Feature Request: AVCHD Quality to DVD?

Will Adobe Premiere Elements implement AVCHD quality video to DVD in an upcoming release?  Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 already has this great feature.  Video shot with my Panasonic HD250 camcorder looks fantastic using the AVCHD preset to DVD on VideoStudio Pro X2.  I wish Adobe Premiere Elements had this capability.

Have you worked with Corel VideoStudio Pro X2?
I have not. Other than Painter and WordPerfect (used this since it was WP Corp and version 1.1), I have not used any Corel programs, since CorelDraw 3.2, and never upgraded that. I know nothing about VideoStudio Pro - sorry. For me, PrPro does about 98% of everything that I want to do.
You might want to also post to Muvipix, as many subscribers to that site use all sorts of other NLE programs. Here, there is more of a bias towards Adobe programs, though some do have other apps. as well.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Feature Request: Raw-Lite for the F5/F55

Hi Sony Staff, Here's a feature request that I've been pondering for a long time now. Raw Lite on the F5(5). Is it a possibility? I'm a huge fan of the conventional 3:1 compressed 4K 16-bit Linear Raw from the AXS-R5. It provides a supremely high quality digital negative, with as much detail and tonality as you could ever really need. However the file sizes are very large. 1TB yeilds roughly an hour of recording time. And the storage costs associated with that are enough to scare away MANY producers from shooting Sony Raw (even with all of the benefits that doing so offers).  You guys have addressed this issue nicely with the F65 by offering Raw Lite with it's 6:1 compression (which coincidentally, is a compression rate that many, many producers are content to shoot with on the most prolific raw cameras out their - the Red Epic/Dragon/Scarlet cameras). Being able to offer producers the option to shoot Sony Raw Lite, with it's massively more managable file sizes would greatly increase the uptake of Sony Raw for production - and that benefits everyone. It benefits the camera department with a superior digital negative, it benefits post-production with greater latitude for grading and VFX, it benefits producers with a superior end product, and it benefits audiences with better looking images. Given that the F65 was able to be upgraded to offer this additional raw recording option, I assume (and hope) that it's not an impossiblity for the F5(5). So I'd urge you to strongly consider this feature request, and the added appeal it would bring to the cameras as a capture choice. Cheers, Mark

I disagree that there is little difference between 12bit and 16 bit linear raw. The difference is huge. Shadows and dark areas from the FS7/FS700 are pretty grim, lot's of noise caused by the data rounding. Besides, in terms of bit rate it's not a question of simply reducing the bit depth, you need to increase the compression. For linear raw you need 16 bits unless you do an extreme amount of data rounding. For Linear raw, if the first stop is represented by just 2 bits of data (which results in very blocky noise as noise will be one of 4 luma levels and cannot be smoothly reproduced):  stop 1: 2 bitsstop 2: 4stop 3: 8stop 4: 16stop 5: 32stop 6: 64stop 7 128 (8 bit linear limit, 128 + 128 = 256 bits)stop 8: 256stop 9: 512 (10 bit linear limit)stop 10: 1024stop 11: 2048 (12 bit linear limit)stop 12: 4096stop 13: 8192 stop 14: 16384 bitsstop 15: 32768 bits (16 bit linear limit) If you move this scale up so that the first stop is represented by using 4 bits of data you will still have pretty coarse shadows and noise (one whole f stop will only have 16 posible luma values). So rather than just use binary math most linear raw systems use floating point math to make more bits available for the shadows. But with 12bit there just isn't anywhere near the same amount of "spare" bits that you get with 16 bit, so the shadows and low key areas really suffer. Just go and look at the FS7/FS700 boards and all the compliants about unusable, grainy and blocky shadow areas in the raw. Sure raw lite would be a welcome option, but it wouldn't be one for me. The whole point of raw for me is a robust, bomb proof format that you can expose and grade as you wish without worrying about artefacts etc.

  • Top 10 feature requests for reliability

As per the Terms of Use:
Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Feedback about new feature requests or product enhancements are welcome too.
    My top 10 list:
    1) Require enough extra safe guards that users can't accidentally rename their Home folder.
    2) Don't let the Finder become unresponsive and beach-balled when dot-mac mounting is occurring.
    3) Faster Finder list view updating when sorted by last modified.
    4) OS update scripts should perform a hard disk verify before installation. If hard disk does not verify, the user should be told of the risk of proceeding and given directions on how to fix before proceeding.
    5) The filesystem should should be able to fix itself with fsck (ala AppleJack) without being booted from install CD/DVD.
    6) iPhoto Library folder should have an extra layer of protection to keep users from messing with it via the Finder.
    7) Forced shutdown via power key should give OS and filesystem more of a chance for recovery. (Not sure how this would work, but if users are doing this, it should not be so often fatal.)
    8) System maintenance scripts should have a method for running (other than cron) for those who don't leave their computer on 24/7.
    9) & 10) coming soon ...
What are your feature requests for improved reliability?

    5) The filesystem should should be able to fix itself with fsck (ala AppleJack) without being booted from install CD/DVD.
David Pogue explains why this can't be done in his Mac OS X: The Missing Manual He basically says that running fsck without an operating system disc is much akin to "a doctor performing an appendectomy on himself." While a method of doing this is provided, naturally fsck itself is not analyzed because it can't do that. To run fsck without an operating system disc, boot into single user mode, holding command-S at startup. Type /sbin/fsck -fy
    followed by return key,
    when done type:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
followed by return key and when done with that type
    exit. This is documented here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Thankfully single user mode provides more safeguards. But they aren't perfect. Fixing the directory is something that should only be done if your data is backed up, and it is obvious you may have a damaged directory. A damaged directory may have the symptoms of a dying hard drive, and it is impossible to tell the difference.
Apple is readying a really good backup system in Time Machine in Leopard. You can read more about it here:

  • Can I burn AVCHD project to DVD disc?

I've read that AVCHD uses the DVD format.  Does this mean that the nice HD camcorder recordings I have will, after being processed by PE, show nicely on a wide screen television?  Does this question even make sense.

AVCHD is High Definition, a DVD is Standard Definition
For true AVCHD quality on a disc, you need BluRay (which Premiere Elements will do, if you have a BluRay burner)
There IS a way to put "about" 20 minutes of HiDef on a BluRay, but it will NOT play in a DVD player, the disc will only play in a BluRay player

  • FEATURE REQUEST: After Effects style Placeholders and Proxies

If you feel the needs in efficient proxy workflow, welcome to the club and don't hesitate to submit feature request.
Here is the adjusted to less than 2000 symbols feature request text:
***After Effects style Placeholders and Proxies***
It would be nice if PrPro offered AE style Placeholders and Proxies workflow. There are cases, where they are extremely useful, e.g.:
    1. Huge modern formats and resource hungry codecs. Not all machines can easily handle 2k or 4k footages, some can't get real time playback even with AVCHD. Not to mention that CinemaDNG importer was discontinued partly because of inability to get real time playback in PrPro. The issue can be resolved via rendering previews, but that's not always the most efficient workflow.
    2. In multicam editing issues mentioned above increase dramatically. Rendering preview for every camera angle is simply impossible. Although PrPro offers offline clips workflow, an editor can't easily see if the clip is currently linked to a source footage or a proxy, and switching between sources and proxies involves several steps every time one needs to switch: selecting assets, making them offline, right-clicking again to link to other media, locating files on a disk; while in After Effects it's just one click once a proxy is set.
    3. Adobe Dynamic Link. PrPro communicates with AE projects via single instance of headless AE, which creates a bottleneck and entails the need to render DI for complex comps. Although AE allows to set DIs as proxies and, hence, enjoy the best of both worlds, instantly switching between DI and dynamically linked comp and no needs to replace anything in PrPro timeline, with hundreds of dynamically linked comps PrPro timeline becomes unresponsive and takes forever to render (for my rig test 30 min sequence built out of 935 dynamically linked comps, which are just source footages in their own comps, hence, the equivalent to rendered DIs set to proxies, takes around 27 hours to render, while 30 min sequence built out of the same 935 source footages renders in real time). Meanwhile, PrPro doesn't currently allow to link offline dynamically linked comps to rendered DIs.

As the person who maintains the feature request database for After Effects, I can confirm that the number of times an item has been requested is a major factor when we consider what to work on next. So are other factors, such as how hard the feature is to implement and maintain, how much testing is involved (often the larger concern than programming time), whether the request conflicts with something else that we are already working on, and so on. It is true that we consider not just raw numbers of requests but the details of who is making the requests---e.g., whether the requests are coming from animators or compositors, beginners or experts.
I can only speak for the After Effects team, but the Premiere Pro team works much the same way (which is unsurprising, since we are in the same group and have overlapping team members).
We also try to give some visibility into the most requested items with posts like this:

  • How to make High Quality HD DVDs from iMovie11 Toast 10 Titanium Pro?

I was searching all over the net to find answers to a problem that I have with film making at home. I'm trying to become an Indie film maker on a small amount of money to start out, so to speak. I've asked Apple over and over for some help, but they say - we can't because we don't support third party solutions. I have iMovie 11 and iMovie HD 6. I use AVCHD 1080i camcorders and a GoPro HD Hero for time lapse shots. Toast 10 Titanium Pro and a external LaCie d2 Blu-ray Drive also external hard drives. I'm trying to make high quality HD dvd's and then Blu-ray disks later also for my ( high elevation mountain video) demos. Codec/compression - bit rate/data rate - key frame - sample rate and what software to use or not is all confusing me. I've tried and I'm still not making video that looks as good as it did when first imported into iMovie. Can anyone please help me out with this mater. Thank You Good Day

Good FAQ type information [is at this link|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2424451]
In general, import to iMovie in FULL, not LARGE.
Export from iMovie using the SHARE menu. Use the 1080P Preset. You can SHARE/iTUNES, SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER, SHARE/MOVIE..., or FILE/FINALIZE PROJECT. All will use the 1080P preset.
You can also SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME, but I would not recommend it unless you know what you are doing.
Drag this file into TOAST 10 with BluRay plugin.
Check FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES in TOAST to make sure you are burning at highest quality.

  • Exporting best quality for DVD

I shot video with a Canon 5d Mk2. 1080p 30 frames, 48k.  Looks awesome in Premiere!  But when I export the video to Encore i use the Mpeg-2 DVD preset, and it just kills the quality.  I have to burn to standard DVDs because my clients need them that way, so Blu ray isn't an option.
I understand it has to compress everything, but i would like to know how to get the best quality possible.  It needs to look better! I am using CS5
    Please Help!

    John,
Thanks for your response. The issue seems so simple since I've followed steps described on Lynda.com back when I was using CS4.
I'm now using CS6.01. I created this video in CS4 and updated it in CS5. PS, AE, and Pr
I've installed all of the updates to CS6. To newest  QuickTime and to the Video Card
My PC is running Windows 7 Ent.; 64-bit Xeon CPU Quad 2.8GHz
And I'm not running other software.
The source footage is a sequenced .tiff animation I rendered out of AE.
I've made a video a few years back. A copy is here on YouTube: http://youtu.be/lAh70G_AOFE.
I'm not editing the video. I just get requests to have a DVD of the original source to play in our tradeshows. Sharp copy/product edges. It looks great in Premiere and I've set on paper my standard work from Lynda.com (Premiere Pro CS4 Essential Training - Chapter 16).
I select the Sequence in Premiere Pro and select File / Adobe Dynamic Link / Send to Encore. Then set the Project and Build settings.
But as you can see below the file exported to Encore didn't transcode (?) properly
    BEFORE Screen in Premiere:
NEW: I can see now that the Video in the timeline has the jags

  • Feature Request // Book Module: Export as indd file and management

Book Module: Export as indd file and management
I would like to request a feature to export a book module as indd file.
I like PDF's but .indd is nice also so we are able to to more in depth layouts.
Having Lightoom being able to manage all your pictures and book layouts would be nice, alot of things can be done in one application.
Another Feature:  Using Lightoom as book layout management.
Being able to send a page(s) of the book from lightroom into InDesign to do indepth layout and editing, then being able to send it back into lightroom
Almost similar to how you can send a photo from LR in Photoshop to do indepth editing and then send it back into lightroom.
This could and will ease the workflow of book management and layout design.  So lightroom will not only be able to manage photos, but also indesign and book layouts.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4238530#4238530

Why do repeat it here, as you have already filed a feature request for it?
BTW AFAIK this is already implemented: you can use Adobe Illustrator or InDesign or Opensource Scribus to edit layouts.
They are just not ready to publish how - another sign of the quality processes at Adobe.
But you do not send from the book module.
You create upfront layout templates, which you can import for use inside LR book module.
    This is a one-way street.
The book module designers did not acknowledge a use case where you might want to fiddle the exact placement of really chosen images.
It is always you first design a template, then use it.
Love it or leave it - *change it* is not an option that Adobe seems to give to their beta testers.

  • Feature Request: Lights Out Mode / tagging display.

Problem: "Lights out" mode hides tags - need to enable option to allow tags to be seen during lights out mode.
I love editing down photos to selects in lightroom, I love using the (L) LightsOut Mode to set the screen(s) to black.
however, when I do so, it hides tagging data as well. I would like an option (keyboard shortcut) to toggle the display of stars/flags/colors on and off.
    Possible solutions:
Flags and stars are simple graphics that could appear over the image or beside/under it  in tiny non distracting ways. colours could be the same or perhaps have the outer border turn to the selected colour.
ADDITIONALLY: I would love to see an option to "LIGHTS OUT" the second monitor indipendantly of the main. (this could be done in the second monitor drop down menu)

Some headphones sound just too **** loud when plugged in the headphone amp so line out is only option. However, while that works just fine for normal stereo music, it is not optimal solution for games because the HRTF is way less accurate.
So, how about adding "Headphone mode" tick box for line out (or "Use line out plug instead" tick box in headphone mode)? It would solve various issues and fix one of the most annoying problem with Z/Zx/ZxR cards right now. It should be rather simple (i.e. same settings as headphone out but different output plug) thing yet would make massive difference in usability.

  • Feature Request: iTunes support CD drive letters A&B

Not sure how to submit this feature request to Apple for iTunes for Windows enhancement so I figured I would start at the forum.
I know in the "dark ages" drive letters A&B where pretty much reserved for floppy drives. Not sure how many computers are actually still in use running Windows XP and up that still have one of those drives.
Therefore, for some time now these two drive letters have gone unused. C: in general was the first HD letter, and CD-Roms (or now DVD/Blu-Ray) drives started somewhere with D: and above depending on your computer configuration.
I changed my setup a while ago and named my two DVD drives A & B since Windows supports it just fine, as do a lot of other programs, with the exception of iTunes :-(. For some reason, iTunes will not support reading CDs from drives A or B, even if Windows autorun feature is enabled asking if it should import the CD into iTunes. Apple, what's up with that? Why actual restrict reading music from CD drives assigned letters A & B? Is this an old piece of code still lingering around in iTunes?
So, simple feature request for an upcoming iTunes release, please enable reading/important CD music from drives labeled A&B so that we can start using these letters again as well.
Anybody else want to support this simple request that should be fairly easy for Apple to implement?

We're a user-to-user community, so there's no guarantee that an Apple person will see your request. But you can make enhancement requests directly to the Apple folks if you like. Here's a link to the iTunes product feedback form:

  • Making best quality PAL DVD

I have just made a 24 minute TV pilot in Premiere Pro CS4. I exported the pilot as an .avi, then imported it into Nero to author a DVD. However, the video quality on the final DVD was terrible (even though the video quality in the .avi file was fine). I've decided to dump Nero... Nero just got burned.
I am using 4.7GB DVDS. I am going to give Encore a try. What settings should I use in Premiere CS4 and Encore CS4 in order to make the highest possible quality DVD?
The files are in 16:9 format, and as I am in Australia, they are set to PAL.
The DVD will also include a 3 minute film clip as a bonus feature. I want the DVD to have one menu, with the pilot and the extra feature as two seperate buttons. I want a movie file to play in the background of the menu.. is it possible to have a movie in the background of the menu, and if so how?
If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Top Five Feature Requests for vs. 1.1

I love my ATV and it's working pretty well - Clearly there are hundreds features we could use - and want - apparently ANYtime we can expect vs 1.1 (will that be automatic? or do we have to manually stab for it)
Curious as to YOUR top 5 ATV software - "we need it now" feature requests...
    Mine?
    1. Video playlists
    2. 720p content from the ITS
    3. independant music select for different photo slide shows.
    4. smother fast forward rewind - (if this remote can even deal with that)
    5. Separate main menu section for music videos - (like movies, tv shows, etc) - They seem the odd child mixed in with the audio files)
    Fritz
(who just sold the farm to order the new 8 core mac pro - should have it next week - woo FREAKIN' Hoo)

    Rental content!
I'm not one to buy movies/tv-shows. I watch something once, and on very rare occasion twice. If Apple wants more money, they need to figure out how to offer a rental option.
Let me rent a movie for $2 and have 48 hours to watch it from the time I start to watch it (kind of like the failed DIVX when DVD players were new to the market). This way I can start watching it, rewind, pause until the next day (hey, sometimes you get that unexpected phone call and have to stop your movie).
People who want to own a movie will see the value in paying $10 for some movie, and Apple will pick up plenty of revenue from people like me paying $1.99 a pop to rent a movie, cause we aren't buying now, nor ever will.
Renting TV shows could be nice, great way to try out a series you missed. Do something like $0.79+or- to rent an episode of show. Maybe you heard some episode of South Park was hilarious, you missed it, and it won't be repeated until who knows when, but you have no desire to "own" it for $1.99. Cough up 79 cents and you could watch it.
I think there is pent-up demand for something like this, and Apple/Movie-studios could make quite a bit of money by fulfilling this demand.

It would be pretty nice if we could export .idea files into Photoshop Touch as a layer (like a smart object in Illustrator/Photoshop) and link the file so any future edits would be reflected

  • Feature Request where?

Does adobe have a Feature Request area for PP? Where?

    "Curtis Henson:
    Back to "feature" requests?!?"
I would like to see many of the CS4 defaults set to something that is relevant and consistent. For instance, when exporting an avi from the Premiere timeline, Media Encoder defaults to NOT using preview files. You have to remember to change the little drop-down setting every freaking time or else Media Encoder defaults to not using preview files, and the export process can take a ridiculous amount of time. So Premiere currently DOESN'T remember your last export setting related to using or not using preview files when exporting.
Contrast that default with Encore, where yesterday, I used Encore to export a 640x480 Flash review video for a client, I could post on our website. When I returned to Encore, an hour later, I had to use it to create a DVD that was 1 hour and 40 minutes long. The process seemed to take forever. Then I realized that Encore defaulted to the last setting I used which was Flash! So Encore DOES remember your last export setting. Realizing you just wasted a lot of time creating Flash instead of a DVD sucks big time and it's easy to miss it when you're in a hurry.
For clients, being able to easily scrub back and forward through Flash Internet review videos is a huge deal. Currently the only movie control available for Flash exported from Encore is missing this ability/feature.
We have currently been working in SD widescreen NTSC. I have been exporting the DVD mp2's from the Premiere CS4 timeline because for whatever reason, Encore has been lately coming up with an Encode Error when I try to use avi files. For some reason the mp2 DVD export in Media Encoder defaults to the preset Widescreen 23.4 frames per second or something like that, where it changes the frame rate of the video! Please tell me why anyone would want to take a 29FPS video and export it with a reduced frame rate. I did this once a few years ago by accident and the DVD played back like a strobe effect was applied to the entire video! Encoder should default to presets that most closely match the specifications of the loaded avi file.
When you're in a hurry, it's easy to forget to change some of these inappropriate defaults.
