Feature proposal: Optional keywords

Use case:
I tag some of the shots with the name of persons visible in the shot. I organize all these names under a (Persons) keyword in the Keyword list. I want these keywords / names to be included when sending the shots as files to others, but not when publishing shots on the net.
Proposed feature:
Keywords can be set to public or private mode with the "Include on Export" checkmark in the keyword settings. Include a third mode, optional. Then there can be a checkmark named "Include optional keywords" in export and publish actions. This would enable me to set the (Persons) keyword tree to optional and be able to include or exclude them when exporting or publishing. An even more comprehensive solution would be to provide several classes of keywords, that can be included or excluded independently. But one optional class would be enough for me.

Yes, of course.
But the risk for human error is big if you do it that way. And you need to open the keywork list over and over to check that the public/private flag is right before you export, there is no way to ckeck that from the export dialog. Not a very convenient workaround in real life.
What I proposed would make it possible to store export/publish presets that have the right setting for that purpose.

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.

Against TOU which you "agreed" to in order to post in these user to user forums.  If you want to "suggest" something to Apple, do so in the Product Feedback area.

  • Feature request: Better keywording options

There appears to be no improvements in keywording otpions in LR4b.
    How about:
Larger panels of suggested keywords. (could be configuarable in options, like the number of recent files option in PS)
Larger numbers of keywords in a set.
Buttons to apply a complete set with one click.
Put the keywording tools,( ie the same panels as in library module),  in the import dialogue.

    Hi Deepak
Thanks for your response. Don't take this the wrong way and please don't feel like I'm shooting the messenger here, but honestly speaking I think rtf *and* fdr format compatibility should be in your frontlog considering you are making a version 1 product that's trying to compete or at least compliment industry standard tools!
Having only fdx compatibility is like Office 2007/2010 only having .docx with no backwards compatibility for legacy formats - it renders the tool useless in the eyes of many potential customers. It great to push new and more open formatting standards but there must, must, must be legacy support too - I mean you already support import of rtf and fdr so it's nuts that it doesn't go out that way too!
I have found that having .txt and .pdf as a bridge for the older software tends to be an inefficient workaround. There are always occasional formatting errors that crop up due to the use of some type of special character that isn't translated properly in the conversion and therefore there is always a need to spend an additional 15-20 minutes re-checking entire scripts to make sure there are no problems before sharing the material to a colleague or client who either cannot afford to or hasn't bothered to upgrade to Final Draft 8 (or Adobe Story ).
That's just my two cents but I'm sure that many people would agree with me that this small update should be a priority to make AS (sorry, I've gone an abbreviated another one of your products - doh!) a more appealing alternative to the tools people may have been used to in the past.
Hope you take this pledge into serious consideration for your next upcoming update!
    Thanks,
    Kaush

  • Feature request: better keyword management tool

I'm re-organizing my keywords and I think that LR needs some work in keyword management and DAM features.
I miss something like separate keyword management tool which would have two keyword lists, which would work a bit like spatial file management in Os X finder.
Easily manage keyword hierarchy. For example: browse list and and be able to easily select keywords (now it's OK) and drag and drop them to under a new keyword (almost ok, but sometimes cumbersome, if one wants to move keyword which is/are at the bottom of the long keyword list to keyword which is at the top of the list).

Dang near impossible once you have a lot of keywords. A work-around for me has been to filter keywords first to reduce the number of keywords in the list, then do the drag 'n drop. At a minimum, a change to scroll the list when you're searching for a drop target at a variable rate that depends on mouse position, or even something simple like slowing it down when the alt key is pressed.
+1 vote - better keyword management.
Something else that may help you in the mean time: KeywordConsolidator.

  • Feature Request: Option to Not Autohide Video Controller

Curently, when you enable the built in video controller it will auto-hide when the cursor is not over the movie. I'd like to request you make the autohide feature a checkbox option in the Video properties area and have the video controller stay on the screen as the default behavior. Here's why.
When students come to a sheet with an enbedded video, they have no idea it's a video unless they accidentially move the cursor over the video area. It would be great to have the video controller always visible to let users know there is a video on the sheet, and would save developers some time from having to add instructions on the sheet to play the video. I'd like to remove any/all confusion the students might have in using content built by ROME.
    Thanks.

  • Feature Request: Option to Backup When Close Lightroom

I would like to see the option added in Catalog Settings - General in Backup to have the option to automatically backup Lightroom when you exit Lightroom in addition to the other options. This seems logical to me since when you just completed your new work is when you care the most about backing up. I would have the option to ask: Backup Now or not - so that if you just went into Lightroom to just look at something without doing any work - you don't need to backup then. Or - even better - only ask if actual changes were made in Lightroom (I am assuming the program will know if you do anything or not).
    Thanks - Cathy

While I do understand that there are still processes going when finishing a session I can see the benefit of doing the autobackup of the catalog database on ending.
I'm not a database guy but I do work with Access at the office and anytime I change a value in one of the cells it automatically changes the database. On the one hand, when sharing values between programs, it is handy to have the database file change and autosave. On the otherhand there's no "Ooops, made a mistake" going back. So 'Caution' in the keyword on this. It also doesn't help matters when others can be in the same database changing values at the same time (such is how the IT people have made it). But in the case of LR there is only the one user active at anytime.
The main reason I can see this as being beneficial is to insure against machine crashes. Then again, if the computer crashes in the midst of writing the backup there's the potential for a major corruption of the file.
So there are definite benefits and downfalls to an autobackup on quitting.

  • Feature Request:- Option to reply to reply to emails in text

    Hi there....
Is it possible to set up replying to emails to send text (with no html)
If not, can i get a feature request to send emails in text, or is there an app that has this feature?
It is sad I get maybe between 40 and 100 emails a day, that I cannot reply to on my Touchpad, or Pre 2, as they only allow text email return.
as of 2007, there were over 109 million yahoo group members across 8.8 million groups. Mostly support forums, sending and recieving emails to and from 109 million people.
These support forums and other ghelp yahoo groups, require emails to be received in text, and in our email apps had to set for text only, to avoid viruses and other attempts at marketting.
I get my yahoo support emails, on webos, but cannot reply from webos, and have to wait until i get to my laptop with thunderbird.
please can you add text send/reply option for those 109 million plus yahoo group users who cannot reply to yahoo groups emails.
    thanks....
this is a major pain and must be for others.

Managing layered PSD files in Aperture
For those who absolutely must manage layered PSD files in Aperture, here is the way to do it...
1- In your original PSD file, HIDE ALL LAYERS above the background layer
2- IMPORT this PSD file into Aperture
3- CREATE A VERSION in Aperture by choosing to edit externally in Photoshop.
4- Back in Photoshop OPEN THE ORIGINAL PSD file along with the new version
5- LINK all the LAYERS in the original PSD file and DRAG them TO the new VERSION (holding the shift key down so they pin register)
6- SAVE the new version in Photoshop
7- Back in Aperture your version is now an exact layered copy of your original which will not flatten when reopened from Aperture into Photoshop.
Obviously this process will be rather tedious if you need to deal with hundreds of layered PSD files, but if you are in that situation that implies you already have a workflow and a storage strategy that works well for you. So why change, especially to Aperture?
Adobe Bridge or Media Pro or Portfolio are the obvious programs for you !

  • Feature Request - Options to Size & Align Type by Cap Height

I have repeated this feature request at least a couple or more times in this forum over the years. It's a pretty fundamental, basic design thing that bears repeating until the feature is incorporated somehow.
From its first version up to now Adobe Illustrator has only sized type according to the height of the Em Square. That's the standard convention for print and doesn't really need to change for print publishing. However the Em square methods are really pretty bad in other areas. Designers need pixel-level control for creating and positioning type on electronic, pixel-based screens. For large format printing, sign design and outdoor advertising designers need to size type by cap height in units of inches, centimeters or pixels when designing for LED variable message center signs.
Adobe Illustrator currently can't even do something as simple as accurately aligning lettering vertically inside of a box. When aligning by way of the Em square the type is never correctly aligned. The fundamentals needed for this have never been present in the application. It really stinks. Designers have to employ all sorts of time-wasting work-arounds to get the type looking correct. This makes basic tasks like button creation far more of a time wasting chore than it should be.
All fonts have built-in values that establish a capital letter height in numerical terms (the units between the base line and M height line). Industry specific sign design software applications like Flexi and Gerber Omega access that font data and allow designers to accurately size, align and position type according to its capital letter height. Adobe Illustrator can and should be able to do the very same thing. Not only that, but Illustrator could let designers size, position and align type in terms of inches, centimeters and pixels.
I'm not sure how this feature should be incorporated. Perhaps it could be something that users can enable in the document setup. Or it could be an optional type palette. Nevertheless, it is a badly needed, very basic feature rooted in the core of Adobe Illustrator's vector object editing purposes.

I'll also add this is a feature that should be carried over into Adobe Photoshop too.
Within Adobe Photoshop if you want to size type in terms of pixels the type is, again, sized according to the Em square. Unless you're setting type at pretty large pixel sizes the rendered type really ends up looking pretty bad. That's because the edge of the baseline and the edge of the cap height line are never aligned to the pixel grid. You end up with type that's fuzzy looking on all sides. If designers were able to tell Photoshop "make this lettering 20 pixels tall according to the capital letters" the lettering would looking a whole lot better. Perfectly crisp edges on the base lines and cap height lines.

  • Address autocomplete feature proposes old invalid addresses not even in Address Book

When I start writing a recipient's name in an email I'm composing, Firefox accesses an unknown database to propose several addresses I have used previously. These often include old addresses for my recipient that are no longer valid. In fact, more often than not these invalid addresses appear first, so if I just press Enter without thinking, that's where the message will be sent. Additionally, the proposed addresses often do not include addresses for the recipient that are in my Firefox Address Book. So it's a dual problem: I get bad addresses from some mysterious database, plus I don't get valid addresses from the Address Book. I need to know where this database that Firefox is accessing is located on my computer and how to edit it to remove all those invalid addresses I keep using inadvertently, and also how to get the autocomplete function to search the Address Book, which it is not doing. I should mention that in Tools - Options - Composition - Addressing, I have "Local Address Books" check-marked, and "Directory Server" is not checked. This is the only tool I've found in Firefox that seems to be related to this problem.

Thank you for replying, Zenos, but I assure you I removed these obsolete addresses from the Address Book (including subdirectories I'd made in it). Hoping I was wrong, I anxiously tried your solution, but it doesn't seem to work. I'm not given an "Edit contact" option when I right-click on the address in a message I've put in the Drafts folder. The only options I'm given are "Add to Address Book..." (which is the opposite of what I want to do!), "Compose Mail To", "Copy Email Address", and "Create Filter from Message...". If I could actually do what you propose - access the actual record Firefox is using in the database and alter it - that would be perfect. I still believe it is accessing some other database, not Address Book. But thanks for trying to help!

  • Feature Request: Option to Load Master in External Editor

Right now, if I want to edit a file in an external editor, Aperture makes a version first. While I understand the design reasoning, I need to override this behavior in two specific cases:
First, sometimes I want to use Adobe Camera Raw to process a RAW file. Aperture should allow me to do this directly from the application without exporting the master and loading it from the Finder.
Second, and this is more important for me, I'd like Aperture to send original layered PSD files as imported back to Photoshop for editing. Aperture will import my layered PSD files without difficulty. If I export the master, I get the original file. But if I try to open it in an external editor (Photoshop) from Aperture, Aperture makes a flattened intermediate version. That's not what I want - and it destroys my non-destructive workflow by flattening all my layers in Photoshop. What I'd like is an option to have Aperture send the master layered PSD file to Photoshop, allow me to edit it, and perhaps save the changes back in Aperture as modifications to the original layered PSD file.
There's an interesting semantic issue. "Non-destructive" is more than just not touching the original files. It's allowing for a workflow which can be rolled back to previous states. My work in Photoshop uses layers, masks, adjustments, and channels to achieve this. I need Aperture to allow me to keep using Photoshop in a non-destructive way, while enabling me to edit my RAWs and other flattened files in the powerful ways that Aperture offers.
