Faulty Batter or Computer?

I am having problems with my battery once again. About a year ago, my computer would only last about 20 minutes on battery power before dying, so I took it to the apple store and they replaced it right away. They said the battery was faulty and that a new one would fix my problems. Well, now this new battery is acting the same as the last one. Right now, after 48 cycles, the full charge capacity is at 2381 mAh and my computer barely lasts 30 to 45 minutes running on battery power. I went through all the steps that apple told me to when I installed the new battery. Is it possible this is an issue with my computer and not necessarily with the battery itself? I'm going to take it in to the apple store soon and see what they have to say.
Thanks,
Quinn
BTW, I bought my macbook pro when they first came out, just about 2 years ago. It's a 2.0 GHz with 1.5 gigs of ram running on Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Do return to the Apple Store - most likely, it's another bad battery. Some posters in this forum have reported going through four replacement batteries from Apple.
Hope this helps...

  • Batt. Charger/ Batt./computer faulty

    Hi all,
My batt. charger has no orange light when plugged to my 'puter (PB G4, 1.5) while running at low batt. notice, but will charge if I shutdown and wait. Sometimes when I switch on the 'puter while charging, the orange light goes off and sometimes, lights won't go off but charging does not happens and % indication on the bar does not increase. Tried the pram reset (removing batt., disconnecting a/c adaptor and holding start button for 10 secs., but no solution/change.
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4042
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 454
    Amperage (mA): -2092
    Voltage (mV): 10716
    Cycle Count: 261
Above info on my 'puter's power.
    Thanks a lot.

You may want to check the "AC Charger Information" below the battery specs you posted. Make sure it sees the adaptor as a 65W model, not a 45W. That will slow charging as a 45W cannot both charge and run the computer. I know-- the guy who gave me my PowerBook sent a 45W charger.
Shut down the computer and see if you can get more charge on the battery than shown on the last post. What worries me is the "voltage" reading. My 17" PBG4 currently shows 12296 mV (12.2V) with a "full" battery. See if that improves with a complete charge
I still have battery trouble with mine. An Apple guy says it probably has a bad cell within due to the original owner seldom using the computer on battery power. Non-use kills Li batteries.

  • De-activating old scrapped computer

I paid for my computer repair man to take away and clean out my old faulty Windows XP computer.  I now try to install my Elements 8 into my new Windows 7 computer but am being blocked as I am informed it is already running on 2 computers.  I have it installed on my laptop for when I'm away from home.  How can I deactivate it from my original scrapped computer?

You need to contact support directly for activation/deactivation and other installation issues. You should be able to get it fixed right away if an agent is available for on-line chat.

  • In Entourage 2008 - Contact's Personal tab faulty

Suddenly, without anything else going wrong with the software, the Birthday field in the Contact's Personal tab has decided not to show the year of birth and if I go in to edit it and put the year in, the whole field goes empty after pressing the tab key on the keyboard.  Then when I look at the Summary, it still shows the person's age, but not the birthday.
Why would this happen?  Is the software faulty, could my computer's battery be going flat?  Is it something to do with being in the year 2014?  Anyone else experience this?
I am reluctant to reinstall the sofware for fear of losing all my saved folders, emails etc.  I know how to save my addresses, but not my custom folders.  Hopefully someone can answer this before I have to go ahead and do this though.

  • My computer turns off randomly

When i am playing games like WoW or Civ 4 my computer shuts off. It shuts off after no more than a half hour of use. This has happened to me 4 times in a row tonight. I had the computer off all day. I turned it on this evening and after a half hour it just turns off. The computer is about 3 months old. I am very frustrated.

It doesn't matter how long you've been running the computer, the heat can build up fast. On my iMac, I can shut my computer down overnight, boot it up in the morning, and the temp on the CPU will be around 114 degrees F. However, if I start to do anything intensive like rendering video or playing a game full screen the temp reaches the point where the fans have to kick in high gear w/in about 5 minutes. So 30 minutes is plenty of time to get the heat built up. Besides, I think that the new C2D's are supposed to run cooler, so that means that the temp limit will be reached faster.
Also, like myhighway suggested, the RAM might be insufficient enough to do graphics-intensive tasks or other RAM utilizing tasks. When I got my iMac, it had 512 MB of RAM. That barely cut it for rendering video. Even with 512, it took over 2 hours to render just an hour of video. After that I got another 512 stick from Apple, and the rendering is real-time now. Also like myhighway suggested, the 3rd party RAM you put in there could be faulty, leaving your computer with just 512 MB of usefull RAM.
    Hope this helps

  • I can't sync music and get an error message when I plug in my iPod

I've had my iPod for a year or so, and mostly things have been fine. The battery-life was dying more quickly than usual, so I went to the Apple Store and got one of the salespeople to help me. They told me to Restore the iPod and see how it went from there. After a complete fiasco with that, I keep trying to plug in my iPod to update my library. However, when I plug it in, the iPod only flashes the charging button, and iTunes is unresponsive and sluggish for several minutes. Then a message pops up that says "The iPod 'iPod' cannot be synced. The required disc cannot be found."
I have repeatedly gotten this message and really don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated......

  • DOA PowerMac G5

    Hello,
I am hoping that there may be some tech savvy people here who can advise me. My PowerMac G5 2.5 duo processors recently started acting up. There were times that the power button would not function. Could not shut it down and sometimes couldn't start it up. Other times it worked. I took it into the Apple Store and they gave it a complete going over. Tried a new power button unit, which didn't solve the problem. Next they replaced the power supply which that didn't help. After a couple of weeks they decided the problem was either a bad logic board or one of the processors were faulty.
The computer is 3 1/2 years old. Fortunately I was able to back up everything I needed and purchased a new G5 MacPro. I would like to sell the old computer for parts only. I was wondering if I should try to disassemble some of the good parts like hard drive, memory etc. and sell them separately or should I just sell the whole unit as is?
    I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

    Hi DP,
Thank you for your reply. I have checked out Ebay and some folks have been selling the parts while others are selling the whole unit. I will probably piece meal a few things like memory and super drive and sell the rest for whatever I can get out of it. It's disappointing that a computer like the G5 becomes a pile of junk after only 3 1/2 year. My very first Mac from 1985 still fires up and runs!

  • Split x2 problem with USB ports not working

My computer is somewhat new and this problem has been happening since I first got it.  I couldn't find anything about this problem here or elsewhere online.
When I plug anything into either USB port (I've tried my phone and an external harddrive) the computer like sort of recognizes it on and off.  When I plug in my phone the computer beeps at random every several seconds and doesn't recognize it.  The external hard drive was sort of recognized but only on and off and I couldn't move things from it to my computer because it wouldn't stay connected long enough.  It's literally like every 2-3 seconds it recognizes the USB thing, changes it's mind and then recognizes it again, etc. forever.
I haven't had a chance to test the SD card slot or the HDMI port yet.
Sometimes the mouse freezes also, I'm not sure if this is the same problem (related to connection between the tablet and the keyboard parts) or if these are separate problems.  It seems to be happening less often and goes away if I wait for a moment.  Still annoying but the USB ports not functioning is a more urgent issue.
I need help, is there a way to fix this or is something faulty with my computer?

  • CS5 crashing on new image/opening image

Okay, so here's the deal: I've owned my MacBook Pro for less than 12 hours, and it's been a great computer that entire time. That's the same amount of time I've had CS5 Extended installed on my computer, and it was working fine until this evening.
Now, any time I try to create a new image or open an existing image, I get an error telling me that Photoshop has quit unexpectedly. Google is providing little help in regards to the matter.
I know it can't be something faulty with my computer as I've done nothing with it, and uninstalling/reinstalling CS5 itself proved no good. Am I just missing something considering I'm a new Mac owner? It's very frustrating.
I'm willing to post the data report I get when it crashes if it'd be helpful.

I know it can't be something faulty with my computer as I've done nothing with it,
Sadly, that part is not realistic.. they can just have problems on their own even straight out of the box, it is usually not the CPU, but the operating system and software still coming together.
Have you updated the o/s and applications with any patches etc? There can be a lot of them.
    Firmware updated?
You need to do those and then repair permissions and a restart.  (Some people advocate doing that twice)
If you have problems after that then reinstalling some apps may be required, there have been issues in years gone by with the installations of some software messing up another but I think that is very rare.
Check your font collection using Fontbook or a utility, and clear caches using Cocktail (or whatever the current best cleaning utility is).

  • Portege 3110ct has no sound after installing XP Pro

I'm a novice when it comes to laptops, so here is the problem: My 3110ct has no sound after installing XP Pro. Didn't have sound when I bought it with another operating system on, report says no sound device installed.
Does this mean I need to get a chip for the laptop or is it a driver I need & where can I find the part or the driver for this.
    Please help.

Usually if the sound driver was not installed you will get no sound but also a yellow exclamation mark should appear in the device manager.
If the sound card chip is damage I presume you will be not able to see the yellow exclamation belonging to the sound card in the device manager.
You bought this Portg as a second hand unit. Am I right?
So possibly the sound card is faulty.
The computer uses a ESS ES1978 (Maestro-2E) and ES1918 sound chip.
Check if you can find an XP sound driver in the internet.

  • New Graphics Card won't get past HP splash screen.

A customer bought in an Hp Pavilion P6755a, well out of warrenty with a failing graphics card. The customer does a lot of gaming so we sugested they repalce the3 graphics card, and get something a bit more powerfull at the sametime.  We settled on an Gigabyte GTX 750TI, as it has resonable power at a low price, but more importanly it doesnt require extra power.
Popped in the new card, but the computer won't get past the HP splash screen, can't enter the BOIS either.
Trouble shooting I have already tried
*Installed a differnt card (GTX 230) which worked fine
*Tried the GTX750Ti in another computer to check it wasn't faulty (The other computer was even older than this one by several years)
*Tried a more powerfull PSU  (it worked fine in a another computer with only a 300W PSU)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello @RileyNZL,
I understand that when you install the GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics card in your HP Pavilion p6755a Desktop PC it will not boot up. The reason for this is because your motherboard only supports PCI Express 1.0 and the graphics card is a PCI Express 3.0. Theoretically, the card should work, but there is a break in the support chain at around PCI Express version 2.1 where PCI Express 1.0 is no longer compatible. I suspect that your other computer does not have PCI Express 1.0.
I hope this helps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Frustrated because unable to burn music. (PL created, no burn icon)

I have created a playlist and inserted a CD-R disk to burn music onto. However, the burn icon in Itunes doesn't appear. I am unable to drag and drop the music onto the CD. The "Burn Playlist to Disk" option under file is grayed out.
When the playlist that I created is selected......still nothing. I have rebooted without any luck. What can I try next. Its beginning to seem like something is faulty with my computer?? I am running Leopard on a fairly new IMac.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can burn songs if your iTunes is authorized to play them. Did you check that?
You can only burn a limited number of copies of a particular combination of songs. (If I recall correctly, if you change the order it's still the same combination of songs. You have to actually change the set of songs.) I don't recall what happens when iTunes thinks you've burned all the copies you're allowed, but I don't think it's mysterious graying out.
