File Error 8 when saving an ini file in C:\Program Files\ without Admin rights

I have built my LabVIEW 7.0 Functional Tester software into an application. During install I use a batch file to copy the limits.ini file to the install directory (Usually C:\Program Files\Wellington\ )
If I log in as administrator (Windows 2k) LabVIEW can write to limits.ini OK. However without Administrator rights LabVIEW can't modify this file (using the Configuration File vi’s) - it returns File Permission Error 8. (It can read the file).
1. Is there a way around this without manually hacking the registry?
2. I tend to put my ini files for my LabVIEW software in the same directory as the LabVIEW exe file. Should I be using a different location (eg the \data directory)?
3. The reason I do not include the *.ini file in the installer is that I can modify it without having to rebuild the app. Instead I get the installer to run a batch file that copies *.ini files from the source directory to the install directory.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Give the particular user write access to that directory.

For newer OSes like Unix, and Windows 2k or better yes it would be a
good idea. Unix typically uses a . file in the home directory
of the user. Another idea would be to create a known directory inside
the home directory and put all it's data files there.
LabVIEW 7.0 has a new VI to return the user data directory.

This will only work when you work on the same machine as you developed
it (or at least the same network).

  • "couldn't save media file" error when saving

    I'm using Keynote 2.0.2 and for some reason, it won't let me save my presentation when it includes a 3.3Gb quicktime .mov file.
    The presentation runs perfectly on my laptop, but when I save, the spinning ball appears and then I get this:
    "The following errors occurred while trying to save this document:
    Couldn't save media file - week3edit.mov"
    This is driving me nuts, especially as I can insert exactly the same .mov file into a PowerPoint presentation and have it save no problem!
    What could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    Barry

    Use only numbers or letters in the file name. I've
    seen failures in files that use even simple
    punctuation. Cynthia's sound.mov should be
    cynthias_sound.mov.
    The other issue could be "protected" files. You can't
    share iTunes Music Store files. If the file extension
    is .m4p the file is protected.
    These are .mp4 files that I converted. No copyright issues. And there is a space in the file name, but there are in all the other file names as well.
    Weird, huh?

  • File error when saving for web

    When trying to save a file for web (png) it says that the operation could not be completed because the file not found and will not save. Why is this?

    Hi Suki,
    I have described the "problem" in detail on my blog today, and prescribed a solution as well. Let me know if this solves your problem!

  • Error when Saving Files  ID=-39

    We are using CS5 on iMac and get the following error when saving:
    Can't save preview, but all other information was saved successfully. The file ended unexpectedly. Try using a backup copy. ID = -39
    Generally after receiving this error the file is corrupt.
    What can we do?  Do you need more info?  I am not sure what to do with this error.

    Most probably that is your problem.
    Try if saving to your hard disk solves your problem.

  • Float4() causes "error saving Pixel Bender Byte Code file" error when exporting for flash player

    Simple test
    <languageVersion : 1.0;>
    kernel untitled
    <   namespace : "Your Namespace";
        vendor : "Your Vendor";
        version : 1;

        input image4 src;
        output pixel4 dst;
        void
        evaluatePixel()
            dst = float4(sampleNearest(src, outCoord()));
    The above code will produce a "error saving Pixel Bender Byte Code file" error when exporting for flash player in Pixel Bender Toolkit 2.5.449694.
    "dst = (sampleNearest(src, outCoord()));" works fine. And anything like "float4 a= float4(b);" will give same error.

    Thank you for the error report.  I'll put it into our bug database.  We're bottling things up for the current version.  Gven the workaround, it is unlikely we'll be addressing this bug soon.  Please accept my apologies for the annoyance this will cause.
    In your second example, float4 a = float4(b), does it return an error if b is only a float4 or regardless of what b is?  If b is a scalar float, for example, is the conversion performed correctly? If so, this could be an error that only crops up when using constructor/conversion syntax when the thing being converted is already the correct type.
    Thanks,
    Chuck.

  • Unable to display tree view; Error when parsing an XML document (Premature end of file.)

    Hi folks,
    I am using a cascaded mapping in my OM. I have a graphical mapping followed by the Java mapping. It is a flat file to IDOC mapping. Everything works fine in Dev but when I transport the same objects to QA, the Operation mapping though it doesn't fail in ESR testing tool, gives the following message and there is no output generated for the same payload which is successfully tested in DEV. Please advise on what could be the possible reasons.
    Unable to display tree view; Error when parsing an XML document (Premature end of file.)

    kalyan,
    There seems to be an invalid xml payload which causes this error in ESR not generating the tree view. Please find the similar error screenshot and rectify the payload.

  • In aperture 3.4.5, I get unsupported file error when exporting version of photo I've edited using plugins?

    In aperture 3.4.5, I get unsupported file error when exporting version of photo I've edited using plugins. I have try reinstalling aperture three times, deleting plists a few times, reinstalling plugins, restarting my MacBook Pro many times. Everything I've tried may fix the problem for a very short while and I can export a few photos before it returns. The problem happens with topaz and photomatrix pro plugins after I edited and try to export version.

    I had the same problem with the Photomatix plug-in and this solved it for me. I realised it only happened with Photomatix and not other plug-ins so I checked where the plug-ins were installed. The Photomatix plug-in was installed in
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
    where ~ is the home location for the current user account. All the other plug-ins however were installed in
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
    which is the location that makes them available to all user accounts on your Mac. Moving the Photomatix plug-in to this location solved the problem for me.
    Note that the Library directory under the first location is normally hidden, to get to it hold down the Option (Alt) key and select it from the Finder Go menu.

  • How do you turn off the "Update Template Files" dialog when saving a template in Dreamweaver?

    As the title states I'd like to not have to see the "Update Template Files" dialog when saving a template.  I'm not sure what its purpose is other than to annoy as it does not seem to do anything  -- selecting update, don't update, any combination of files and or hitting escape appears not to make any difference wrt wheter it updates the pages or not (it does every time).
    Any help will be appreciated.

    The "more like this" window gave me the answers.  No current ability to turn off.  I've submitted a request to add this feature.

  • Ghosted "Include Linked Files" box when saving artwork?

    Why will Illustrator CS5 not allow me to check the "Include Linked Files" box when saving my artwork as AI or EPS?

    When you placed the files into you AI file did you use the Place command from the File menu and have the Link box checked or did you use copy/paste? If you used the latter then the files are embedded. The Include Linked Files will also embed the files and make them non-linked. I don't know if that is what you are after. This is real non-intuitive.

  • Unreadable Files Error when Importing

    Hi - I get an "unreadable files" error when trying to import from my iPhoto Library folder. I've read the other postings, and it sounds as though I should not have moved files directly into this folder. If that's the case, can someone please tell me how to move iPhoto Library files from an external HD onto my computers HD so that I can access the files in iPhoto? What I did was move pictures from my external HD "Pictures,iPhoto Libray, Originals" into the the same folder on my computer's HD - Thanks for any help you can provide!

    misstexas:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    import from my iPhoto Library folder
    That's the reason. iPhoto will not import any file that resides anywhere inside the iPhoto Library folder. Move them to the Desktop and import from there.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Corrupt File Error when Downloading TV Episode

    I will always get to 330-40 MB of downloading the season finale to Deadwood Season 2, and I will get unable to download part of the file is corrupt. Is there any thing I can do to download the rest of the episode? Or is this a problem on Apples end?

    I'm having the same problem with the second episode of "The Venture Bros." season 3. It makes it to 80.1 MB, then tells me there was an error in downloading and that the file may be corrupted. The dialog box tells me to choose "check for purchases" from the "store" menu to re-download the file. When I do this, iTunes starts downloading the file again, from the 70 MB point, and when it gets back up to 80.1 the same error message pops up.
    I've tried deleting the file in the downloads window, but this doesn't seem to have any effect. It does not actually get rid of the content that has already been downloaded. I think that if I could find the file that contains the partial download in the Finder and delete that then iTunes would (maybe) restart the download from the beginning and (maybe) it would get all the way through. Does anyone know where those files are stored?
    Thanks,
    Blake.

  • Changing file type when saving doesn't work

    How can I fix the problem where, if I change file type when saving, eg from tiff to jpg, the 'jpg' suffix is not appended in the save window? It remains as tiff. This has only started happening recently.

    I have a G5 iSight running OSX 10.4.11 with all the latest upgrades. The problem is about a week old.
    Yesterday I did a clean install of everything (not because of this problem) which I'm sure would have cleared the problem. But I was playing around with importing all my old PS and InDesign settings via copying the old preference files (and others), and the tiff/jpeg problem has reappeared. Seems to me like one of the files I copied, contains the problem. I suspect the only way out of this is to reload PS. But I was hoping it might be as simple as deleting a certain preference file.

  • Indesign CS4 "forgets" file name when saving as Postcript file.

    Like the title says Indesign CS4 "forgets" file name when saving as Postcript file.
    Example:
    I open up indesign CS4 and open up a file called "test5". Then I go to the print menu and save it as a postscript file. Once the save as dialog box comes up it wont say "test5" but it uses whatever file name I used last time I created a PDF.
    I want indesign to recognize that when I create a postscript file that I want it to be named the same way as my file that is open at that moment. Changing the file name every time is not bad when they are called "test5" etc but here at this company we use super long file names and it's a pain to change it every time.
    Funny thing: Some machines here do it the way in the example but other machines will do it the correct way by using the same name in the save as box.
    Any suggestions on how to fix this? If something is not clear just ask!

    How about this - it's a workaround, I can't change ID or your system.
    I'm big on EXACT filenames also, case and space sensative. Do a "Save As" before printing - the file name should be correct and highlighted, ctrl+c copy, escape/cancel the Save As. Paste in the filename during the Save as Postscript File.

  • My old TIFFs and JPEGs have end of file errors when Photoshop crashes

    I'm using CS3 on a mac duo intel, 10.5.8 OS
    My photoshop is frequently crashing, and I am unable to force quit in the finder. Even worse, TIFs and JPGs that aren't even open at the time of the crash are getting corrupted. As for as I can tell, any TIF or JPG that was saved at any time during the session that ended with the crash gets corrupted. Even the versions in Time Machine get corrupted. For instance, Let's say I launched photoshop at 9 am on Monday morning. at 12 pm on Monday, I save and close files X, Y, and Z. At 6 pm on Monday, photoshop crashes. X, Y, and Z are now corrupted. If I check time machine, say for the versions on my drive at 12:30 pm, Monday, they will be corrupted, even though the files were closed half an hour earlier, and the crash didn't happen until 6 pm.
    Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. As you might imagine, I'm ready to pull my hair out.

    Nick

  • Error when saving a document

    I am trying to download and save a document from the apple support site (iPod classic (120GB) User Guide). Every time I click the save button I get the error message A file error has occurred. I tried reinstalling Adobe Reader9, with no luck.

    Right-clicking on the link and choose "Save target as" works fine, thanks. Just up until now I have had no problem clicking the save button when viewing a PDF file on-line. This saved the document to my desktop. Still would like to know how to get rid of this error though.
