File associations / sandboxed app.

http://www.1point1c.org/spacesim/spacesim.jnlp
Points to the launch file for a sandboxed
application (<150 Kb download) that claims
(OK suggests) file associations for two
file types '.sss' (space simulation scenarios)
& '.sso' (space simulation options).
( There are ways to export/create these file types,
but you can get the default '.sss' file here
http://www.1point1c.org/spacesim/spacesim-data.zip )
By claiming the file assocation, the Space Simulator
needs to provide '-open fileName' functionality in the
main(), which it does.
But there is a quirky aspect to it when running
in Java 1.5 - if the user double clicks a '.sss' file,
- they are asked ny the plug-in if they want to
proceed - with the offer to
|_|   Do not show this advisory again- The user selects that and clicks 'Yes' (open)
- The GUI appears with the file selected.
..But! JWS does not remember that the user
selected always allow, and asks them again
(& again, & again..)
Do you want to allow this action? Is that defined behaviour for a sandboxed
application?
Do the full privileges applications behave
differently (i.e. remember when the user
selects always allow)?
Is it just my system/Java version,
(I'm running Win XP Pro, Java 1.5.0_09)
does it work on other combinations?

...I'm prompted with a dialog to allow the app to
read the file and I click allow always.
I then get a file chooser where I have to select the
file again. I see that as a separate problem.
Again - I do not know if it is intended behaviour,
but it makes no sense to force the user to identify
the file a second time.
...Is that part of the app or a webstart
problem? Incidently, clicking cancel on this file
chooser puts the app in a state where I need to kill
it.Oops! Sorry, I had been meaning to fix that.
...But I think the always allow means that
webstart will allow the app to open and read the file
as many times as the app needs too during the
execution of the app, not on subsequent
invocations. At first I was sceptical, but a few further tests*
seem to support what you are saying.
* Using the menus within the application that
also open files, after selecting 'remember
my decision', at first file 'double-click open', I
did not get further prompts, though usually
I do.
My investigations are continuing, but here it is
partly complicated by getting different versions
of web-start depending upon whether I double
click the desktop launch icon (1.6), or an
associated file (1.5) - the advisory dialogs
seems different as well.
Thanks, I think you have effectively answered
my question, but I'll mull it over some more..

  • How to identify files associated with apps?

    Hello all -
I am considering buying a new Mac mini which would come with Yosemite.  My existing mini (mid 2011, Lion 10.7.5) has a lot of apps I do not wish to migrate, so I think I am stuck with manually reinstalling each of the apps I want on the new computer.  How do I identify the necessary files associated with these apps (preferenes, app support, etc.) so I can copy them over after reinstalling on the new computer?  Is there any way to track what files were installed along with the app when it was first installed?  Anyone familiar with the claim of CleanApp to log all associated files with an installation (at time of install), or any other software that does this?
       Thanks - Randy

Thanks again Arthur for your response.  I looked at RoaringApps but was not sure if I should enable the real time or just use basic.  Real time seems to require a lot of downloading (and modification?)   What do you recommend - Real TIme or Basic?
As far as SunnyMenu, it is old but has worked flawlessly through and including Lion 10.7.5.  The only alteration of the system is that it is added as a startup item in my User in System Preferences.  It does not change the GUI, but adds menus (that you can customize) in addition to, rather than changing what System X does.  The Dock will not accomodate nearly as many items and SunnyMenu allows for nested subfolders of menu items.  I find it extremely useful and use it every day. I realize one day it will no longer work, but hope that, as it's pretty simple, that may be a bit further off.  As a rule I don't dabble in System modifiying stuff like maintenance, clean-up, speed-up, "optimization" etc. and just rely on System X.  I do have iStat Menus, but I don't believe that's modifying the System, but only displays information.  RoaringApps seems to indicate it's compatible with everything through Yosemite.  Would you recommend against that as well?  It saved me once when my fan failed but I noticed the iStat temp & rpm display and got it repaired at my Apple Store before I completely toasted my mini.
Thanks again for your replies, they have been extrmely helpful in understanding how to start planning my move to a new Mac mini with Yosemite!

  • File Associations to network shared virtual app?

We often use application virtualization for larger apps that would take too long to install via msi. We put those large virtual apps on a network share and users launch them from there rather than installing them locally. It's worked well for us, but we miss out on some features, like file associations, context menus, etc. We could get most of these features back if created in msi in ZAV when we create the virtual app, but the msi always installs the virtual app to Program Files, which defeats the purpose for us.
So my question: Is there a way we can create an MSI that behaves just like the one generated by ZAV, but rather than installing the .exe to Program Files and pointing everything there, it instead does not install the exe at all and just points everything to the already existing exe on the shared drive?
We tend to be a bit of a unique use case, but I was hoping someone else had run into a similar problem.
    Thank you!

Perhaps just running "Assoc.exe", "DISM", or a simple REG file with the
association settings you want would work.

  • Associating custom app with all files of certain extension

I have an applescript which I saved as an application. I want all files with the .url extension to be opened with this app.
If I drag+drop a .url file onto the app's icon, it opens with the app. I can also associate a single file with this app using Finder->Get Info and with RCDefaultApp. However, when I try to associate all .url files with this app, the old app immediately gets reselected. This happens both in Finder and RCDefaultApp.
How can I get the association to work for all .url files?

Perhaps I didn't explain correctly. I go to a .url file and Get Info. Under Open With I browse to my new application (with Always Open With checked) and click ok. Now the info window says Open with: my new app. If I stop here, then this single file will be associated with my app. However, I then click Change All and Continue and now the info window says Open with: Safari. This is the part I meant when I said that it immediately changes back when I try to change all.
Alternately, using RCDefaultApp: I open RCDefaultApp, click on the Extensions tab, and select url. Default Application is Safari. If I change it to Firefox, it stays on Firefox. As opposed to if I select the app I made. If I do this, it flickers as if my app was selected for a moment then the selection reverts to what it was before I selected my app.

  • Ability to add multiple apps to Open With file associations

It would be extremely helpful if Bridge's "file association" dialog allowed one to associate multiple applications with a file type, so the Open With function worked like Lightroom's Edit In function which allows the use of multiple external editors.  As it is currently designed, only one new "default" association can be changed/added.   A current list of other available "editors" also appears in the Open With context menu, but it is unclear (at least to me) where that list comes from because there are some pretty strange entries in the list for any specific file type.
    Thanks

Agreed -- I've always been curious as to what random generator Bridge uses to assign programs with file types.

  • Did JWS prompt for file associations in 1.5?

I have a vague memory of running a sandboxed app. that claims file associations, and being pleased to see a prompt asking whether I (as a user) actually wanted to make the file association.
That was in 1.5. I just tried the same app. again in 1.6 (it is my [sandboxed demo of the JNLP API file services|http://pscode.org/jws/filetest-sandbox.jnlp]) and although I was prompted for 'desktop integration' (it also suggests a desktop shortcut) there was no prompt for the file association.
You can get the build files at the [page that describes the file service|http://pscode.org/jws/api.html#fs].
Is my memory faulty? Has there been a change in the way file associations are handled?
    Edit 1:
I forgot to add. The file type claimed is '.zzz'. A normal '.txt' file renamed to '.zzz' will open in my little demo just fine (tested it just then). So the file association is successful, it is just that I was not prompted, that bothers me.

I have exactly the same issue affecting InDesign and Illustrator. Photoshop had the same issue but it allowed you to set the default program. It seems the only way to do it is to open the program and open the document from there. This is a complete pain!

  • File associations: filename not passed in args with JWS on OS X?

Hi -- I have a working JWS-deployed app, which sets up a file association for a specific MIME type. Double-clicking a file with the specified extension works fine on win32, with args[0] being set to -open, and args[1] to the file path to open.
But on OS X, J2SE 5.0, although the JWS app starts, the args[] array is empty (and hence I have no way to know what datafile was double-clicked to start the app, and hence to open it!). Is this a known problem on OS X? I can't find any reference to this issue anywhere. This is on a MacPro Intel box, haven't tried on another Mac yet, but I assume this is a general issue? JWS is version 11.4.2.
    Thanks for any tips... D

...on OS X, J2SE 5.0, although the JWS app
starts, the args[] array is empty I cannot immediately answer your question, I have my
own thread going, asking questions about JWS handling
of file associations for a sandboxed application.

As it is, I would appreciate a test result for OS X.
Does my app. also break on OS X under 1.5?
(you might need to see it 'work' under win to
answer that - it is quite quirky).
OTOH, the strategy I take with the sandboxed application,
might be the one to follow for OS X if you cannot get the
    second argument.
Open a file chooser, pointing at "user.dir" (in the vague
hope that points in the right direction) and explain to
the user that between them double clicking the file,
and 'now' (about 20 ms. later, on most systems) the
    information was 'lost'.

  • File associations in Windows 8.1 for applications on a network location

    Hi,
From Windows 7 to Windows 8 it has been done alot of changes regarding file file assocations. It seem that the main reason was security and was "patched" by having Windows read the hash for the applications instead of where the application was
    located.
but there seem to be some major hicups and there is limited info on the web covering these issues.
First issue: when running:  Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:\\Server\Share\AppAssoc.xml and then creating a GPO configuration pointing to
thi XML file.  With this feature only common file extensions is supported and when users are changing to another computer, these settings is not possible to syncronize using roaming profiles.
Second issue: In the appassoc.xml file applications must be either appid(metro app) or common application on local harddrive to be registered and not a .EXE
    file on a network location.
It seems a little strange if this is the case and if there is no other options for administratos to set file associations in more flexible ways. Does anyone have some more info on
this topic other than these link:

    https://keithga.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/file-associations-in-windows-8/

    Hi Primeid,
You could use Group policy for file associations or you could deploy the xml file during image deployment. However as you mentioned that the file associations only applies to common application on local hard drive or metro app.

We understand your confusion about this, but we hope you understand that using network location for file association deployment is highly insecure and it is out of our recommendation since the content in that network location could be changed without any
    notification or permissions constraint.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2: Different file associations when double-clicking vs. right-click - open

I have a basic .xml file on my Windows 2008 R2 desktop. I have set the file association for .xml files to Adobe FrameMaker 12. When I double-click the .xml file, it opens with FrameMaker. When I right-click -> open the .xml file, it opens with Notepad.
I need the .xml file to always open with FrameMaker, even when I use right-click -> open. How can I set this up for all users on a Windows 2008 R2 server?
    Thank you!
    -Nicole

    Hi Nicole,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
When you double-click on a file in Windows explorer, the Windows shell looks up the extension of the file in the registry to see if the extension is registered. If the extension is not registered, Windows displays the Open With dialog box, allowing the
user to choose an application to associate with the file type. If the extension is registered, Windows calls the ShellExecute() function with a command of "open." It also passes the name of the file that was double-clicked as a command line parameter.
Associations go further than simply opening a file, though. If you right-click on a text file (.TXT) in Explorer you will see two items at the top of the context menu. The first is named Open. Choosing this menu item is the same as double-clicking the
file in Explorer. When you choose Open, NOTEPAD.EXE will be started with the selected file loaded (assuming a default Windows installation). The second menu item is called Print. Clicking this menu item will cause the file to be printed without displaying
    Notepad at all.
There is some registry setting for the application association to take place, you can edit them under following path.
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Test App File

  • GNOME and KDE file associations

    Hi,
I like to use KDE and GNOME, alternating between them. Sounds crazy, but I like both. Please, let's avoid the "GNOME vs. KDE" discussion, right?
My problem is: I like to use different file associations when I'm using GNOME or KDE. For example, I'd like to associate text files with gedit in GNOME and with Kate in KDE. But if I associate text files to gedit in GNOME, when I run KDE and open a text file it opens gedit. If I associate them with Kate in KDE, when I'm using GNOME it'll use Kate as its text editor.
Some time ago I could have both desktop environments without this mess. Can I have this behaviour back?

Yeah, I got tired of Evolution not knowing about opening *.docs in openoffice.  After several hours of research, the key is the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache,  /opt/gnome/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, and the MimeType fields in the *.desktop files.  The mimeinfo.cache in /usr was empty and the /opt one had gthumb and other apps but no OO:
    [MIME Cache]
    application/x-gnome-stones=gnome-stones.desktop
    image/jpeg=gthumb.desktop
    application/postscript=ggv.desktop
    ...snip...
That's a lot of blather to say that the fix for Evolution/OpenOffice was to add the proper MimeType entry to /usr/share/applications/ooo645writer.desktop:
    MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word;application/msword
and then run "update-desktop-database".  Problem solved.
Another problem is that within Evolution it says an attached doc is a "application/msword" and not a "Microsoft Word Document".  Unfortunately this is because freedesktop.org decided to use application/vnd.ms-word instead of application/msword like the rest of the world.  If you check the vnd.ms-word entry in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml it defines an alias msword but the new mime system doesn't appear to recognize aliases yet.  The solution I used was to rename the entry to msword.  Another possible solution might be to remove the msword alias from the vnd.ms-word entry and create a new msword entry based on the vnd.ms-word one.  Then run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime".  Hope that made sense.
I think the defaults.list is part of the previous GNOME MIME setup cause I don't have one and I'm not experiencing any problems.  For other apps check for the associations in the mimeinfo.cache's and if missing add the MimeType's to the app's *.desktop.

  • Problems with Folder view settings and file association in Windows 8.1

My Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder. So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example, whenever
I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view. And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop. It drives me crazy, especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example
i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared
    again.
    I tried scanning SFC
    Scan with no result.
I hope I will get a fix here.
    Thanks.
Update:I also just discovered that Metro apps are not working...what the heck its wrong with my windows.

Hey thanks for the reply ,but I got a fix for everything.Apparently the problem is in the registry.
So If the problem began recently, you can try this to fix it :
Press Windows Key + R to show the Run box, type RSTRUI and press enter.
Choose a recent date and time from before the problem beginning (such as the day before yesterday) and click Next.
The system will restore registry settings from that day, and restart.
If you do this however, all the programs you had installed after the restore point date will
be DELETED   (same with any settings changes made before that date),so be sure to backup things.Hope this will help someone someday. .

  • Default file associations in linux?

    Hi,
I quit using KDE and among other glitches, most of my programs have lost their knowledge of file associations or have very odd ideas about them. For example, opera thinks that gimp is the default program for pdf files on my machine. Thunderbird has forgotten all the associations except the ones I've set in thunderbird itself, and if I remember it right, some KDE app was always popping up suggesting a file type. (I think it was kmfclient...)
Anyways, isn't there a way to manage file types on a lower level? I've been reading that the kernel itself supports mime types since 2.2. I'm not using a DE anymore and I'd need some sort of lightweight handler to open programs accordingly.
So where are file associations handled in linux? Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

File associations are a mess right now. Many programs (Opera included) handle them their own way. There's a project underway to handle associations in a standard way (see MIME actions, shared MIME info, desktop entries, all at freedesktop.org), but not all software uses it; KDE is a notable holdout (3 at least, not sure about 4).
Note that that first spec link, MIME actions, is currently "in the requirements-gathering / early-planning stages." That means there is no spec for that. As I said, a mess.
Most likely, Opera and Thunderbird detected you were running KDE and special-cased their association-finder to ask KDE instead. Now that you aren't, they're falling back to their normal behavior: use the first .desktop file to claim the MIME type. As I recall, both applications offer ways to specify associations in their preferences; you might just want to stick to that for now. Or use a desktop environment.
The kernel-level MIME support is designed to allow execution of strange files using interpreters. For example, you could directly execute Windows applications (as in "./notepad.exe") by setting the kernel to "interpret" application/exe files using wine. No applications use it for opening files.

  • How to add osd file into app-v package - need to have two osd files within one app-v package

We have app-v 4.6 sp2 I get one app-v existing package which has two OSD files associated.
It is needed for separate license servers located in different sites. I need to create a new app-v package with new version of this application and want to have similar two OSD files associated with it. How to do it?

Using Notepad for creating a new copy of an OSD is OK, but requires some thinking:
Inside the new OSD, the NAME= and/or VERSION= attribute should be modified: you shall not have two applications with the same Name+Version combination
the name of the new OSD file should be added to .sprj file (similar to the original OSD file name) as this motivates the Sequencer to load both OSDs when opening the package
inside the OSD in the <MGMT_SHORTCUTLIST> section the name of the shortcut file (.lnk) shopuld be adjusted
The new OSD won't get added to the MSI (if you are using that) unless you open & save the package in the Sequencer.
Sorry Dan, but except for super-professionals I'd advise
    Use GridMetric
Application Virtualization Explorer to add/modify shortcuts (you'd need the Professional Edition for App-V 4)
    or
If you already have the package with just one OSD: select the 'Modify an existing packge' in the Sequencer, then use the 'Add
Application' wizard. Quite at the end this will bring you to the 'shortcuts and file type associations' step. In there you can create a new shortcut (resulting in a new OSD). Other wizards make it more difficult (or impossible) to add shortcuts: https://kirxblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/01/app-v-4-6-sp1-the-right-sequencing-wizard/

  • File associations lost from ftp servers

Whenever I move files to an ftp server, the file associations are lost if there are no extensions on those files.
Mac OSX knew what it was when I put it on the server but when it comes back, finder has no idea what to do with it. I.e. a quicktime doc mymovie (with no .mov exension) still had the blue Q icon when I moved it up there, but when I pull it down, it looks like a plain blank sheet and double clicking yields "There is no default application specified to open the document "mymovie".
Checking the file head in terminal reveals creator and type are still there, so how do I get OSX's finder to use those? If OS9 could do it, there must be a way for OSX to!!!

Thanks Jeffery - you are right, type and creator were in fact lost.
