FCE 3.5 HD on an iBook 1.2GHz

I have FCE running great on my iMac G5.
I'd like to put it on my iBook for when I'm traveling, I don't expect it to work like a champ. But will it work ok until I get back home and get back on my iMac?
iBook 1.2GHz 1.25GB ram 80gig 5400RPM hard drive.
Thanks guys

I don't wish to be a presager of doom and gloom but I had better mention it before other people do:-
It is a breach of the license agreement to have FCE on more than one computer unless you have more than one genuine copy.
You must delete it from your iMac before installing it on your laptop otherwise you are breaking copyright law. Then when you return home you can delete it from your iBook and reinstall it on your iMac - simple!
However, you will have no cause to worry as I am sure you intended to do that all along!
Ian.

  • Unable to Install Leopard on G4 iBook 1.2Ghz

    I have a 15" G4 1.2Ghz iBook with 1.2MB of Ram. I have 13GB of available disk storage.
I get an error of "Unable to install 10.5 on this computer" when I run the Leopard installer. According to the specs I should have no problem installing it.
    Any ideas??
    TIA,
    Jack

    Hi Jack
"Apple makes me buy another version for each machine??"
Apple don't 'make' you buy anything, as do Microsoft or anyone else for that matter. If you want Leopard functionality on an older mac model that meets the minimum qualifying specification that's up to you. For that you are going to have to buy the Universal Leopard Installer. This was true for 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4.
As for Steve Job's Ferrari requirements (which could be seen as speculation and therefore not allowed by the rules of these forums to which you've agreed) that's neither here nor there. You can't with a good conscience blame him or Apople for your lack of understanding? As Kiraly points out its all there in the EULA.

  • Ibook 1.2Ghz suddenly died - help please.

The machine is 18 months old, has a new battery and i've never had any problems with it. While using it this morning the machine just died. It restarted again with no ill effects, bar the clock resetting. However, thirty minutes later the same thing happened. This time, grey vertical lines preceded the shutdown.
Now, approximately one in three times the machine will start up normally - only to shut down after one or two minutes. All files and folders appear present and correct during this time. The rest of the time, the fans spin up to full speed and nothing else happens.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Padraig,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Was the menu bar blinking? Have you deleted anything recently, maybe a font/language? You may want to try starting up in Safe Mode (Knowledge Base Document #107393 on How to Startup In Safe Mode). Do you have another user account? If so try logging into that one and see if you run into the same problem. Do you have the original install disc that came with your computer? Have you tried booting from it? You may want to look at..

Checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk (Disk Utility 10.5)
With Disk Utility you can also verify and repair the disk. Do you have an external monitor that you could hook you iBook up to? You may also want to look at Knowledge Base Document #300552 on My computer won't turn on (Display troubleshooting.

  • Driving a TV from the iBook

Was at a friends recently and discovered they have no DVD player (lets not go down that black hole !) [G4 iBook 1.2GHz]
But said I have my iBook so lets just play my DVD through your TV. Easier said than done !
    1. I tried using the small jack socket on the side and driving a SCART input on the TV via small jack to 3 x phono cable. Similar to Apple AV cable. Cable worked fine for my miniDV camera to TV. Get low volume soundtrack but nothing else.
    2. Tried Apple mini-VGA to s-video adaptor and then s-video cable to back of SCART plug which takes s-video input. Get b/w video but no sound.
    3. Combined above with (2) plus connected one of the phono cables from (1) [yellow i think] so now get v low volume sound and b/w video of good quality.
I had thought that either 1 or 2 would work. Neither did. I have a nasty solution and no idea where i am going wrong. Can anyone help ?
I have seen this Apple ref doc on subject number 88396.

    1. I tried using the small jack socket on the side and driving a SCART input on the TV via small jack to 3 x phono cable. Similar to Apple AV cable. Cable worked fine for my miniDV camera to TV. Get low volume soundtrack but nothing else.
The headphone port on the iBook G4 is just that: A headphone port. It carries no video information at all, only audio. It seems to me that you'll need to get a different audio adapter cable.
    2. Tried Apple mini-VGA to s-video adaptor and then s-video cable to back of SCART plug which takes s-video input. Get b/w video but no sound.
The video adapter is video only. There is NO sound being transmitted. As above in #1, you would have to add a headphone to RCA "Y" type audio cable to go from your headphone port to the Red & White RCA plugs in your TV to get the sound.
A Black & White image makes me think you have the wrong video format chosen in the Displays System Preferences. Is your TV PAL or SECAM? In the Display System Preferences, the video display may be set to "NTSC" which is for North America.

  • Should I repair an Ibook logic board

I can have a 12 inch ibook 1.2ghz if I pay to repair it. It was just 14 months old, had been treated with great respect, when the logic board failed. Needless to say its owner had not purchased any extended warranty. Its owner purchased a new macbook and put the ibook in a drawer because he decided it was not worth the repair. I would use this ibook to replace my old Powerbook 3400c that died finally. I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail. My question is whether it is worth replacing this ibook logic board? Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards, so that subsequent failure is a hit or miss thing? Or does their failure result from other factors so that an ibook that has one logic board fail may have an underlying cause that will lead to subsequent failures? Is this computer worth saving?

I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail.Although there have been some failures the absolute majority of iBook G4 users have not had any type of logic board failure.
Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards...
    No
    Is this computer worth saving?
You will need to look at the cost of replacing the logic board versus buying a new/refurbished iBook G4 or new MacBook.

  • IBook doesn't boot

My iBook (1.2Ghz, late 2004) doesn't boot anymore since yesterday. I treid to reset the battery (by using it until empty, and recharging it) but when my iBook shut dow (when the battery was empty) it didn't boot anymore.
    I tried:
    -to zap the PRAM (optioncommand+PR)
-to do the hardware test (while holding C)
    -to enter open-firmware (optioncommand+OF)
    -resettig PMU
    neither of these suceeded.
I also don't hear the startup chime.
Is there anything else I can do to try and boot it?
Before this it booted without problems, I don't understand why I can't even get in the open firmware.
alltough my iBook is out of warranty, I suspect this to be a fabrication fault, will I have to pay if I let it repair? (I was planning to buy another MacBook Pro, don't know if I can trust apple products enough to buy them again. This isn't my first problem, I had one of the bad batteries where apple started a exchange program for)

The indicator LED's at the bottom of the battery say it has, and the illuminated ring of the adapter is also lit green.

  • Ichat with ibook

I am posting this here just in case my issue is an ibook issue. I am getting an isight camera for Christmas. I opened ichat for the first time. It takes me to the screen to set up a new account. That's as far as I get. If I click on anything my cursor turns into a spinning beach ball and I wait forever. Sometimes it stops spinning and let's me click on something else but then the beach ball comes back forever again. I eventually have to force quit and when I do it states: ichat (not responding). What am I doing wrong? I can't even setup an account. I am using ichat v. 3.0 on my ibook 1.2ghz with 512 ram using Tiger 10.4.3

What did you do to fix it? In case someone else does a search for the same kind of problem?

  • Old iBook Combo drive into BlackBook 2.0

I've got a dead 12" iBook 1.2GHz (with a combo drive) and a BlackBook Core Duo 2.0GHz (with a drive that doesn't want to accept disks...)
I'm sure the BlackBook drive is bad (ie.- dirty/non repairable) and am wondering if it would be easier to just swap out the two.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Will the iBook drive work in my BlackBook?
    Thanks in advance,
    Double_A

No, the iBook drive is 12.7mm high and the MacBook takes a 9.5mm high drive. Check out the specs at OWC. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/

  • Airport Extreme works in my ibook, not my powermac g5????

Ok, I have a question about setting up an airport card in my g5 powermac. In my house, I can use my ibook and connect wirelessly to my neighbors network with full strength and no problems. Perfect. Now, when I put that same card in my G5, I can see the airport icon at the top of the screen but it isn't finding any networks. I briefly ran through the setup for the card on the g5 but maybe missed something in there. I just dont understand why there is any setup involved anyway, I throw it in my ibook and I'm surfing the net immediately. I install it in the G5 and I get absolutely no signal. Anything I'm doing wrong?

A couple of things to consider off the top of my head:
-is the PowerMac close enough to your neighbors router
-is the card installed correctly, antenna maybe?
-does the neighbor have mac address filtering to allow ibook but not PowerMac
Try rebooting after the card is installed.
Also, found this on the Airport Extreme page:
This AirPort Extreme Card is not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers introduced in October 2005. To add an AirPort Extreme card to one of these systems, please contact an Apple Retail Store or other Authorized Apple Service Provider.

  • Hp laserjet 5550n forgets jobs, can only print one copy of a doc at a time

    We're using a Laserjet 5550n in a small office running Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.6.
We're encountering countless problems when trying to print, and I'm pretty sure I've ruled out the computer setup as the culprit (reset printing system, emptied CUPS caches, repaired permissions, used 'printer setup repair', etc ).
Whenever I try to print multiple copies of the same page it says
*Unable to store job at printer
*Insufficient disk space for this job'
However, storing jobs is switched off anyway!
Another huge problem is that the printer simply 'forgets' large printing jobs. CUPS (at http://127.0.0.1:631) says "printer processing, "Ready to print."", and then just goes back to 'idle'.
When you expect the printed pages to come out nothing happens, and the printer hasn't even started blinking.
We've had this printer for 16 months now, and the problems started just when the warranty had run out.
The 5550n has no additional memory than what it came with
DIMM Slot : 128 MB DDR
    DIMM Slot 2: Empty
    CARD SLOT 1: 32 MB F/W FLASH
I've tried upgrading the firmware to the latest version (20060403 07.009.0), to no avail.
Is there a more detailed log somewhere that I could try looking at to figure out what's going on? The printer web interface Event Log is useless without more detailed explanation.
The printer doesn't give any error messages (though at some point in the past it did say things like "card slot not initalized" or "49.xxxx PRINTER ERROR". I then reinitialised the memory I think ( the 49.xxx error disappeared after that).
I read somewhere about bad RAM or corrupted flash memory. Is there a way to find out if that's the cause?
    Many thanks for any ideas.

When I watch video, my computer goes to sleep after the time I have alloted in my power management settings. This does not happen in VLC or Mplayer. Hi, I can help a bit...
cmd+F will put the movie into fullscreen. If I leave my quicktime out of fullscreen mode, the screen saver will come on, but fullscreen fixes this.
If you're watching a low quality movie, you can open up Preferences (not the one that says, "Quicktime Preferences," press cmd+,) click the "Fullscreen" tab and change to desired size.
If all else fails, you can turn off sleeping entirely, or tape down a keyboard button or something
    hope this helped

  • How do you set up the passkey between the Mac & Palm?

    Hi all,
    I need help with a couple of things relating to bluetooth and Mac;
    a) when I try to HotSync the Palm TX and iBook(OS 10.3.9) using BT, I get an error message saying "can't initiate Hotsync because port is in use by another application'.
    b) how do you set up the passkey between the Mac & Palm? I can't work out how to input anything on the Palm at the step where it asks for the passkey.
    thanks
    iBook 1.2GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Palm has this to say about the issue:
'Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application.'
This error can occur on the Palm™ Zire™ 72 handheld after setting up a Bluetooth® HotSync® connection. When you configure the Bluetooth application on the handheld for synchronization (or when you set up a Bluetooth connection in the Connections preference screen), the HotSync button in the Writing Area may try to launch a Bluetooth connection, regardless of the connection selected in the HotSync application on your handheld. The HotSync icon in the Writing Area will always try to connect using whatever method was last used. When you set up Bluetooth HotSync, it used Bluetooth, and now tapping the icon in the Writing Area will result in a Bluetooth connection.
The issue arises if you launch the HotSync application on your handheld, and select the "Cradle/Cable" option from the pulldown menu, and then tap on the HotSync icon in the Writing Area. Your handheld will still try to perform a Bluetooth HotSync operation, because that was the method last used. You will see an error message, and won't be able to synchronize.
Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application.
    Why does this happen?
Because your handheld was set up for Bluetooth, tapping the HotSync icon in the Writing Area should launch a Bluetooth HotSync. But if you select a different method in the HotSync application, your handheld will try to connect using that method as well. The HotSync application is unsure which method to use, and you will see the error message.
    What should I do?
If you see this error, here's how to correct the issue:
    1. Launch the HotSync application on your handheld.
    2. In the pulldown menu at the center of the screen, choose the connection method by which you wish to synchronize.
    3. Then, instead of tapping the HotSync icon in the Writing Area, tap the large onscreen HotSync icon in the middle of the HotSync application screen.
    4. Do this every time you wish to synchronize using Cable/Cradle.
    5. Whenever you want to synchronize using Bluetooth, exit the HotSync application and tap the HotSync icon in the Writing Area.
    6. This will allow you to keep multiple connection methods for synchronization, and the flexibility of alternating between them.

  • Query logic board prob - errors on installing Tiger

    Hello
I'm trying to fix a friends G4 iBook 1.2GHz and have apparently made it worse.
It was running on 10.3.9 and warning of the HD being full so I suggested installing more RAM and updating to 10.4.8
I put in 512 mb of RAM and tried installing Tiger (from 10.4.6 Apple install disk - a generic one - not a specific to iBook version) and whatever I try it starts the instal and then stops "there were errors installing, please restart and try again"
I pulled the extra RAM out thinking that may be the cause but got same error. I tried starting the iBook in target disk mode and installing Tiger from my old G4 PowerMac. Also tried zero'ing all data on the iBook. Everything I do gets the same message. I think the message is exactly as I have typed above - there's no error code or specific reason for failure to install. Needless to say, it wont boot from the failed instal version - it just gets a black screen.
As I understand it was generally working before I did all this. It had been dropped a year ago and was reparied by Apple - new case and hinges. The battery now doesn't fit very well but it does always power up fine so I'm not assuming that is to blame for anything.
I think that gives all the necessary info. My guess is there may be a fault on the logic board. Another guess could be to do with the instal disk but it has worked fine on my G4 Powermac. Also, I have not run the Apple Hardware tester. I've had one in the past but cannot currently find it.
If you have any suggestions, I'd be very grateful to hear them. Many thanks

    Hi RichT353
I my opinion you fell at the first hurdle. An overfull hard drive can cause all sorts of erratic behavior.
Instead of adding RAM, the remedy would have been a larger Hard disk.
Nevermind; you must try to restart it in a functioning Operating System, - if that's panther, that is OK, and then make some space on the disk, by dealing with excesive music, file, photos, videos, and other such personal documents.
Boot from the Installer CD, holding down the C key and then after selecting the language, go up to the top menu bar, to run Disk Utility and selecting the Hard disk, choose
    Repair Disk.
    Then Repair Permissions.
Exit disk utility, cancel the installation and restart normally.
Once you have things back on an even keel, then think about upgrading the OS to Tiger.
Of course adding the extra RAM will not hurt.
    good luck
    regards roam
