File browse/upload explanation

Hi,
I have seen the howto about the file upload appliation that's written for 1.5. <http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/htmldb/howtos/howto_file_upload.html> I do understand it reads the selected file into some default table and that it get's some ID that should be used to reference it. What is the recommended way to move such a file to a user table ?
Will the howto be rewritten for htmldb 1.6 ?
thanks,
Ronald.

Hello,
The screenshots and instructions on where to click should be updated but the code will remain the same. There's a section in the How To which talk about moving the BLOB to a custom table look for "Store the Document in a Custom Table"

  • File Browse Validation not stopping upload

    Hi Guys,
    I am using Apex 4.0 and need help with the following please:
    I have a file browse item which uploads a file into the built in WWV_FLOW_FILES. The problem is it uploads even when there is an error and my validation flags up.
    Is it supposed to, does anyone no a work around? Basically I dont want the end user to upload the same file more than once.

    I have a file browse item which uploads a file into the built in WWV_FLOW_FILES. The problem is it uploads even when there is an error and my validation flags up. Is it supposed to...Yes. The file data is just the same as any other form value, and has to be submitted and held in session state (in this case in <tt>APEX_APPLICATION_FILES</tt>) before APEX can do anything with it:
    {thread:id=902770}
    Basically I dont want the end user to upload the same file more than once.You'll have to perform some kind of validation check for this and if it fails, delete the unwanted file:

  • Checking filename length in File Browse item before uploading

    I have a File Browse item from which users can upload files into the database. Within APEX, the file metadata and content first get uploaded into the view WWV_FLOW_FILES. By design apparently, the underlying table for this view has a NAME field which is limited to 90 characters. I would like to test the length of the Name field and provide a warning to the user if the name exceeds 90 characters, but any validation I write to that effect does not "fire" until after the file has been uploaded to the WWV_FLOW_FILES view. That attempt to upload apparently is the first thing that happens when you Submit with a File Browse item, even before the validation. If the name of the file exceeds 90 characters in length, the attempted upload errors out with a generic Page Not Found error. Is there any way to capture the length of the Name of the file with a File Browse item prior to the attempt to upload to the WWV_FLOW_FILES view, or is my only option just to put a warning banner on the page?

    Hello Mike,
    >> Column NAME in WWV_FLOW_FILES is VARCHAR2(90). It does not include the local filename path. It include a prefix like "F1521676842/" in the front of the filename.
    Yes, you are correct. I spoke from memory, and it seems that I remembered one of my customized tables, where I also save the local full path of the file.
    As far as I can see in my system, the extension of the ‘F123….’ is not with a fix length, and the highest one is 18 characters long. Therefore, it seems that the actual file name should be less than 70 characters long.
    A similar code to the following can be used in a validation check:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function checkFileName(pThis){
      if (pThis.value != "") {
         //get path value (including file name)
         var fileAndPath = pThis.value;
         //find the index of the last "\"
         var lastPathDelimiter = fileAndPath.lastIndexOf("\\");
        //get everything after the last "\"
        var fileNameOnly = fileAndPath.substring(lastPathDelimiter+1);
        if (fileNameOnly.length >70) {
          alert("File name " + fileNameOnly +
              " is too long (" + fileNameOnly.length + " characters).");
          pThis.focus();
    </script>The “HTML Form Element Attributes” of the item should include:
    onblur=" checkFileName(this)"

    Arie.

  • Customize File Browse...upload many files at once

    Hi,
    I've searched the forums and this appears to not be possible using the HTMLDB app builder. Some threads I searched include :
    Upload Multiple Files
    Basically, our testing machine will create a folder for each test, inside of which are many files always with the same name. It'd be nice if the user only had to select either the folder, or one file in the folder, and any other files needed in that folder would be automatically uploaded by either HTMLDB or some custom code.
    There were some links as to how the guts of the File Browse... does it's thing in adding files to the flow_files table, but many of the links were dead. Java script can do some custom error checking, but how about behind-the-scenes multiple file loading?
    Just curious if this has been implemented. Running Oracle 9.2.0.4, HTMLDB 1.6.1.00.02.
    Thanks much,
    Matt

    Matt,
    I'm not aware of any way to do this using HTML and Javascript only running in a browser. As such, I don't know of a way to do this using HTML DB. Thing is, web browsers take great care to protect your file system from Javascript running behind the scenes.

  • File names aren't shown in file browser when uploading or downloading documents

    When I try to upload or download a document, on various websites, the file browser window that pops up has no file names or any other information other than the icons. Mousing over a file brings up the size, date modified etc but not the file name. If I right-click the icon and open up the file properties, all the information is there except the file name, which is blank. Changing the view (list vs icons, for instance) changes nothing. Am using Firefox 35 and Windows 8. Problem did not occur with earlier versions of Firefox.

    In order to better assist you with your issue please provide us with a screenshot. If you need help to create a screenshot, please see [[How do I create a screenshot of my problem?]]

    Thank you!
    When the window comes up, what view are you using? Have you

    As noted, this confuses the issue, since a possible answer was posted in the OTHER thread.. Check your server logs, you are probably timing out.. From prior threads with a similar issue:
    Have a look at the httpd.conf file (or get your system administrator to look at it) and see what the value of TimeOut is set to. You may need to increase it in order to export large tables via APEX.

  • File Browser (without uploading)

    Hi,
    I need to implement a Browse button, that will allow the user to choose a file from his local computer.
    I know that there is a UI Element called FileUpload that enable choosing a file and uploading it from the client to the server, but I don't need the upload operation.
    all I need is the user to choose a file and I want to know the name of the file that he chose.
    thanks in advance, Adi

    hello Adi,
    u can use the Upload UIE for this. onAction event in the implementation u dont create the file ( i mean dont write the upload file code) instead u just take the file name and print it. u wont get the whole path of the file, jsut the name with extention. i hope u know how to use Upload UIE.
    regards,
    Piyush.

  • Restricting length of file name of the file to be uploaded in file browse.

    Hi,
    I have got a file browse item. When the file name is more than 74 characters, it goes to an error page. Can this be avoided?
    To prevent this, I tried using a javascript
    function doSubmitWithProgress()
    if (document.getElementById('P202_FILE_INPUT').value.length > 70){
    alert('File name should be less than 70 characters in length.');
    object.focus();
    else
    {$x_Hide('wwvFlowForm');
    $x_Show('InProgress');
    doSubmit('UPLOAD_FILE');
    But this is considering the path of the file as well and hence causing an issue.
    So could you please help me out with this issue.
    If there is a way to avoid going to error page if file name is big that would be great. Otherwise, if there is a way to check just the length of the file name and trigger an alert if it is more than 70 characters, that would help me too.
    Thanks,
    Vignesh

    The issue is that this code
      // Now create an array that contains the individual pieces of
      // the file name split on the "/" boundaries
      var myArray  = fileName.split('/');has the wrong path separator for Windows. Use backslash instead:
      // Now create an array that contains the individual pieces of
      // the file name split on the "\" boundaries
      var myArray  = fileName.split('\\');double backslash is necessary because '\' is the JavaScript escape character, so it needs to be doubled to indicate that that is the character we want.
    However, also be aware that for security/privacy reasons recent versions of browsers do not expose the file path via the .value method. Firefox, Safari and Chrome only provide the filename. IE6 & IE7 yield the path in Windows format. IE8 and Opera, in an effort not to "break the web" (i.e. to bend over backwards to keep poorly coded and non-interoperable Windows sites working) have adopted an irritating approach of replacing the path with a wholly imaginary "C:\fakepath\".
    So your validation may have to cope with up to 3 scenarios, depending on the browsers that need to be supported: only get the filename (FF/Safari/Chrome); get the full path (IE6/7/8 in some security configurations/older versions of all browsers); get a fake path (Opera/IE8 in other security configurations).

  • Possible to set the Created_by column value for File Browse?

    I'm using database account authentication and then a user gets to upload a file. Then my stored procedure reads the file. I was investigating a problem, happened to search the apex_workspace_files view and noticed the created_by column is always set to APEX_PUBLIC_USER for the files my users upload. Is there some way I can set that value when they log in, so I can track who actually did the upload?
    Thanks,
    Stew

    Dimitri,
    I was just using the standard File Browse item, so getting the blob from the workspace view. Though I've seen notes here about loading to your own table, what I had seemed to work (and was done) fairly well. There were just these little features I wanted to use...
    Thanks for the suggestion.
    Dave, I'm not sure which stored procedure you're suggesting I add the apex_custom_auth.get_username value to? I hoped that the internal File Browse routine would pick up the get_username value automatically instead of the application definition Public User value.
    Thanks,
    Stew

  • Open Cursor Issue because of file browse Item - Is this a Bug in APEX 3.2

    Hi All,
    I am using file browse Item to upload file into the database at two places in my application, but it seems whenever I am submitting those two pages, with file path or without file path, its opening an cursor which remains open after that, because of this open cursor count in the application is getting exceeding every time.
    For testing this I have made an dummy page containing just file browse item and submit button, and still it is increasing the open cursor count.
    Is this a bug in Apex file browse item or there is some other way to handle this.
    Please kindly help me in the above issue as this is affecting the production application.

    Hi,
    One observation, Apex is switching the Session ID after one got killed ? I was working on Apex page with browse Item to test open cursor count,
    after killing the SID (227) on which the open cursor count was getting increase, it APEX automatically switches to new SID(149) for that session.
    Now the problem is even if I have two SID's and one hits the maximum open cursor count, It is not switching to other SID instead the whole application becomes unavailable.

  • How to populate DB column with filename from file browse item?

    Hi,
    Using APEX 3.1.2, I'm trying to easily allow maintenance of a filename stored in a DB column (VARCHAR2(1000)). Using the column as a file browse item seemed to be the way to go, but of course I don't want the resulting file to be uploaded and it appears as though an existing filename is not shown in a form when the row is retrieved.
    After much searching, I found Checking filename length in File Browse item before uploading , but I'm not able to connect the dots. I was thinking that I could create a hidden file browse item and use a button to call Javascript function to activate it, then save the resulting filename to my DB column item and wipe out the hidden item before it was uploaded. But the hidden item doesn't appear, so I'm not able to reference it's form input name.
    Hopefully this mess makes sense. Anyone?
    Thanks!

    Hi John,
    From what I can tell, the path of a local file browsed from a file browse item cannot be retrieved because of security concerns. Although, it seems that while Firefox 3 only returns the filename sans directory, IE6 returns the full path:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en" dir="ltr">
    <head><title>Form Test</title>
    </head><body>
    <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
    function GetDirectory()
    strFile = document.FileForm.filename.value;
    intPos = strFile.lastIndexOf("\\");
    strDirectory = strFile.substring(0, intPos);
    alert(strDirectory);
    document.FileForm.Directory.value = strDirectory;
    </script>
    <form id="FileForm" name="FileForm">
    <input type="file" id="filename" name="filename" value="" onChange="GetDirectory(this.value)">
    <input type="hidden" id="Directory" name="Directory" value="">
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>
    This Win-specific code displays the path via IE6, but not in Firefox 3. Then again, I can't seem to preview posts here using FF3, either...

    Changing IE's security config setting “Include local directory path when uploading files” enables the path to be exposed in IE8, but unless you're working in an intranet environment where: IE is the only browser used; it's possible to make remote changes to this setting on every desktop; and this won't break/expose anything else, then trying to achieve this is pointless.
