File permissions in Sites folder

When I use my ISP account to host a site and install something like Joomla (a CMS) by uploading it using Transmit or GoLive permissions for directories uploaded default to 755, and are writable by Joomla (for example)
If I upload files to Sites(on another Mac in my network) using GoLive or transmit - the permissions are 750. If I upload the zip file and extract it within terminal, directories are then 755.
Also, directories are not writable even though they're 755 (inlike on my ISP), I need to manually set them to 777. config files for php applications can't be created by the particular application (they can on my ISP), and aren't automatically writeable, I have to create them and set them to 777 to be writeable.
Since I'm completely new to this and not particularly technical, I have no idea why this is happening. Is it specific to the sites folder? Would it be the same if I used the library web documents folder? Is there a way to have this function the same way as it does with my ISP. I have webmin installed, but I get a headache just looking at it.
Thanks!

As the sites folder resides in a home directory then they follow the permissions set by the owner of that directory.
I dont use the Sites folder to serve webpages on my mac mini I have edited the apache config file to specify a directory in /Library/WebServer however I have just checked the sites folder in my home account and the permissions are 755.
When I copy files across my network over AFP to my sites folder on my server they use the same permissions that they were on set to on the mac I sent them from. For example
If I create a folder on my desktop by default it has 755 permissions. If I then zip the folder the resulting zip file by default has 644 permissions. When I copy the zip file to my sites folder it retains the 644 permission, then when I unzip it also retain the the 755 permissions of the original folder.
When I use FTP it follows the similar rules by default transmit uploads files with default permissions of 640 however when I unzip files the unzipped file retains the permissions that were set on it on the computer that sent it.
You can however in the transmit preferences setup what default permissions you want to use on any file that you transfer. You can specify different permissions on different file types. However this will not affect the contents of zipped files they retain the permissions set prior to them being zipped. Y

  • File permissions in public folder

sharing out the public folder on an imac i am using for a networked file share. I set the folder so that everyone has access to read and write. When some one creates a file the permissons to the file do not allow others to read or write. Any suggestions?

Files added to a "write only" folder are treated specially by AFP - permissions are set to give user, group and other full "read & write" privileges. Changing the permissions of the "Drop Box" so that it is no longer "write only" would prevent the permissions changes from happening.
A sharepoint can be configured so that permissions are inherited for a folder regardless of whether or not it is "write only". I've never used Sharepoints, but if there is an option to set both "ownership" and "permissions" to be inherited from the parent folder, try setting both - AFP is a bit quirky and it doesn't seem to work well unless both are set.
AFP can also be glitchy - it was in "Panther" and I get the feeling it is worse in "Tiger" (there might have been a bug fix in an earlier 10.4.x, but some problems persist), especially with respect to the "inherit" options. When the "inherit" settings are enabled but the change doesn't propagate through subfolders, sometimes restarting the AFP server ("Personal FIle Sharing") makes the problem go away. Other times, the whole computer may need to be restarted.
I think the state of AFP in OS X is a little sad, considering what you could do prior to OS X where you could go in to "Get Info", share any folder and specify who could access the share, through a control panel. Now the official solution for adding your own share point is to purchase OS X Server.

  • Download of an Existing Site Results in Locked Files in Local Site Folder

Newbie question running DW on a Mac  --
Running Dreamweaver CS6 on new MacBook Pro OS 10.7.4.
Need to revise a site I had been maintaining with Contribute 4 -- have to use DW CS6.
Succeeded in downloading the whole remote site with minimum issues, but when I start to edit from the Local Site, I find all of the files locked.
Can I just change the permissions with Get Info, or is this a Dreamweaver lock requiring special actions?
    thanks

  • How to properly get folders, files into Dreamweaver Defined Site Folder from desktop

I, obviously am a new Dreamweaver user, and I need to know
the proper way of going about getting a folder, files, ect. from my
hard drive into my Dreamweaver defined site folder. I understand
how to insert an image from my hard drive into DW and it shows up
in my site folder in the Files Panel. More specifically, using
Lightbox2, after downloading Lightbox and placing those elements in
a new folder on my hard drive, what is the proper way to get that
    folder into my site folder?
Also, how can I properly add images to an images folder in my
site folder in DW for possible later use, without inserting them on
the page. I know by inserting them on the page from a folder on my
hard drive, Dreamweaver prompts me for DW to recognize them. I
would like to know how I can get them in there and DW to recognize
them without actually inserting them on my page.
And can and how can I move files, images, pages from one site
to another? or should I? Thanks, if anyone can help me with these
    file moving questions.

To restate courtney's explanation, *anything* that you paste
    into the site's
local root folder will appear in DW's File panel, and will be
    considered by
DW to be a part of the site.

  • Folder/file permissions stop bluetooth transfer from my iMac to to MacBook Air ---  Both on Yosemite 10.10.1

e.g.  on iMac have 50 photo files in a folder ... folder can not be transferred to my MacBook Air via bluetooth - receive error message "Items can’t be copied to “Desktop” because you don’t have permission to read them."      I change the folder permissions on iMac (get info>>assign others to r/w permission), and also change the folder to a shared folder.   I still get the same message on MacBook Air.
I have not tried manually changing 50 individual file permissions in the folder ...eeegads!
Single files transfer properly between both computers ....after permissions are manually changed.   What's going on?   I never had to even say the word "permissions" pre-Yosemite.   Any advice would be greatly appreciated

There are apps such as Simple Transfer which allow you to transfer photos to/from your iPad and your computer via your wifi network - they will copy into the Camera Roll album in the Photos app on your iPad

  • Need to update file permissions on multiple items

I have 15 jpeg images in a folder on my desktop.  For everyone I want to update file permissions to Read & Write for all items.
I updated file permissions for the folder.
I can update permissions for each image, but how do I do that for all 15 images simultaneously?
    Thanks.

From the folder's settings, click the button with the gear icon and choose to apply the settings to the enclosed items.

  • NMH405 - File permissions

    Hi,
My NMH seems to have set file permissions on a folder which means i cant access the photo's (of my wedding of course!). I can move the photo's using the web interface, but i can't move them in windows or ubuntu. Windows says the speical permissions were set by Unix Root .
Now i am thinking there maybe a way to set these back using the alternative NMH405 interface (the non flash one) but i can't for the life of me find out how to access it. PLEASE help!

if i may ask, where are these locked files from (source)?
are all of your files on the Media Hub locked?
i found an article: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo, i dont know if this might help.

  • Personal Web Sharing - Just the "Sites" folder?

So I have just turned personal web sharing on. I am going to use this feature to send zip files. (or let people have access to zip files in my Sites folder)
But my question is, what else can someone see from the IP address I give out? Pictures folder? Applications? Music? or is personal web sharing limited to only the "Sites" folder?
I am totally new to this so I know it's a basic question, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere else. Thank you.

By default, Apache will make available the Sites folder in account home folders, and the folder /Library/WebServer/Documents/ when no username is specified in the URL.

Try this it worked for me Pat Willener gave it to me off the site :
I have not read all you wrote, so I may have missed some points. As I understand it, you installed FP 10 on IE7, but it won't play any Flash content?
    Try this
download the FP uninstaller from http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157
close all browser windows, then run the uninstaller
download the offline ActivX installer for Internet Explorer from http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe
close all browser windows, then run the installer

  • How can I move the permissions.sqlite file to a new folder or a subfolder?

I am using a syncing program to keep cookie exceptions on multiple computers all equivalent. Unfortunately this is causing a problem because places.sqlite changes frequently and cannot be synced while FF is running. So I want to move the permissions.sqlite file to a new folder or a subfolder so I can only sync that one folder. Is there a way to specify the location of this file?

Sorry, there is no way to move that file out of the Profile folder, or specify a different location for it, built into Firefox.
One extension that might be able to help you do that is Pike's Bookmark Backup extension. BB allows you to specify which files are backed-up and where those backup files are saved. It also has a backup interval setting, IIRC. <br />

  • I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Help please

I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Does anyone have the same problem or know how to fix it?

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate

  • All files in a shared folder don't have permissions

I have two users on my mac and am having some issues with sharing files.  I created a shared folder and gave the other user read/write permissions.  When I log in as that user, the folder can be accessed, but some of the files in that folder cannot be accessed.  These are all photos, and for the most part I'm dropping them into the shared folder from iPhoto.
I tried it again by using the Public folder with the same result.  However, there isn't consistency with the actual files that don't have permission.  In other words, the shared folder I created may have a file that does not have permission, but that same file does have permission when I dropped it in the Public folder.  So it is totally random as to which files in the shared folder don't have permission to be accessed.
I also tried to simply drag the files to the other user.  Same result.
Can anybody help me with this?  I'm stumped as I thought once a folder was shared that all contents are accesible.

Sharing a folder does give others access to it, but it does not change the permissions of the files inside.  Other users can probably read everything, but they can't modify files that they do not own unless the owner of those files has changed the permissions to allow it, or other steps have been taken to provide additional access such as the use of an Access Control List (ACL).
Apple doesn't include a GUI utility for manipulating ACLs, so your choices are to use a third-party utility such as TinkerTool System (not free) or the Terminal application.  The Drop Box folder in your user's Public folder has an ACL entry that gives access to change just about everything on files that are dropped there, so a Terminal example that sets similar permissions for everyone (a particular user group can also be used) would be:
    1.  copy and paste the folowing into the Terminal window (there is a trailing space):
    chmod -R +a "everyone allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,chown,file_inherit,directory_inherit"
    2.  drag the desired folder into the Terminal window (this copies the path)
    3.  press return
Note that ACL entries only work on items that have been created in the folder - not moved there - so you should use option drag to make a new copy in the shared folder.

  • Permissions in a folder are not applied to new files added by users over shared network

New files added to a shared folder do not inherit the permissions of the folder but rather retain the permissions of the user. Because the purpose of the folder on the network is to allow multiple users access to all the files (read and write), these new files cannot be accessed and editd by others. Is there a way to have the new files automatically inherit the folder permissons? I am aware of the "Apply to enclosed items " drop-down in the Get Info window but this is not practical given the number of new files that are produced and filed.
    THanks,
    JD

If it's the folder is on the boot drive then the only way to accomplish this is with a combination of groups and ACL's as far as I know. There may be other ways but this is the one I know.
You say the folder is on the network but is on the boot disk, how are you setting this up and are the users accessing this all from Mac's? And they all have accounts on this Mac?
In a nutshell you would setup a group that all the users needing to access the folder belong to and then setup the ACL on the fodder so that all member's of that group will have full permission to whatever is in the folder.
So first in Users&Groups create a group for this and add all the users who need access.
The do to the folder and change its group to the group you created and change its mode to 775 (or 770 if you don't want anyone else having even read access on the folder)
    Then enter this
    sudo chmod -R +a "GroupNameCreated  allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit"  folderToChange
Now the weird thing is if you look at files in the folder they will appear to have the normal Unix mode of 644 but anyone in the group will have read, write and delete permission on the items in the folder.
I suggest you play with this on a test folder and seeing if it meets your needs before changing the working folder.
Also this will not change anything already in the folder it only applies to newly created files/folders
    regards

  • Windows 7 ignores file permissions for shared 10.5.8 folder

I set up a shared folder on my Mac using SMB. I also set up an account with limited privileges (read only) for accessing it. The problem is that, while the Windows 7 computer needs the account password to access the folder, once it's accessed the file permissions are completely ignored, permitting to user to change and delete files at will.
Any ideas on how to keep the folder Read-Only?

When you enter the account's password, you are logging in to the Mac as that user, which is why everything is coming up as read + write.
This article indicates that you have to provide the account name and password for SMB sharing:
