FCP2, Compressor 3 and QMaster - Is it fundamentally broken?

I posted this to the Compressor forum and there have been no replies.
Has anybody gotten FCP2 and Compressor 3 to submit jobs to a Qmaster cluster and actually produce output?
I have been trying for days - have read the threads here and in the Compressor section and so far cannot get it to work.
Jobs are automatically canceled on submission and FCP2 then hangs and has to be forced to quit.
Qmaster and compressor services stall and become red in Activity Monitor.
I have reset services and restarted background service (in compressor) and even done a full os and fcp2 re-install.
I have tried QuickClusters and full managed controller/service clusters. I have tried a single machine cluster and multi-machine clusters. All no-go.
I can make it all work if I submit to "this computer" but never to a qmaster cluster.
Anybody had better results?

I am having the same exact problem. I did a complete sweep of compressor and qmaster files, but no luck so far on getting it to work. I guess I will have to go the DVD studio route also (except that the files produced with it don't look as good for some reason...)

  • Can't install compressor 3 and Qmaster. Can anybody help?

I have brought a brand new MacPro and an upgrade version of FCS 2. However, it doesn't allow me to install Qmaster and Compressor. Both applications boxes are dimmed.
    why?

Maybe a brand-new Mac did not have FCS installed on it and this is why your upgrade version does not work? How about other apps? I must admit I do not understand how you could install any part of the upgrade version of FCS2 on a brand-new machine. Please tell us more about the installation process that you have employed.

  • How did I end up with compressor 4 and qmaster 3.53?

I'm having my first experience with distributed processing via Qmaster and I figured that it would be easy to start with compressor, but I also wanted to set it up for rendering in Final Cut Pro.
I notice that despite having bought compressor 4, I still have the old qmaster.  Is that because the Qmaster I have came with my final cut?  I thought qmaster came with compressor?
If not, how do I get the newest qmaster, so that I can set up a network of compressor 4/qmaster linked nodes?
    This might be worth mentioning:
    I have 2 macbook pro's:
    Osx 10.8.5 and 10.9.1
    One Mac Pro
    10.7.5
Thanks in advance for your help!

OK. Up until C4.0, Qmaster was a stand-alone application and accessible through the Preference Pane in Systems Preferences. In C4.0, and until 4.0.7, it became an embedded app – found within the Compressor.app file. That's why you don't ordinarily encounter the Qmaster file…you have to go digging to find it. (And it's altogether different in 4.1)

  • Compressor (and Qmaster) won't update

Compressor and Qmaster will not update to version 2.0.1. I've downloaded the updates multiple times. It always asks me to restart to install, which I do, but the updates never install.
There was an old thread discussing this very problem, back in 2007. This is it:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1213418
If this problem has been resolved elsewhere, I'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. This is a minor annoyance but it's still an annoyance. An iMovie update installed fine just a minute ago, but these two updates remain in the Software Update queue no matter what I do.

    Scott_M wrote:
What does Apple consider a legitimate contractual obligation to its customers when it sells, supports and issues timely updates, often with ambiguous or incomplete documentation, any software suite claiming a level of functionality that accomplishes what it purports to achieve? When the documentation is lame and AppleCare demands periodic fees to show legacy users the way that their documentation does not, then I believe that bond of trust is just as broken as the disabled software. And because Microsoft disappoints, does not, in my opinion, give Apple license to do the same. We've all been conditioned to expect Microsoft is inferior in customer support. Apple risks degrading its image, despite a Genius Bar that is superficially there to help with common-place iPod/iPhone problems but shovels those with expensive software packages off to the AppleCare queue, through a corporate protocol of feeding the upgrade cycle. When Compressor 3 is purportedly just as buggy, how does this engender a practical level of consumer confidence one will ever receive what one pays for? I know FC Studio is a complex collection of entangled components, but why should Compressor remain such a stumbling block after all these years of updates based on presumed fixes?
Final Cut Studio is marketed at professional users. We are a niche userbase and as such, it is not worth training Geniuses in all the ins and outs of FCP because 1) there is a heck of a lot to learn and 2) they probably wouldn't use that knowledge very often.
If you compare Final Cut Studio to other professional software, you will see that you are getting a great deal. Most professional software requires you to take out a support contract in order to get any level of support at all (even software updates), and some even mandate that you pay for 1 year's worth of support when you buy it. These packages cost considerably more and you don't get 8 applications in one.
    Some examples:
    Avid Media Composer - $2500 + $995 standard support
    Nuke - $3500 + $1000 per year support
Boujou - $10k + $2k-6k per year support (depending on the number of licenses)
    Massive - $18k + $4k per year support
Sonic Scenarist - ~$50k + whatever support costs
Final Cut Studio - $1200 + $800 per year support (not mandated)
Remember that Color used to cost $20k before Apple bundled it into FCS for free. We are getting a bargain and this is why we put up with the bugs in Final Cut Studio.
P.S. I think I may have exaggerated how bad Compressor 3 is in FCS2. If you run the latest version on the latest OS, install it on a good foundation (i.e. don't migrate it), and give it the occasional dose of Compressor Repair, you should be just fine.

  • QuickCluster keeps vanishing with Compressor 4 and none of the solutions work, even booting from a clean system disk

I have a 2009 8-core MacPro with 16gb of RAM. QuickCluster started to disappear about three months ago. Apple support suggested that I log in as a new user and that worked for a while but the QuickCluster disappeared again. I decided to create a new system boot disk with nothing but 10.7.3 and FCPX and Compressor on it, nothing from my previous user settings. That worked for about two weeks and then the QuickCluster disappear as well. I updated Compressor last week and remarkably the QuickCluster returned....until today. Now I am back to using Adobe Media Encoder for fast encodes and I am not happy. Sure it's fast but Compressor is a much better program.
Before you suggest it: I have used Compressor remover, and Compressor fix from Digital Rebellion - no change. I have trashed library files according to Apple's support pages - no change. Permission repair - nothing. There must be something that is not in the typical pathways that Qmaster uses that is getting corrupted. Any suggestions?

Thanks for helping. A screen shot of something that isn't there might not be helpful. Let me see if I can describe the problem better.
Upon opening the Qmaster menu, I have the option to enable QuickCluster which I can do. Then the oddities start: first I get a system administrator password window which never happened before. I am logged in as an administrator and QuickCluster before always just enabled. I enter my password and close the Qmaster window however when I submit a batch, the QuickCluster option isn't there. Sometimes the computer isn't there either! (When that happens I have to trash the Qmaster library files or no rendering at all.) When closing Compressor, the system password window comes up again and if I don't enter it Compressor will not quit. Upon reopening Compressor, after the window asking if I want to enable shared services is clicked yes, the system password window comes up. If I cancel it then the QuickCluster is not enabled and Compressor behaves normally without any more requests for the system password. If I enter the password, the QuickCluster doesn't appear in the submit window and there's a chance the computer won't either.
This has occured the same way when the computer is booted off my normal system drive or the clean system boot disk that has none of my personalizations.

  • How to de-install Compressor 2 and install Compressor 1?

We are also experiencing the problems described in other posts -- chiefly lots of video ripples, artifacts and break-up in out DVD when exporting from FCP 5 via Compressor 2 and out through DVD Studio Pro 3.
Makes us want to revert to Compressor 1. We're wondering if we can cut in FCP 5, export a QT file, bring it into FCP 4.5, then resume the old, reliable workflow: export via Compressor 1 and then out through DVD Studio Pro 2 (or 3)?
We've tried to toss Compressor 2 (just trashing it, but not knowing any other files that need to be weeded out) and install Compressor 1, but Compressor 1 seems to install but is then nowhere to be found.
    And thoughts? Suggestions? Instructions?
    Thanks for your time,
    Brad

You might want to refer to Apple's notes on uninstalling DVD Studio Pro (see link below). Make backups of any of the files before you remove them, then trash everything that is referenced in the DVDSP uninstall note. After that, reinstall FCP and/or DVDSP. Specifically, you'll probably want to remove anything in Apple's note that seems to be related to Compressor, Batch Monitor, or Qmaster. The procedure that Apple documents is for an earlier version of DVDSP, but many of the recent files (versions) have retained the same names and locations.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93452
I think it is somewhat unlikely, however, that Compressor v1.2.1 will work with Final Cut Studio (FCP v5). Thus, you may have to go back to FCP HD (v4.5) if you want to use Compressor v1.2.1.

  • Extra MacBook Pro and Qmaster?

    Greetings.
I have two MacBook Pros. One, MBP#1, has a cracked screen so I had to by a second one, MBP#2, to recover fully portable capabilities. Otherwise, MBP#1 performs fine.
Is it possible for me to connect MBP#1 to MBP#2 and both to adequate, common external storage, and use Qmaster to benefit, in any way, from the additional processing power?
    Thanks,
    Wren
    MacBook Pro 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   MBP#1 2.0GHz Core Duo; MBP#2 2.16GHz Core2 Duo
    MacBook Pro 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes, that is no problem. You don't even really need external storage, either. Especially if you have 5400 rpm drives in the MBP's.
I recommend using QMasterAdminstrator instead of setting up Quick Clusters.
Do you have "N" ethernet cards in the MBP's? Or standard ethernet "G" cards? If your router and MBP's are all "N" you'll be fine with AppleTalk over wifi.
If not, I recommend you connect each MBP to the router with an CAT 5 or 6 ethernet cable. Much easier and more reliable than direct connections between the stations.
Remember that you can connect a monitor to your broken MBP to make a great desktop computer. Also, always run the MBP's plugged into the wall so they are at full processor capacity.
It's not clear from your question, but only certain programs can use QMaster to double processing power. You'll need two or more copies of Final Cut Pro WITH DIFFERENT serial numbers, or Apple Compressor. If you only have 1 serial number you have to use only 1 FCP to make the first copy of your movie.
BUT THEN you can put Compressor and QMaster on both computers and have both computers process the DV file into an MPEG2 for DVD and various formats for the web and CD.
    Good luck!

  • Maya and Qmaster working once.

I have setup a MacPro as a cluster controler and the cluster has 20 G5 Quads (PowerPCs) and they all have Maya8.5 and Qmaster 2.3.
I set my scene and project folder on a network volume, so I Set the envirment as:
    mkdir /Volumes/test
    chmod a+rwx /Volumes/test
    mount_afp -o nobrowse afp://test:[email protected]/test /Volumes/test
I am able to submit a job and have it render all the frames successfuly, once that job is finished, if I try to send anotherone it fails. I have restart every machine and restart services, create the cluster again, and then it will work. Why is this happening? is there a way to fix this?
When I send it the second time I get the following errors:
"HOST [computer name] Unix Command error: 211, //Maya exited with status 209"
Here is a screenshot of the batch monitor displaying some of the errors.
    http://www.rem7.com/images/batchmonitor.jpg
    Thanks

please take with a grain of salt.
i am not a professional. i am very new to using qmaster, and clusters. by the way you explained i am nowhere near the professional as you.
I am an engineer, and have used unix, linux, mac, and windows for a long time along with aix and others.
this is a total long shot, and i don't know if it is possible, but can you have qmaster run a script when a job is done? maybe you can write a script to run post job success that will restart the services. that way when the job is complete you just have to well.. restart the services instead of having to reboot, and restart service manually.
it would be nice to see the entire error. if you could extend that column a little so that it shows it that would be helpful.
i would like to help and keep up with the post. i am trying to learn as much as possible about this technology.
thanks, and sorry that i don't have a definite answer just a suggestion.
i base this on what i have seen on my own cluster. MBP and G5 working together with compressor and filters. what i have noticed is that after a job has finished the Activity Monitor shows the compressord daemon to be (Not Responding), but I can send another job and it will work, but the status doesn't change. I know you are using 3rd party software "Maya" so i am wondering if after the job it is doing the same, and then cannot connect to the specific daemon is needed.
seeing a pic of you Activity Monitor before and after on the machines would helpful as well.

  • Xsan and Qmaster - How?

After reading the thread Qmaster killed my Xsan, I got a little worried about trying Qmaster with Xsan.
At work, we have an Xsan setup with 12 clients, all recently upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
I have read through what the Distributed Processing Setup manual says about Xsan, but that was not much.
Can somebody please give some advice on how to set it up properly?
This is what I have done so far.
    1. One client is set up as "Services and controller"
    2. All the other clients are set up as "Services only"
    3. All clients are set up with the Compressor service as shared and managed
(I have not yet made the cluster with Qadministrator)
What should I set the cluster storage to, in System Preferences -> Apple Qmaster? Do I need to set the cluster storage for every client, or only the controller?
What should I set the network interface to, inside System Preferences -> Apple Qmaster?
I would really appreciate some advice from somebody who has got Qmaster working well with Xsan, or knows very well how to set it up.
(I posted this in the Xsan forum, as I figured it would be more likely to find people with experience using Qmaster with Xsan here.)

    Thomas,
First of all, this thread is almost two years old. Much has changed since then.
Specifically, FCS 2 has come out with many updates for Compressor 3 and Q master.
I can tell you that we have Q master running on our X-SAN and so far (knock on wood) it has NOT killed it! In fact, we're harnessing 30+ G-5's for rendering to DVD Studio Pro and it's screaming fast.
As far as specific advice, we had no special help other than reading the manual. It's a bit tricky setting things up, as there's a difference between "managed" and "quick cluster". I would suggest starting small with just a couple of systems and establish the connectivity and settings. Once you get it working on at least two systems, the rest is just adding more CPU's to the cluster. Good luck.

  • Is it possible to transfer Full-HD videos (from a Full-HD camcorder) from iMovie 11 to compressor 4 and create there a AVCHD DVD which can be played in HD quality at a PS/3?

Is it possible to transfer Full-HD videos (from a Full-HD camcorder) from iMovie 11 to compressor 4 and create there a AVCHD DVD which can be played in HD quality at a PS/3?

    Yes.
    In iMovie use SHARE/Export Movie.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3a9e5615
Choose 1920x1080 (or size of your choice.
Give it a name and location.
You can drag this file into Compressor.
In Compressor, use "Create BluRay Disk"
    That should work fine.
There is another alternative, where you could skip the DVD and Compressor.
    Just SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME
    Choose Movie to MP4
In Options, choose h.264 as the Codec.
Choose a bit rate of 16000 or less.
    Create the movie.
You can then put it on a USB thumb drive and play it on the PS3.

  • Compressor 3 and WMV

Who has Compressor 3 and is creating WMV files out? Apple's Compressor page says support for wmv files from Telestream Episode Pro plug-in, but that is about $900. Would Flip4Mac (which worked with compressor 2) still work?
    TonyTony

I have the Flip4Mac package and it shows up under QT Export Modules, just like in Compressor 2.

  • No connection between compressor 4 and final cut pro 7

If i send a file from FCP7 to compressor, I hear a beep, but compressor don t start-up.
I have make shure mark in / out is used, sequence sellected, still no reactie.
No i can only export to quicktime which make my move less nice. I have ask a expert to look into it but he cant find the problem. I hoop this message will help

Don't have FCP X... I have FCS 3 along with Compressor 4 and Motion 5.
'Just to be clear: You can send files from FCP7 to Compressor 3.5.'
Yes... just did a test sending a FCP 7 file to Compressor 3.5:

  • Compressor 4 and Final Cut 7, how do you send a sequence?

Just bought Compressor 4 and having a problem sending a sequence to it from Final Cut 7, and the old version of Compressor is gone. Any ideas what to do?

If you have FCP X, Motion 5, Compressor 4 and FCS 3 installed, FCS 3 should work as intended. You don't need to place FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 into a folder and move FCS out of it's folder. If you do this; FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 won't be able to be updated and you probably won't be to add plug-ins and add-ons to them.
I have the setup like the above paragraph and everything works as intended.
besottedly... I figured out the other day the work-around that you posted. Makes life easier!!!
    iMac 27", 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3, 2TB HD + 256GB SSD, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5 • FCS 3 • FCP X • Motion 5 • Compressor 4 • OS X 10.7 (Lion) • iPad 1&2 • Apple Tv 2

  • EQ, compressor, limiter and so on

So I guess GB for iOS does not support EQ, compressor, limiter and so on. But is there another app that will solve this using audiobus or Inter-App Audio?

The problems started before I did any removal.
I used a script by ShowStopper which pulled every part of compressor and DVDSP out except the compressor presets.
After the removal the original problem still existed. So I reinstalled as mentioned above.
However, today, I had an under an hour production and it finished without a hitch. I am encoding an hour and a half production and have gotten 28% of the way through.
    Thanks for the heads up
    Jim
