unless you zoom in). We have tested with AA8 and AA7 with WORD 2007 and gotten these results. WORD 2003 worked like expected. It is almost as though MS decided to put some hooks in OFFICE 2007 for Acrobat. Normally with Acrobat, the graphics come out as a single graphic as stored in the application.
Glad you got the character issue to work. I use a job.settings file that is distributed by a publisher to get an "optimized" form of product for posting. Of course, optimized is always in the eye of the beholder, but I have been happy with it.

  • Save as PDF from Word 2007 missing graphics

A similar question has been asked before, but it's still marked "unanswered" and I still don't know what's going on. All I really wanted to do today was update my resume...
Sometime during the last two months of 2014, I lost the ability to see graphics like text boxes and images when saving a Word 2007 document as a PDF. I've tried saving it from the "Save As..." option, I've tried saving it from the Acrobat tab, I've tried printing it to PDF - nothing works. If you can visualize this, on the first PDF, a blank space shows up in place of the text box, and on the other PDF, you'd never even know there had been an image inserted at the beginning of the line.
Does anyone know if this is a Word problem or an Adobe problem? Has an otherwise well-intentioned update (to either program) screwed this up? I'm using Windows 7 and the Firefox browser.

Are they really missing or there are place holders there? Have you gone to the preferences and turned on View Large Images? As an unrelated comment, do you really want images in a resume? Maybe if you are a graphic artist or such, but images are not common in most resumes I have seen and I would not expect such. However, that is really your choice, just wanted to comment.

  • Printing a PDF from Word 2007

Good Day, I have checked several forums and the help file, but I can't seem to get a straight answer on this issue.
Our office creates many documents in Microsoft Word 2007 that contain both typed text AND images.  For example, I have a document with a summary section and then a .jpg of an event from Facebook.  We usually Print the document using Adobe PDF and the resulting PDF is searchable with the Find tool.  The problem is that the images contain text and we want that to be searchable as well.  I found posts saying to take the PDF and Print it again as an image and then run the Recognize Text tool.  I have tried this and it does indeed work, although the resulting PDF is grainy looking (even at 600 dpi).
What I would like to know is if there is a way to get the images to be searchable during the conversion from Word to PDF. I could educate my co-workers on how to do this and save the trouble of having to touch each document more than once. Also, I do not like the graininess of the image nor the extra steps involved to convert each document.  It will require a lot more hands on maintenance than I have time for.  We are on Windows 7.
Any assistance or clues you can provide on this topic would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance, Paula C.

Any work to make the images searchable should be done BEFORE putting them in Word. It is far too late once the PDF is made because you will destroy the good work that Word did in preparing the PDF in the first place.
Sadly it's far from clear how you'd do that. About the only format you could use to hold OCRd images would be EPS, and I've never heard of "OCR to EPS" software.

  • Shapes, Smart Art not showing in PDF from Word 2007

    Hi,
I am having a strange problem. When I convert my Word 2007 document to PDF using Acrobat PDF, all the shapes and smart art that I created in Word 2007 is not appearing in the PDF.
However, when I am converting either Microsoft Powerpoint or Microsoft Excel 2007 to PDF, the shapes and smart art are coming properly.
Can anyone please help me. It is really really urgent for me.
    Regards,
    Ashish Agarwal

How are you converting your document?  Try another way.  You can convert it by going to the Acrobat ribbon, or by printing it to Adobe PDF (just like you would to a normal printer but select Adobe PDF) or from within Acrobat (File>Create PDF>From File).  If this doesn't fix it try changing the PDF settings used to create it, e.g. smallest file size, Press Quality etc.

Hi. Problem as described above. Has anyone encountered this before?

Sorry for the problem that you're seeing. Which software are you using to create the PDF? Acrobat + version? CreatePDF service? Something else?
With some more information, we can likely help you further.

  • "Fast Web View" not supported in Acrobat X plug-in for FireFox/Chrome

The Acrobat X plug-in for displaying PDFs in FireFox/Chrome does NOT support fast web view.   This means that PDFs don't display until after the entire file has been download.
For example, try viewing this document in either IE(Windows) or Safari(Mac):
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/pdf/PDFReference.pdf
Notice how it opens very quickly, and then you can scroll around and view all the content as the PDF content strreams in?  In Safari you can see the download progress like you used to be able to see in all versions of the acrobat plug-in.  Note also that in the IE version, although fast web view is working, you cannot see the download progress like you used to be able to... Thats an issue, but not nearly as bad as the real issue...
Now try clicking the same link in either FireFox or Chrome (note that in Chrome you need to be sure that Chrome's PDF viewer is turned off and the acrobat plug-in is enabled).  Note that the PDF is not displayed until the entire file is downloaded.
This feature is VITAL for viewing large documents online.  I'm astonished that this has not been reported by other users.
Adobe -- PLEASE be sure that this gets fixed in the next update to Reader X!!  I was shocked to see that it was not fixed in 10.1.

WHY would you want to disable this? Linearized "Fast Web View" enabled PDF are the right and proper type of document to be created.

Can anyone help with this - do I have to uninstall Reader and then reinstall?

I have had a trial version of Acrobat X1 Pro - I have decided not to buy at this stage - for some time it has been conflicting with opening PDF docs after "saving as" from word 2007 - I uninstalled Pro X1 and now when I "save as" PDF from word 2007 to PDF it will save the document as a PDF but will not open the document to display after publishing - I have to got to where the file has been saved to view the new PDF document - this is really annoying - do I have to delete adobe reader and reinstall it - adobe needs to look at this conflict with acrobat pro as I have even gone it to properties and tried to have adobe reader as the default PDF program - the main issue is that I cannot view the PDF after publishing it from word 2007

  • PDF fast web view option don't work like the specification  Acrobat Reader suggest...

I have an optimized/linear PDF file for support fast web viewing option.
My issue is about the plugin comportment. In the Adobe specification, when the plugin receive a large optimized PDF file, he suppose to be began to read and show the PDF file after the first page received from the web server.
In my case it's not worked properly. The plugin show me the PDF file after the download finish.
When I check the Acrobat Reader 8.1 internet settings, all fast web view options are checked properly.
If I look the PDF file properties the fast web view value is yes.
I don't know what is wrong in my setup.

  • Unable to enable "Fast Web View" in an existing PDF/A file.

I have a pre-existing PDF/A file that I'd like to optimize for web publishing (i.e. enable "Fast Web View").  I have done this kind of conversion in the past using Adobe Acrobat Professional 9.0 and X but whenever I attempt to do so for this particular file via Tools and/or by making the changes in Preferences and executing a "Save As" the Fast Web View is still set to "No".  We have attempted to make this change using Ghostscript but that too has proven unsuccessful.  The file is 2.6 GB and I have attached a screenshot of the properties of said PDF/A for reference.  Has anyone encountered this before and found a way to modify the file?  Thanks.

Tricky one. It might not be possible, since modifying to PDF/A might turn off optimization, while optimizing might turn off PDF/A... I think people have largely lost interest in fast web view since broadband is mostly so, well, broad.
