File extension association

I know I can associate a certain type of file extension to a program by going to Finder, Get Info and apply to all. But I wanted to know what's behind that feature? Are there any way to do that in the Terminal?
The closest I got was SetFile from Developer Tools but how can I see what are the default applications for each file extension?

Try the following...
defaults read com.apple.LaunchServices

  • StarOffice 8 CDE Icon and Document File Extension Associations

I recently upgraded to Solaris 10 (5/08). With previous versions of Solaris, I installed StarOffice 7 from CD and it placed the nice little icon in the CDE desktop panel and it created StarOffice associations to all the typical office file extensions (ie. .doc, .xls, etc.). I would like to use the StarOffice 8 that is bundled with Solaris 10. Is there an installation step or some other way to automatically setup the CDE icon and the file extension associations?
    Thanks,

I came across the same problem on windows XP SP2 machines.
I created a registry key that forces the file associations as follows:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\shell]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\shell\open]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\shell\open\command ]

  • How do I reverse a file extension association?

A while back I changed the file association of all my .eps files because they were opening up in preview instead of Illustrator not thinking about all my Photoshop .eps files.
Now, all my PS eps files open in AI. Is there a way to reverse this besides changing each one individually? Maybe a preference I can trash?

    Eric
You're dead right, it will open all eps in Photoshop, and so move the problem around. Have a look at

  • Problem with AI File extension association

I have Adobe CS4 and for some reason, my computer doesn't recognize  Adobe Illustrator as the default program for .ai files. Instead, it  lists AIRegedit.exe.
When I open up the Properties, it displays in the type of file field  "example.ai" as an .ai file instead of the normal Adobe Illustrator  Document.
When I open up "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific  program" .ai files are listed as "AI File" instead of "Adobe Illustrator  Document."
Usually the icon for an Illustrator document is an orange square with  inner white lettering, but now it is a white block with a small orange  square inside.
I'm novice when it comes to Regedit, so I'm wondering if anyone has had  similar problems or suggestions on how I could fix this file extension  problem.
    Thanks!

something got messed up, usually re-starting is the miracle fix for a number of windows issues. If it does not get fix by itself try this:
right click on an AI file, in the context menu choose "Open With", then go down to "Chose Program...". Find AI CS4, select it by clicking once and make sure to check "Always use selected program...."

  • .prproj file extension missing in file association preferences Bridge

I recently updated Bridge and lost my ability to open Premiere Pro projects from Bridge.  The prproj file would open in Media Encoder instead. I could however open the prproj file in Windows Explorer. The following is the fix to add prproj to file association option to Bridge.
    The Steps
    Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CC (64 Bit)\Resources\Adobe Bridge Opener Preferences.xml
Right Click on the file named Adobe Bride Open Preferences.xml , select "edit" from the fly out menu. The file will open in "Notepad"
Expand the Notepad window, scroll to the bottom. Before the statement </openers> copy and paste the following statement.
    app_name="Premiere Pro">
        <item description="$$$/Bridge/OpenersXML/Description/PremiereProject=Premiere Pro" extensions="prproj" app_name="OS">
         4. Now save the file to the desktop as Adobe Bridge Opener Preferences.xml and close.
         5. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CC (64 Bit)\Resources
         6. Drag the file you saved to the the Bridge Resources folder.
         7. When prompted click "Move and Replace"
         8. Open Bridge and go to Edit> Preferences> File Type Associations
         9. Scroll to the bottom and you will see Premiere ( if you do not you may need to restore to default)
         10. Now you can add the correct File Association to the .prproj file.
I am not sure if this is an isolated problem, but I thought that this information could help someone out there.

thanks again... when you look at the directory tree in bridge i see...
all of the folder and files where of jpeg and i could open and edit
here but they would not be edited in iphoto... once i updated to
    ilife09 they became this...
also if I go in thru the harddrive to get a picturefrom the pictures
folder that you see at the top it sends me here... i now have to
access the photo library by the way of the finder to the pictures
folder... any thoughts as to how to clean this up and would deleting

  • UTI associated with wrong file extension

Okay, here is the deal. There are two file extensions, rar and cbr, that are associated with the Uniforma Type Identifier com.rarlab.rar-archive. I do not want the file extension cbr to be associated with com.rarlab.rar-archive. How do I break this association?

In Finder, do a Get Info on a .cbr File, look for Open With, chose what you do want to open itwith, check the Apply to all box.

  • Set file type associations in Adobe Bridge for Photoshop CS6

Is there a way I can edit the registry so that in Adobe Bridge, under edit, preferences, file type associations, the jpg extension is forced to use the 32-bit version of Photoshop?  I can do it manually, but is there a registry key i can export to apply it to multiple computers?

Yes, in theory, but it is generally not recommended. But that location would depend on what OS you are on. This video give the locations for the Photoshop files, Bridge would just be in a neighboring folder: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/how-to-reset-photoshop- cs6s-preferences-file/

  • Removing obsolete file type associations from "Open With" menu

Ever since I removed VMWare Fusion 3.x from my system, I've been unable to remove the Bootcamp file type associations that it created. For example, if I right-click on a PDF and choose Open With, this is a partial list of what I see:
    Adobe Acrobat Pro (default)
Adobe Distiller (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Fireworks CS4
Adobe Fireworks CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Illustrator CS4
Adobe Illustrator (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
...and on and on and on. 17 additional entries for Fusion for PDS's alone. This junk is driving me crazy.
I've tried rebuilding the Launch Services database with MacPilot and Onyx (the recommended fix that I've found on the web), but the entries still are there even after restarting Finder and rebooting my iMac. I'm at a loss to figure out how to get rid of these.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

They are stored in the LaunchServices database. You can give this a try, but no guarantees. If you no longer use VM Fusion then I suggest following the information below on uninstalling software.
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
    find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
    Press RETURN.
Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Setting Bridge's file type associations in Preferences

    Hello,
I am using Bridge with Windows 7 and I'm trying to change the file type association for a jpg from Photoshop to Office 2015. When I click on Browse, I find myself looking in Program Files/ Program Files (x86) but nothing seems to be a form of Office 2015 that will work. I see a folder for Office 2015 and inside is an .exe file, but that doesn't do it.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

You are looking for an application, and ALL applications in a Windows environment have an .exe extension.  There's no other kind.

Because to me it sounds nuts.  All MS Office applications are pretty bad at handling images and voracious resource hogs.

  • Dreamweaver CC and Windows 8.1 - Can't Find A Valid Editor For This File Extension

Was running the latest version with no issues and then I loaded Office 2013 .. Now when I am in the remote site and try to double click on a .cfm file, I get a dialog box..Can't Find A Valid Editor For This File Extension..
I tried the support chat and they said Dreamweaver support was not available, try again later???
So I thought I would reinstall the CC version and now I can see the Dreamweaver icon next to the files but still ... can't open the file..
    Any assistance would be appreciated?
    Leo

The issue is only in Windows 8.x where when Dreamweaver CC is installed, it is not able to turn on the file type associations by default.  The workaround for now is to manually add the extensions both within Windows and then within Dreamweaver CC itself.
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs and select Dreamweaver CC and then select 'Choose defaults for this program' and Select All or the extensions you want to open in Dreamweaver CC
Start Dreamweaver CC and go to Edit > Preferences > File Types/Editors and add '.cfm .cfc' to the extensions and then add C:\Program Files (x86)\Dreamweaver CC\Dreamweaver.exe then click on Apply and Close
    That should be it.

How ever, if I browse to that specific directry using Toshiba File Manager, I get a message saying "There is no associated application for this file type."

  • File type associations limit in WP8.1

    Hi everyone!
I'm building a music app for WP8.1 called Teh Jukebox. I am aiming to support many music file formats.
I am however running into a huge problem due to the file type limit at certification time, only allowing 20 file types to be registered with an app.
The reason it is a problem is because I want to make a music app that plays many music file formats, from lossy types like mp3 to lossless types like flac, along with chiptune formats such as nes, spc and vgz. Secondly I want the app to be able to
display album art, and the album art may be in jpg format or png or gif.
After I added support for chiptune formats I went over the limit and the certification tool told me that the app failed certification as it went over the limit.
Here is a breakdown of the current file type support:
     lossy:
     mp3
     ogg
     m4a
     aac
     wma
     lossless:
     wav
     flac
     album art:
     png
     gif
     jpg
     jpeg
     Playlist:
     m3u
     m3u8
     chiptune:
     kss
     spc
     vgm
     vgz
     gbs
     nsf
     nsfe
     sap
     ay
     hes
As you can see I'm over the limit at 23.
If I don't put each file type inside my Package.appxmanifest file as a File Type Association declaration when I call StorageFolder.GetFilesAsync() I don't get the files in the list, even though they are in that folder.
The code is all done and the formats all work but because of this limit my app can't currently be certified!
So my question is can the limit be extended for certain apps (up to 30 would be fine!) or is there some way to add more file types that I don't know?
    Thanks all for your help
    -Alister.

    Hello Alister,
I am not aware of any way to extend the 20 file extension limit. However, the other thing to keep in mind is
certain file extensions are reserved by the OS and any declarations you place in the manifest will be ignored. MP3, MP4, WAV, WMV are all reserved by the OS, for
example. The above link contains the full list.
There are two types of reserved file types: file types reserved for Windows Phone built-in apps and file types reserved for the operating system. When a file type reserved for a built-in app is launched, only the built-in app will launch. Any attempt
to register your app with that file type is ignored. Similarly, any attempt to register your app with a file type reserved for the operating system also will be ignored.

  • KB2878233 corrupts PowerPoint file type associations (bis).

    Dear,
I posted the question below a week ago in the Office forums on answers.microsoft.com, but did not receive any reaction. Allow me to repeat:
Installing the KB2878233 security update corrupts the file type associations for PowerPoint files in the following environment: Windows XP SP3 ("fully" updated) / PowerPoint
    Viewer v. 14.0.7015.1000.
PPT files get associated with MOC.EXE for opening them.  Uninstalling the update does not restore the original associations.  The problem can be alleviated by repairing the PPT Viewer installation manually.
Question: can this High Priority security update please be re-released through Windows Update without the corruption effects?
    TIA.

    Hi,
We can try to change the file associate in Registry key:
For all users on this computer, please change associate program of the .doc or file type you would like to under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes.
For current user account, please change associate program of the .doc or file type you would like to under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes. If there is no such extension, please create new keys for it.

  • How to repair File Type Associations

Hi, I have a problem with being unable to mount *.bin files by double clicking them.
They seem to be associated with VLC at the moment, and I would like to know how to return it so that these *.bin files are automatically mounted/opened when downloaded.
Which application should I choose to associate *.bin files with so I can do this?
Is there a different way of taking care of this problem?
Additionally, I have removed VLC from my computer for this reason, and is there any other thing I should have done besides deleting the VLC folder I had made to contain that application? (e.g. an uninstall)
I'm a new Mac user so I need a little help

    Hi, lunarist.
I tested your link using two browsers: OmniWeb and Safari.
    1. With OmniWeb, it downloaded the .bin, invoked my copy of StuffIt Deluxe, scanned it with Norton AntiVirus, decompressed the .bin and mounted the disk image included therein. My StuffIt preferences are set to scan files with NAV before decompressing them. OmniWeb "knows" to use StuffIt Deluxe to expand the .bin because of the file's MIME type and, as a result of having StuffIt Deluxe installed on my Mac, Launch Services has associated StuffIt Deluxe with files of this type.
Launch Services is the underlying mechanism in Mac OS X that associates documents with applications and vice-versa.
    2. With Safari, the bin was downloaded and decompressed. I was warned the disk image contained a program, and when I accepted that it should be mounted, it was.
What you're seeing here is that Safari contains the code necessary to decompress the .bin and will do so if "Open Safe Files" is specified in Safari > Preferences > General. That Safari can perform this is common with many Mac-based Internet applications, e.g. browsers, FTP clients, even some mail clients. See section [2.4] of the comp.sys.mac.com FAQ where it states:"almost all modern Macintosh telecommunications and Internet programs have the capability of converting and unconverting MacBinary files for you."However, as previously noted in other posts, you don't have an application installed that will permit you to decompress these files by simply double-clicking them. For that, you need something like StuffIt Expander, a free version of which can be found here. Tiger, unlike prior versions of Mac OS X, does not include Stuffit Expander: see "Mac OS X 10.4: Where is StuffIt Expander?"
So, as others have advised, install the free version of StuffIt Expander in order to decompress .bin files by double-clicking them.
They're presently associated with VLC as VLC must claim .bin as a file extension or the MIME type "application/x-macbinary" as one it can open, hence Launch Services has decided that, based on the apps you have installed, that VLC is the only app that claims this file type.
    Good luck!

This, and countless similar issues all revolving around file types and
windows... Your best bet is to grab something like process monitor from
sysinternals and check where exactly in the registry windows is looking
for the association. Or, of course, the pragmatic approach to just
create a new profile for this user.
