FCP - Motion incompatibility irritation

I need to rant. I am working on a 4 x 52-minute documentary series in HD. I am a power user (perhaps regrettably). And so I use filters, motion templates, etc... As all those of us who use FCP know by now, there is a major issue surrounding Motion templates. They crash FCP consistently and constantly. And please don't ask me to 'export' all my motion templates into .mov. It'll take me a couple of days to do so and I'm not even sure that will solve the problem. The point is that this has been dragging on for several months now and we have no joy. I really hope Apple is not waiting for the next major release to fix this. There are simply too many of us with this same problem and it's not fair. I am down to doing a command-S every 30 seconds or so. Nuts. I wish I, at least, knew if the problem was from the Motion side or the FCP side. No one seems to know. Alea jacta est.
Please note that if anyone has a real workable solution, I'm all ears.

and additionally, why do luma levels come back from Motion clipped? As I understand it, Motion will convert to RGB and clip levels above 100%, but its done it to everything by about -10%. Strange, think I'll stick to QT exports in future, you know exactly where you stand

  • Two 24" LCD Monitors with FCP / Motion

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009) with the new ATI Radeon 4890 dual DVI video card and one Apple 24" LCD monitor. I'm using this setup for primarily FCP/Motion work. Question:
    - Can the ATI Radeon 4890 handle two 24" LCD monitors, or do I need to purchase a second video card?
    - Can FCP / Motion handle two video cards?
    Thanks!

Can the ATI Radeon 4890 handle two 24" LCD monitors
ABSOLUTELY. There are two monitor connections on the card. One DVI, the other the Apple connector.
Can FCP / Motion handle two video cards?
Yup. Most FCP workstations I have been on, and personally own, are two monitor setups. That is a fairly typical setup.

when i install the new os my fcp, motion and many adobe software not working so please help me out.
there are so many videos on youtube but i want know any solution from apple side plz my so many works are pending becuze i am working as Video Editor.

You need to be more specific about which software applications you're using, the versions and what happens when you try to open them.
It would also be nice if you could include which model MacBook Air you're using.

  • Sequence settings not maintained between FCP & Motion

My sequence settings in FCP are the same as in Motion however when I bring in a Motion file that I’ve created or a template it seems to revert back to square pixels. I found the “Correct for aspect ratio” in the view menu, which made the Motion file appear more like the FCP, but when I save the file and a template they still come into FCP in the wrong aspect ratio. In pref. settings for both projects (FCP & Motion) the Pixel Aspect Ratio is HD (960x720), not square. My project size is 1280 x 720. Can anyone help me understand how to get the Motion Project to play nice with FCP. When I stretch and adjust the Motion file to fit the FCP aspect ratio the render looks crappie.
    Using FCP Studio 2

Thank you, Thank you!!! Now I understand what you were talking about in the 16 x 9 post answer that you gave.
    From the 16 x 9 post:
"This is what happens in FCP as well. The only thing i find is that when I drop the project back into FCP it defaults to having an Distort value of 33. I have to click on it and change it back to 0 to make it display properly."
In that post you didn't mention "Aspect Ratio" parameter in the motion tab. I remember something else I had to adjust like that. Again, thank you. Now to see if the render is still crappie.
No the render of the font on the Motion file is still crappie. Aside from changing the font, does anyone have any suggestions?

  • FCP motion tabs and things

When I am im (for example) the motion tab in FCP, and i want to increase a slide (say the scale slider) how do i increase the scale by an increment of 1 at a time. The only wa i see of doing this is
    -typing in a new figue
    -moving the slider
In horrid Avid I would press the up or down arrow and the settings would change accordingly so it's easy to fine tune and not be guessng figures...there musy be a way of doing this in FCP?

Doh.. am i being thick here? < </div>
Well, yes, you are, but we are all members of the DOH! Club.
Some of us won't admit it.
You are going to find that the increments on some of those FCP motion and effects sliders are nonlinear or completely nonsensical.

  • Picture w/FCP Motion looks different in canvas

Hi- I'm trying to scale and pan using the FCP motion tab. It looks right in the viewer, but in the canvas, the scaling and panning is off. Both are on 100% and conform aspect ratio is turned off in the canvas is unchecked. Have done this effect many times, and never had this problem. Any ideas??

In the picture below there are 5 blue keyframes
The black keyframes on the bottom depict different locations that the image moves on the screen
The green keyframes in the middle show in order scale at 100% at 50% and at 150%
If your image stays at 100% scale the entire time then the green line should be a straight line with no keyframe marks whatsoever

  • Roundtrip between FCP & Motion not working

Hi, I have just upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 with Motion 3. Wanted to try the roundtrip integration between FCP & Motion. When I send to motion, my clips are not recognized in motion, I have to physically reconnect the media in the media tab. I thought it is suppose to be automatic.
Do anyone encounter the same problem as me?

let's go back to the purpose:
I have written a mobile app on which people can during a sports match capture the time of the important moments by pressing buttons.
I then convert the time information into an XML or CSV file that can be read by the different NLE. Given that Sony Vegas allows to import
markers independently from a sequence. Now I look at the same things for Premiere. This allows to edit the highlights very quickly vs watching
    the entire match coverage again.
I try to replicate that on Premiere through the FCP XML, but now that the roundtrip works, the issue is that FCP XML in its structure wants a sequence.
I could imagine to provide a dummy sequence that can be overlayed by the real content just to preserve the markers. Any ideas?

  • Best program to monitor time spent on FCP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro?

I run a small company as a free lance doc-film maker and was wondering if anyone could recommend the best program for keeping track of time spent working on Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Soundtrack Pro projects for my clients.
I'd like a program that tracks how long I spend on each Final Cut Studio application, like that I can itemize my billing to clients...so many hours spent editing in FCP, doing effects in Motion, even internet research on Safari when looking for photographic/film archives.
Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can help me,
    - Nicholas

In general I'd say a spreadsheet or text document and your own diligence are close enough to get an idea, as charging for the time spent in software isn't going to make you a lot of money.

  • FCP-- MOTION-- FCP WORKFLOW

I've posted a variation of this question in the QT forum but I think that the MOTION experts might provide valuble input for this quandary. Here's what's happening (I've read the posts under long render times in the FCP forum but nobody has really spelled out what the problem is.):
I opened up a new project in FCP and imported a large still (TIFF pixel dimentions:2880 X 1920). I created a new sequence and then placed the clip of the still frame in the timeline. I then SEND TO -->MOTION PROJECT and embed it so that it feedsback any changes to FCP automatically. Now in MOTION I select the layer with the still image and REPLICATE so that there are 50 copies of the same obeject arranged in a stack and then adjust the scale so that the topmost object has a scale close to zero and the last object has a scale around 350%. Lastly I add a attract to behavior so that the objects become animated and kind of look like a warping vortex. Theres also a mask thrown in somewhere. So that's it:1 large still, 1 replicator, 1 behavior, 1 mask, 2 layers for about 60 seconds. Everything in Motion moves fine. I think the playback stutters a little and it does drop a couple of frames, but I get the main idea and I can monitor in real time on an external monitor. I save and then move back to FCP. Back in FCP things slow way down. It takes FCP about three minutes just to get back up to speed and display the current playhead frame. I cannot playback the clip at all because the program just kind of hangs and is not responsive at all. I have tried using QT Conversion with this clip and tried to Export to IPOD. It estimated 15 hours to do the job. A MPEG 2 export using COMPRESSOR with all settings on best and highest took 24 hours to complete. That's around 45 minutes per frame!!
Can someone detail the actual specifics of how motion and fcp differ in accessing/reading data and then how compression actually works as well?
    Any takers?
    Please enlighten me.

    Thanks for the tip Patrick.
The scary thing is that I've already checked out that material. I obviously need to re-read it(maybe a couple of times). The nuts and bolts section spells out really the ins and out of Motion and the way it is hardware based and and GPU dependent. I understand that it was overkill. I get that. I'm definitely looking at this as a how can I learn from my mistake angle, not a this computer *****, or this software is buggy angle.
It might sound worse than it actually was (for Motion that is). Motion was totally functional accessing and modifying the clip. I could add a MIDI behavior and modify the scale of the layer or object. It was a little slow but it was responsive. FCP on the other hand is where I ate dirt. Not only in the compression stage but also just playback. Like I mentioned before after modifying and saving the embedded .motn clip in Motion and bouncing back to FCP it takes FCP about 3-5 minutes just to read and display the current frame. Before that the pointer just pinwheels. How is it that Motion is able to read the clip while FCP almost crashes trying to read one frame?

  • FCP: Motion Distort Aspect Ratio -33.33?

    Good morning,
I recently exported two different sequences from FCP. Both films were exported using ‘QuickTime Movie’ and ‘Current Settings’.
One of the films came out letter-boxed and the other did not.
In investigating this I found the only difference in the settings of two films seems to be that under the 'Distort' field in 'Motion' tab of the FCP Viewer, the Aspect Ratio for the letter-boxed video was set at '-33.33' while for the full-screen the Aspect Ratio was set for '0'. When I changed the -33.33 to 0 I got the full-screen, non-letter-boxed image I wanted.
Both films are also played with QuickTime player using ‘Conform Aperture to: Clean’ under the ‘Presentation’ tab of [Command]-J.
Why was the Aspect Ratio for these clips set at -33.33? Since I didn't set this, it must have been an automatic setting.
I'm sure I'm missing something here.
    Cheers,
    BurntMonkey

    Studio X,
Thanks again. 'Squeeze Mode' is the DVX100B's solution to fitting a 16:9 aspect on a 4:3 chip. If I understand correctly when in the mode the DVX basically animorphically squeezes the footage onto the chip. Then when it is handled in post the footage is 'stretched' and you are left with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Yes, when I first drag a clip to the timeline, I do get the message about the sequence settings not matching and do I want to change them to match the current clip. Is this when the Aspect Ratio is set to -33.33?
My question is still 'Why?' When I reset the aspect ration back to '0' I get the full-screen, 16:9 image that I was hoping for in the first place. But I'm wondering when this will come back to haunt me. I have burned a DVD using the exported sequence so everything seems to be OK.
Thanks for your help in understanding this.
    Cheers,
    John

  • EPS File and FCP/Motion

Ladies/Gentlemen, I have my Logo in a EPS Format and I am trying to keep the Transperancy. I tried exporting out of Photoshop and Illustrater as a Tiff file with no success. I also tried Jpeg , but ofcourse I get a white background. Can anyone let me know how to prep or convert an EPS file to work in FCP and Motion.

When saving a TIFF out of Photoshop, the second save dialog box offers the options for transparency, however this is based on that your logo is on a transparent background, not a white background.

  • FCP- Motion- FCP?!

    HI ALL,
    1) FCP for Scale-In the video will be unsharp ; Motion will be the best tool for Zoom-In (Scale-In)?
    2) Say, Mastered/Edited video in FCP then send to Motion for further effects processing and now do the video be able to return to FCP after saved in Motion?
    Thanks for now and appreciate!

GAH!! I just now realized what you were talking about with the camera zoom quote above.
I thought you actually meant a CAMERA's zoom!! No no no... in Motion, you can zoom in the virtual camera if you have something in 3D space created in Motion!! That's what that was talking about.
No... just 'zooming' in on a video won't be any better in FCP or in Motion whether you make it a 3d world or not.
Ok... sorry for the misunderstanding. But hopefully the render got it to something you like. For me... anything over 133 scale is really bad. 133 is what I used to do to make a 4:3 video into a 16:9. It worked just well enough not to care, but I'd never want to do that for professional broadcast.
But then again... I've also scaled something a lot more and used it as an 'effect cut' if you grunge it up a bit and make it desaturated it can have a nice (though over used) effect on an interview. The grunging up hides the soft nature of the over-scale.

  • FCP Motion round trip-what render settings does FCP use? Motions or FCPs?

FCP's sequence set to 8 bit SD uncompressed (not 10 bit YUV-although the clips are 10 bit uncomp, this is how the facility house wants it).
Do Motion's render settings matter if the clip arrives back in FCP as a .motn? For instance doMotion's view menu (options field rendering (altF) & draft/normal/best) and the Motion project settings(8 bit/float etc) make any difference or does FCP 8 bit sequence video processing setting override?
    \Many thanks

and additionally, why do luma levels come back from Motion clipped? As I understand it, Motion will convert to RGB and clip levels above 100%, but its done it to everything by about -10%. Strange, think I'll stick to QT exports in future, you know exactly where you stand

  • Work Flow for FCP-Motion-DVD Studio

All right, this is all new. Earlier this morning, I was able to finally go from FCP to Motion to DVD Studio, burned a DVD, and was able to play it on MAC, PC and home DVD player. Then, I edited another video in FCP, and think I lost the handle.
What is the work flow and what are the export/import settings for broadcast quality when needing to edit in FCP, add changes in Motion, and Burn in DVD Studio:
    1. Edit in FCP, export as what?
    2. Open Motion and import ??, make edits, export as what ??
    3. Open DVD Studio, import ??, create menu, etc., build and format, then Burn.
Do I bring it in to Compressor out of FCP? I don't want to compress it.
    Thanks
    g5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

umm, you'll find answers for these questions in those big books that came in your software boxes. you're asking questions that only you can determine based upon the video format you're working with, the graphics you want to use and how much video you're wanting to stick on a dvd.
you have to compress to mpeg2 to get whatever video you're working with in fcp onto a dvd.
time to open the manuals and do the tutorials.

  • Workflow (FCP-Motion-Soundtrack_DVDSP) & Apack

I've been encoding mp2 & ac3 files in Compressor & Apack (since DSP 1.0) and used to building up assets outside DSP before authoring.
Now though, with a workflow that includes sending clips to Motion & Soundtrack Pro from within FCP, I can get away with NOT rendering out any files (i.e. keeping all files as QTRFs) and then dragging these into DSP 3.0. DSP then does the background rendering (using the same engine as compressor) at the bitrate I set in Preferences.
All familiar I guess, and I'm getting good results WITHOUT having a bunch of large files kicking around before the build, and with the advantage of making a small adjustment to, say, a Motion file, which will then filter it's way up the line & auto update itself.
Should I be worrying about Apack though? There doesn't seem to be a setting for the audio to be compressed into an ac3 within DSP. Am I risking a data-rate problem down the line if I do it this way? (just working in Stereo at the moment). Also, what about the audio volume levels for DVD (that I used to tweak in Apack?)
    Any thoughts? Cheers.

    Hi Simon
I guess it really comes down to the work you're doing per job. I never used to use A.pack because I didn't have a need for it. I was encoding at low enough bitrates with short enough durations not to bother. A few projects gave me problems with 'bitrate too high' errors and then I found the advantage of A.pack. Now I'm using DVDSP4 and Compressor2 so A.pack is not so important (although I still have it on the system for special occassions). DVDSP4 still doesn't encode to .ac3 but Compressor 2 does. If you're generally not having any problems with your projects and you're comfortable with your workflow then why mess with it.
Personally I still can't help rendering out all my assets and mpeging them before I get to DVDSP - after reading some of the bizzare problems that turn up in this forum and never experiencing most of them myself I'm quite happy with this process. Plus it gives me more opportunities to go make a coffee!
    Cheers
