FCP 4.5 DV to DSR-11 to Analog Outs to TV?

I got a DSR-11 recently and can't get this to happen. I want my playback from FCP (DV) to go through firewire to the DSR-11, then to the DSR-11's 3 RCA analog outputs (1 video, 2 audio L & R) and playback on my TV, which I hope to use as an NTSC monitor for now. I can't get this to work.
I connected the analog outs of the DSR-11 to the inputs on the TV and was able in that way to select the various settings in the DSR-11 menus.
I also captured from a miniDV tape in the DSR-11 to FCP 4.5 successfully.
I've tried new RCA and firewire cables. But, playback from FCP still gives me nothing on the TV. What else should I do?

In FCP, make sure View->External Video is set to "All Frames." You may also want to do the "Refresh AV Devices" thing. Oh ... and make sure that you have the palyhead on a clip instead of a slug or Timeline gap (which will show as black).
I don't have a DSR-11, but on my DSR-20s, there's a menu setting for EE mode that has to be turned on for the Firewire signal to be passed on to the analog outputs.
Since you're seeing the VTR's menu on the TV monitor, you can assume the monitor is set to the porper input.

  • FCP 7.0.2 and DSR-11...are they together alright?

My FCP does not able to recognize DSR-11. I think that it was working until today. I even change firewire cable and still not work. I test DSR-11 with my other computer that has FCP 6.0.6. Any idea?

The newer MacPros lack FW400. Mine doesn't...I have that option. I guess that's why it still works? I've heard sketchy things about FW400-FW800 converters and capturing via firewire.

  • FCP I-Link problem with DSR-1500A

FCP 6.01, G5 and OSX will not work with Sony DSR-1500A. System Profiler recognizes that something is plugged in, the color wheel spins for a while then I get a warning that the device can not be recognized. The I-Link indicator on the DRS-1500A never stops blinking. I have used two different DSR-1500A's and Two different FCP systems. The DSR-1500A works fine when I connect the DSR-11 as an I-Link source.

    Thank you for your input.
It seems that the series in which the device come up is important.
I shut the DSR-1500A and my laptop down.
    Installed the firewire cable.
    Powered up the DSR-1500A
    Powered up my MacBook Pro
Started Systems Profiler which reported the deck 1503 interface card not a DSR-1500A deck.
I link light continued to blink.
I played a tape in the 1500A and got A/V into my MacBook Pro.
Tried the same process on my second DSR-1500A and still got the error message that the device could not be listed. Max bus speed 800 Mb/s
Tried the same process with my G5 and got the same error message.
I think I have one bad 1503 board on one of my DSR-15000A's and I think that the Mac's have a problem identifying and linking to the DSR-1500A.
So My problem is still unsolved.
Anyone else out there interfacing a SR-1500A with their FCP?

  • FCP 7's new tabs, anyone figure that one out yet?

Hi, I just finished my first job in FCP Studio 3 after upgrading last week, and wow, the upgrade is fantastic. I just had a couple of questions:
    1. The new tabs are great but for the life of me I can't figure out how to change the color. Its on the what's new page, so there must be a way. Also, the tabs do not retain their order on the Canvas or in the timeline after FCP is shut down and restarted. They always come back in alpha order. I don't remember 6.06 behaving that way, and it is annoying. So I just named the sequences in alpha order, but heck if I want to do that all the time!
    2. Performance hit with the upgrade; when I take a set of sequences and place them in a master sequence, whenever I try and move around the timeline in the master sequence, FCP beachballs like crazy. Individual sequence work is as fast as lighting, and I did not notice this in FCP 6.o6. Perhaps there is a default turned on or off that I don't know about...any ideas? Well, thx!!!

As far as the Tab colors:
Right or Control click your sequence(s) icon in the FCP Browser ... scroll down to Label, and set an attribute. The Sequence tabs in the Timeline window and the Canvas will pick up the set color.

  • Compatibility: OS X 10.4.6 and FCP 3

I use FCP 3 on a Powerbook G4. My primary external video device is a Sony DV CAM DSR-20. Until recently, I was running OS X 10.3 and the setup was bulletproof. Days ago, I installed OS X 10.4.6 and immediately thereafter FCP would not recognize the DSR-20. For purposes of troubleshooting, I temporarily replaced the DSR-20 with my Sony PD-150. Still nothing. Minutes ago, I upgraded my system software from 10.6 to 10.7. FPC still reconizes neither the DSR-20 nor the PD-150. Has anyone had similar experiences?

    The real problem, David, and for that matter everyone else, is;
Many of us are very happy with what we have, whether it be v.3, 4, 4.5. HD or ??? because we are busily cranking out sausage through the grinder every day. And the customers like the meat, filler and spices we use just fine. Nevermind they may have all the taste of Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, it's their check we cash at the end of the day.
But every few hours this little white box pops up in front of everything we are doing saying, "upgrade now to Quickitime this, Tiger that. Critical to do this security update"... etc.
So, because we have no way to disable this irritating load of insider Spam or discern if it's yet another sales pitch, we just knuckle under and press O.K. And invariably 999-megabytes later our system simply crashes. Final Cut Pro crashes, then everything stops working, including the sausage maker.
Yeah Yeah, we all know time marches on. Progress is inevitable. Programs get upgraded. We also know that planned obsolesence is the cornerstone of American industry. If a Chevy truck craters at 100 thousand miles instead of 150 thousand, GM can wrestle another 3 years in its death match with Honda. That doesn't alter the fact that my old truck gets better gas mileage than what they're offering now and the transmission doesn't need adjusting every 40 thousand miles like the new one does. But OH, isn't the color of the new leather lovely?
I guess the short answer is, people get tired of seeing their products quit and even more tired of the manufacturer or his shills saying, you wouldn't be having any trouble if you'd buy the new one.

  • FCP 5 freezes upon break of timecode

Wondering if anyone has had a similiar experience with FCP 5 freezing (spinning beach ball of death) after initiating a log and capture - once the timecode breaks (and remains broken) having the application freeze, and the only way out is to perform a force quit?
Stopping the camera/disconnecting it from the computer/turning it off keeps the machine frozen, and pressing the escape key doesn't work either. My PB has just recently been formatted, with a fresh install of everything.
Your help would be much appreciated - I don't want to have to capture in iMovie forever! (This has been my workaround until now.)

Hi Folks, I am new to your discussion group and would like to get back to the original topic if that's O.K. I am new to FCP and have just recently wanted to check it out. I started with v.5 and have been having the same problems several of the others have had. First of all I know what a deck is and have been editing for years with the Media100 system. As soon as I tried to digitize with FCP5 the software stops a few seconds into the clip ( which is not at the very beginning of the tape) and says it has detected a timecode break. I escaped the capture and went frame by frame. There are no timecode breaks. I am not talking about a camera stop which would cause a break, I am talking about the middle of a scene. I checked the preferences and told it to "make a new clip" It is supposed to go to the break and create a new clip and go on. It did not do this. These are clips where I set the In's and Out points. I
decided to tell it to continue and see if it would get past the break. In the pre-roll it suddenly found a new timecode break and stopped again. It never did get past the timecode break. It did not save any of the clips it was supposed to keep. I aborted the capture when it wanted me to O.K.the 33rd clip and I was still on the same 1 minute of video. I assume since the capture was eventually aborted this was the reason it did not keep any of the clips. The software never stopped the same place more than twice. It seemed to be telling me I had a roving timecode break. I checked the tape, there are no breaks.
I spent 2 days trying to get it to digitize properly. I trashed all 4 preferences in the preference file of the user pane at least twice. I turned off the "stop at drop frame" option. I safe booted the machine and repaired permissions. I went back to the user pane and told it to "Warn me after capture". I played with all those settings with no joy. After changing the setting to warn me after capture I digitiized 3 clips sucessfully and the forth clip and beyond had timecode breaks again. Again I checked the tape frame by frame and there are no breaks. I tried to capture 1 clip at a time, without success and Logged and Captured also without success. Actually there were a couple clips that had no breaks but the software completely ignored the Out Point I had set and ran 5 minutes over before I aborted it. As a further test I went back to Media100 and the capture went off without a hitch. On the clips that were successful the audio sounds like crap. The audio drop outs were enormous. Mixdown helped only marginaly.
My equipment startes with a Sony DSR-80 DVCam deck. The signal is routed thru a matrix switcher to an AJA IO LA box and into my G5 duel processor thru firewire. I am capturing to a G-Raid not my hard drive.
I don't know what else to try. I have posted on the Boston User Group and the LA User Group. No one seems to have a solution other than doing a Capture Now with the setting of Uncontrollable Device selected. This is not the way this software is supposed to work. Is there a bug in the FCP5? There are a lot of people having this same issue after they upgraded to V.5. I did not have an earlier version and started off with v.5 I would appreciate any thoughts. Is there anything I missed trying? Sorry about the book. Its been along week of trial and error.

  • FCP wont open motion projects on tileline anymore

I have been using the FCP suite by creating motion projects and imoporting the project file onto my fcp timeline, I really like doing this it cuts out allot of wasted time. However I just installed the new itunes and the new quicktime update and suddenly whe i try to change a motion project in fcp via "open in editor" teh OS crashes. says I need to restart...AHHHH.
    Any ideas?
    I use FCP 5.0.4 and Motion 2.0.1

Ouch. The OS crashes? Kernel panic? Also read what TheXlab has to say about kernel panics.
It sounds like the QuickTime update might be the source of your problems. I don't know if FCP 5.0.4 and Motion 2.0.1 are friends with QuickTime 7.1.3.
I would take advantage of the $99 crosscrade offer while it's still there

  • Can you batch export in FCP X, can you batch export in FCP X

I work for a business and am constantly working on projects that have multiple, separate projects within the same project. because of this I do all my editing during my business day and then when I leave for the day, I used to batch export the projects and the next morning I would come into work and be able to move onto the next thing. so far in FCP X I have not been able to find out how to do that. I know that in FCP 7 you could do it obviously, but I'm wondering...does FCP X have that same capability because I can't seem to find it and I don't really have the time to waste by exporting during the day.
    Thanks for your help,
    Scotty

    Hey Scotty,
Andynick is correct about the batch export workaround.  The way I do it is this:
    1.     Go to the Project Library
    2.     Select the first project you want to export
    3.     Go to file>Send to Compressor. (I set a shortcut -Sift>Option>C from preferences, If you need help with that let me know.
    4.     Repeat this process for each project
    5.     Go to Compressor (it will already be open)
    6.     Now here's where it gets kind of anoying, You need to choose which batch you want to make your main one. Pull off the tab on top and drag that project into your prefered batch, then close the old tab.  Now you'll have two projects in your chosen batch.
    7.     repeat that process for the rest of the batches Compressor created.  When you're done you should only have one batch open with all of your projects in it.
    8.     Submit the batch and let Compressor do it's thang.
    Things to note:
When you send a project to compressor, it will automatically choose your default settings and location.  If you want them to be different you'll have to do it mannually or change your defaults before you begin this process.
FUN right! Hopefully Apple will fix this so you can at least select multiple projects in the Project Library to make it a bit easier.
If anyone has a better workflow I am all ears!

  • IMovie capture quality better than anything FCP can offer for consumer DV?

As a newbie to FCP, I have not found Capture, sequence, and export settings that is equal to or better than what iMovie 08 can create. Prior to this, I've been using iMovie 08 which is extremely user friendly. Just plug in the fire wire connections and it auto detects only one setting for DV. I am not sure what format it captures in but it does a good job. When I export out of iMovie 08 I use "using Quicktime" and choose the Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC method. The result is a decent, non-interlaced looking .mov file.
The first time I tried to capture with FCP I chose the easy setup, where I would capture in the NTSC DV, sequence would be NTSC DV and export using the current settings in quicktime. The result was an interlaced and lowered quality vid.
I have also tried the following combinations with no success with quality comparisons w/ iMovie 08:
capt: NTSC dv, seq: NTSC DV, progressive exp: Uncompressed 8-bit
capt: Uncompressed 8-bit, seq: Uncompressed 8-Bit exp: Uncompressed 8-bit
This last one came close, but still iMovie 08 was better.
My assumption is that FCP would contain the settings to duplicate or even out perform iMovie's export quality for consumer video dv. I viewed iMovie as little brother and FCP as big brother. Shouldn't FCP produce equal to or better quality than iMovie 08? And what are the settings for this?
    Thanks

Thank you for clearing up my confusion. How is my export from iMovie 08, using "Uncompressed 8-bit" coming out progressive (I see no interlaced, odd/even scan lines)? Is this export dropping lines/information? If so, uncompressed is not an appropriate name for the export.
I understand what you are saying about "getting quality back" on export. My initial question was comparing the quality of an iMovie 08 export vs. FCP export and having the problem of a lowered output from the FCP export.
If anyone has the time, would they try a short experiment:
    1. From your DV source, camera or deck connect to your computer
Capture a short clip via iMovie 08 a short clip in standard 4:3.
Export using Quicktime, Uncompressed 8-bit setting
    2. From your DV source, camera or deck, connect to your computer.
Capture the same short clip to FCP using Easy set up for NTSC DV. Export with current settings.
    3. Compare the two.

  • Teranex Mini, the economical choice in front of FCP?

My friend, the search function, did not have anything bad to say about Teranex. One poster said it was the best. In search of more information, I have gone to a review in Videography, suggested by Teranex. The reviewer has consulted for Teranex. Despite these cautions I raise the proposition that the Teranex Mini could save me money. What do you think?
I have legacy VHS material, various stills including half-toned scanned stuff, and three cheap consumer camcorders, doing card, DVD and DV tape. I am reluctant to upgrade to an HD camera given their myriad of formats, the rapid change and their cost. It seems that the Teranex Mini might let me hang in with my "junk" until Red arrives and settles down to save the day. The top cost I have seen is $7,000 for a Mini ($3,000 minimum price). Patrick guessed he might spend $7,000 for his fully-featured Mac Pro, so I guess $7,000 for a Teranex Mini is not out of the ball park. I was yearning for a Mac Pro + but now it seems more economical to yearn for a Teranex Mini.
You might want to look at the full review, but I have included a couple of excerpts. I did not include the part about a time lag problem, but they say that FCP will let you offset and get Teranex in sync with FCP.
    The review excerpts follow:
"For the foreseeable future, video professionals
are going to live in a multiformat
    and multi-standard world.
Although you may be upgrading to
high definition, it’s unlikely that you
will be working with HD footage exclusively.
Most producers will have a continuing
    need to incorporate legacy
    standard-definition footage from past
    productions or stock image libraries.
    For this reason, high-quality format
    conversion equipment is an essential
    ingredient at facilities."
    and
    "most converters offer
little to improve the image or even to
keep it intact during scaling. If you are
    supplying HD programming that
includes a large amount of upconverted
SD material, a dedicated format converter
    could mean the difference
between a program that passes a QC
    check and one that doesn’t."

    Shane,
The message I got from your post may not be the one you intended, but it is a good message and I again thank you.
You wrote, "Or rent cameras and avoid buying like most productions do."
Being as I am trying to find a way to live with my junk cameras until RED or equivalent is available and stable, I translated your message as:
"Or rent Teranex Mini and avoid buying like most productions do."
The net says I can rent it for $275 per day plus insurance and shipping.
I will not need it for a while, so that leaves me time to learn how to use it and develop a good work flow to FCP, so that I can get Teranex in and out quickly.
Regarding other points you made, I will probably have VHS only this one time and I think I can frame it to the audience as real, live, authentic action footage from 13 years ago, so that they will put up with it.
As to the footage from my DV consumer cameras, it will not be perfect but Teranex says it will pass the quality check. The rental will reveal whether that is true.
And, about RED, if Graeme Nattress is on the development team, and I think he is, then I am willing to bet on RED. I do not think he would associate himself with anything that will not be a success. Of course, it might slip schedule a teeney, but I trying to prepare to wait it out happily with Teranex.
Again, I appreciate your posting last night.

  • FCP Studio 2 on Leopard

I've seen this question discussed some on this board, but the conversation sometimes gets hijacked into other areas. So here's the question:
I run FCS2 on a G5 PowerMac Quad (yeah, a dinosaur...). For reasons that have nothing to do with Final Cut, I'm thinking of switching from Tiger to Leopard -- there are just a number of apps coming out now that only run on 10.5, and a couple of the features of the OS seem useful. I am in the middle of a long doc HDV project with lots of media, etc. OK, here comes the question: Is there any reason I should bite the bullet and stick with Tiger? How likely is it that Leopard will mess me up somehow with FCS2?
    Thank you.

Oh, well, I'll throw in the contrarians voice.
Sure, go ahead and upgrade. But ONLY if you do it this way ...
    1. purchase a new hard drive for the computer, install it and format properly.
    2. on the new hard drive, install the new OSX version, FCP, as well as your other apps.
    3. make a duplicate of the project file and put it on the new machine.
    4. boot from the new system, launch FCP and open your copied FCP project.
    5. run through all sequences, video outs etc. verify slo-motion works, clip i/o points are correct etc.
    6. test capturing new media
    7. test output to tape, compressor, dvd, etc
If all this works without a hitch, continue on with the new system.
If all this works with problems, change your boot disk back to the prior system and pick up where you stopped before wandering into the brave new world.

  • Captured Clip in Quicktime Pro turns weird in FCP

    Hi Guys-
Just thought I'd use QT Pro to capture a 'capture now' style, long form project so I wouldn't tie up FCP. Maybe it's just me, but not only does the encoding not look as good, but I have problems playing the clip in FCP. Whether or not the clip really is out of sync, the point at which you stop it is not the frame that appears. The audio only plays while scrubbing and when the clip is stopped, the clip magically changes contrast a bit until it's played again. Sounds corrupt to me. I am not nor ever have had a problem capturing directly inside FCP. Just wondered why its companion program is so fouled up. Thanks.

I can't understand why this is happening. can anyone explain what I am doing wrong.
Does the file contain multiple video/video associated data tracks?

  • Export quits FCP

I'm new to Motion. I want to export a clip from FCP to Motion but it causes FCP to quit. It's a person in from of of a green screen and I want them to burst into flames. What do I need to do? Aren't the two supposed to work together?

    Hi Hal, hope your well.
Your right! The two should just work together. The usual process for sending a file from FCP to Motion is to Ctrl or Right click the file > Send To > Motion Project.
If its not working it could be worth updating your computer using Software Update. If everything is up to date, a permissions repair and restart is all i can recommend at the moment.
If thats not working, you could export the scene from FCP to Motion by setting your Canvas in and out points, then File > Export > QuickTime Movie. Just import that into Motion and you should be able to start work straight away.
Hope this helps a little, some of the other guys will be able to go more in depth regarding trouble shooting the exact problem so keep checking back.
    Jim.
