FCP HD freezes or unexpectedly quits
i edit a lot of video of road trips and things that i do with my friends and recently my final cut just started freezing all the time. I noticed that it's doing this a lot when i move something on the timeline and quickly press the spacebar to play it. my mouse arrow turns into a spinning rainbow thing and i have to force quit final cut. what's wrong with this thing???? help me out!!!
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
3) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

Slow, Freezing up, Unexpectedly quitting...multiple problems
I am having terrible issues with PPro CS5.5.
Fisrt off when making the switch from CS5 to 5.5 I noticed right away it was much slower...I then started encountering my projects to quit unexpectedly, freezes up, can't load certain media or freezes up while opening a project. Rendering times are much slower even on a simple internal drive edit.
For this particular project I have been having no success with: I have my entire project on a external with firewire 800. I moved my entire project onto the internal drive and no issues were solved. I then decided to try and open the same project from the hard drive on another iMac running CS5. It loaded very quickly no issues.
This particular project has over 50gigs of footage with a couple sequences and a couple After Effects projects using Dynamic Link.
I am editing 1080 DSLR 24fps footage in a 1080 timeline.
I've never had issues like this in CS5. I can even remember about a year ago how my friend was able to edit off two USB self powered externals on a 5 year old Macbook Pro playing back heavily color corrected footage without rendering easily.
Specs of the two iMacs:
Running CS5.5 on a 2.5 Quad-core i5 with 4GB memory with the latest version of Lion.
Running CS5 with a single 3.2 i3 with 4GB memory with the latest Snow Leopard.
I know they are not crazy fast machines but I have never experienced PPro like this until I upgraded to CS5.5
Is it just CS5.5? or maybe 5.5 in conjunction with Lion?
I've had to switch back to FCP7...really Adobe?
Please help any solution much appreciated.terrible issues with PPro CS5.5.

Somehow I knew I'd find the second sentence as soon as I'd read the first.
This whole post will likely end up deleted, but you still might see it before it goes away, so here it goes...
The move from FCP to PP was a good one, but it's only half way there. Finish the move and build yourself a new suitable Windows 7 machine. Install everything yourself from scratch. You're issues are almost certain to vanish. -
Final cut pro fcp 6.0.6 unexpected quit using OS 10.6.8
Just upgraded to OS 10.6.8 and installed MacKeeper (big mistake) and FCP 6.0.8 quits during start up? Trashed MacKeeper and re-installed everything but Final Cut Pro still quits during start up? Everything else seems fine - any sugegstions about what is hapenning here?
You should probably trash your FCP preferences. This application will make it easy:

FCP 4.0 "Unexpectedly quitting" after having computer fixed??
I just got comp back after having it fixed (kept freezing then wouldn't restart after tiger upgrade). They ran diagnostics and blah, blab, blah - and i just got it back. Now I can't start fcp at all. I keep getting a "fcp unexpectedly quit" msg, it offers to give a report which is quite lengthy. Does anybody know what could be happening? I have project on an external hd that I need to access. Would "repairing disc permissions" help anything???
Can't get applications to start-up at all. Repair on computer was basic (i think) I wrote down what they did in a prior post below. I downloaded fcp rescue, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I'm also, not to sure how to use it???? Here's what error report reads after fcp quits:

FCP unexpectedly quits when I try to capture HDV footage
I'm trying to capture HDV footage shot on the Canon XHA1 and my FCP unexpectedly quits every time. I've used this type of footage and camera before with no issues.
I've trashed the preferences, tried setting the scratch disk to an external drive and on the hard drive.
I'm not sure what to try next?
Do i have to re-install?
anything would help!

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player. The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears. An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit. My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8. DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops. My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9. The DVD Player is version 4.0. My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2. The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0. The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.
AnthonyLao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands. -
I am trying to get iTunes up and running again on my PC. I have followed the "iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues" I have uninstalled, re installed, made a new user account gone through the system - wide fixes and still no joy. There are 5 Ipod devices in the house and we deperatly need to get this fixed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

IDVD unexpectedly quits and/or video freezes during burn
Please help! I'm going crazy trying to get a completed video project burned onto DVD. I have three video programs (one is a slide show), all created in Final Cut Pro and saved as either Final Cut Quicktimes or Quicktime movies using H264 compressor. The programs are imported into iDVD 4.0.1 (they cumulatively amount to less than one hour). Two different things are happening. Sometimes, iDVD churns for 16 hours, spits out the DVD, and says it unexpectedly quit. The DVD plays, but the slide show program freezes about 3/4 into (audio continues but video freezes). Other times, iDVD churns for hours and hours, only to quit and spit out a blank DVD.
This has never happened in the past. I've never before had trouble burning DVDs. The only change I recently made was this: I changed the name and password of the administrative account user. Also, this computer was iSync'd with another mac and about a week ago, all my preferences disappeared and programs opened as if for the first time (although nothing on the hard drive was lost).
Here's what I've tried: MacSweeper (although it has authenticaltion problems - I authenticate and then everytime I try to run it, it says it's not authenticated, so I can't tell if it's working), MacJanitor, I've checked all the preference settings and nothing comes up in error. I've also tried the Easter Egg approach and I got the same result (freeze 3/4 through).
Here's what I have: iMac G4, 800 MHz CPU, 1 GB memory, OS X (10.4.2), iDVD 4.0.1.
The slide show program is the only one messing up on the burned discs. Do you think it has anything to do with the new H264 compressor (in the past I've never used that, and the other two programs - which are fine on the DVD - are Final Cut Quicktimes).
Help me please - before I do something violent to this computer!!! Thanks for any advice.
ShannonThanks for your suggestions, David. My remaining issues are these, and anyone with ideas is welcome to chime in here:
First, I've never encountered this problem in the past, even with the same amount of available disc space. It seems like the Tiger upgrade is what's causing the problem, but so far it's been impossible to isolate. Has anyone heard anything about this or found a permanent solution?
On that same note, I understand what you're saying about an external drive. I don't have one, and it seems superfluous that I should need to spend money on one when this process worked fine a year ago. But I guess I'll try it if nothing else works better.
Second, fortunately, I wised up to the Disk Copy solution to make back-up copies of my ONE usable DVD. But I'm extremely concerned that I will encounter this same problem the next time I need to burn from iDVD. I have no idea why this one disc worked and all my other attempts failed. There must be something identifiable going on in all these similar cases, and it doesn't make sense to me that the permanent solution lies in somehow working AROUND iDVD instead of through it. And I guess I won't spend the money to upgrade to iLife '05 if the possibility exists that this problem will persist.
So there are my lingering concerns and frustrations. For now, I'm walking away from this project with exactly ONE useful DVD produced from iDVD out of approximately 20 attempts. Something's wrong with this picture. Ugh! -
HI! My itunes on windows 7 opens once. If i close it, then it will not open again. I then need to turn computer off and back on and it will open again, once. I have tried troubleshooting with the article 'unexpected quits, freezes or launch problems' but that did not help. I have also tried disabling the Bonjour Service. No change either. Please advise. Thanks.

Importing Tiffs - FCP unexpectedly quits
I have been importing tiffs at 100 dpi and 1000 pixels (either landscape or portrait depending on orientation). Every time I load into the Viewer, FCP either unexpectedly quits or I get the gray screen of death.
I have tried different formats (png, jpeg). I have tried different sizes (40 dpi, 72 dpi). They are definitely RGB because they are screen caps. We just installed more RAM, going from 1.5 Gig to 2.5 Gig. The only thing that works is 72 dpi and fitting to screen (either 720 wide or 540 high).
What could the cause of this be? Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need more RAM?
Dual 2G PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9) FCP 4.5 HDI don't care what your IT people think as ALL the general computing IT people I've ever dealt with (and I have dealt with A LOT) don't have the imagination to really understand what is going on in a graphics driven computing environment.
sooooo,
TAKE OUT THE RAM and try again. If it still crashes the IT guys might be right, if it works, you can lord it over them until the the cowboys win the superbowl again .... (which will be a very, very long time!)
keep at it!
x
edit: I really am this grumpy but I will explain: when you use images, you are likely pushing into realms of your new ram that other applications do not require and therefor will not access. This is the simplistic explanation of why FCP may crash while other progams seem to run unaffected. Launch Activity Monitor and examine how much ram is being used, how many page swaps are taking place, etc to get a feel for the relative demands of each application.
IT people often do not understand Photoshop, FCP, AE etc system requirements. They really have no clue as to the demanding nature of image manipulation and the amount of RAM necessary to serve the application(s). Do you have more than one open at the same time? -
FCP X "unexpectedly quits" every time I click "Import Media."
I recently decided to upgrade our office software from FCP 7 to FCP X. I've worked with FCP X on my personal laptop with no issues, but for some reason, the MacBooks and iMacs at work are having issues. The biggest issue is the application "unexpectedly quitting." On my personal iMac, any time I try to "Import Media" in any way (hitting Command I, via the Event Library or the Project Library) Final Cut just unexpectedly quits and brings up a huge long error message.
I've read other threads on here that suggest trashing your preferences using Digital Rebellion software and hiding events, and I've tried those things, but they didn't work. I trashed the whole application and reinstalled it already. I've rebooted about 100 times. Am I missing something?
Also, why does this seem to be such a big problem for FCP X users? Why does FCP X crash so frequently? FCP 7 very rarely crashed on me.
I'm using the following:
iMac
27-inch, Mid 2010
Processor: 2.8 GHz Inrtel Core i5
Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2750 1024 MB
Software: OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)If there is a software conflict in the way the user is set up. It seems as if there is something on the work machines that isn't compatible with FCP. A new, clean, admin user is one way to test some things in the system.
The last time I crashed FCP I was playing with it on a system that I knew would fail because of the 680MX graphics card.
P.S. are the work machines on a network of some sort, maybe with remote devices mounted? -
FCP X unexpectedly quits when trying to export
Every time I try to export my project from Final Cut X it takes about 2 hours to get to around 40% and then unexpectedly quits. How can I stop this from happening?
Trash your preferences. Download and run the appropriate version of FCP RESCUE...click TRASH and try again.

Old FCP file unexpectedly quitting when trying to reconnect offline media
An old project that I transfered from one computer to my new mac pro is not working.
When I open the FCP file it asks me to choose a scaling quality. Either: Normal, Fastest, or best. I have tried all three (with the same result.)
Next it says 152 media files are offline and 28 render files are offline. I kept all these files in the same folder when I transfered the project to my new computer, so I thought I would simply reconnect them. I click "reconnect," search for the first file, find it, and click it. As soon as I click the name of the file, not "choose," just the name of the media file, FCP unexpectedly quits. I click report and send the automatic message to Apple. It is really long, but if you want I can post that message. If any one has any ideas or could offer some help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for your time!
Peace,
AndrewLet me know if this isn't right or if you want the first part, or what follows this. Thanks a lot!
