File Association List -- Deleting a Deleted Program

I deleted a text editor that had associated itself with .c, .txt, .cpp, etc and I can't seem to be able to completely remove it from the drop-down list when I go to Get Info->Open With.
The app is gone from the system. How do I get rid of it there? I checked for the plist for LaunchService, but that has apparently moved in 10.6.x.
Thanks

Rebuild LaunchServices Database - this one line command in terminal- cleared all duplicates in +"open with"+ of the get info window.
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Hit return and let the process run it's course, it will put you back out at the prompt when complete, followed by:
killall SystemUIServer

If i restore a user folder from time machine, is it just restoring the files associated with the user or programs as well? Im asking because Apple Store just reset my system and said to restore files i needed and not to do a full restore. to try and determine if it was a software issue causing the problems.

Just the user's folder. Nothing else. See Pondini's TM FAQs, for details.

  • Lost file associations (Not the old version issue) Win 7 & CS5

Something corrupted my installation of CS5 a month or so ago after it had been working correctly and I lost all the image file associations. Photoshop worked fine but only if I directly opened files from within.  Also all the other image packages were missing from the file association list in the Windows 7 file associations tool, not just Photoshop.   Using the Windows tool to find the programmes dot exe file and create an association also locked up at the select the right package phase.
I have fixed this now and my reason for posting is that several previously suggested fixes in both the MS Windows fora and elsewhere on these Adobe forums were either very complicated requiring direct registry editing or didn't work.  It has taken me a while to find a work-around that worked, hence this post.
    1) Firstly - as is stated elesewhere the obvious answer of simply reinstalling Photoshop over the existing copy doesn't work!  Unfortunately it was a while before I found this out, with several time wasting retries of this as a fix attempt.
    2) Not saying this is guaranteed to work in every case but I ran a 3rd party free Registry Cleaner tool, this appears to have fixed the bug in the registry allowing the Windows 7 File Associations tool to work properly again.  Once that was fixed linking up each graphic type was simple.
Reason for posting is I wasted lots of time thinking the issue must have been a legacy from my earlier instal of a trial version of Master Suite or the older Photoshop 7 being replaced even though my CS5 edition had been working Ok for some time. because this is what is given as the usual cause.  However I think in my case it was after loading and then deleting other graphics software, possibly Real Player, which had grabbed the associations and corruped registry settings somehow at uninstall.  It appears registry cleaner restored the corruption and allowed the standard Win 7 tool to work again.
Hope this can help someone else.

First, let me say thanks to John for posting his experience here.  I think that Adobe does a poor job of managing file associations, given that we do hear of a lot of folks who see them get fouled up due to doing normal things like uninstalling earlier versions.
I'd like to ask, though:  Did you try using the Preferences - File Type Associations dialog in Bridge?

A comment on "registry cleaners" in general:
I am a career computer "geek", and yes, Curt's right:  Registry cleaners in general are a terrible idea.  There are a few that encompass some valuable functionality such as deletion of old files from TEMP folders, but that's something one can do on one's own as well.
It's simply impossible for the programmer of a piece of software to know what information can be safely deleted from YOUR file system or YOUR Windows registry, which is a database.
Nor is it necessary to "clean" a registry regularly, as some say, to keep a system working well.  That's hype, propagated by the registry cleaner makers.  I use a system every day that's on the same installation of Windows 7 that first went in at the end of 2009.  It's stable and fast as ever.  I've even done several hardware upgrades and restored the same OS setup using system image backups just to keep the same fully configured, perfectly working system.
Ever hear people claim they have to reinstall Windows every so often?  One of the reasons could well be that they've used a registry cleaner.

  • How to make file associations in XFCE permanent

    Hi,
I have a problem with file associations in XFCE (Thunar, actually), because I can't make it permanent. After setting up, they work fine, but they change to default values after some time.
    Anyone with same problem?:|

is it all file associations? maybe updating certain programs would do it or thunar itself but i seriously doubt it because config should still be the same

  • Change all file associations in get info dialog box

    Hey all,
I got this program called Style Master to edit all of my CSS files. Well, BBEdit was still the app associated with the .css extension. If I used get info (cmd-i), changed the program from BBEdit to Style Master and then selected 'Change All' it would flip back to being associated with BBEdit. Even if I create a new css document in Style Master, it saves with a BBEdit association and icon. Quite annoying.
Any ideas why I can't change the file association from BBEdit to another program?

I believe the prefs associated with this action is: com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. Found in Users/Preferences. Place this file in the trash and retry.

  • Deleting files associated with deleted programs

Long story short, I briefly used Thunderbird to handle my wife's Verizon e-mail account. She decided she didn't like the Mac and continued to use our old PC laptop, so I deleted Thunderbird from the Mac; I thought everything associated with it was deleted too. Now when I type a word associated with that old e-mail address in the spotlight search, e-mails show up and can be opened. Any ideas how to get rid of those?
In the same vein, I downloaded the dropbox application but later deleted it. Now I have a drop box folder that doesn't go away. Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Delete Previous Version - file associations

Have a question on file association problems when deleteing previous version of PS.
For example user bought CS5 and  installed.  File Associations now changed by defauilt to CS5.
If user un-installs CS4, the file associations now revert back to CS4, even though that version is not on computer.
Changing file associations is Bridge and in the OS does not solve file association problem.
One either has to uninstall PS and wipe Adobe files, then re-install latest version, or go into OS registry and make changes.  Registry changes can be difficult for many.
I am sure when CS6 is released we will again have this same scenero, as outlined above, repeated unless the code has been changed.
The question is:  In CS6 will this bug have been eliminated?

Just because it's happend to multiple people doesn't make it not machine or user specific (a problem with user permissions on one computer can happen on another as well). I've never seen this behavior on any of my systems and I have to install and uninstall random versions of the software all the time. The most recently installed version of the software should always have the file type associations, regardless of what versions have been removed.
Have you been able to reproduce the issue on your own machine during testing?

I have deleted any files which reference Mozilla and Firefox from my hard drive and have gone into the Registry and deleted all references to Firefox. But every time I reinstall Firefox the program finds this information. Is it in the sync folder and how do I clear out that folder?

I previously had PS CS5 Trial installed but removed it using both Control Panel Programs and deleting all files from the CS5 directory on Program Files.  I then installed a purchased product from Adobe disc using the serial number on the case.  But when I try to launch it, I get a screen headed Photoshop CS5 Extended Trial.  It asks for the serial number and says that my trial has expired.  It rejects the serial number from the Adobe case saying "This Serial Number is not valid for this product".  It thinks that I still have the expired Trial Version installed.  How do I convince it (the program) that the Trial Version is long gone and the currently installed product was installed with a valid and accepted serial number????

Let me know how it goes. Go into your Adobe account and register your serial number asap.

  • All the tool bars, url box, everything is gone, only blue F-mozilla shows, deleted and reinstalled, even deleted mozilla from program files, reinstalled, still the same, how do I get the original interface back?

I downloaded a freeware prog., scanned it (nothing malicious) and installed, canceled the ask! tool bar add on, but it put it on anyhow. My mozilla had the minimize toolbars buttons, so I minimized every thing to get a full screen, but now I don't have buttons, I don't have anything accept the home page. I deleted mozilla, deleted the program file, reinstalled twice, but still the same messed up opening page with no url, no tool bars, no buttons, nothing... I left scanning the entire computer and am at school....
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Ask! tool bar was added on the browser (even thou I unchecked that option)

Hit the '''Alt''' key to show the Menu bar, then open View > Toolbars and select Menu bar, so it has a check-mark.

  • Can I delete a media cache file that has caused my backup program to fail?

There are 2 Adobe Premere files that are located under App Date, Media Cache files that are causing my backup program to fail. These files were created in August of 2010 and have been backed up successfully many times. However as of Dec 2011 the backup program has failed to complete and the problem has been traced to these two files. I have no idea what the files do but deleting them would be good if it isn't going to affect my Photoshop Elements or premere Elements or my picture files and their location. It appears that the files are tiny clips from music that I may have opened when creating a movie with music to go with the slides. The actual clip of music does not seem to appear in any of the movies I created, which is a bit baffeling. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thank you.

    Hi,
Can you share the name and path of the files?
Are you talking about Mediadatabase.db3 file present at: application data\adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0Locale\en_US? If yes, you can delete this file. When you launch Photoshop Elements the next time, this file will automatically get created for you.
    Thanks

  • StarOffice 8 deletes file associations

I have installed Star Office 8 on two Window XP computers. During the installation I selected S08 to open Microsoft Office documents. Then I view the .doc, .xls and .ppt files in the explorer are they shown with a StarOffice icon and if I double-click on one is the StarOffice registration wizard opened. After I have accepted the license is explorer restarted and now is the .doc shown with another icon. If I double-click this icon is the file opened in WordPad. If I switch to another user on the same computer does the same thing happen. I know how to reassociate the files types to be opened with StarOffice but this is still a bug.
If I look in "Folder Options" "File types" is the DOC registered as a Microsoft Word document and opened with StarOffice 8. But after the registration wizard are the registrations gone.
This is a real problem in a computer lab there the students expect the program to be opened with StarOffice and will get WordPad instead.
Anybody know a solution to this problem

I came across the same problem on windows XP SP2 machines.
I created a registry key that forces the file associations as follows:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\shell]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\shell\open]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\shell\open\command ]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Sun\\StarOffice 8\\program\\soffice.exe\" \"%1\""
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.xls\shell]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.xls\shell\open]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.xls\shell\open\command ]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Sun\\StarOffice 8\\program\\soffice.exe\" \"%1\""
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ppt\shell]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ppt\shell\open]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ppt\shell\open\command ]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Sun\\StarOffice 8\\program\\soffice.exe\" \"%1\""

  • Different program file associations in GNOME Trash folder

So, for example, I've set up GNOME to run all *.avi files with mplayer. Now if I delete an *.avi file to a Trash folder and run it from there Banshee is used as a default associated program. In fact, mplayer is not in the "Open With..." sub-menu (only in Properties for this file but it is ignored anyway as I just described.)
I've no idea why GNOME acts this way but I can provide some background information that might help pinpointing the real issue here. I first ran KDE on my Arch Linux setup. Somewhere along the way I decided to try GNOME and so I installed it alongside with KDE. When I first ran GNOME I had many files associated with KDE's programs (torrent files for instance).
I'm relatively new to GNOME and maybe I should've clicked some magic button that re-creates an index of file association for GNOME but so far I haven't discovered one
So, what can be done about this issue?

Anyone having a trouble like that?

  • Subroutine inconsistency due to deletion of Include program

    Hi All,
I created an include program(saved in local object) within my report(this was previously stored in a package) and I copied a few performs and forms from my report into the include program, but then i decided to go for the code without the include and commented the include statement in my report and deleted the include program(in se38). But now when I click on the perform statement in my report it gives a message "Object ZXY not found". The ZXY is my include program. Also when I view the report in se80 I find repetitive sub routines. Also I am not able to delete the duplicate sub routines in se80.
How can we overcome this inconsistency in duplication of subroutines, how to suppress the message and make sure the code is consistent?

    Hi,
So currently all the performs in program are part of some other include which is part of your main program?Because if not , obviously an error will be thrown.
Have you tried the option of rebuilding object  list for the whole program?
Right click on the program name in SE80--> Other functions->Rebuild object List
